At 6.1mm thick, this phone is nearly half as slim as my first iPhone and somehow feels more like a fashion accessory than a piece of electronics. The S25 Edge, and the feverish rumors about the iPhone Air rumored to clock in near 5.4mm, are doing more than chasing trends – they’re chasing a kind of technological transcendence. Thinness has become the ultimate flex, a design shorthand for “we can do what others can’t.” When tech gets thinner, it does more than look good – it changes how we interact with it, how we feel about it, and how we show it off.
The obsession with thinness isn’t new, but it’s hit a new peak in the smartphone era. Every year, manufacturers shave off tenths of a millimeter and treat it like a moon landing. Consumers lap it up, reviewers go wild, and industrial designers are lauded for making the impossible seem routine. But what is it about thin tech that makes us collectively lean in? Are we just suckers for sleekness, or is there something deeper going on – a psychology, a history, a design philosophy at play?
Thin devices are the physical embodiment of design bravado. When a phone like the S25 Edge arrives at 6.1mm, it’s not just an incremental upgrade, it’s a statement of intent. The engineering behind such a device is immense, requiring every component to be miniaturized, every cable rerouted, every opportunity for excess ruthlessly eliminated. The result is elegance distilled into aluminum and glass, a slab that feels more futuristic than most science fiction. There’s a reason why the world’s most iconic tech moments – from the original MacBook Air envelope reveal to the iPod Nano launch – are all about thinness.

Today’s S25 Edge, at 6.1mm, and the iPhone Air, rumored at 5.4mm, are nearly half as thick as their ancestors. Each generation, we ask manufacturers to do the impossible all over again. Every new thin phone is a loud answer to that challenge.
Thin tech stirs something deep in our collective psyche. There’s an almost primal satisfaction to holding a device that feels impossibly light and slender – a sensation that technology is melting away, leaving only the pure experience behind. In design, thinness signals refinement, mastery, and a certain confidence. People read thinness as a sign that a product is sophisticated, modern, and quietly powerful. It’s why, when a device gets thinner, it just ‘feels’ smarter.
Sociologists and psychologists have studied this phenomenon for years. We are drawn to objects that seem effortless, that suggest intelligence and intention in their creation. Thin phones fit this bill perfectly. They whisper of minimalism, of cutting through clutter, of leaving behind the excesses of the past. The thinner the device, the less it distracts, and the more it feels like an extension of ourselves rather than a separate object. It’s why the ‘Steve Jobs pulling a MacBook Air out of a Manila Envelope’ moment felt so impactful. A device this powerful, inside an envelope that holds mere sheets of paper.
There’s also a status aspect. The thinnest device is the newest, the most advanced, the one that elicits envy at the coffee shop. Companies understand this well. Marketing for the S25 Edge and the upcoming iPhone Air leans heavily on words like “sleek,” “refined,” and “elegant.”
Making a device thin is a Herculean feat that turns engineers into magicians. Building the Galaxy S25 Edge required the invention of a new stacked battery design, allowing 4200mAh of power to fit into a wafer-thin chassis. Apple’s iPhone Air, if it hits the rumored 5.4mm, will likely rely on graphene composites, vapor chamber cooling, and ceramic shielding. These details aren’t marketing fluff, they’re the hard-won fruits of years of R&D, late nights, and more than a few engineering headaches.
Every millimeter lost is a puzzle piece moved. Sacrifices must be made. Batteries shrink, so clever software is needed to stretch out runtime. Heat dissipation becomes a high-wire act, with vapor chambers and graphite layers crammed into ever-tighter spaces. Even the camera bump, that perennial foe of slimness, becomes a battleground for new lens arrangements and sensor stacking techniques. The S25 Edge, for example, manages a triple-lens array that barely protrudes, a feat that would have seemed like science fiction just three years ago.
Yet, there’s a cost. Durability tests show that ultra-thin phones are more susceptible to bending, twisting, and shattering. The rumored iPhone Air has reportedly failed internal drop tests at higher rates than its chunkier siblings. Still, consumers (and designers) seem willing to accept these trade-offs. In the end, the thrill of holding a technological marvel that feels impossibly thin outweighs the risks for many.
The march toward thinner devices shows no sign of slowing. As long as there are new materials to test, new battery chemistries to try, and new display technologies to push, designers will keep squeezing out every last millimeter. The S25 Edge and iPhone Air are not endpoints, but milestones in a relentless quest for elegance. Future phones may incorporate flexible batteries, rollable screens, or even modular components that let users choose their own compromise between thinness and function.
But there’s more at play than a simple race for the slimmest profile. Designers are beginning to rethink what thinness actually means for the user. Does a device that’s nearly invisible in the pocket actually improve daily life, or does it introduce new anxieties about durability, grip, and longevity? The next wave of innovation may be less about reduction for its own sake and more about balancing thinness with other forms of progress: sustainability, repairability, and long-term comfort.
Still, the romance with thin tech will never fully fade. Humans are wired to appreciate objects that feel refined, thoughtful, and advanced. Thinness is a language that designers speak fluently, and it resonates with anyone who’s ever marveled at the way a feather floats, a blade slices, or a phone disappears into the fabric of daily life. For now, that obsession keeps the world’s best designers reaching for the next fraction of a millimeter, and keeps the rest of us reaching for the latest impossibly slim device.

Nestled in the heart of Billund, Denmark, an exciting design story unfolds. CEBRA, a renowned architecture firm, is designing the LEGO Innovation Campus for LEGO – a workplace brimming with creativity, sustainability, and playfulness. With 50,000 sqm designated as a creative hub for over 1,700 staff, including more than 600 designers, this campus ensures the vibrant pulse of LEGO product innovation directly connects to its product-making reality, with easy access to the adjacent LEGO factories.
Anchor elements of LEGO’s world-renowned building bricks permeate the Innovation Campus’s design through its modularity. The campus comprises six interlocking modules, each soaring to four stories high. Seamlessly woven within these innovative modules is the heart of the campus, a central artery coined the ‘PlayWay.’ Linking different regions within the campus, the PlayWay triggers a harmonious, flexible environment facilitating flowing communication, chance encounters, and sharing of ideas. It’s a seamless blend of architectural brilliance and LEGO’s modular principle.

Temp Project designs a new showroom for eroticwear brand Anoeses, its quiet presence discovered along one of Kyiv’s busiest fashion corridors. Rather than shouting for attention, the project draws the gaze inward, beneath the street level, into a semi-subterranean space that feels distinctly separate from the city above. Inside, the air cools, sounds soften, and the mood shifts. It is in this subtle transition that Temp Project’s design for the Anoeses showroom begins to unfold.
The building itself, dating back to 1911 and designed by architect Altarzhevsky, holds a calm gravity. Choosing to place a flagship showroom in its semi-basement gives the Anoeses brand a setting that already speaks in undertones. From here, Temp Project crafted a spatial language that balances restraint with provocation, using raw materiality and shaped light to reflect the nature of the brand without ever overstating it.

Anastasiia Tempynska, founder of Temp Project, designs the Anoeses showroom to feel like a gentle enclosure, an emotionally safe place where visitors in Kyiv can explore. The designers approach the interior as an atmosphere before anything else, working with concrete, metal, and soft lighting to develop a sense of privacy and slow movement. Mirrors catch the eye and redirect it. Walls curve, lighting narrows, and the space unfolds in a sequence of impressions.
From the entrance, the layout moves across three zones. Each area is tied to a particular aspect of the Anoeses collection — fabric and corsets first, followed by latex and leather, and then a sculptural fitting room. The progression ends in a winter garden, a greenhouse room that feels strangely detached from the outside world. Here, a leather swing hangs in the light, surrounded by plants that grow upward through the stillness. It feels like an afterimage from a dream.

Throughout the Anoeses showroom in Kyiv, mirrored surfaces shift the spatial experience. A ceiling mirror above the reception desk doubles the height of the room while subtly bouncing light across the polished concrete floor. Another, spherical and inset into the wall, distorts the room in a way that recalls security mirrors and voyeuristic film stills. The interior design is playful, but it also brings in the idea of being watched, of watching yourself — of control, performance, and power.
Furniture pieces are treated as sculptural objects. The central table in the leather and latex room was built from charred wood and enclosed in glass, more like an artifact than a counter. Inside it lies a copy of Sex by Madonna, photographed by Steven Meisel. The book is displayed page by page, each turned monthly. Its presence anchors the room, serving as both relic and reference point.
‘While working on the showroom, I was traveling in Switzerland,’ Tempynska recalls. ‘I think that’s why there’s a quiet brutality to the space. I was very moved by Peter Zumthor’s work — his ability to use texture, shadow, and silence. That influence found its way into how I approached this project.’ Though the Anoeses brand is provocative, its new showroom leans into understatement. The architecture carries its intensity through restraint.

Materials throughout the showroom are deliberately elemental. There’s a dryness to the concrete, a cold sheen to the metal fixtures, and a calculated sharpness in the contrast between soft forms and spiked accents. Clothing racks blend into architectural gestures. The fitting rooms draw on the corset as a formal reference, their curved walls embracing the body in a spatial parallel to the garments they’re made to hold.
Lighting is used not to highlight, but to conceal. A series of dim scenarios let the materiality lead: recessed fixtures along the ceiling, backlit arches, narrow spotlights over the shelves. The cumulative effect is immersive. Without overstating its function, the space creates a mood that aligns more with a meditative gallery than a traditional retail setting. In place of overt display, there is suggestion.

This Silver Lake architectural masterpiece demonstrates how thoughtful material selection and spatial design create lasting value in luxury real estate. Listed at $9.8 million, the property showcases Miller Fong’s dual expertise in furniture design and architecture, recently enhanced through a collaboration with Johnston Marklee, Project Room, and Terremoto.
The primary residence presents a striking composition of white stucco walls crowned with terracotta roofing. This material palette connects the home to California’s Mediterranean architectural heritage while providing a neutral canvas that allows the dramatic landscape to take center stage.

You know that feeling when a sushi boat arrives at your table, loaded with technicolor rolls like a floating parade of umami dreams? Now imagine that, but made entirely out of LEGO bricks. It shouldn’t work—but it absolutely does.
Spotted on LEGO Ideas, this brilliantly bizarre build is a brick-for-brick homage to the traditional Japanese “funamori” platter—those iconic wooden boats used to deliver sushi in theatrical fashion. The model, designed with a chef’s eye for detail and a builder’s obsession for geometry, swaps raw fish for ABS plastic, and the result is weirdly mouthwatering.

At a glance, the layout hits all the notes: twelve assorted maki rolls, tamago sushi with a sleek black nori wrap, twin nigiri pieces, two generous scoops of ikura (salmon roe), and even a blocky ebi (shrimp) with exaggerated stripes that somehow look juicy. The color-blocking is dialed in perfectly—lime green bricks for wasabi-tinted rolls, layered orange for the salmon slabs, and even stylized printed tiles to emulate cross-sections of fish and avocado. You can almost hear the clack of chopsticks.
The set also includes a full buildable place setting: a dipping dish of soy sauce, modular chopsticks, and a trio of side garnishes—ginger, wasabi, and some sprigs of LEGO foliage standing in for shredded daikon or decorative leaves. There’s even a tiny sushi chef minifigure wielding a cleaver, with rolled sleeves and that classic black-and-white tenugui headband. He looks ready to defend his omakase at all costs.
The boat itself is a sleek, tan construction with a minimalist Japanese flag at the stern, and a mast at the center that’s more symbolic than functional—just like the ones you’d find on real sushi boats in upscale Tokyo eateries. Built on a blue LEGO base plate shaped like rippling water, it’s practically an art piece on its own.
According to the LEGO Ideas submission, the entire build clocks in at around 800–900 pieces. It’s modular, so every sushi piece is removable, meaning this doubles as both a display set and a tactile, rearrangeable play experience.

Somewhere between an electric motorcycle and a moon rover, this concept breaks just about every rule in the design book, and that’s exactly the point. It doesn’t try to look fast. It doesn’t beg for lean angles or chase aerodynamics. Instead, it leans into the idea that two-wheelers deserve the same kind of protection and gravitas that trucks and SUVs have monopolized for decades. If the Cybertruck was a rolling vault for the open road, this is its two-wheeled offspring made for the chaos of urban streets.
Wrapped in a crisp, geometric shell, the bike strips away every trace of traditional motorcycle styling. No exposed frames, no visible suspension, no aggressive tank lines. Just flat, seamless panels that converge into a cockpit with the same clinical precision you’d expect from a concept dreamed up in CAD and rendered into existence by someone who’s never accepted “that’s how it’s always been” as an answer. The result is striking, more digital artifact than analog machine.

The proportions are intentional. Wide, slab-like sides anchor the body visually, while the large, almost cartoonishly smooth tires peek out from tucked-in fenders. It rides the line between vehicle and sculpture, but it’s grounded by a clear functional narrative. This thing is built to be a shell, a barrier between rider and environment, between fragility and structure. Unlike traditional motorcycles, which revel in exposure and minimalism, this design suggests the opposite. Put the rider inside the vehicle, not on it.
That decision changes everything. Protection from weather. Less wind fatigue. Safer city navigation. Even psychological comfort. There’s something reassuring about not staring down rush-hour traffic with just a helmet and a prayer. It’s not hard to imagine this thing powered by an electric hub motor, with a 10 to 15kWh battery pack hidden low in the chassis. Range? Maybe 100 to 120 kilometers if optimized. Speed? Likely capped around 100 kilometers per hour for urban use. But specs are moot here, given the conceptual nature. The visual language is what speaks loudest.
Where most motorcycles shout “look at me,” this one simply stands still and lets your brain catch up. It doesn’t want to blend in, and it sure as hell doesn’t want to be retro. It’s a rethink. A provocation. Maybe even a warning. The age of the naked bike might be ending. The shell is the future.

J Balvin celebrated his 40th birthday in style with A-list celebrities, and a surprise red electric motorbike that is designed by Vita Veloce Team (VVT), which is the singing sensation’s maiden venture with designer Mattias Gollin. Although the star singer was fully abreast of the close development of the anime-themed bike developed in collaboration with DAB Motors, little did he know the bike would debut at his star-studded bash!
According to Gollin and Simon Dabadie, founder of DAB, who played a key role in the development of this two-wheeler, the Colombian singing sensation had “no idea when it would be ready. We kept the manufacturing of the motorcycle completely secret. Rolling it out at Castello di Velona, surrounded by friends—that moment felt special.”

It was a surprise for him as he never anticipated the arrival of this cool electric bike (developed under his close watch) at his birthday event. The VVT team members later confirmed that the motorcycle is heavily inspired by Shotaro Kaneda’s red bike in Akira, a hit Japanese anime series. The one-off prototype was conceived, designed, and constructed in mere three weeks using AI-powered design tools. Developed on the DAB Motors’ trusted 1α platform, the bike is a part sculpture, part anime, and completely rideable. Gollin wanted the electric bike to feel like riding through a dream, hence the sound-absorbing foam in the wheel covers and rims that creates a hypnotic low-frequency sound when cruising down the alley. This futurism is matched by the purplish blue LED light strips in the wheels that create a sense of motion.
The two-seater motorbike can reach a top speed of 130 km/h and which is the reason it retains the sturdy windshield. Having a monolithic enclosed design aesthetic, the frame of the bike wraps the chunky wheels. The bodywork is 3D-printed and then sanded to perfection to achieve the futuristic appeal. After the extensive matte red paint job, the surface is patinaed to achieve a rusty look, as if the bike has aged on purpose, even though it is brand new. The stickers and decals all over the bodywork lend it a domineer akin to the ones that lay a heavy price on their presence. The total charge time of three hours and 30 minutes gets the bike ready for late-night skirmishes outside the city limits.
Interestingly, DAB Motors and VVT confirm the existence of the futuristic bike beyond the prototype. A limited production run is in the works, and that should excite motorheads and collectors alike. The price should be steep given DAB Motors’ pedigree for premium builds and the Balvin association. We presume, even before than happens, the prototype is destined for a sci-fi movie or series appearance, it is that cool. For us, the DAB Motors and VVT creation is a perfect crossover of art, engineering and design.

Tucked within the weathered coastline of rural Maine, OPAL Architecture’s Little House on the Ferry sidesteps the typical image of a single homestead set against a picturesque view. The project takes shape with three modest, prefabricated structures, nearly matching, positioned just so among the remnants of a former granite quarry. At first glance, the cabins appear to rest gently on the site, yet their placement reveals a more deliberate reading of place. Each sits in conversation with the stone around it, recognizing both the industrial past and the ongoing resilience of the recovering ground.
The guest house serves a family that travels from Austria to Maine each summer, joining an older main residence nearby. The new timber structures offer privacy for visiting friends and relatives, but they also deepen the experience of being in this particular landscape. Instead of dominating the site, the buildings register its scars and its softness. The design finds meaning in dispersion — each volume a fragment in dialogue with granite blocks and exposed bedrock.

OPAL Architecture’s cabins in Maine remain minimal in plan and expression, a gesture made possible by the use of prefabricated cross-laminated timber. Fabricated in Quebec from black spruce and ferried over to the island, these panels act as the full structural system, forming floor, walls, and roof. They arrive precut, slotting into place with precision. This construction method allowed the architects to ensure minimal disturbance to the fragile site, while producing a building envelope that is both strong and tactile. The grain of the spruce reads through the interiors, where the tone is kept pale and clear, letting the landscape carry the color.
Connection between the three buildings is managed by a series of decks that trace over the ground with lightness. These floating platforms act as thresholds, paths, and outlooks. They refuse any single axis or entry point. Instead, they reinforce the site’s inherent irregularity, allowing the architecture to feel both settled and momentary. Nothing is over-defined. The buildings are aligned more with the grain of the land than with each other.

OPAL Architecture designed the cabins to be used primarily in the warmer months of Maine, with large, operable windows ensuring natural ventilation. In the shoulder seasons, sliding wooden shutters temper the low sun and help insulate. When the owners leave for Austria in late fall, the shutters close the buildings up entirely. These movable elements add a quiet rhythm to the facades and offer subtle reminders of the life inside: one moment open to sea air and chatter, the next buttoned up and silent until next year.
Interior furnishings, drawn largely from the Thos. Moser collection, reflect a similar attitude toward restraint and care. Each piece is positioned as though placed thoughtfully and without hurry. The dining chairs, bedroom tables, and living room accents feel well suited to the project’s scale. Like the architecture itself, they support the experience of the site without distracting from it.
