World’s Tallest Mass Timber Skyscraper Brings Sustainable Urban Living To Milwaukee

Rising above the Milwaukee skyline, the Neutral 1005 N Edison St skyscraper signals a new chapter in mass timber construction. The building reaches 31 stories and is set to become the world’s tallest mass timber structure. Its form is clean and vertical, bringing a sense of calm presence to the riverfront site. The façade combines natural materials and large expanses of glass, letting light filter into living spaces and common areas. The subtle interplay of wood and transparency gives the tower a warm, modern character that stands out in an urban context.

The interior of the building is designed for everyday living and community. The residential portion offers around 350 apartments, including studios and up to three-bedroom layouts. Each unit is planned for comfort, with open layouts and generous glazing that frame city and river views. Residents can enjoy the sense of privacy that a high-rise affords, yet the design remains focused on softness and daylight.

The amenities in the tower cater to holistic living. A full floor is given over to wellness, featuring a fitness center, health clinic, spa, pool, and sauna. These spaces have been created to form an environment of well-being and a sense of community among the residents. There’s a club room for social gatherings, and the ground floor welcomes both residents and the public with a workspace, café, and an organic grocery store. The integration of retail and shared spaces at the base of the building brings a sense of vibrancy to the street level and riverwalk.

The apartments are arranged to maximize daylight and views, and the building envelope is engineered for high energy performance. Mass timber construction reduces the building’s carbon footprint compared to steel or concrete, supporting the developer’s goal of long-term sustainability. Terraces and landscaped spaces are layered into the design, providing outdoor areas for relaxation and connection with the city’s natural environment.

The Neutral 1005 N Edison St project is as much about community as it is about architecture. The inclusion of retail and wellness amenities means residents have access to daily comforts without leaving the building. Shared spaces are designed for work, relaxation, and gathering, supporting a lifestyle that values both independence and connection.

This skyscraper reflects a considerate and conscious approach to high-rise living. The project combines mass timber technology with smart planning and a focus on well-being, thereby setting a new standard for urban residential towers. Neutral 1005 N Edison St shows that tall buildings can offer more than just height—they can provide a generous, sustainable, and vibrant place to call home.

This first off-grid-ready slide-in pick-up camper from Four Wheel Campers is spacious and accommodating

Four Wheel Campers surprised the adventure community earlier this year with the release of CampOut – A pop-up truck camper that evolves with the user’s adventure requirements. The company in fact, marketed it as a “Camper you can build your way.” Pretty bold for a statement if it were from another manufacturer, but for Four Wheel Campers, known for its uncanny moves in the industry, it is just another trick.

Four Wheel is now substantiating its stance as one of the leading camping solutions experts with the launch of its first fully self-contained camper for summer camping expeditions. Calling out all off-grid adventurers, is this the moment we’d been waiting for?

The company’s first off-grid-ready slide-in camper, the Hawk+, features a welded aluminum frame, a roof made from a single sheet of aluminum for durability, and amenities such as off-grid electricity, freshwater tanks, and all-season climate control on board. The camper debuted at the recently concluded Overland Expo West, where it was demoed to sit comfortably on a 7-foot flatbed truck.

In addition to being the first off-the-grid camper, it is also the biggest, heaviest, and most fully loaded truck camper in Four Wheel’s repertoire. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that the Hawk+ actually deviates from the company’s lightweight and modular camper ideology, emphasized by the CampOut, but it is a reliable option that will let you live out a few additional nights in the woods, cozy and well supplied in the truck bed.

Accoutered for nomadic life or overland explorations that demand a camper atop the rugged wheels to be equally durable and capable of sleeping you in comfort for an extended period of time. The Hawk+ looks ready for such demands with off-grid capabilities that start with the larger onboard space well utilized for eating, sleeping, living and still making space for storage. The camper has a nice galley in the middle of the layout with storage extending round to the other side, the kitchen counter on one side and a cassette toilet tucked into the storage on the other side. Alongside is the fresh water 40-liter tank and a 5-gallon for gray water.

The kitchen is well stocked with all the necessities for cooking including stove, sink, and fridge. The rear four-person dinette can transform into a bed for two, while the main bedroom in the cab-over area fits a king bed.  The space inside is opened up by the pop-up roof if you choose the option. The power needs of the lights and various power ports onboard, when you are living where the grid doesn’t cater, is taken care of by an 810Ah lithium battery, a 500-watt solar panel, and a 2,000-W inverter. If you wish to work remotely, the Hawk+ is provided with a Starlink connection. Since adventures are limited without your gear, the slide-in camper will be provided with options for a rear Molle rack. And when you return after your sporting activity, you can take a shower outside before jumping into the bed. The new Hawk+ camper starts at $43,995 in base model, which scales up as you add in the self-contained, off-grid functionalities.

Spill-Proof Microgravity Tableware Brings Earth-Like Dining Experience To Outer Space

Space travel is often portrayed as a realm of high technology and daring exploration, but daily life in orbit hinges on details we rarely consider on Earth. Eating, for instance, becomes a challenge when gravity is no longer a reliable companion. Latvian designer Klinta Locmele has addressed this issue with her Zero collection, a line of tableware specifically designed for microgravity environments. The collection is designed with the astronaut’s needs in mind, aiming to make every meal in space feel as close to home as possible.

The collection is built around the question of how to eat comfortably in zero gravity. Traditional plates and cutlery do not work when food threatens to float away at the slightest nudge. Locmele’s solution involves engineered forms and materials that keep food contained and accessible, removing some of the awkwardness from daily routines in space. Curved surfaces and secure lids help meals stay put, letting users focus on eating rather than chasing after runaway crumbs or droplets.

Functionality is at the heart of this design. Each piece is meant to be intuitive, even for someone floating freely in a spacecraft. The collection’s pieces fit comfortably in the hand, and the ergonomics are tailored for gloved or bare hands alike. There is a sense of familiarity in the way each element feels, which is a rare comfort in the unfamiliar environment of space. The materials are easy to clean, lightweight, and safe for repeated use, ensuring that practicality is never sacrificed for aesthetics.

The Zero collection includes a reusable silicone bowl with a narrow base that keeps food gathered, and a suction cup that secures it to surfaces. The accompanying spoon has a deep well and an angular shoulder, making it easy to scoop up soups and preventing liquids from sliding down the handle. The plate features grooves that use capillary action to contain sauces and spikes that hold bite-sized morsels steady for a fork or knife. Locmele even designed a ceramic teapot for the ritualistic pleasure of drinking hot beverages in orbit. The teapot’s interior contour triggers capillary action, and its spout works as a straw, allowing astronauts to enjoy hot drinks in a way that feels familiar and comforting.

The collection’s value goes beyond mere function. Mealtimes can be deeply psychological, providing astronauts with moments of normalcy and connection. Locmele’s tableware is designed to foster this connection, using shapes and colors that evoke everyday dining rather than sterile, utilitarian tools. The tableware becomes a subtle bridge between worlds, turning a meal into a ritual that grounds the mind as much as it nourishes the body.

The unique selling point of the Zero collection is how it centers the human experience. Locmele approaches every curve and contour intending to make astronauts feel cared for and at ease, even in extraordinary circumstances. 5 Reasons Why Nothing Tag (1) Tracking Device Should Be The Company’s Next Product

We’re just less than a month away from Nothing’s flagship event for the year. It does seem like the company’s been launching new gear pretty much every alternate month, but we actually have the best products still waiting to be formally launched, with the Phone (3) and the Headphone (1) arriving on the 1st of July.

However, that doesn’t necessarily mean Nothing’s lineup is ‘complete’. The disruptive startup first burst to the scene with TWS audio gear, then smartphones, and then budget gear with their CMF lineup. They’re all set to launch their first over-ear headphones next month, but we personally think the company’s lineup is missing one crucial product. No, not a laptop, not a tablet, not a VR headset. A tracking device.

There are 5 reasons we believe a Nothing Tag (1) would be the perfect next piece in the Nothing product catalog puzzle. Here’s what they are:

1. Current Trackers Look Like Trash

Yes, trackers are auxiliary devices – they’re made to be attached TO objects, not be the object themselves… but would it kill to have a tag that looks cool? The AirTags are boring white pills that can, to the greatest extent, be customized merely by laser-engraving emojis or names onto the plastic outer shell. Don’t even get me started with Chipolo and Tile trackers, they literally look like cheap keychain danglers you get from your landlord when you rent an apartment.

The Nothing Tag (1), as demonstrated in this concept created by Ajith Sree Madhav, looks like a gorgeous bite-sized piece of tech. It doesn’t distract, but it doesn’t disappear either. It has character, charisma, and a design that enshrines Nothing’s ‘fun-meets-transparent’ design ethos. This one bares the entire tracking chipset underneath a strong transparent plastic shell, feeling highly reminiscent of the Phone (1) and (2)’s unique barebones design. In an ocean of AirTags, Galaxy Tags, and Chipolo/Tile trackers, I’d choose a Nothing Tag (1) every day of the week.

2. True Cross-Platform Experience

The object tracker market is, let’s face it, a walled garden – an oligopoly of Apple AirTags, Samsung SmartTags, and Tile, each guarding its turf. Want to find your keys? Great, but only if you’re already drinking the Kool-Aid of their ecosystem. The Nothing Tag (1) flips the bird to that. Imagine a tracker playing nice with Android, iOS, and EVEN your dusty Windows laptop, a true digital citizen. It’s not merely about finding your stuff; it’s about escaping the corporate leash. By opening up APIs for developers, a Nothing Tag (1) could spark a Cambrian explosion of community-built features, turning a simple tracker into a platform for the creatively rebellious.

3. A Community-Driven Modular Utopia

When I saw that Apple had the audacity to charge $400-something for a Hermès accessory for the AirTag on its own website, I knew we were heading down a horrible path. Cut to the CMF Phone 1 and 2, which did the opposite – creating an open framework for people to design their OWN accessories for their phone, and it really did feel like order in the universe was restored again. The Nothing Tag (1)’s slim design opens up even more possibilities for modular accessories that allow your Tag (1) to easily attach to a variety of objects, from your laptop to your keys, remote, or even something as silly as your spectacles case. Nothing has always been a community-centric company, and the Tag (1) could be yet another example of how the company rallies its users to elevate the UX of their own products – not in a gatekeeping way, but rather, in a manner that is accessible to everybody.

4. Gamified Location and Community Finding

Remember when phones were just… rectangles? Then came the Nothing Phone, with its Glyph Interface, turning notifications into a light show, a burst of personality in a sea of sameness. The Nothing Tag (1) could take that same spirit and run wild. Okay, maybe we’re not talking about full-blown Glyph integration (though picture synchronized lights on your phone guiding you to your keys!), but the underlying philosophy applies. Let’s get ambitious. What if Nothing harnessed the power of its community? Reward users who help locate other people’s lost Tag (1) items with Karma points, exclusive wallpapers, or even discounts on future products. Suddenly, you’re not just finding your keys; you’re participating in a real-world MMORPG, fueled by misplaced belongings and the kindness of strangers. It’s like Pokémon Go, but for your stuff. This whole gamified tracking concept, the community-powered finding, is about injecting a dose of fun into a mundane task. If the Glyph Interface made your phone feel a little less cold and sterile, a Nothing Tag (1) could do the same for the anxiety of losing your stuff.

5. Aggressive Pricing and Value Bundling

Let’s talk economics because, at the end of the day, that matters. Apple wants you to buy into their ecosystem, which means a $20 AirTag might sound cheap, but not when you realize it’s tethered to a minimum $799 iPhone. Nothing plays a different game. Their philosophy is about accessible tech. The Phone (1) starts at a reasonable $359, signaling a commitment to value. Now, imagine a Nothing Tag (1) priced at, say, $10. Suddenly, you’re bringing Apple-level “find my” functionality to an entirely new audience – the budget-conscious, the Android faithful, the ones who don’t want to shell out a fortune to keep track of their keys… all packaged in a design that doesn’t feel like a cheap plastic 3D-printed block, or a white case for your contact lenses.

‘data is not neutral’: federica fragapane’s soft forms visualize hard facts on inequalities

At first glance, the 16 visuals that make up Shapes of Inequalities—a new installation by the Italian information designer Federica Fragapane—don’t look like data. There are no bar graphs, no line charts, no axis labels. Instead, organic shapes unfurl across white space, like sea creatures or windblown petals. Their softness is deceptive. Installed under the overarching theme Inequalities at the 24th International Exhibition at Triennale Milano, the project translates hard, often brutal realities—economic injustice, climate crisis, gender-based violence—into a visual language that is both scientific and sensitive. It also formed the basis for a public talk Fragapane gave during the Art for Tomorrow conference, hosted in conjunction with the Triennale’s opening. In a conversation with designboom’s editor-in-chief, Sofia Lekka Angelopoulou, Fragapane discussed the politics of visual storytelling and the ethical weight of representing human experience through data.

 

‘I often say that I see my job as an alternative version of a photographer: I am photographing angles of reality,’ Fragapane says during an interview with designboom. ‘I strive to capture portions of them through my work.’ That framing—of data designer as documentarian—sits at the heart of her practice. Fragapane has built a career working with large institutions like the United Nations, the European Union, the World Health Organization, and Google, while also producing deeply personal, research-based projects on topics like migration, education access, and war. Her work now resides in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She operates somewhere between precision and poetics, applying her training in communication design to numbers that often resist simplification. Her aim isn’t to flatten complexity—it’s to give it form. ‘For me it’s important to reiterate two aspects: first of all, how data itself is not a neutral entity dropped from above, but the product of research and human actions that inevitably leave a trace, whether visible or intentional,’ she explains. ‘And so, of course, does the visualization process.’

VISUALIZING HARD FACTS THROUGH SOFT FORMS

 

For her Shapes of Inequalities project at Triennale Milano, Federica Fragapane spent months researching ten dimensions of global disparity, including access to health care, educational gaps, racial and gender bias, and climate-related displacement. Each dataset was shaped into a visual narrative—abstract, non-linear, and, in some cases, deeply intimate. ‘Some of the subjects visualized in the exhibition touch me or have touched me personally; others are far from my own experience, and I tried to observe them and give them a shape, conscious of my privileged point of view,’ she tells designboom.

 

The results are not didactic, they are contemplative, even tender. The color palette—muted reds, soft greens, cloudy purples—evokes the natural world more than the digital one. It’s intentional. ‘I often choose this organic approach when I work with data that has a living presence,’ Fragapane says. ‘It’s my way of paying homage to those lives and trying to convey that pulsating presence through form.’ This design ethos sets her apart from many working in the field of data visualization, which tends to privilege clarity, efficiency, and a particular kind of minimalism. Fragapane’s images, by contrast, invite readers to slow down. Their beauty isn’t an accessory—it’s a method. ‘Working with care on the aesthetics of my works is a way to invite people in,’ she explains. ‘A way to encourage them to look closely and read the stories I’m trying to tell through data.’

At a time when data is everywhere—weaponized on social media, simplified into clickbait, or buried in impenetrable PDFs—Fragapane’s work insists that data can also be gentle. Not less rigorous, but more empathetic. ‘I try to use what I know how to do to talk about topics I care about—that’s an extremely condensed way to describe the reasons behind some of my works,’ she notes. ‘I’m glad when others share them, use them in turn to highlight issues they care about, or when I see people discovering something new through my projects, even if those discoveries make them angry, just as they made me.’ In that way, Shapes of Inequalities becomes not just a series of visualizations, but an act of translation—and of witnessing. It asks viewers to step inside statistics not as distant observers, but as participants. The data, as Fragapane insists, is not abstract, it is alive. designboom (DB): Your works are included in the permanent collection of MoMA, while you have collaborated with Google, the UN, the World Health Organization, and many more. Can you walk us through your background and practice?

 

Federica Fragapane (FF): I work as an independent data visualization designer. This is a discipline I first encountered during my studies. I studied Communication Design at Milan Polytechnic, and I have been freelancing since 2015. What attracted me deeply at the time was the possibility of using visual elements to give a shape to information and make it more visible, and this is still the main aspect I’m interested in.

 

I often say that I see my job as an alternative version of a photographer: I am photographing angles of reality because I view the topics I explore as three-dimensional, complex, and irregular shapes, and I strive to capture portions of them through my work.

 

My presence and intervention are unavoidable, from the selection of data—the angles—to the forms in which I represent them. For me it’s important to reiterate two aspects: first of all, how data itself is not a neutral entity dropped from above, but the product of research and human actions that inevitably leave a trace, whether visible or intentional. And so, of course, does the visualization process. For me it’s very important to assert my presence and acknowledge that each drawing, while created with care and great attention to the accuracy of the information and sources, is also a reflection of my personal history.

 

I work with both complex data and very simple numbers. For example, one of my pieces acquired by MoMA tells the story of space waste: the visualization shows space debris classified by distance from Earth and by object type, and it’s relatively complex. But I also worked with very simple data, like the number of days since the Taliban banned teenage girls from school in Afghanistan and the death toll in Gaza.

DB: Visualizing information can take many forms, from text-based imagery to charts, interactive diagrams, or abstract graphics. Your approach has something unique in the way it employs soft forms, organic shapes, and vibrant colors to deliver hard facts. What kind of data do you mostly work with, and what is the role of aesthetics within your practice?

 

FF: There are indeed multiple modes of expression in data visualization, and I’ve worked with different visual languages myself. In some cases, I design simple, geometric charts—both interactive and static—that are more commonly associated with the traditional visual alphabet of data visualization. But as you mentioned, I also often use organic and soft shapes. The choice depends on the context and on the data.

 

I’ve worked for decision-makers, scientists, academics, the UN, and the European Union, and in those cases I’ve used the more conventional approach. But from the very beginning of my practice, I also started working on topics that are personally meaningful to me: migration, gender inequality, human rights violations. In those cases, I tend to use a different language.

 

I often choose this organic approach when I work with data that has a living presence, the presence of the people, and living beings, behind the numbers. It’s my way of paying homage to those lives and trying to convey that pulsating presence through form. Finally, for me, working with care on the aesthetics of my works is a way to invite people in. A way to encourage them to look closely and read the stories I’m trying to tell through data.

DB: One of your projects that embodies this transformation of harsh, ugly numbers into soft, organic forms is Shapes of Inequality, now on view as part of the Triennale. Can you tell us more about it and how it fits into the overall theme of the 24th International Exhibition, Inequalities?

 

FF: For Shapes of Inequalities, I created a dedicated series of works: 16 data visualizations exploring 10 topics, some of the many faces of inequality. The visualizations present data on economic disparity, social mobility, gender and ethnic discrimination, the climate crisis, access to resources, life expectancy, and migration. The shapes I traced reflect the deep asymmetries, distances, and shifts in scale revealed by the data.

 

Over the past months, I’ve worked with harsh, ugly data, telling stories of both familiar and lesser-known realities. Some of the subjects visualized in the exhibition touch me or have touched me personally; others are far from my own experience, and I tried to observe them and give them a shape, conscious of my privileged point of view. My hope is that the forms I’ve created will encourage visitors to read them.

DB: Beyond the visual aspect, what kind of impact do the images you create have? How do they contribute, or you you hope they contribute, to tackling inequality?

Modular seating system for public spaces focuses on wellness

North Carolina-based contract furniture company Here Now has introduced Tate, a new modular seating system designed with wellness, flexibility, and user comfort in mind. Emerging from a world reshaped by the pandemic, Tate is more than a product—it’s a response to how we gather, work, and connect in shared environments today. Fast forward a decade, and now we’ve got a soda-can-sized contraption that hums with the potential of 28 CPU cores and over 100GB of RAM. Built around the modular muscle of up to seven Raspberry Pi Compute Modules (CM4 or CM5), the NanoCluster takes ARM architecture and folds it into a compact, extensible setup that feels more like LEGO for sysadmins than an actual compute platform. Each compute module plugs into its own M.2-style adapter board – svelte and minimalist – bringing up to 16GB RAM and a quad-core CPU per node. Seven of these together puts you at a theoretical 112 gigaflops, which, for comparison, can outpace the base M2 MacBook Air in some parallel workloads. Not bad for something that fits in your palm.

The whole system draws power either through USB-C using a 65W GaN charger or via PoE++, offering up to 60W. Here’s where things get spicy: power and cooling are tightly intertwined in this setup. Stressing the CPUs too much – like running `stress-ng –matrix 0` on all six or seven modules – starts to push the boundaries of the system’s power budget, leading to throttling or outright node instability. Temperatures creep past 85°C, and the fan, which hovers around 58 dB at full tilt, kicks into jet-engine mode. It’s functional, but far from whisper-quiet.

What really sets this board apart is the inclusion of a managed RISC-V network switch tucked beneath the main board. It offers VLAN support, port toggling, and console access, though currently the interface is stuck in Chinese with a few browser hiccups. Still, the fact that you can control the entire cluster’s network behavior from any node is impressive, especially when you realize that the whole thing runs on 20 to 70 watts, depending on load.

And while the single 1 Gbps uplink does present a bottleneck for data-heavy workloads (Ceph over this network would be a stretch), individual nodes get full gigabit access. That’s more than enough for most hobbyist-grade Kubernetes deployments, distributed AI workloads like Llama, or even CI/CD pipelines using tools like distcc. In fact, a full kernel compile drops from 45 to 22 minutes with just four nodes humming in harmony.

Design-wise, the board is clearly built for tinkerers. Every inch reveals a decision made with modularity in mind: M.2 adapters, USB-C ports, NVMe SSD support, and even a redundant power configuration that switches between PoE and USB-C based on load demand. It’s not plug-and-play; you’ll need to flash OS images, understand power limits, and maybe even tweak a fan control script that didn’t work out of the box. But that’s part of the charm.

At a price point ranging from $50 to $150, depending on configuration, the NanoCluster invites experimentation without the gut-punch expense of enterprise gear. It’s not ideal for everyone – and definitely not for those allergic to the idea of debugging UART headers or reading through wiki pages – but for devs, educators, and anyone curious about distributed systems, it’s a sandbox worth jumping into.

You probably won’t replace your workstation with this thing. You won’t mine crypto, or render Pixar-quality animations, or host a billion-user database. But you WILL learn. And in a world where we casually carry LLMs in our pockets, having a pocket-sized supercomputer for hands-on experimentation feels like a natural next step. Welcome to the era of distributed soda-can computing.

Five years after their first spatial intervention, Clap Studio returns to Valencia, Spain, for the redesign of OVEN Club, which transforms the beloved nightlife venue into an immersive furnace of sound and sensation. Tapping into the visceral imagery of the club’s name, the new interior concept channels the intense, kinetic environment of an actual oven, where heat, transformation, and vibration converge. 

 

Clap Studio juxtaposes cold, reflective stainless steel with richly hued Alpi wood finishes in red and black, creating a visual temperature gradient that mirrors the emotional arcs of a night out. The result is an atmosphere that feels simultaneously industrial and psychedelic, minimal yet sensorial. Light bounces, textures shimmer, and surfaces breathe with energy. A horizontal screen behind the DJ booth adds another layer of immersion, pulsing in sync with sound and light to draw the crowd deeper into the experience.

MVRDV’s Portlantis is a modular, energy-positive building composed of five stacked, twisting boxes totaling 3,533 square meters.
