That’s exactly what happened when a creative maker decided to pay homage to the infamously addictive Flappy Bird by building a mechanical, fully playable version. Flappy Bird took the mobile gaming world by storm in the early 2010s, captivating players with its deceptively simple gameplay and pixelated charm. When the game disappeared from app stores, it became even more of a legend as we remembered it with as part nostalgia, part challenge, and, for some, a collector’s holy grail.

Since a lot of things that were hugely popular back “in the day” are now considered cool and retro, it’s not a surprise that some people would try to bring it back in some form or another. Some would probably just be content with re-creating the app and bringing it back to the digital world but there are some creative people out there that would rather bring it up to another level. If you look at Engineezy’s YouTube channel, you’ll see a lot of truly creative and detailed builds so it’s no wonder he came up with something like this.

So what if you could play Flappy Bird without a screen? That’s where the mechanical version swoops in. This project reimagines Flappy Bird as a physical arcade game, ensuring that the fun and eventual frustration never have to vanish into digital obscurity. This isn’t just a static display or a cute homage. The mechanical Flappy Bird game is completely playable. Instead of tapping a screen, you mash a real button to keep your bird aloft. The “pipes” you need to dodge are 3D-printed and mounted on a rotating conveyor system, which randomly adjusts their height, just like in the original game. The moving obstacles and the bird’s flapping action are all brought to life with motors and clever mechanical design, capturing the spirit of early electromechanical arcade games.

For collectors and makers, the use of 3D printing, custom electronics, and physical craftsmanship gives this project a unique, tactile appeal. It’s not just memorabilia but is more interactive art. Bentley’s engineering team developed solutions that cut through the characteristic gusty conditions while maintaining unobstructed views of The Atlantic, downtown Fort Lauderdale, and Miami’s skyline. This wind protection performs with sufficient effectiveness that outdoor dining and entertaining remain comfortable despite the 61st-floor elevation. The engineering solution demonstrates precision aerodynamic design that solves common problems in high-rise coastal residential projects through technical innovation rather than architectural compromise. The 22-foot ceiling heights throughout the interior create volumetric space that allows natural light to penetrate deep into the residence while supporting air circulation systems necessary for Florida’s subtropical climate. Gil Dezer’s Hydraulic Car-Lift Revolution

The Dezervator system represents Gil Dezer’s patented vehicle-elevator technology that debuted at the Porsche Design Tower in Sunny Isles Beach, where residents park cars in the building’s core. The system combines hydraulics and electric drives to lift vehicles with drivers inside directly from ground level to in-unit garages without requiring occupants to exit their cars.

RFID tags identify each vehicle and trigger LED guidance systems that direct cars to the proper elevator shaft. Once inside the elevator, the system grips vehicles by their tires and transfers them via robotic shuttle into stacked garage configurations. Transparency around the elevator shaft provides sweeping views during the ascent, turning the parking process into a scenic experience. The Porsche Design Tower installation spans 60 floors with three Dezervators, accommodating up to four cars per residence on east-side units and three on west-side units.

Spigen Apple Watch charger mimics iconic iMac G3, comes in four original colors

The Spigen Apple Watch Classic C1 Charger Stand for the Apple Watch is not as compact, portable, and innovative as my fast charger that completely eliminates the cable and offers a USB drive-style device comprising a magnetic puck and a USB-C dongle. Nor is it anything like this useful charging cable you can use to juice up any gadget on one end and the Apple Watch on the other. Yet, the Spigen offering is the finest of them all; not just for its recognizable appearance, but also its functionality.

Apple Watch Ultra is arguably the finest smartwatch you can own right now. Garmin has its fan base, but the more casual takers wouldn’t deny the reliability and quality of the Ultra. It is equipped with a powerful processor and high-quality display, but the battery tends to let you down. At least I have to put my watch on its puck almost every night before dozing off, and that’s how I cannot monitor my sleep patterns or have a quick glance at the time in the middle of the night since the watch is lying flat on the nightstand atop its rudimentary charger.

For those who love all things Apple, and have a special place in the heart for the iMac, the new Spigen charger, inspired by the looks of the Apple iMac G3, is waiting to change the little bit of the everyday Apple Watch charging woes. What really stands out, and should make my life simpler, is the slanted front of the accessory, which the company says, should make for a more comfortable viewing angle when you want to check the time on the watch between charges.

The charger with a design mimicking the iMac G3 has a white slanting front where the Apple Watch clips on magnetically, while the back is (like the original) a colorful translucent shell. Interestingly, the Spigen Classic C1 doesn’t come with its own charger; you will instead have to use your own charging puck, threading its USB cable through the iMac G3’s body and stationing the magnetic puck on its front. The rear shell of the accessory is made from polycarbonate, while a silicone base ensures the charging stand grips well on the tabletop. The Spigen Apple Watch Classic C1 Charger Stand is compatible with all Apple Watches after Series 4, including the Watch Ultra versions. The charger would also let users juice up their AirPods Pro 2.

If you’re interested in what Spigen is delivering, you would have to shell out a minimum of $34.99 for it. For this affordable price, you get a classic mini-Macintosh you can use to charge the Apple Watch. It comes in those recognizable Tangerine, Graphite, Bondi Blue, and Ruby colors. The charger is available in the US through the brand’s website and Amazon, while its possible release in Europe and other parts of the world is still under wraps.

FCBStudios blends industrial heritage with low-carbon design

 

Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBStudios) has delivered a major redevelopment in central Sheffield, UK, titled Heart of the City. Commissioned by Sheffield City Council and delivered with strategic development partner Queensberry, the project forms part of a long-term urban regeneration initiative, introducing a multi-building, mixed-use neighbourhood on a historically significant site. The structure is anchored by three core buildings: Elshaw House, Cambridge Street Collective, and the restored Leah’s Yard.

 

Instead of adopting a singular large-scale intervention, the masterplan overlays new structures onto the existing urban grain. The design integrates retained listed facades, reopens blocked routes, and introduces new connections, including a pedestrian street or ‘ginnel,’ linking the north and south of the site. The circulation network is supported by a central grand stair and carefully considered public realm enhancements. The approach preserves elements of industrial heritage while creating conditions for commercial activity, cultural use, and employment. Once complete, the area is projected to support up to 7,000 new jobs.

Heart of the City Preserves Heritage Through Adaptive Reuse

 

Cambridge Street Collective transforms a deteriorated city block into a multi-programmed food and events hub. It incorporates 200-year-old street frontages and the Grade II-listed Bethel Sunday School, now used as a venue for live performances and events. The building’s core program is Europe’s largest purpose-built food hall, supported by restaurants, a cookery school, and a rooftop bar. The material palette, corten cladding with black steel detailing, emphasizes a raw, adaptable aesthetic, enabling the space to transition between daytime and evening use. The block is intended to serve as a year-round public destination, supporting Sheffield’s cultural and hospitality economies.

 

Elshaw House, adjacent to the food hall, is a fully electric, Grade A office building delivering 70,000 sqft of high-performance workspace. Designed to meet high sustainability benchmarks, it holds a five-star NABERS UK energy rating and achieves 40% less embodied carbon than the national average. The building incorporates mixed-mode ventilation and smart building systems to reduce operational emissions. A south-facing rooftop terrace provides outdoor amenity, while the dark metal facade references Sheffield’s industrial legacy. The building also contributes to the active frontage of the masterplan through ground-level retail and cafés. Law firm DLA Piper has committed to occupying the top floors.

 

Leah’s Yard is a courtyard of 19th-century metalworking workshops, recently stabilised and adapted for contemporary maker use. Retaining its Grade II-listed status, the project accommodates over 20 studio units and small shops arranged around a central public courtyard. Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios’ team undertook Conservation work with a low-carbon approach, focusing on fabric retention and minimal intervention. The configuration supports independent retail and creative industries, allowing the structure to operate as both a production space and a public destination. It plays a central role in maintaining local identity within the overall development framework.

The Heart of the City development by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBStudios) addresses current and future urban conditions, including changing work patterns, decentralised retail, and cultural programming. Passive environmental strategies, embodied carbon retention, and the reuse of heritage structures are central to the project’s long-term sustainability. A Wireless, Color E-Paper Sign that Can Go 200 Days Without Recharging

Signmaking shops must’ve been thrilled with the digital printing revolution, as drawing boards gave way to Adobe software and large-format printers. But new signage technology threatens to take away their business altogether. Samsung’s EMDX is a wireless, battery-powered color e-paper display. Because e-paper technology only draws power when you change the display, if you change the image just once a day—as a café might, for instance—it can last for up to 200 days on a single charge. And at 32″, it’s a pretty good size.

As for how you get the actual image onto the device, Samsung offers both an app and a cloud-based interface where you can design your image using templates. Alternatively, you could create it with external software and use the app to import your image to the sign.

Samsung is targeting schools and offices, as well as the retail, transportation and healthcare sectors. For now at least, the technology is expensive enough that the customer base will be institutional, as opposed to say, mom-and-pop coffee shops. As long as these things stay at $1,200 each, baristas will still need good penmanship.

The smartest among us do not even try to rely on sheer willpower, instead turning to apps and services that promise to block out distractions. Sadly, these digital helpers do not always deliver, and sometimes they ask for more time, money, or personal data than most of us are willing to give.

That is where this AI-powered DIY lamp comes in, bringing back the classic method of shaping behavior: immediate, memorable consequences. In this case, it takes the form of a desk lamp that does not just shine a light, but gets hilariously angry when it catches you slacking off. There is something delightfully old-school about a gadget that reacts with a scolding glare and a grumpy voice, all in the name of keeping you on track.

It all began as a bit of a joke, the kind of idea you toss out with no real intention of making it happen. But as the pieces started coming together, it became clear that this could actually be a clever way to help people build better habits. Now, the lamp is a real, working device that glows a fierce red and shouts at you whenever it spots a phone on your desk; no excuses, no mercy, just instant feedback.

Building the lamp is surprisingly approachable for anyone with a bit of DIY experience. The main ingredients are a Raspberry Pi 4, a Pi Camera HQ, a ring of programmable LEDs, and a small speaker. Toss in a 3D-printed or laser-cut shell, and you have got all you need. The camera keeps watch over your workspace, while the Raspberry Pi runs a custom-trained AI model that can spot a phone in an instant.

What sets this lamp apart is how simple and effective it is. All the image processing happens right on the device, so you do not have to worry about your camera sending anything to the cloud. The lamp does not keep logs or track your habits, it just reacts in real time, rewarding you with a calming white glow when you stay focused and unleashing its full fury when you slip up. The immediate feedback makes it much harder to ignore your own bad habits.

That does not mean it is perfect. You will need a bit of tech know-how to put everything together and train the AI if you want to tweak what it looks for. The lamp also needs to be placed just right, with good lighting, to do its job well. But for anyone willing to dive into a fun project and who needs a little extra push to stay off their phone, this lamp is hard to beat.

Combustion Inc’s Braun-Like Barbecue Accessories

For some barbecuing is an art, for others, a science. For that latter camp, tech company Combustion Inc has developed two high-tech products. Their Pitmaster Bundle consists of a large, easy-to-read temperature gauge with a digital readout, and a manual dial that drives their Combustion Engine, a wireless, rechargeable blower that you attach to your grill or smoker’s exterior, near a vent or air intake.

The dial in particular makes me think of classic Braun products.

The gauge links to the included wireless thermometer, and can provide readouts of both the grill/smoker and whatever piece of meat you’ve got the thermometer stuck into. You can order extra thermometers and monitor up to four pieces of meat, in addition to the grill/smoker itself.

These are new products that won’t launch until later this summer. Buy-in isn’t cheap: The bundle goes for about $500, though they’re currently taking pre-orders for $467.

Remedial Design: A Bully Stick Holder That Prevents Choking

Bully-stick-style dog treats aren’t form-follows-function, but form-follows-manufacturing-source-material. Prepare to be grossed out: Bully sticks are made from the cow part no human wants to eat, the pizzle. Pizzle is a fancy word for penis, and slaughterhouses are happy to unload them.

The pizzle is cut into strips, cooked and dried. Dogs love them, and have no problem holding the shaft-like form with a paw while gnawing them shorter and shorter. The problem comes when they’re down to the end: With no more shaft to hold onto, dogs tend to swallow the last bit, which can lodge in their throat.

Entrepreneur and ex-Marine Michael London fed a bully stick to his dog Finn, who eventually swallowed the last bit—which became lodged in his throat. Emergency vet care was required to remove it. London subsequently designed this Bow Wow Buddy, which is essentially UI design for dogs.

You insert one end of the stick into the device, then turn the dial at the end, which drives a large screw to clamp the stick against spikes molded into the interior of the object.

Dogs cannot dislodge the stick (provided it’s thick enough), so they simply chew it down until no part of it is accessible. And the profile of the object provides an ergonomic paw-hold.

When they’re done, the owner removes that last inch of stick and discards it.

It’s made of BPA-free nylon, is manufactured in the U.S., comes in multiple sizes, and runs $28 to $38.
