Neolith made quite the splash at Salone del Mobile 2025 with what might be their biggest product launch yet. The Spanish manufacturer rolled out four new surface designs that tackle real architectural challenges while pushing material technology forward.

Their April presentation in Milan had thousands of visitors checking out the latest innovations. The timing couldn’t be better, as architects and designers are actively hunting for alternatives to traditional materials that deliver superior performance without giving up on looks.

The Atmosphere Collection: Digital Texture Technology Changes Everything

The Atmosphere collection is Neolith’s answer to what commercial and residential projects actually need today. Each of the four models tackles specific aesthetic and functional challenges while keeping the durability that makes sintered stone surfaces worth specifying. The collection shows how smart manufacturing can create surfaces that nail both technical performance and visual appeal.

The big news here is digital texture technology that creates surface variations mimicking natural stone formations. This manufacturing process adds microscopic surface irregularities that give you visual depth and tactile interest while keeping surfaces easy to clean. It directly addresses the biggest complaint about engineered surfaces: they look too uniform and fake compared to natural materials.

The digital process controls texture depth and pattern distribution with precision you just can’t get from natural stone extraction. Manufacturing parameters can be adjusted to create specific surface characteristics while maintaining consistency across production runs. This level of control means architects can specify exact aesthetic requirements while knowing they’ll get reliable performance. The technology works for large-format installations that maintain visual flow while adding subtle variations that prevent the boring, repetitive look common in engineered materials.

WhiteSands and Rapolano: Two Takes on Natural Inspiration

Available in standard thicknesses of 3mm, 6mm, 12mm, and 20mm, WhiteSands works for tons of different applications. The thinner profiles handle wall cladding and furniture applications, while thicker options work great for countertops and flooring installations.

Rapolano uses the same digital texture technology but goes in a completely different aesthetic direction inspired by Italian travertine formations. The surface brings warm earth tones and subtle mineral patterns that create depth variations under changing light. Interior designers are already specifying Rapolano for hotel lobbies and restaurant installations where sophisticated warmth matters. Both materials share identical technical specifications and installation flexibility, with the shared manufacturing platform ensuring consistent performance characteristics.

The material’s UV resistance makes both surfaces work for interior and exterior applications without color fading. Installation flexibility covers multiple mounting systems, from the HC system for hidden chemical fixation in facade applications to traditional mechanical systems for interior installations. Project specifications can be tailored to specific performance requirements without messing with aesthetic continuity.

Artisan and Ignea: Residential Warmth Meets Commercial Drama

Artisan focuses on refined surface treatments that emphasize craftsmanship aesthetics. The design incorporates subtle tool marks and surface variations that suggest hand-finished materials while maintaining sintered stone’s technical advantages. The surface works particularly well in residential applications where homeowners want materials that feel authentic but perform reliably. Artisan’s matte finish reduces glare while providing stain resistance and durability, and unlike natural stone, it doesn’t need sealing and resists staining from common household substances.

Ignea completes the collection with a focus on serious visual impact. The surface incorporates deep color variations and bold veining patterns that create focal points in architectural spaces. Commercial architects are showing particular interest in Ignea for lobby installations and feature walls where visual impact is the priority. Available in sheets up to 3200mm x 1600mm, Ignea minimizes visual interruptions in grand architectural spaces while maintaining its appearance under heavy use in high-traffic applications.

Technical Performance and Installation Flexibility

Neolith’s Atmosphere collection sticks with the company’s standard thickness offerings: 3mm, 6mm, 12mm, and 20mm. Application recommendations vary by thickness, with paneling applications using 3mm through 6mm options, while paving requires 6mm through 20mm thicknesses. The material’s technical properties include UV resistance, heat resistance up to 300°C, and zero porosity, enabling applications ranging from kitchen countertops to exterior building facades without performance issues.

Installation methods depend on application requirements and structural considerations. Facade systems include the HC system for hidden chemical fixation and the VM system for mechanical ventilation. Interior applications typically use standard adhesive mounting with proper substrate preparation. Quality control maintains consistency across production runs, ensuring color and pattern matching for large projects requiring multiple shipments.

Sintered stone shows superior performance characteristics compared to traditional countertop materials. Durability testing reveals higher resistance to heat, scratches, and stains than quartz or granite alternatives. The non-porous surface eliminates sealing requirements while providing superior stain resistance compared to granite. Heat resistance exceeds quartz capabilities, allowing direct contact with hot cookware without surface damage, which proves significant in commercial kitchen applications where thermal shock resistance matters.

Sustainability Meets Market Leadership

The Atmosphere collection incorporates up to 98% recycled materials in its manufacturing process, supporting Neolith’s “Zero Waste” policy. Glass, ceramic waste, and mineral byproducts contribute to the raw material mix without compromising final product quality. Energy-efficient production processes complement the recycled content strategy through reduced resource consumption, with Neolith’s Castellón facility integrating automated systems that minimize waste generation throughout the manufacturing cycle.

Steve McQueen presents Bass (2024) at Schaulager in Basel, an immersive color and sound installation with over a thousand LED light tubes. One of the acclaimed British artist and Oscar-winning filmmaker’s most abstract works to date, the exhibition stages the light and sound that distinguishes Steve McQueen’s artistic practice. The installation was co-commissioned by the Laurenz Foundation, Schaulager Basel, and Dia Art Foundation in New York and remains at Schaulager Basel between June 15th and November 16th, 2025. Inside the museum, light and sound congregate as deep bass frequencies resound through the space, transitioning to and from loud and soft reverbs as individual notes or melodies. The interior is bathed in Steve McQueen’s Bass, a series of colored light tubes that change slowly, from deep red to ultraviolet, covering the entire spectrum visible to the human eye. 

 

In the vast interior of Schaulager Basel, over a thousand LED light tubes are temporarily installed in the architecture’s ceiling, spanning across the building’s five levels, including the soaring atrium. A column of subwoofers and speakers is suspended in the air in the middle of the installation, and from here, the bass frequencies travel through, shifting slowly alongside the deep hues of colored light tubes. ‘What I love about light and sound is that they are both created through movement and fluidity. They can be molded into any shape, like vapor or a scent; they can sneak into every nook and cranny. I also love the beginning point where something isn’t a form as much as it is all-encompassing,’ says the British artist and filmmaker.

Basslines inspired by the cycle of colored light

 

In 2022, the Laurenz Foundation and the Dia Art Foundation invited Steve McQueen to design a project that would first be shown in New York and then at Schaulager Basel. When the artist walked into the cavern-like, lower-level space at Dia Beacon, he decided he would work with light and sound instead of a film, resonating with the cellar-like space devoid of daylight. He felt that it was destined to accommodate an immersive work where the installation would interact with the architecture. ‘There is a commonality in the bass, the vibration, the reverb, and the tone. It seems like a calling, an interplay, a form of communication between scattered people. For me it was a way of bringing a diaspora back together,’ says Steve McQueen. From here, Bass took shape.

 

The starting point is the basslines. The artist worked with the renowned bassist Marcus Miller, who in turn involved four other musicians, to create the composition of Bass. The intergenerational group from the Black diaspora met at Dia Beacon in January 2024 and started improvising, inspired by the cycle of colored light that was already installed. The recording of the musicians’ session became the score of Bass, heard through speakers placed throughout the exhibition space at Schaulager Basel. In this score, the clarity of Marcus Miller’s jazz bass intertwines with the plucking and bowing sounds created by Laura-Simone Martin and her acoustic upright bass. Mamadou Kouyaté’s bright, driving rhythms on the traditional bass ngoni are joined by the deep droning sounds of Aston Barrett Jr.’s barely plucked electric bass, while the same instrument in Meshell Ndegeocello’s hands produces sonical textures.

Music and sound have been a consistent theme throughout Steve McQueen’s works. Many of his award-winning films feature soundtracks that transform the visual experience into something multi-sensory and physical. This effect filters through the artist’s masterful use of light and color, too. At Schaulager Basel, Bass presents an immediate, dynamic interplay between light, color, and sounds, slowly deconstructing our perceptions of time and space. The feeling resembles being submerged in a sonic ocean, where visitors are enveloped by bass frequencies, deep currents, and intense hues. These expansive oceanic frequencies, lasting around three hours, are woven together with the entire color spectrum, presented in a roughly thirty-minute cycle.

 

‘Bass could travel anywhere because it’s about light and sound. It could be an amalgamate, it can morph in any space because it’s about light and sound anywhere,’ says Steve McQueen. The colored light appears mythical and transient, despite the slow progression of the transition. Even so, the effect is immediate and physical, drawing sensations of warmth and cold, expansion and contraction. This fluidity continues; Steve McQueen’s sound, light, and color installation at Schaulager Basel has no clear beginning or end, no specific viewpoint or focal point. Instead, visitors find their own sense of orientation and place within the experience. Steve McQueen’s installation Bass is present at Schaulager Basel in time for Art Basel Week 2025, between June 15th and November 16th.

After four years of renovation, the Grand Palais in Paris fully reopens following a major transformation led by Chatillon Architectes (find designboom’s previous coverage here). The project, which began with the unveiling of the restored Nave for the 2024 Olympics, is the most extensive restoration in the building’s 120-year history. Spanning 77,000 square meters, the work improves public access, brings back long-concealed architectural elements, and adapts the historic structure to meet modern cultural and technical needs.

Chatillon Architectes reveals the true identity of the building

 

Paris-based Chatillon Architectes focused on restoring the original layout of the building, which had become fragmented over time. They studied over 3,000 archival plans and drawings to guide the work, aiming to respect the original design of the monument while updating it for contemporary use. New exhibition spaces, restaurants, and circulation routes are added, with over 40 elevators and 30 staircases introduced to make the building fully accessible.

 

‘The Grand Palais is a powerful symbol of France’s cultural legacy – iconic and instantly recognisable, yet so much of its beauty has been hidden for decades,’ says François Chatillon, founder of Chatillon Architectes. ‘We didn’t set out to reinvent it, but through a process of revelation we wanted to uncover its identity. This renovation was about bringing it back to life, staying true to its spirit while opening it up for the future and giving the monument back to the people.’

 

Built for the 1900 Universal Exhibition, the Grand Palais was originally designed by a team of architects led by Charles Girault. It combined Beaux-Arts architecture with then-revolutionary materials like steel and glass. In later years, parts of the building were damaged, altered, or closed off, reducing access and hiding many of its key features.

The renovation reopens the original central axis, allowing visitors to move freely from Square Jean Perrin to the Seine. This new connection forms what the architects call a ‘place centrale’, an open area created by combining the Rotonde d’Antin, the Salon Seine, and other interior spaces. One major change was the removal of a wall separating the Nave from the Palais de la Découverte, restoring a sightline that hadn’t been visible since 1937.

Lighting and technology enhancements throughout the galleries have transformed them into versatile spaces for a wide range of exhibitions. The Centre Pompidou will use these spaces while its own museum is being renovated. Other public areas include a mezzanine-level café, Le Réséda, led by Michelin-starred chef Thierry Marx, and a new brasserie, Le Grand Café, overlooking the Champs-Élysées gardens with interiors by Joseph Dirand.

 

Interior partitions are replaced with glass to bring in light and expose the building’s original proportions. Every element, from doors over six meters tall to statues, ornaments, and 150 windows, was carefully restored. ‘At Chatillon Architectes, we strive to revitalize historic landmarks, such as the Grand Palais, as both emblematic monuments and vibrant cultural spaces,’ shares Simon Chatillon, partner of Chatillon Architectes. ‘We approach cultural projects with a strong sense of place, developing thoughtful and innovative interventions that bring renewed energy and help define their future.’

 

The gardens surrounding the building have also been redesigned, visually connecting to the nearby Champs-Élysées. More than 60,000 plants from 250 species were added to support biodiversity, using a rainwater-fed irrigation system built into the renovated roof. A new pedestrian entrance at Square Jean Perrin replaces a former road and improves the site’s integration with the city.

Kalager Design’s Powder-Coated Wire Furniture

These airy furniture pieces are by Danish furniture brand Kalager Design.

The simple geometry and Cartesian look reminds me a lot of Laurids Gallée’s work, visually speaking, though the material choices of each couldn’t be more different; Gallée works in resin, while Kalager’s speciality is powder-coated steel wire. Kalager’s pieces are thus suited for both indoor and outdoor use.

In my opinion, the pieces don’t look as substantial or visually interesting when the volumes they enclose are too small or too large, as below:

However, there’s a volumetric sweet spot for me, one where the visual density makes the pieces really click:

Kalager has picked up U.S. distribution through Teak New York, a furniture brand specializing in Scandinavian brands.

Honda Launching Urban Bike-Lane-Based Delivery System

Honda has announced they’re launching Fastport, a B2B venture for delivering packages in urban markets. The company has designed this Fastport eQuad, a electric quadricycle, specifically to haul packages using bike lanes, avoiding both emissions and traffic.

The eQuad runs on Honda’s swappable Mobile Power Pack (MPP) batteries, reducing downtime. The UV-resistant canopy can be tinted for sunny cities, and a built-in fan helps keep the driver cool.

The company says they’ve designed both large and small cargo boxes (we assume the images here show the large unit) that can be customized for different delivery needs. The large panels on the side will presumably be used for branding.

Speaking of branding, I’m surprised by Honda’s restraint; these days most manufacturers would have their name slathered all over the thing.

The eQuad will make its debut later this month at the Eurobike show in Germany. The Fastport service is scheduled to launch in North America and Europe later this year.

According to the information from its press release, by wearing this sleep monitoring band every night, the user can have near-accurate and in-depth insight about their sleep pattern, ‘and a more complete picture of fitness and recovery.’ As part of the brand’s innovative health and wellness products, the band designed to be worn around the upper arm takes the overnight sleep data and uploads it to the Garmin Connect app where this information syncs with other vitals recorded on Garmin smartwatch, so any gaps in data can filled with cross-sharing of information, which is where increase in data accuracy is a possibility.

The Index Sleep Monitor is a small Apple Air Tag-like device that slots into the band, which is available in two size configurations – XS to S and M to XL. Being lightweight and cumbersome to sleep with, the band is required to be worn every night for better and more accurate performance. You can easily remove the hardware from the band and wash it without worrying. The device has a seven-day battery life and comes with an interesting smart wake alarm. This is a subtle vibration the device makes to wake you up when it detects you’re in the lightest sleep stage during your pre-scheduled wake-up time. This is to ensure you wake up peacefully and not jolt out of your deep sleep. In addition to the sleep tracking and usual health monitoring, the $170 Index Sleep Monitor tracks women’s health data, utilizing the skin temperature to offer insight into period prediction and ovulation windows, and Body Battery, which is the company’s body energy monitoring technology.

I live in a city where outdoor public seating is a rarity. When you’re walking around, especially in oppressive heat, there is no place to temporarily sit and rest. But even cities that have enough benches and seats for public use aren’t that friendly and useful for older people. It’s a “one-size-fits-all” kind of seating that don’t take into consideration the special needs of the elderly. They need seats that have supportive features and are not as rigid as regular seats since their backs, legs, and arms may not be as strong as others.

RİVO is an ergonomic urban furniture solution created specifically to support elderly individuals in social spaces. Unlike standard benches, this concept features side elements that act as supportive handles, making it easier and safer for users to sit and stand. These handles provide stability and confidence, addressing a genuine need for safe, accessible seating. Each part is produced modularly and assembled by welding, then finished with electrostatic paint to withstand the elements.
