In modern times, where most speaker designs follow sleek, minimalist trends aimed at blending into modern interiors, few attempt to make a bold visual statement. The majority prioritize portability, connectivity, or smart features, often at the expense of long-term value or distinctive form. Challenging this landscape of functional sameness, the AA67 speaker emerges as a striking exception. Created through a collaboration between conceptual design studio Alaska Alaska and precision electronics label Caliper, the AA67 challenges the conventions of audio hardware by fusing sculptural aesthetics with acoustic performance.

Rooted in Alaska Alaska’s ethos of reinterpreting meaning and recontextualizing iconic forms, the AA67 draws direct inspiration from Slovenian designer Saša Mächtig’s legendary K67 Kiosk—a modular structure celebrated for its bold design and utilitarian legacy. This influence is evident in the speaker’s commanding presence and functional elegance.

Atelier Siyu adds angular volumes to workspace in Shanghai

 

In Shanghai’s Changning District, Atelier Siyu breathes new life into a former industrial shell with the renovation of Kaixuanfang Studio, a 760-square-meter workspace that has served as the client’s headquarters for nearly a decade. Without altering the basic layout, the design team undertakes a strategic reprogramming of the two-level interior.

 

The architects revamp this hybrid creative workspace, part photography studio and part office, introducing new volumes, angular geometries, and adaptive design gestures to improve circulation and help things run more smoothly. The project explores contrasts by combining logical planning with expressive design gestures, where rectilinear forms transition into dynamic alignments that frame views, connect spaces, and introduce moments of surprise.

 

A key intervention on the ground floor is a skewed meeting room, what Atelier Siyu calls a ‘box’, placed at a 15-degree angle within the orthogonal shell. This move sets off a ripple of indirect circulation routes and spatial overlaps that break up the previously straightforward floor plan. With dimensions of 4.2 by 7.2 meters, the box holds a 12-person conference space and acts as a spatial hinge, connecting the public-facing reception and photo studio with a series of more private functions, including a theater, sample room, and equipment storage.

By intentionally misaligning new and existing planes, the designers at Atelier Siyu introduce a sense of motion and spatial depth. Subtle lighting interventions further amplify this layered geometry, playing off the angled surfaces to create an atmosphere that shifts throughout the day.

 

One of the most striking design features appears right at the entrance, where Atelier Siyu reworks the existing staircase to directly connect the entryway with the reception area. By removing and repositioning part of the stair, they improve how people move through the space and turn the stair into a standout vertical element. The area beneath it now hosts a small pantry, visually tied to the front desk and kitchen with light brick cladding laid out in angular patterns. The stair itself, painted black, framed in red steel, and set on a grey concrete base, brings a bold, industrial feel to the space. Openings between the stair and reception are carefully placed to maintain visual connections while still offering a sense of privacy.

Along the window-facing wall on the first floor, the studio found a thick, 600-millimeter wall made of concrete and added steel. Instead of tearing it down or covering it up, Atelier Siyu decided to work with it in a practical way. They neatly fitted things like air conditioners, fire extinguishers, and trash bins into the wall at just the right heights, creating a smart, multi-use area that frees up floor space and helps organize the studio better. To balance light and privacy, parts of the wall are covered with glass bricks, which not only fit the building’s industrial look but also gently soften the light inside.

Upstairs, the ceiling drops to just 2.3 meters under the original beams, a challenge that the architects embraced with bold, geometric shapes. They added irregular metal structures between work areas to create clear boundaries, change how the space feels, and open up certain spots. Private offices for administration, finance, and management are enclosed with slanted glass walls that line up with these metal shapes, creating overlapping crystal-like effects that make the space feel bigger than it is. 

 

To handle electrical wiring on the second floor, where running cables under the floor wasn’t an option, Atelier Siyu used vertical columns that quietly carry wires from the ceiling down to the desks, turning necessary infrastructure into part of the design.

 

The renovation of Kaixuanfang Studio turns a straightforward, practical space into a flexible, creative place to work by thinking through how people move, how light flows, and how each area is used. It’s a workspace that shapes how people navigate the space and connect with each other, thanks to angled lines, smartly placed walls, and framed views that reveal new ways of seeing the building.

reisarchitettura’s L-shaped extension completes traditional stone house with six trulli in italy

olive groves surround Trullo GR in the hills of Fasano

 

REISARCHITETTURA’s Trullo GR renovation and expansion project of a typical Apulian structure in Puglia, Italy, creates two independent residences for owners and guests. Located in the hills of Fasano, the traditional stone structure is surrounded by 8,000 sqm of olive groves. A pathway bordered by dry stone walls and two monumental oaks leads to a semicircular courtyard, providing access to the residence. The original building, dating back to the early 1900s, consisted of three ‘casedde’ and six ‘trulli,’ structures with sloping and conical roofs, traditionally used as dwellings and tool sheds by local farmers, as well as a flat-roofed section added in the 1960s.

 

The renovation included demolishing the newer part and replacing it with a perpendicular extension, forming an ‘L’ shape with the existing structure, housing the main residence’s living area, and featuring large windows that open to the garden and pool to the north. The new volume is connected to the existing structure by a recessed glass passage that serves as the main entrance, reducing its visual impact. The sleeping area is in the first two trulli and three ‘casedde’ to the south, with three independent bedrooms. The four trulli to the north house the guest residence, with a living room, kitchen, and two en-suite bedrooms. In the garden and around the pool, there are two gazebos, one large for the owners and a smaller one for guests, along with an outdoor shower and oven.

REISARCHITETTURA’s renovation respects Apulian tradition

 

The designers at REISARCHITETTURA opted for materials and finishes that respect Apulian tradition, with contemporary details. Minimal interventions were made on the existing structure: the stone walls were cleaned, sealed, and, where necessary, supplemented, while the exterior was repainted with white lime, and the interior plaster was restored. The new volume, made of exposed tuff stone, is also whitewashed for continuity. The original flooring in the first two trulli was preserved, while in other rooms, where more recent flooring was present, it was replaced with smooth, minimal concrete, as in the new extension. The external windows and interior doors are made of natural oak, and the outdoor flooring includes local stone, washed concrete for the perimeter walkway, and wooden decking around the pool, comfortable for walking barefoot.

 

The focus on traditional materials is combined with sustainability and energy efficiency. Climate control is provided by a heat pump powered by solar panels installed above the new extension, while a cistern beneath the external flooring collects rainwater for reuse. The lighting is LED-based for low consumption and long life, and a smart home system allows remote control of installations, optimizing energy use and comfort. Finally, an integrated sound and outdoor lighting system enhances the poolside atmosphere.

If you told me a few years ago that Meta would be coming for the action camera market, I might have laughed. They’ve tried hard to make cameras cool (remember their Portal device that bombed so badly because of impending backlash from the Cambridge Analytica scandal?), but somehow it never worked. The company has already sold millions of Ray-Ban Meta units, proving that consumer appetite for smart eyewear exists. Now they’re doubling down with hardware specifically engineered for athletes, weekend warriors, and content creators who need hands-free recording during high-intensity activities. The newly debuted HSTN boasts 3K Ultra HD video capture, packs eight hours of battery life, and comes wrapped in Oakley’s unmistakably athletic DNA.

The incremental upgrade from the Gen 2 Ray-Bans is absolutely obvious. With the HSTN, Meta wants to put the action in action camera and probably sprinkle a bit of AI secret sauce too. The design, internals, and target audience are vastly different compared to the Ray-Bans, even though the broader intent is the same. The Oakley Meta HSTN is designed for sweat, speed, and spectacle. Mbappé is their poster child (among other world-class athletes), because if you want to sell performance, you tap a World Cup winner, not a coffeehouse poet. The message is loud: these glasses were made for people who move, not just people who pose.

Let’s get nerdy with the hardware. The Oakley Meta HSTN packs a 3K Ultra HD camera right into the bridge of the frame. It’s a huge leap over the Ray-Ban Gen 2’s 1080p shooter, making this the first mainstream smart glass product with specs that could keep up with action cams from DJI, Insta360, and GoPro. Most of the planters that I see though look the same but the plants and flowers are the ones that bring the design. That doesn’t mean that the container cannot be as beautiful as well.

The frame is actually angled to ensure durability and elegance. The lateral openings are the visual windows that lets you display your plants or flowers while the elevated base makes it look like your plant babies are floating. The materials used for the planters are two “honest” materials, specifically natural treated wood (oak or ash) and recycled concrete with visible aggregates. Custom molds are used for the concrete so you get clean, resilient surfaces. Every joint and angle in this planter was actually calculated to get the structural and visual balance.

Shelter can be both an indoor or outdoor planter and can fit medium-sized plants or decorative arrangements. It can be placed in entryways, terraces, offices, or just any space in your interiors. This $7,000 Electric Micro-Car has already overtaken Toyota’s EV sales in Japan

Japan’s newest EV sensation isn’t a sleek Tesla or BYD competitor, or a futuristic concept car. It’s a $7,000 single-seater that’s smaller than some American closets. The Mibot, created by Hiroshima-based startup KG Motors, has captured the imagination of a nation traditionally resistant to pure electric vehicles, and for good reason.

The Mibot stands under 1.5 meters tall with a design that balances between being adorable and pragmatic. It addresses a fundamental truth about Japanese urban life: space is precious, and most vehicles are oversized for their actual use. “Cars are simply too big,” explains KG Motors founder Kazunari Kusunoki, whose frustration with oversized vehicles navigating Japan’s narrow streets led to the Mibot’s creation. He’s clearly tapped into something, because the car is currently more popular in Japan than EVs from homegrown behemoth Toyota.

The specs are straightforward: a 100km range, 60km/h top speed, and a 5-hour charging time using standard outlets. They’re exactly what you’d get from an electric motorcycle or scooter – just in a roofed, four-wheel, two-door format.

Despite its small size, the Mibot includes modern essentials such as air conditioning for Japan’s humid summers, a small trunk for daily necessities, and over-the-air update capability. Production begins this October at KG’s new Hiroshima factory, with plans to deliver 300 vehicles to Hiroshima and Tokyo customers by March 2026, followed by 3,000 more nationwide.

The Mibot’s significance extends beyond its cute exterior. It represents a fundamental rethinking of what mobility should cost, how much space it should occupy, and what features actually matter for daily use. In an industry focused on excess in range, power, and size, the Mibot’s minimalism feels revolutionary. Think what a pre-fab cabin is to most bungalows or villaments, or what the iPod Shuffle was to the bulkier Discman.

The price is where the Mibot truly disrupts the market. At ¥1 million, roughly $7,000 to $8,930, it costs half as much as Japan’s current EV bestseller, the Nissan Sakura. This price point transforms EVs from aspirational purchases to practical transportation solutions. The market has responded enthusiastically, with KG Motors pre-selling over 3,300 units, surpassing Toyota’s entire 2024 EV sales in Japan.

The Mibot arrives at a critical moment for Japanese mobility. With EV adoption at 3.5% compared to the 18% global average, Japan’s automotive industry risks falling behind. The Mibot doesn’t compete with family cars but creates a new category: the personal urban EV. It is telling that 95% of pre-orders come from households that already own at least one vehicle. The Mibot handles the short trips that constitute most urban driving.

For aging Japanese in rural areas with declining public transport, or young urbanites priced out of car ownership, the Mibot offers accessibility without complexity.

we+ explores Microalgae pigments as a sustainable color source

 

Tokyo-based design studio we+ presents SO-Colored, a material-focused research project that investigates the color potential of microalgae during Milan Design Week 2025. While microalgae have been widely studied for their applications in food production and biofuels, their chromatic characteristics remain underexplored. This project proposes a design-oriented approach to understanding and utilizing microalgae-derived pigments as a sustainable source of color.

 

Microalgae are microorganisms present across various environments, from water and rocky surfaces to roadsides and indoor spaces. Having emerged approximately 2.7 billion years ago, they are significant to the Earth’s ecological history, particularly for their role in oxygen production and biodiversity development. Contemporary research highlights their potential in fields such as CO2 absorption, pharmaceutical development, alternative energy sources, and functional food.

SO-Colored showcases design applications for bio-based colors

 

SO-Colored centers on the range of natural hues found in different microalgae species. While commonly associated with green, microalgae can also produce red, yellow, and blue pigments depending on their species and environmental conditions. These colors are derived without artificial additives and are distinguished by their depth and variability.

 

In collaboration with Algal Bio Co., Ltd., we+ design studio developed a new material by blending powdered microalgae with naturally derived resins. This composite is used to fabricate a series of objects, demonstrating how bio-based pigments can be integrated into physical design applications. The project contributes to broader discussions around renewable materials and non-synthetic color systems in contemporary design practice. SO-Colored is a collaborative development project by we+ and Algal Bio Co., Ltd., utilizing algae powder developed by Algal Bio as a key coloring material.
