One of my goals for the rest of the year is to actually start the thing that I promised myself I would start at the beginning of 2025: running, or at least brisk walking. One of the problems that I faced before, when I was still doing that, was that I did not invest in good running shoes. The ones I used were either not that comfortable or would show wear and tear just a few weeks in. Nike has been recommended to me many times, and seeing that they will soon be releasing next-level sneakers may encourage me to finally invest in a pair.

Nike has announced the next level of comfort and performance in running shoes with their Vomero Premium and Vomero Plus. These two new silhouettes build on the beloved Vomero line, a favorite among runners and casual wearers who crave plush cushioning and all-day support. Both are engineered to make running and walking easier on the body, highlighting their advanced midsole technology.

These elements reflect the different cultures and backgrounds of the people who live in Raval, many of whom are returning to live in this newly restored space. ‘The project is both a refurbishment of a historic building in central Barcelona and a tribute to the memory and cultural roots of its inhabitants,’ notes Josep Miàs, director and founder of MIAS Architects.

Internationally recognized MIAS Architects maintains the integrity of the original structure while reconfiguring the interior into a series of open, light-filled spaces that invite connection and comfort. Lady Raval is made up of two parts, one facing the street and another L-shaped wing that wraps around its central courtyard. Over the years, these spaces had been broken up into tiny units, with makeshift additions, even on the roof, making the building feel cramped and chaotic. The architectural team removed these additions and brought back a clearer layout, with two apartments per floor in the front building and three per floor in the wing. They kept the two staircases, added a lift in each section to make the building accessible, and a shop on the ground floor that still opens out onto the street, staying part of the daily life of the neighborhood.

Working closely with architect and ceramist Carlos Jiménez Cenamor, MIAS Architects use handmade ceramic frames in the courtyard to bring in patterns and shapes inspired by the cultural backgrounds of the residents. These ceramic details are tied to personal and collective stories, helping the space feel familiar and full of meaning. The colors are bright and warm, and together with plants that hang from balconies, they give the courtyard a sense of life.

 

MIAS redesigned Lady Raval’s circulation areas, staircases, landings, and hallways so they feel open and welcoming. With added windows and carefully placed openings, light passes through the whole building, and people can see and connect with each other.

The 2025 Core77 Design Awards Branding & Identity Winners

Winning the Professional Branding & Identity category is We & I from Dentsu, led by Taichi Tamaki, Ryota Sugahara, and Miki Taguchi. When rock band RADWIMPS, represented by Universal Music, decided to write a graduation song- a choral performance that is a part of high school graduation in Japan – they were hired to create its visual identity. RADWIMPS is particularly popular among young people, and by using a high school chorus as a metaphor, they created a series of overlapping line silhouettes, while adding a hidden image that could only be discovered with a common study tool.

The winning Student entry in Branding & Identity went to Desert X from Yingying Zhu at ArtCenter College of Design. Desert X is renowned for its large-scale land art exhibitions set within desert landscapes. The rebrand emphasizes the intersection of cultures, humanity, and nature, exploring space and time while leveraging digital technology to create an immersive and cohesive visitor experience.

The jury team for the 2025 Branding & Identity category was led by Jury Captain YanYan Zhang an Associate Partner and Executive Creative Director at VSA Partners. Zhang put together a jury which includes: Kelly Bjork a Partner at IDEO, Michael Braley the Creative Director at Braley Design, and Liz Oh a Senior UX Design Manager at HubSpot.

The 2025 Core77 Design Awards Branding & Identity category honors a visual design system, or elements of a system which communicate brand philosophy and values, visually and experientially–conveying a desired image of a product, company, or organization. Projects include logos, custom typefaces, color palettes, and complete brand identity systems.
