In the fast-changing fabric of Ho Chi Minh City’s District 2, where narrow streets weave between cafés, residences, and storefronts, Studio KHOA VU completes Ts VEIL restaurant, a project housed in a renovated, three-story, 300-square-meter villa. Rather than starting from scratch, the architects chose to preserve the core concrete frame, staircase, and roof of the existing structure, layering new spatial and climatic possibilities over its bones. Anchored by a distinctive perforated metal facade that breathes, shades, and even cools, the project reimagines what a small-scale urban intervention can be in a tropical megacity under pressure.

The name Ts VEIL reflects the central design gesture of the Vietnamese practice Studio KHOA VU, including a porous second skin that shrouds the building like fabric. Made of expanded metal mesh supported by a custom steel and precast concrete substructure, the veil offers both functional and poetic expression. At the building’s corner, where the site tightens, the mesh peels open to form a shaded entry threshold that invites passersby inward.

 

Designed for Rehab Station – Social Dining, the project combines hospitality with a deep interest in climatic responsiveness. The outer screen doubles as an environmental device, as its perforations encourage cross-ventilation, while a built-in misting system injects moisture into the hot Saigon air, producing localized microclimates during the city’s most stifling months.

Inside, Studio KHOA VU collaborates with local studio Siri Interior to craft a tactile atmosphere. The architects introduce a second, inner ‘skin’, this time through a palette of glass block, exposed concrete, steel detailing, and wood finishes. The resulting spaces are raw, filtering daylight through semi-translucent walls and revealing textures that shift from cool and industrial to warmly ambient as the day unfolds.

Sony Game Controller Concept dazzles with a ‘goo’ inspired translucent see-through design

Is this the future of transparent tech? The designer at ‘An Improbable Future’ definitely thinks so. With its almost organic-yet-cyberpunk aesthetic, this ‘goo’ controller feels weirdly alien yet equally inviting. There’s no way your hands can resist wanting to grab the controller’s handles and just experiment a bit with gameplay.

Before you get your hopes up, An Improbable Future’s creation is an AI-driven one. The designer works on alternate-reality products (most with Sony’s branding) visualized using AI image and video generation tools. Their catalog includes everything from the standard tape recorder and camera, to even odd products like cars. And Sony’s worked on all of them either way…

Designer: An Improbable Future

This controller’s silhouette may be simple, but the design and materials make it stand out. It feels like a controller within an alien-like skin. The outer ‘goo’ is translucent, revealing the electronics within. The handles are completely see-through, with this cloudy, frosted finish. the action buttons exist beneath the ‘skin’, creating a rather odd yet somewhat appealing sensation while playing. Like the controller is a living thing.

This feels in a way like the future of the tech movement created by companies like Nothing. While Nothing pushed for products to ditch opaque exteriors for transparent ones, this controller takes a step further by ditching the transparent plastic/glass for something that feels less ‘inorganic’. The controller has organic curves, and even an organic-ish material that somewhat resembles something collagen or cellulose-inspired, for lack of a better term. It might put some people off, I’m not one of those people.

The rest of the controller’s fairly normal. Standard joypads on the left and right, under-shell lighting that shines through, and I can’t really tell what that dark/navy blue element between the handles is, but my guess is either some transmitter, battery pack, or plug-and-play speaker. An Improbable Future doesn’t ‘explain’ their work… and AI famously doesn’t justify its design choices either.

How Architecture Is Helping Save Thailand’s Elephants with Empathy and Care

In the heart of northeastern Thailand’s Taklang Village, where humans and elephants have coexisted for over four centuries, a quiet architectural revolution is taking shape, one rooted in empathy, ecology, and interspecies care. Thai architect and designer Boonserm Premthada brings this powerful vision to the global stage with Elephant Food House, presented at the 24th International Exhibition of Triennale Milano under the theme Inequalities.

Premthada’s project is more than an architectural showcase; it is a call to action, responding to the deepening crisis of elephant food scarcity in Thailand. With forests depleted by deforestation, urban sprawl, disrupted crop cycles, and climate change, the elephants of Taklang Village, now numbering over 200, face dwindling sources of nutrition. The surrounding forest, once a generous provider of sustenance, no longer meets the needs of these giants. In this increasingly strained landscape, Premthada offers a gentle, yet radical solution: architecture that nourishes.

Designer: Boonserm Premthada

At the center of this proposal are traditional Thai rice barns, once vital for storing grain for human consumption, now reconfigured to serve as shelters for elephant food. These barns, reimagined as Elephant Food Houses, are scattered along forest paths, functioning as collection points where villagers bring bundles of fresh plants. Designed with sensitivity to both form and function, they are constructed with timber frames and encased in handwoven bamboo winnowing baskets, agricultural tools from the region that have been scaled up and recontextualized. Their breathable, lightweight surfaces offer protection and natural ventilation, making them ideal resting points for both elephants and their human companions during long walks through the forest.

This act of walking, of movement through space and shared environment, is intrinsic to the project’s success. The treks to the shelters aid in the elephants’ digestion and promote their overall health, restoring a rhythm once defined by seasonal migration and free foraging. Along these routes, the shelters offer not just nourishment, but shade, pause, and connection. In this way, the architecture fosters mutual reliance, a humble form of interdependence between species.

At Triennale Milano, Premthada distills the essence of this project into a compelling installation. A partially enclosed timber structure replicates the airy barns of Thailand, with the woven bamboo facade foregrounding regional craft. Inside, a striking figure commands attention: a Vitruvian Elephant, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s famous Vitruvian Man. This sculpture, made from paper crafted using elephant dung, reflects the cyclical nature of waste and nourishment. “The very material where my elephant-centered and nature-centered design began,” Premthada notes, using this symbol to illustrate his belief that the built environment must embody empathy and sustainability.

For Premthada, inequality is not limited to the human realm; it is also about how we treat the non-human lives we share the planet with. His design promotes an ethos of care, not dominion. “Inequality, in my view, is not about granting rights to animals but about fostering empathy that humans should have for other living beings,” he shares. The Elephant Food House thus becomes a physical and philosophical framework, a shelter built not just of bamboo and timber, but of compassion and ecological wisdom.

By repositioning a structure traditionally reserved for humans into a shared, interspecies resource, Premthada opens a broader conversation about architecture’s role in a world of entangled ecologies. He calls this vision a Human and Non-Human Nation , a recognition that humans are not separate from nature, but part of a larger, interconnected system. The Elephant Food House does not seek to dominate that system, but to honor it. It does not monumentalize architecture, but softens it, allowing it to breathe, to nurture, to coexist.

As it stands in Milan, half a world away from the forests of Taklang, the Elephant Food House brings with it the voices of elephants and villagers, the scent of bamboo and dung paper, and the soft sound of empathy woven into every wall. It is a reminder that meaningful architecture doesn’t always build up. Sometimes, it humbly shelters.

Death Stranding 2’s real-world ring terminal brings game gear to your finger

Few game creators blur the line between fiction and reality like Hideo Kojima. Known for embedding symbolism and visual storytelling into every artifact of his game worlds, Kojima has now taken that philosophy one step further by bringing a piece of Death Stranding 2’s gear into the real world. The Ring Terminal, worn by characters such as Sam Porter Bridges and Fragile in-game, has been faithfully recreated as a wearable collectible in a collaboration between Kojima Productions and Hong Kong-based design studio Anicorn.

This 1:1 scale replica is a functioning piece of hardware, though not in the high-tech sense. While it doesn’t project holograms or manage cargo routes, it is built with impressive mechanical precision, housing 30 micro-engineered parts made from brass and stainless steel alloy. The body has been shaped using electroforming and five-axis CNC machining, and its finish is treated through electroplating to give it a metallic patina that will evolve over time as an intentional nod to the game’s aesthetic of weathered, lived-in tech.

What adds a modern edge to this relic-like design is its embedded NFC chip. While its full functionality remains a mystery, the chip offers a symbolic digital interaction (possibly unlocking exclusive content), acting as a collector’s ID, or storing a virtual credential. There’s also a printed mock display built into the surface, matching the visual language of the in-game model. The ring adjusts to fit US sizes 3 to 15 using a unique internal gear mechanism, allowing it to adapt comfortably to a wide range of finger sizes. Despite its complexity, the design functions like a wearable art piece—more sculpture than smartwatch. Each ring comes housed in custom packaging marked with the Bridges insignia, linking it back to the game’s fictional courier network.

Retailing at $240, the Ring Terminal launched via Anicorn’s online store on June 26, with shipping slated for September 2025. Quantities are limited, which aligns with its identity as both a fan collectible and a design object. While previous Death Stranding merchandise has included timepieces and cufflinks, the ring feels especially personal, worn on the hand, tied to a character’s identity, and filled with layered meaning. What the ring ultimately does remains deliberately vague—something fans have come to expect from Kojima’s long game of narrative breadcrumbs and thematic mystery. But even without a defined digital function, it stands as a conversation piece and a symbol of the game’s influence beyond the screen.

For those who connect deeply with Death Stranding’s world-building, the Ring Terminal bridges the space between narrative immersion and real-world presence. It’s not just a prop or a nod to fandom—it’s a crafted, wearable expression of a universe where every object tells a story, even when it keeps part of that story untold.

Heys Café by BREND: A Flexible, Material-Driven Space in Osaka

 

Located near the river in Nakanoshima, Osaka, Heys Café is a newly constructed coffee shop designed by BREND. The project responds to the brand’s concept of ‘no barriers’ by creating a space where varying materials and functions coexist within a compact footprint of approximately 33 sqm (10 tsubo).

 

To balance seating capacity with a sense of openness, BREND introduced a built-in volume that serves as outdoor bench seating. The café’s street-facing facade incorporates operable steel sashes, allowing for flexible enclosure and ventilation while encouraging interaction between interior and exterior spaces. The overall facade concept intentionally softens the boundary between indoors and outdoors, promoting fluid movement of air and light throughout the space.

Considering materiality, BREND’s design team utilizes Mino ware tiles for both the bench and table finishes, a material characterized by uneven color variation, adding visual texture and continuity. The surrounding walls feature a plaster finish in a color range closely matched to the tiles, creating a cohesive material palette while highlighting subtle differences between surface treatments.

 

The café’s furniture is designed with flexibility in mind. Stackable elements allow the interior layout to adapt easily for alternative uses outside of regular business hours, supporting a variety of spatial configurations.

YOD Group Completes Mushroom-Themed Dining Space

 

YOD Group completes the newly opened dining hall for Grybova Hata (Mushroom House), a well-known restaurant located in the Ukrainian Carpathians. As the restaurant’s name suggests, mushrooms serve as both the culinary focus and a conceptual design theme for the interior.

 

The design reinterprets elements of traditional Ukrainian hospitality through a minimalist spatial language. Organic curves, a natural color palette, and the use of raw, eco-conscious materials define the aesthetic approach. The interior relies on just two primary materials: textured plaster and locally sourced travertine, quarried near Ternopil. These material choices establish both visual simplicity and contextual relevance.

Mushrooms influenced not only the visual narrative but also the material palette. Much of the furniture was fabricated in Ukraine, supporting local craftsmanship. The design process by YOD Group architectural practice prioritized sustainability, with several custom elements developed from recycled and bio-based materials. Lighting fixtures were created by designer Valerii Kuznetsov using recycled plastic and incorporate integrated handwashing stations. The hostess stand features natural chaga mushrooms, referencing the species’ tendency to grow on tree trunks in the region.

 

A notable feature within the space is a series of custom-made curtains produced from mushroom-based biotextile. Designed by Dasha Tsapenko, the installation includes six sculptural curtain pieces shaped like outerwear and sheepskin coats, along with one rectangular panel. These pieces were woven from coconut and hemp fibers, then inoculated with polypore mushroom spores and cultivated under controlled conditions for three weeks. The resulting mycelium formed an uneven, organic surface texture. Grybova Hata’s Dining Layout is Rooted in Regional Food Culture

 

The dining layout organizes seating around three thematic islands, each referencing a different aspect of the local culinary tradition. These include an area focused on cheese, featuring the region’s characteristic cheese horses; a section dedicated to meat, showcasing traditional shovdary (smoked pork legs); and a spirits-focused zone highlighting herbal distillates made from regional botanicals.

 

‘This architecture organically grew within the existing restaurant space, just as a mushroom grows from its mycelium. It embodies the ideas of locality and organic development, rethinking traditional materials and celebrating the culinary heritage of the region,’ says Volodymyr Nepyyvoda, Managing Partner at YOD Group.

Meet the BareBag: The Ultimate Hands-Free EDC Companion That Holds Your Bags

I think it’s safe to say we’ve reached peak EDC when our EDC needs EDC! Bags and backpacks are a mainstay in the everyday carry domain, but the problem with bags and backpacks is that we still only have two hands. Two hands – one of which could be better put to use holding a phone, while the other holding a matcha latte. So what do you do when you have bags but no place to hold them? You wear them. That’s what the BareBag is attempting – but on steroids.

Built out in two designs, the BareBag is a crossbody bag that’s also designed to hold your other bags. Originally designed for users with disabilities and dexterity issues, the bags themselves work as storage, but also come with a uniquely designed format that lets you further hook/clamp other bags onto your self, holstering them around your shoulder so your hands are free to do whatever they need, whether it’s texting a friend, checking your maps, or using any of your other EDC.

Modern problems call for modern solutions, although the team at BareBag knows that one design can’t possibly fit all needs – hence the creation of two separate bag designs – the Classic 2 and the Nano 2. Both share the same core DNA of hands-free modularity, but they diverge dramatically in execution and purpose. The Classic 2 weighs 298 grams and functions as your daily urban companion, while the Nano 2 tips the scales at just 155 grams and serves as the ultimate minimalist’s tool. These represent two fundamentally different approaches to the question of what we actually need to carry and how we want to carry it – the way a car and a motorbike serve the same need but in fundamentally different ways.

Classic 2

The Classic 2 feels like your ‘classic’ cross-body pouch, but with a clever external dual-hook exoskeleton integrated directly into the bag’s recycled polyester body. The hooks turn dead space around your body into functional carry zones for shopping bags, umbrellas, jackets, or anything with a handle. The magic happens when you’re out running errands and suddenly need to juggle coffee, takeout, and an impulse purchase. Instead of becoming a human octopus, you simply hook items onto your Classic 2 and keep moving without breaking stride or dropping your phone. The two hooks can either hold two separate items, or stably hook one item to prevent it from swinging around too much while you’re on your outdoor errand run.

The bag itself is small but spacious enough to house your phone, portable charger, tissues, earbuds, lipstick, and more. There’s a dedicated card pocket for your payment/access/membership cards, and even though the Classic 2 prides itself in its compact form factor, it packs expandable storage right in the upper flap. The Disc System is uniquely functional, but has a fashionable appeal too, thanks to its swappable design. Just interchange discs on the Nano 2 like you would change a tie to radically alter the appeal of your suit. This prevents the minimalist approach from becoming limiting by giving you visual options without permanent bulk. The same ButterSlide adjustment and four-layer padding from the Classic 2 ensures the Nano 2 maintains comfort despite its featherweight status. To counter for its small size, the Nano 2 also packs a gear loop system, or a ‘corrugated’ strap to the side of the disc, giving you multiple loops to hang different gear.

Built-in RFID protection blocks electronic pickpocketing without adding bulk, while the internal organization keeps cards and micro-essentials secure. Where the Classic 2 goes big on external attachment, the Nano 2 focuses on adaptability through its push-and-twist Nano Disc System.
