As Vlore, Albania, continues to evolve along its Adriatic shoreline, Oppenheim Architecture introduces a fresh layer to the city’s waterfront fabric with a large-scale development. Set at a junction between the old town, the Soda Forest, and a newly built marina, the Vlore Beach Urban Development spans a 20,465-square-meter site and adds 89,320 square meters of new construction. At its heart is a central pedestrian promenade that runs from boulevard to beach, intended as a public spine that connects architecture with landscape and everyday life with the larger rhythms of the city.

 

The masterplan draws on the structure of Albanian village clusters, spontaneous, irregular, and shaped by social closeness, reimagined here through a series of nukli, or small-scale urban blocks. These colorful, human-scaled buildings are organized around shared spaces and stitched together by a civic corridor lined with cafés, squares, shops, and shaded public areas. The intent is to support a street life that feels open-ended, including spaces for markets, performances, casual gatherings, and informal rituals.

Stone and Timber compose the Human-Scaled Blocks

 

For these low-rise buildings, the team at Oppenheim Architecture uses stone, lime-based plasters, and timber detailing, referencing local construction techniques without replicating them. Their ground floors remain porous, encouraging overlap between commercial and communal activity. Above, shutters and screens introduce texture and rhythm while hinting at vernacular patterns, translated into a contemporary vocabulary.

 

Three towers, set within the block structure, rise above the otherwise modest scale of the neighborhood. Their positioning preserves view corridors and open space, while their facades follow the same design language to keep the architectural conversation consistent. 

 

Vlore Beach Urban Development treats the site as a point of convergence, a place where the natural and built environments, the inherited and the emerging are layered.

The Axion is Closer to the Flying Car We All Imagined

The flying car everyone imagined in the 20th century was, well, car-like.

As the 21st century rolled in, that image morphed into something insectoid, powered by a multitude of rotors or turbines that vastly affect the vehicle’s form factor.

However, Dallas-based aerospace company FusionFlight is developing something closer to the 20th-century vision of a flying car: A passenger compartment, and little else. They’ve done this by eschewing rotors and working with jets.

Company founder Alexander Taits is a mechanical engineer, in case the vehicle’s design didn’t tip you off. His Axion is a personal VTOL powered by pairs of micro-jets at each corner, and the bulk of the craft is occupied by two 15-gallon fuel tanks. These can be filled with regular “gas-station diesel,” the company says, and can then haul a 176-lb. pilot at 225 mph for 15 minutes.

The company says the hot gas emitted by the micro-jets doesn’t reach the ground during take-off or landing, and so doesn’t damage the landing pad surface. (Indeed, in the demo video below, you can see the Axion’s predecessor taking off and landing on grass.) They also say that should one of the eight jet engines fail, the vehicle can automatically execute an emergency safe landing sequence with the remaining seven. Furthermore, they point out that being jet-powered, the Axion “is not as susceptible to inclement weather as other propeller and winged-based vehicles.”

If this all sounds too good to be true, it’s worth noting that FusionFlight has chops. The company was founded in 2016 to develop the JetQuad, Axion’s predecessor; that vehicle is essentially an autonomous Axion designed to carry emergency medical supplies.

FusionFlight has drawn the attention of the U.S. Navy, the Air Force, the Army and DARPA. That said, if the company is producing a version of either the JetQuad or the Axion for the military, they aren’t saying. But they are pitching the Axion to the consumer market, and are soliciting purchase requests. The asking price is $290,000, and there’s a 12-month lead time.

This FRAMA Shelf Library System is storage furniture designed to be visually light and airy.

While the wall-mounted system wouldn’t make sense for say, renters in NYC—where drilling into walls gives your landlord an excuse to withhold your security deposit—it may make more sense in Copenhagen, where the FRAMA brand is from.

The wall-mounted members also don’t jive with U.S. 16″-on-center stud construction standards; instead the spacing is determined by the shelf widths, which are multiples of 20cm. (In Europe, studs are typically spaced at 60cm-on-center.)

That said, for U.S. customers who are comfortable dealing with wall anchors and landlord wrath, the system provides a more modern alternative to enclosed cabinets or freestanding shelf units. The shelves are available in natural wood, stainless steel and a powder-coated warm white. The company reckons they have applications in every room in the house, from kitchens to home offices to living rooms and bedrooms.

Pagani unveils the Huayra Codalunga Speedster, an open-air interpretation of the coupé version the car manufacturer introduced in 2022. Designed by the Pagani Grandi Complicazioni division, the vehicle was sketched by Horacio Pagani, inspired by the racing cars of the 1950s and 1960s. The manufacturer expects to produce only ten examples, and the deliveries of the open-air Pagani Huayra Codalunga Speedster start in 2026. Works of artisans find space in the interiors of the vehicle. The first are the solid-milled metal parts like the gauges and meters, chiseled delicately by hand until they become small sculptures on the dashboard.

 

The racing-car influences of the previous eras come through the steering wheel and gear knob, reinterpreted using a carbon fiber frame, mahogany inserts, and aluminum rivets hammered and polished by hand. Throughout the interiors, the feel of the 1960s cabin spills over, with finishes in semi-matte. The car manufacturer also develops a fabric especially for the open-air Pagani Huayra Codalunga Speedster, drawn from the techniques used in haute couture. The pattern takes design cues from the four-exhaust symbol of the Pagani Hypercars, which is a system of circles multiplying and overlapping. Each embroidered element has over 450,000 individual stitches, all made by hand, and owners can see them on the fabric dressing the seats, door panels, and center console.

For the open-air Pagani Huayra Codalunga Speedster, the car manufacturer uses a new monocoque, which unites the body and the frame in one piece. The headlights are injected into the body, so they look like they are carved into the surface. The front bumper includes a splitter that pushes the air under and around the car. For the front window, the team lowers it so it connects with the roof or top, making the entire frame look like a teardrop when viewed from above, and the shape is softer compared to the company’s other hypercars. The side windows take inspiration from the race cars in the 1940s and 1950s, having a lower shape and curve at the back. The hardtop roof is removable too, and when it is on, it creates a continuous look from the front window to the rear.

 

Tradition plays a role in the design, with the doors opening sideways instead of raising upwards. Hidden air channels are under the car for ventilation and to give the open-air Pagani Huayra Codalunga Speedster a clean and smooth look. The roll bar, found at the back of the vehicle, connects the outside green shade to the semi-matte interiors, creating a visual flow from the exterior to the dashboard and gear lever. The rear bumper includes an air diffuser and two aero fins, which help push the car down to the road at high speeds, and the taillights look like they are floating. Then, there are six pipes around the car for the exhaust system, each made with titanium and ceramic coatings.

Suspension system forged from aluminum alloy

 

For the monocoque of the open-air Pagani Huayra Codalunga Speedster, the car manufacturer uses Carbo-Titanium HP62-G2 and Carbo-Triax HP62, which makes the frame robust and lightweight at the same time. The suspension system, which helps stabilize the car, is made from forged aluminum alloy and has a double-wishbone layout. It also has variable-rate springs and coaxial shock absorbers so the suspension can change and adapt depending on the drive. The car’s braking system, made in partnership with Brembo, is made from carbon-ceramic, and at the front, the brake discs are 410 mm wide and 38 mm thick, with 6-piston calipers. 

 

At the rear, the discs are 390 mm wide and 34 mm thick, with 4-piston calipers. The open-air Pagani Huayra Codalunga Speedster also has monolithic avional wheels, produced from a single piece of metal, and they are 20 inches at the front and 21 inches at the rear. They are fitted with Pirelli Trofeo R tires, which are high-performance tires used in racing. The design of the vehicle was inspired by cars from the 1950s and 1960s. The design team wants to bring this back, but not just the feeling of it. They want to revive the look, too. From 2026, ten owners of the open-air Pagani Huayra Codalunga Speedster can drive the vehicle and admire the sculptures throughout it.

In summer of 2025, Swedish artist duo Bigert & Bergström present Broken Greenhouse / Embodied Climate Futures in Lund’s Botanical Garden. The site-specific installation explores projected climate pathways through five sculptural greenhouses. The exhibition is a collaboration between the artists, climate researchers from Umeå University, and the Botanical Garden, using architectural form to visualize the UN’s Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) for the year 2100. Each structure represents a different SSP scenario, translating scientific data into spatial and material experiences.

Five Climate Futures Interpreted Through Greenhouse Structures

 

SSP1 takes the form of a tube-shaped green greenhouse designed for circular living. Its systems are synchronized with diurnal rhythms, turning the space into a functioning environmental clock. SSP2 is materialized as an inverted red greenhouse resembling a cottage, where visitors can suspend themselves in a flagpole hammock. A third structure, SSP3, uses the shape of a rising line graph to structure a walk-through installation. Beaded glass curtains represent climate data, allowing visitors to physically engage with abstract metrics. SSP4 is embodied in a fractured greenhouse located in a more isolated section of the garden. Its cracked surfaces evoke a dried-out desert. The final installation, designed by Bigert & Bergström Studio, SSP5, is a brown greenhouse emitting smoke, symbolizing stagnation and high-emission trajectories.

Stefano Boeri unveils football installation in Manchester

 

At this year’s Manchester International Festival, The Playmaker by Stefano Boeri Architetti brings the spirit of football legend Sandro Mazzola into the heart of a gallery space. Part of the exhibition Football City, Art United, set inside the industrial halls of Aviva Studios – Factory International and on view until August 24th, 2025, the installation invites visitors to experience football as a way of moving, thinking, and remembering. 

 

The Playmaker is made up of three cylindrical modules, like small arenas, where people can move freely. The walls are punctuated by circular holes, some small, others larger, based on suggestions from professional footballers. Visitors can pass through them, stretch, duck, twist, or even invent new moves. The floors are covered with graphic patterns by Mexican artist Eduardo Terrazas, adding rhythm and color to the experience, while the lighting design by Prema Mehta turns the whole environment into a stage.

Football City, Art United pairs artists and footballers

 

Part of a larger group show curated by footballer Juan Mata, Serpentine’s Hans Ulrich Obrist, and filmmaker Josh Willdigg, with Holly Shuttleworth as co-developer, Football City, Art United pairs 11 artists with footballers to explore what the two worlds can learn from each other. The Playmaker stands alongside works by Eric Cantona, Edgar Davids, Ryan Gander, and more, offering new perspectives on how football and art shape culture.

 

The design team’s idea for The Playmaker stems from Boeri’s admiration for Sandro Mazzola, a standout player in Italy’s 1968 European Championship win and the golden era of Inter Milan. Boeri saw Mazzola not simply as a footballer but as a tactician and artist whose play was shaped by vision and instinct. The installation captures this fusion of intellect and motion, inviting visitors to reflect on football as an expressive form shaped by memory, movement, and imagination.

chongqing flagship’s theatrical interiors by liang architecture evoke silk drapery in motion

CURIEL CASA Merges Milanese design with Chongqing’s Geology

 

Positioned at Chongqing’s Liberation Monument Pedestrian Street, the CURIEL CASA Flagship Store marks the Chinese expansion of the century-old Italian fashion house CURIEL. The project, led by Liang Architecture Studio and debuting in midsummer 2024, operates as both a commercial space and a spatial interpretation of the brand’s ethos, merging Italian heritage with the cultural and topographic context of Chongqing’s mountainous landscape. The architectural concept establishes a dialogue between the refined codes of Milanese fashion and the geological narratives embedded in Chongqing’s built environment. Through a careful layering of symbolic references and material articulation, the project translates CURIEL’s philosophy of ‘feminine elegance and empowerment’ into a site-specific spatial framework. The result is an immersive sequence of architectural expressions that align brand identity with localized cultural cues.

 

Drawing upon the performative traditions of Italian opera, particularly the influence of Teatro alla Scala, the spatial layout follows an operatic progression, from overture to crescendo to climax. The entrance, central spiral staircase, exhibition zones, and the concluding salon are composed as sequential stages within a choreographed visitor journey. Architectural elements such as curtain-inspired drapy surfaces, theatrical lighting, and scenographic partitions reinforce this temporal and spatial structure, transforming spatial circulation into a narrative experience. Referencing Milan’s historic streetscapes and architectural vocabulary, the design integrates ornamental restraint with tectonic clarity. A deep understanding of ‘Made in Italy’ craftsmanship, particularly the tactile interplay of surface textures, structural precision, and detail-driven execution, guides the material choices. Within this framework, classical and contemporary elements are brought into balance, while Western and Eastern aesthetics are bridged through material and formal strategies.

Liang Architecture’s CURIEL CASA references Scenographic Spaces

 

From the exterior, the facade introduces the store’s narrative intent. A crimson architectural veil, designed through parametric modeling, forms a pleated surface reminiscent of an opera curtain. Made from anodized aluminum, the facade modulates shadow and reflection throughout the day, acting as both a visual overture and a spatial threshold. Inside, the spiral staircase serves as the structural and symbolic core, its tiered geometry softened by diffused light, evoking silk drapery in motion. The juxtaposition of this kinetic form with the surrounding stone elements sets up a dialogue between movement and mass, impermanence and solidity. Cultural localization continues in the VIP lounge, where parametric reinterpretation of traditional bamboo weaving techniques articulates partitions and wall surfaces. These interventions, constructed through a logic of digital deconstruction and rhythmic sequencing, embed the intangible heritage of Chongqing into the architectural language. As light interacts with the translucent bamboo matrix, the space evokes a calibrated sense of depth and material memory.

 

The design team at Liang Architecture Studio extends scenographic control to the selection of furnishings and environmental elements throughout the project. Referencing the iconography of La Traviata, the CURIEL Salon is designed as an immersive theatrical interior. Furniture arrangements, lighting compositions, and sensory cues, including scent, work together to construct a spatial mise-en-scène where historical narratives are recontextualized within contemporary retail experience. At a conceptual level, the flagship operates as a synthesis of cultural semiotics and spatial narrative. Through material symbolism, spatial sequencing, and local references, the architecture serves as a medium for brand expression and emotional engagement. It reconstructs the relationship between user, space, and identity, using architectural form to translate heritage into contemporary resonance.
