The anticipated Zayed National Museum is set to open in December 2025 in the Saadiyat Cultural District, joining a growing network of landmark institutions such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena, and the upcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. Designed by Foster + Partners, the museum anchors the island with a bold sculpted form that draws deeply from Emirati heritage while incorporating advanced sustainable technologies.

 

The architecture is defined by five steel arching towers that rise above the galleries like falcon wings, a nod to the cultural importance of falconry in the UAE. Beyond this symbolism, each tower functions as a solar thermal chimney, drawing hot air out of the building through natural convection. Below, a landscaped garden traces a timeline of Sheikh Zayed’s life, while the main exhibition spaces are embedded within a gently contoured mound, abstracted from the topography of the Emirates. These six permanent pod-shaped galleries and a temporary exhibition space will present a comprehensive narrative of the UAE’s cultural, environmental, and social history.

Commissioned as a tribute to the UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s new national museum will be split across two levels, supported by a dynamic programme of exhibitions, public events, and research initiatives. Highlights of the collection will include artefacts from the UAE’s earliest human settlements, a rare ancient Magan Boat reconstruction, the Blue Quran manuscript, and the Abu Dhabi Pearl — believed to be one of the world’s oldest natural pearls.

 

The museum builds on Sheikh Zayed’s vision and values to form part of a broader cultural strategy shared by its neighboring institutions on Saadiyat Island, home to one of the world’s densest clusters of cultural venues. Zayed National Museum’s permanent galleries will span archaeology, biodiversity, urban development, and Emirati traditions, drawing connections between local heritage and global narratives to celebrate the region’s identity. The collection also includes major archaeological finds dating back to the Palaeolithic era, including early irrigation systems and traces of Bronze Age copper mining, and these histories are presented alongside contemporary research and public programming, reflecting a commitment to making culture accessible across generations. With dedicated spaces for youth, senior citizens, and People of Determination, the museum seeks to foster inclusive engagement and shared learning.

Industrial Designers Shawna and Matt Heide: The Eameses of Concrete

What plywood was to the Eameses, concrete is to industrial designers Shawna and Matt Heide. The Quebec-based duo, who operate under the name Concrete Cat, harness the material in unexpected ways to create household objects like trays, vessels, bookends, and even mirror frames. Riotous colors, expressive organic forms and the pair’s signature “Oracle pattern”—a sort of cross between tie-dye and marbling—all feature.

Their process is an unusual blend of controlled and uncontrolled elements, starting with the molds that they make. “We design and fabricate our own molds. Molds change over time, they get better as they age. As a mold ages it allows us to produce more complicated colour and pattern work on an object. For this reason we cherish our molds and treat them with respect, we repair them, every mold is precious. We refine our molds with subtle changes over time. This is the first reason every object is a little bit different from its family.”

During casting, they vibrate the molds (by hand) in order to minimize air bubbles. That said, some will inevitably survive, and the duo deal with them on a case-by-case basis, deciding whether to remedy or accentuate.

“Concrete has air entrained withins its matrix, this is part of its nature. Sometimes this air manifests as surface voids. Most voids add character, a fingerprint unique to each piece. We fill surface voids that we deem might limit a piece’s intended functionality. We fill voids if we don’t agree with their character. Sometimes we fill voids in accenting colours to accentuate their beauty. We embrace voids.”

The pair have had a number of clients over the years, ranging from boutique hotels to architecture firms to retail chains. One particularly notable project was their collaboration with Seth Rogen’s Houseplant brand, which yielded the following weed accessories:

“Concrete Cat’s process to call forth the Oracle pattern is a violent ceremony of chaos. We work blindly in trust. The destructive nature of trying to put a harness on chaos leaves a unique mark on every single thing we make.”

Bring the Wicked universe to your shelf with LEGO’s Glinda & Elphaba Bookends

Wicked Part Two, or officially, Wicked: For Good, is still a few months away, but it’s never too early to jump on the green (and pink) hype. Before the full promotional train for the movie goes underway, there is still a lot of merch and content for the hit musical and now movie property to tide you over. And if you’re a LEGO fan, or a bookworm, or a huge Wicked fan, or all of the above, then this latest release would be right up your alley.

LEGO has released Glinda & Elphaba Bookends to let you relive all your memories of visiting the Wicked universe, whether it’s through the books, the musical, or the movie adaptation released last year. These bookends can be used as actual tools to keep your books upright on your cabinet or shelf, but they can also be used as wickedly decorative accessories for your space.

If you’re Team Green, the Elphaba-themed bookend has all the things associated with our misunderstood “wicked” witch. This includes a model of the Emerald City and the train leading to it, a green elixir bottle, a blue flower, and of course, the Grimmerie with secret compartments for the Wizard and Fiyero figures. Now, if you’re Team Pink, there’s also much to love about the Glinda-themed book nook, which, of course, is very pink. There is the Shiz University model and a huge butterfly on top of a book stack. It also contains a compartment for the Madame Morrible and Pfannee figures.

The set includes six minifigures, with Glinda and Elphaba front and center on their respective sides and the aforementioned four characters hidden in the compartments. All of them are in their signature outfits and accessories and can also be displayed apart from the bookends. Each bookend has hidden Easter eggs as well, which fans will enjoy discovering in this 1,327-piece build. There is a building instruction booklet included, and you can enjoy every step of this build with the LEGO Builder app. Each side of the bookend measures eight inches high and 4.5 inches deep.

Most Wicked fans are really engrossed in the details of this world, so they will definitely have fun setting up these bookends. The accessories and design details are inspired by the film adaptation, but since it’s mostly pretty loyal (so far) to the musical it’s based on anyway, you’ll still definitely enjoy having this on your shelf whether you’re a fan of the movie or not. Kinetic Interactive Radius Light Lets You Shape Your Own Ambience

There’s something oddly satisfying about a light fixture that actually responds to your touch, and Michael Jantzen’s Interactive Radius Light nails that feeling perfectly. This isn’t one of those overly complicated smart lights that require three apps and a PhD to operate. Instead, it’s a beautifully simple kinetic sculpture that lets you physically rotate curved panels around a central light source, creating different lighting effects with every movement you make.

The Santa Fe designer has a knack for creating objects that make you want to reach out and interact with them. You might remember his House Sitter Chair that lets you rest inside a tiny house while you sit, or that space-time continuum lamp that plays with perception. With the Interactive Radius Light, Jantzen continues doing what he does best, turning everyday objects into something surprisingly engaging and genuinely fun to use.

The whole thing is refreshingly straightforward in how it works. Four curved panels nest inside each other, rotating around a central column that houses an energy-efficient bulb inside a translucent cylinder. The structure measures 14 inches across and 18 inches tall, so it’s perfectly sized for most tables or shelves without taking over your entire space. Each panel pivots independently, which means you can create countless different configurations just by pushing them around.

What’s really clever about this design is how the panels interact with the light source. When they’re closed up, they form this broken cylinder that mostly hides the central bulb, letting only slivers of light peek through the gaps. Start rotating different panels in various directions, and suddenly you’re controlling both the intensity and quality of the light in ways that feel surprisingly intuitive. It’s like having a dimmer switch that also changes the shape of your lighting fixture.

The experience of using it feels almost meditative. You find yourself experimenting with different panel positions, discovering new combinations that cast interesting shadows or create focused beams of light. Unlike most lighting adjustments that feel like chores, this one becomes something you actually want to mess around with. The physical feedback is immediate and satisfying, especially compared to fumbling with smartphone apps or complicated control panels.

Beyond just being fun to use, the Interactive Radius Light actually transforms how lighting works in your space. The fixture itself becomes a dynamic sculptural element that changes appearance as you adjust it. Whether you want dramatic accent lighting for movie night or bright, even illumination for reading, the same device adapts to whatever mood you’re going for through simple physical manipulation.

Retrofit building absorbs energy from the sun

 

A series of colorful solar facades and photovoltaic murals give the SunRise tower in Alberta, Canada, renewable energy. Once an aging, 12-story residential building, the retrofit by Mitrex with murals by indigenous artist Lance Cardinal can help reduce carbon emissions by using the building-integrated photovoltaics. These are solar panels that don’t look like the regular ones with a bluish tint. Instead, they resemble tiles or panels, with the energy-absorbing technology hiding underneath them. 

 

The building-integrated solar facades and photovoltaic murals in Alberta, Canada, work as the sunlight hits the surface of the panels. During the retrofit, the company made sure that the system was large enough to meet the energy goals of the project, so they improved the original plan, which was only for a 60 kW system, and increased it to 267 kW. That big jump can help the building exceed the 50 percent carbon reduction target.

The murals are found on the northern wall of the building, standing tall at 85 feet, by the Edmonton-based Indigenous artist Lance Cardinal. These photovoltaic murals next to the solar facades in Alberta, Canada, are a tribute to First Nations and Chinese cultures, which are part of the history of the area. It is dubbed the world’s largest BIPV mural, and at the time of publishing, it is being officially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records. The system is not painted but built directly into the solar panel system. 

 

Mitrex and the building team, including the architect MBC Group and the contractor Chandos Development, worked carefully to make sure the project would be realized. Before the renovation, the energy company studied the aging building’s needs, created energy models, tested panel colors, and planned a rainscreen system to keep the building safe from different weather conditions. In the end, Mitrex’s solar facades and photovoltaic murals were installed on all four sides of the building in Alberta, Canada (the murals being on the northern wall). The total system is 267 kilowatts, enough to create around 180,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy per year, and it is equal to the amount of power used by 23 homes in one year.
