porsche 911 carrera 2.7rs becomes a Rolling Tapestry of Color

 

In Los Angeles, designer Sean Wotherspoon has reimagined a Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7RS, working closely with a small team of collaborators to refinish and reupholster every visible surface. The car comes from the garage of collector and commissioner Philip Sarofim, and has since been transformed over the course of eight months into an expression of Wotherspoon’s longtime connection with car culture and playful colorways.

 

A new platform for Wotherspoon’s distinctive design vocabulary, the 2.7RS was brought to life with the help of the creative agency Stuff by Spot and product designer Duncan Bonar. The base car is a favorite model in Porsche’s legacy and offered both opportunity and risk, which the designer acknowledged in an interview with the Porsche-centric storytelling platform Type 7: ‘I was a little apprehensive at first because the value of these cars,’ he explained, ‘but honored at the same time.’

Sean wotherspoon’s signature Color-Blocking

 

The attention-grabbing color palette of the redesigned Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7RS echoes Sean Wotherspoon’s previous projects, especially his Taycan collaboration from 2022 (see here). It also references Philip Sarofim’s role at Meyers Manx with colors like ‘Old Red,’ originally developed for the dune buggy company. Though the project isn’t a formal Manx collaboration, this use of its heritage hues allows for an intentional blurring of automotive identities. The hood alone acts as an historic nod and connects Porsche’s racing heritage to the whimsical lineage of Manx fiberglass bodies.

 

Each panel is individually painted, matching the precision of Wotherspoon’s past work while embracing the character of older materials. The approach recalls the patchwork identity of his Harlequin Golf, which he credits as a foundational influence: ‘I want everything to be color blocked,‘ he tells Type 7. The inspiration carries through the Carrera’s bodywork in subtle variations, with even the tones being selected to match the character of the original RS silhouette.

Inside, the car takes on a different texture entirely. Wotherspoon layers the cabin with vintage Levi’s denim, corduroy, and flannel, fabrics sourced from garments dating back to the 1960s. ‘It’s all made with vintage Levi’s denim and flannel shirts,’ he continues. ‘I also used some corduroy in there because it’s one of my favorite materials, and the cork dashboard is also really special. The cork was leftover from the Taycan project, so it has a little bit of modern Porsche running through it.’

 

The materials are not selected just for novelty, but for meaning. The denim used on the driver’s seat, for example, was chosen for its distinctive wear pattern. Levi’s pockets on the door cards, while sideways, are fully functional. The front trunk is covered in a patchwork lining, extending the interior logic of reuse and repair. ‘You couldn’t find a flaw if you tried,’ Wotherspoon says of the upholstery work. ‘Every stitch is perfect.

Wotherspoon traces his fascination with color-blocking back to late nights on VW Vortex forums as a teenager. The discovery of the rare and colorful Volkswagen Harlequin, and eventually owning one, seeded an aesthetic that has carried through to his work with Nike, Adidas, and now Porsche. With this latest project, the hybridization of automotive heritage and vintage streetwear finds a more tactile form.

 

The car debuted on the streets of Los Angeles. ‘It’s really something to drive that car around LA on a summer’s day,’ the designer recalls. ‘Nature is always creating so much color and we always look at it as beauty… so I tried to bring that into the project.’

 

Although the project is informed by Porsche history, its spirit is about reinterpretation rather than preservation. Personal references and unexpected material stories are layered into the design. ‘My goal is to always use as much color as I can,’ he explains, ‘but use it in a way that’s done so well that it doesn’t hurt your eyes. You know, a way that makes you curious.’

New LED dome lights up the Prague Planetarium interior

 

Czech architectural studio collcoll introduces unique LED technology, transforming the Prague Planetarium into a large illuminating dome. The Prague Planetarium has undergone a major modernization that goes far beyond just replacing its projection equipment. The renovation of the protected building, designed by architect Jaroslav Frágner in the 1950s, was complex. It required removing layers of interventions from recent decades to make way for the installation of revolutionary LED projection technology. The largest LED screen of its kind in the world. At the heart of the project is a new hemispherical screen from the American company COSM, 22 meters in diameter, with an incredible 45 million pixels. Visitors can experience an immersive spatial illusion with extraordinary color depth and realism.

collcoll redesigns the auditorium for immersive viewing

 

The central Zeiss Jena projector was moved outside the main hall by agreement with heritage conservators, freeing space for a new auditorium design. Architects from collcoll studio designed a stepped geometric layout that visually lifts the audience above the horizon. Capacity increased by 20% to 277 seats, with a spatial arrangement supporting comfortable and safe movement. The seats were custom-designed with a Czech manufacturer, and they are now adjustable, ergonomic, and comfortable enough to keep visitors attentive. Acoustic treatment hidden behind the projection dome further enhances the illusion of infinite space.

 

The installation of new technology required new energy and technical facilities, integrated into the building with maximum respect for its protected structures. Cooling and heat recovery were designed considering the planetarium’s location in the heart of Stromovka Park. Heat from the screen is stored in six deep wells (each 200 m deep) in summer and used to heat the building in winter. The dome itself has a thermal output comparable to three family houses, so the heat is reused within the building.

Historical preservation merges with future-forward design

 

The renovation also affected the foyer and facilities. The original exhibition at the entrance was replaced by a circular LED screen serving as an additional presentation surface. A newly designed cloakroom separates incoming and outgoing visitor flows, increasing comfort. Over the summer of 2025, a new simulator exhibition in the basement is set to open, along with a shop at the new exit, after completing outdoor landscaping. An inappropriately placed ramp will be removed from the adjacent rosarium, simplifying barrier-free access through the shop. This modernization positions the Prague Planetarium as a world leader in immersive education and culture with its unique LED dome technology, offering visitors an unprecedented visual experience of the cosmos.

IKEA’s new stylish, eco-friendly Bluetooth speakers will have Spotify Tap

IKEA continues to innovate in the realm of affordable home technology with the introduction of its newest Bluetooth speakers, the NATTBAD and BLOMPRAKT. These speakers perfectly capture IKEA’s mission to blend smart technology with stylish, accessible design, making them ideal for anyone seeking both great sound and a home-friendly aesthetic.

The NATTBAD and BLOMPRAKT both embrace IKEA’s hallmark Scandinavian simplicity. The NATTBAD features soft, rounded edges and a matte finish, available in neutral hues like white and light grey, ensuring it complements most interiors. This 2,000-brick LEGO Hamilton Musical set features all the characters and even a rotating stage

“I’m not throwing away my shot!” at covering what might be the most impressive LEGO Ideas submission I’ve seen this year. A fan designer has meticulously recreated Lin-Manuel Miranda’s revolutionary musical in brick form, capturing the essence of the Richard Rodgers Theatre stage where Hamilton has been blowing audiences away since 2015. The set manages to pack the entire American Revolution into a display-worthy model that would make even King George III grudgingly impressed.

The attention to historical and theatrical detail is stunning. From the dual staircases flanking the stage to the iconic rotating floor (which appears to actually turn in the model), this creation nails the spatial dynamics that director Thomas Kail used to bring America’s founding to life. The designer didn’t skip on the upper mezzanine either, complete with the golden rope rings used throughout the show’s choreography. Every architectural element serves both form and function, making this a display piece that tells a story, much like the cabinet rap battles themselves.

The minifigure selection reads like a playbill from opening night. Alexander Hamilton stands center stage in his revolutionary green coat, while the Schuyler sisters watch from the balcony in their period-appropriate pastel dresses. Aaron Burr lurks nearby (the man is non-stop), and King George III appears in his regal red regalia, looking ready to remind the colonies “You’ll Be Back.” Each character’s costume has been thoughtfully adapted to the minifigure format while maintaining recognizable traits from their Broadway counterparts.

The designer used 2000 pieces based on similar-sized LEGO Ideas sets, with clever part usage like the spotlights constructed from Technic elements and the smooth reddish-brown tiles creating the wooden stage floor. The curved front base with the gold Hamilton star logo adds a theatrical flair that elevates this from mere model to display-worthy collectible. Small accessories like quills, papers, and even what appears to be the Reynolds Pamphlet add storytelling possibilities for fans who want to recreate specific scenes.

LEGO builder MadamGalacticRetox created this MOC (My Own Creation) out of her sheer love of the musical, wanting to own a relic of it in brick form. The staggering 2000-brick set allows you to recreate the entire musical in full detail, revisiting every single song and moment. The set features most of the characters, from Hamilton himself (or rather, Lin-Manuel as Hamilton) to Aaron Burr, Washington, Jefferson (who also plays Marquis de Lafayette), King George III, Hercules Mulligan (also James Madison), John Lawrence (also Philip Hamilton), and the three Schuyler sisters – Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy.

For theater geeks and AFOL (Adult Fans of LEGO) alike, this set hits all the right notes. The exploded view shows additional furniture pieces for scene changes, suggesting you could recreate everything from “The Room Where It Happens” to the heart-wrenching “It’s Quiet Uptown.” The build perfectly balances theatrical accuracy with the charm of LEGO’s aesthetic. This set needs 10,000 supporter votes on LEGO Ideas to be considered for production, and like Hamilton himself, it’s clearly not throwing away its shot at brick immortality. The world was wide enough for Hamilton and Burr, and my display shelf is definitely wide enough for this masterpiece of LEGO theater.

The usual schtick with LEGO Ideas builds is for me to tell you to go vote for the fan-made creation online, but this is one rare instance where the MOC’s already crossed the 10k vote threshold, which means it’s now awaiting review from LEGO’s internal team… and if all goes well, you could potentially see a dedicated LEGO Hamilton box set on the store shelf near you! LEGO, do NOT throw away your shot!

This off-grid retreat is defined by its compact footprint and a striking, three-level design that feels at once inventive and deeply aligned with its Pacific Northwest surroundings. Every aspect of The Nest, from materials to spatial arrangement, is shaped by a commitment to low-impact, sustainable living—a philosophy that resonates through each thoughtfully curated detail.

The exterior of The Nest presents an architectural puzzle—two geometric forms rotated and interlocked, yielding a compact volume that maximizes usable space without overwhelming the landscape. The structure’s small footprint belies its interior complexity. Rather than expanding outward, the design grows vertically, creating three distinct levels that allow for the separation of function and a sense of privacy in a modestly sized envelope. In a world where square footage is often equated with comfort, The Nest shows us that intelligent design can deliver both spaciousness and intimacy in a smaller package.

As you enter the retreat, it unfolds as a series of purposeful zones, each attuned to the rhythms of daily life and reflection. Living and resting areas are arranged to make the most of the vertical layout, with elevated platforms serving as sleeping nooks and lower levels dedicated to gathering or quiet contemplation. Windows are placed for light, but also for framing the shifting moods of forest and coastline.

Furniture and fixtures in The Nest follow a minimalist, functional ethos. Space-saving solutions and integrated storage allow the interior to feel uncluttered, even as it supports the practical needs of off-grid living. The use of prefabricated construction techniques ensures precision and quality while also enabling the structure to be assembled swiftly in a remote location. This design decision minimizes site disturbance and shortens the building timeline, both important factors in maintaining the ecological integrity of the site.

The materials selected to build the retreat have been chosen for their low environmental impact, and the overall design minimizes the retreat’s footprint, both literally and figuratively. The Nest is more than just a place to stay; it’s an invitation to reconnect with nature, to reflect, and to restore. It integrates seamlessly with its environment, thereby blurring the line between shelter and setting, and amplifying the restorative potential of both.

Daria Sheina Studio’s vision for The Nest is rooted in nurturing well-being and supporting a lifestyle of intention. The project is as much about the experience of being as it is about the act of building. It asks: What does it mean to truly inhabit a space, and how can architecture foster moments of renewal? Sustainable Living: The 5 Latest Trends in Recycled Paper Products and Eco-Friendly Design

Paper is one of the most commonly used materials worldwide, but its production comes at a high environmental cost. Recycling and repurposing paper play a key role in reducing this impact. According to a report, the average paper recycling rate in the USA ranged between 65% and 69%, with approximately 46 million tons, or about 126,000 tons per day, being recycled.

By recycling paper and integrating these methods into our routines, we safeguard important natural resources and foster a cleaner, more sustainable world. The benefits of recycling go beyond waste reduction—it directly addresses some of the most pressing environmental concerns. For instance:

1. Reduces Deforestation

Recycling paper reduces the demand for fresh wood pulp, helping preserve forests and their carbon-absorbing capacity. One ton of recycled paper can save around 17 trees, making it a key contributor to healthier ecosystems. By diverting paper waste from landfills and reintroducing it into production, recycling conserves natural resources and lowers reliance on virgin materials.

Producing paper from recycled fibers also uses significantly less energy and water by skipping energy-intensive steps like harvesting, pulping, and bleaching. This not only reduces industrial water usage but also limits the environmental impact.

Short Story is a 2.4m x 2.4m desert structure in Spring Valley, Nevada, designed to explore sustainable architecture through Raumplan principles and built by Roundhouse, a curatorial platform investigating urban change. The project uses recycled paper as a key material, both as wall insulation and exterior render, demonstrating its versatility and low environmental impact. Constructed in under three weeks using low-impact methods, the building aligns with the Territorial Revival style of its surroundings while showcasing modern sustainability practices.

Clad in recycled paper mixed with adobe, the exterior features a unique gradient—light sandstone hues at the base transitioning to deep rust tones near the top, shaped by the varying application of the material. Inside, the structure is framed in whitewashed, latticed wood and organized into multi-level spaces accessed by a rustic log staircase. Short Story proves how recycled paper can be reimagined as a functional, beautiful building material in contemporary design.

2. Conserves Energy and Water

Recycling paper is an efficient and sustainable alternative to producing paper from raw wood. It uses approximately 70% less energy and water, while also extending the life of paper fibers. One ton of recycled paper can save up to 7,000 gallons of water and enough energy to power an average home for six months. Moreover, the process generates 73% less air pollution, making it significantly more environmentally friendly.

By encouraging paper recycling, we reduce the strain on natural resources and promote cleaner production methods. Every recycled sheet contributes to minimizing waste and building a more sustainable, eco-conscious future.

The Frugal Bottle is a sustainable innovation designed to reduce the environmental impact of wine packaging by using recyclable paper. Unlike traditional glass bottles, it is made from 94% recycled paperboard with an internal polyethylene pouch to hold the liquid. While shaped like a standard 750 mL wine bottle, it dramatically lowers carbon emissions, offering a footprint six times smaller than glass. The outer paper shell also allows for 360-degree branding, giving wine producers a fully customizable and eco-friendly alternative.

What sets this packaging apart is its recyclability and ease of disposal. After finishing the wine, users can simply press a marked spot on the bottle’s shoulder to split the seam, separating the pouch from the paperboard for proper recycling. It’s also five times lighter than glass, making it cheaper and more efficient to transport. The Frugal Bottle proves that recyclable paper can be a viable, stylish, and responsible choice for wine packaging.

3. Minimizes Pollution

Recycling paper is a powerful way to reduce environmental pollution. It cuts air pollution by 73% and water pollution by 35%, making it a valuable tool in the fight against climate change. Additionally, recycling prevents paper waste from ending up in landfills, where it would otherwise decompose and release harmful methane gas, a major contributor to global warming.

By choosing recycled paper, we help protect ecosystems, conserve natural resources, and reduce our overall ecological footprint. These small, everyday choices support a cleaner environment and encourage more sustainable living, making a lasting impact on the planet’s health and future.

Designers are now embracing cardboard as a sustainable alternative. Lightweight, recyclable, and biodegradable, cardboard furniture leaves a minimal carbon footprint and is easy to transport and assemble. From sturdy chairs to multi-functional pet beds, this eco-friendly material proves its versatility while supporting a more conscious design approach.

A notable example of its potential was seen during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where the athletes’ village featured beds made from low-carbon, high-strength cardboard. These beds supported up to 200 kg and reflected Japan’s commitment to sustainability, from medals made of recycled metals to torches built from repurposed materials. This initiative showed that cardboard can meet functional demands while aligning with global efforts to reduce environmental impact. As awareness grows, cardboard is emerging as a smart, responsible material choice for modern furniture.

4. Decreases Landfill Waste

Recycling paper plays a crucial role in reducing landfill waste and promoting more sustainable waste management. Paper accounts for about 28% of landfill content and can take up to 15 years to decompose. During this slow breakdown, it often releases methane gas, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change and poses safety risks due to its flammability.

By recycling paper, we conserve valuable landfill space and significantly reduce methane emissions. It also delays the need for new landfill sites, lowering the environmental impact of waste disposal. Embracing paper recycling is a practical step toward cleaner, more responsible waste management.

Vadim Kibardin reimagines traditional furniture by using recycled paper as his primary medium, challenging conventional reliance on wood, metal, or plastic. Each handcrafted piece is uniquely shaped without the use of moulds, reflecting over 5,000 hours of meticulous craftsmanship. For more than 25 years, Kibardin has embraced sustainability, recycling over 2,000 pounds of cardboard, equivalent to saving 17 trees and preventing around 250 pounds of CO₂ emissions annually. His commitment to eco-conscious design transforms a seemingly fragile material into structurally sound and artistically refined furniture.

Offering a sophisticated alternative to bamboo or cork-based furniture, Kibardin’s work features collections like the Totem and Black series, admired for their sculptural form and functionality. His designs, housed in galleries, museums, and private collections, prove that recycled paper can be both durable and luxurious.

5. Economic Benefits

Recycling paper significantly contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing the demand for raw materials, conserving energy and water, and lowering production costs. It also plays a key role in climate action by preventing methane emissions from paper waste in landfills and cutting down on the energy-intensive processes involved in producing paper from virgin sources.

Moreover, recycling supports a circular economy by keeping materials in continuous use, reducing waste, and promoting responsible consumption. At 69 Rue des Saints-Pères on Paris’s Left Bank, architect and creative director Onur Kece of The Refreshment Club introduces the flagship store of contemporary porcelain house Saints Pères, conceiving the showroom as a space of transformation. The 160-square-meter interior operates as a laboratory that immerses visitors in the slow, sensory rituals that shape it.

 

The spatial concept draws directly from the raw materials and techniques of porcelain-making. Red brick walls and counters, stacked dry without mortar, evoke the interiors of traditional kilns while also recalling industrial pallet systems, with their rhythmic repetition. A full-ceiling lightbox filters ambient illumination across the space, simulating the clear, even light of a sunlit day that softens edges, warms textures, and heightens the tactile character of each surface. At the far end, a long poured-concrete counter anchors an open workshop, where making becomes a visible and ongoing act.

Saints Pères centers rituals in landscape of stone and clay

 

The spatial narrative unfolds in geological time. Opposite the entrance, a rough stone wall mimics the layered strata of clay quarries, grounding the boutique in the earthbound origins of its core material. This sense of grounding is enhanced by raw walls that breathe, edges that remain imperfect, and transitions that are felt more than marked. Movement through the space is uninterrupted and intuitive, every threshold is porous, and every boundary is blurred.

 

Paris-based architect Onur Kece, founder of The Refreshment Club creative agency, structures the boutique around three active zones that reinterpret the art de la table through contemporary gestures. An olive oil bar presents some of the rarest extra virgin varieties from around the world, inviting tasting as a sensory act. A custom coffee bar offers curated blends roasted in-house, while a modular zone hosts chef-led dinners, tastings, and artist collaborations, transforming the Saints Pères boutique into a site of hospitality and experimentation.

 

Saints Pères, as a brand, proposes porcelain as a medium through which attention, care, and sensorial presence are practiced daily. In this context, the store is an instrument of that philosophy, with Kece’s design inviting visitors to slow down, to observe, to touch, and to taste.

Rocco expands CUHK Art Museum with New Annex

 

Rocco Design Architects Associates has completed the new annex for the Art Museum at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), expanding the museum’s spatial and cultural reach through a design grounded in contextual sensitivity and structural clarity. The annex establishes a direct connection to the existing museum, aligning with CUHK’s institutional mission to promote Chinese art and cultural education. The design concept, based on the theme ‘Upon Heritage Stems New Marvels,’ is reflected in both architectural form and spatial organization. The new structure evolves from the existing building and projects outward, forming a cantilevered mass that extends 12 meters above the sloped terrain. This cantilever addresses both aesthetic and functional concerns, referencing geological forms while creating uninterrupted space below to preserve existing trees and topography.

 

The massing of the annex is informed by landscape imagery found in traditional Chinese painting, particularly the works ‘Shanshui in Four Screens’ by Chang Dai-chien and ‘Echoing with Distant Horses’ by Dai Jin. The building’s positioning and elevation facilitate continuity between the new and existing galleries while allowing the landscape to remain integral to the visitor experience. The raised main exhibition hall enables clear circulation and improved spatial flow across the museum complex.

Museum Extension is Rooted in Landscape and Heritage

 

The design team at Rocco Design Architects Associates further enhances circulation by adding a new stairway running alongside the annex, creating a direct link between University Avenue and the University Mall. This route introduces a layered spatial sequence: from open landscape through semi-public spaces to the enclosed gallery interiors. Visitors pass through a progression that includes a multi-purpose hall, stairway, and viewing platforms, before arriving at the museum’s core exhibition spaces. The annex’s structure includes a V-shaped column that supports the cantilevered gallery and acts as a visual and symbolic anchor. The V-form references the concept of “承” (support or continuation) in Chinese culture, interpreted here as both structural necessity and cultural transmission. The structural motif also alludes to the legacy of Dr. Lo Kwee-seong, donor and founder of the Vitasoy brand, whose name is embedded in the museum’s history.

 

The building’s facade design adapts traditional Chinese ink painting techniques into a contemporary architectural language. Drawing inspiration from ‘cunfa,’ or textured brushstrokes used to depict depth and materiality in landscape painting, the exterior uses fair-faced concrete with custom formwork. Variations in depth and surface articulation echo the layered textures of rocks, water, and trees found in classical artworks. The 1,770-square-meter facility includes the Harold and Christina Lee Gallery for special exhibitions, a café (Ideaology), a bookstore, an artist studio, a mounting studio, and a rooftop area offering views of the surrounding campus and natural landscape.

FOODres.AI transforms food waste into functional objects

 

FOODres.AI is a desktop 3D printer developed by MIT graduates Biru Cao and Yiqing Wang that converts household food waste into functional objects using artificial intelligence. Integrating object recognition, material processing, and additive manufacturing, the system offers an alternative approach to domestic waste management through small-scale, circular design. The printer is equipped with a custom three-axis extrusion system and an automated material processing module. Kitchen scraps are processed into a printable bioplastic paste using a built-in heating and mixing mechanism. The material is then extruded into preselected forms such as coasters, containers, and simple decorative items.

 

A mobile application supports the system’s operation. It includes a self-trained object detection model that identifies types of food waste using the phone’s camera. Based on the detected material, the app suggests suitable ‘print recipes’ that account for the physical properties of the waste. The app also provides a library of design templates, and users have the option to upload custom models. The interface is designed for intuitive use, requiring minimal prior experience with 3D printing.

FOODres.AI, developed by designers Biru Cao and Yiqing Wang, originated as part of MIT’s IDEAS social innovation program and has since received continued institutional support. It was recognized with the iF Design Award (2025) and the Platinum A’ Design Award (2024–2025). The project situates itself within broader efforts to reduce food waste, an issue that accounts for up to 50 percent of household organic refuse in the United States.

 

Rather than diverting food waste exclusively to compost or landfill, the system enables localized material reuse through additive manufacturing. Its compact format allows for potential integration in domestic, educational, or small-scale workshop environments. The design emphasizes automation, modularity, and user accessibility, aligning with emerging practices in distributed production and sustainability. FOODres.AI proposes a material cycle in which organic waste can be repurposed into durable forms. The system supports experimentation and modular output while reinforcing behavioral change through direct interaction with waste transformation processes.
