We’ve all seen fancy chessboards before, so perhaps it was just a matter of time before “luxury” bled over into other board games. If you’ve run out of things to spend money on, L’OBJET and Fortuny are two luxury brands that have collaborated on the following object sets with murky material descriptions.

This $850 Deco Tic Tac Toe set is made out of “natural shells” (they don’t mention what kind) and brass.

This $1,600 Matis Backgammon Set is made out of “inlaid natural wood”—which means what, veneer?—and suede.

Then there’s this $4,200 Haas Chess Set, made of “black and white stone”—again, that’s as specific as they get—with, if you can believe it, “individually sculpted brass pieces.”

If all these are a bit out of your tax bracket, don’t worry—they also sell plain ol’ playing cards. In a porcelain box rimmed with 24-karat gold and wrapped in crocodile skin that may or may not be real. Just $295, but hey, it does come with two decks.

At Zion Canyon, a New Hot Springs Resort

When you think of hot springs, you probably picture Iceland or Japan. What you may not know is that hot springs resorts also exist in America, from Arkansas to Colorado to Virginia. Now there’s a new one, with a killer location: Zion Canyon Hot Springs, located just 20 minutes outside of the famous park.

Designed by Arkansas-based architecture firm HFA Architecture + Engineering, the facility boasts over 50 bodies of water: In addition to freshwater pools and multiple cold plunges, it has 32 natural geothermal hot springs, and a further 16 “globally inspired” mineral pools whose mineral content has been tinkered with to replicate the conditions of famous hot springs: Iceland’s Blue Lagoon, the salt-rich Dead Sea, a Hokkaido onsen, et cetera.

All of the water is drawn from natural underground hot springs located along the nearby Virgin River. Naturally heated, this water contains magnesium, potassium, sodium, calcium, iron, sulfate, chloride and silica. In addition to the relaxation and pain relief effects provided by the mere temperature of the water—which ranges from 80°F to 104°F—the minerals are said to improve circulation, organ health, nerve and muscle function, and even the quality of your skin, hair and nails.

In addition to the pools, there are firepit rest areas, a café, and barrel-shaped saunas.

The facility opens today, and entry prices start at $29. (Locals—residents of Washington County—will be pleased to see they get a 20% discount.)

Commodore 64 Ultimate Returns in Style with Glowing and Gold Editions

The Commodore 64 was one of those computers that defined an entire generation’s relationship with technology, complete with its chunky beige case and that satisfying mechanical keyboard that made every keystroke feel deliberate. These days, most of our computing happens on sleek, minimalist devices that prioritize function over personality, which makes the new Commodore 64 Ultimate series feel like a breath of fresh air.

What makes this modern revival particularly interesting is how it doesn’t just slap some retro styling onto contemporary hardware and call it a day. Instead, the Ultimate series comes in three distinct flavors, each designed to appeal to different types of nostalgia seekers while actually being useful computers you can plug into your modern setup.

Designer: Commodore

The BASIC Beige edition is probably what most people picture when they think of a faithful C64 recreation. It sports that familiar cream-colored plastic case that screams 1980s home computing, complete with a proper mechanical keyboard that delivers the same tactile satisfaction as the original. Of course, underneath that nostalgic exterior, you’ll find modern conveniences like HDMI output and USB ports, so you won’t have to hunt down vintage monitors or deal with finicky RF connections.

Then there’s the Starlight Edition, which takes the retro concept in a completely different direction. This version features a translucent case packed with sound-reactive LEDs that pulse and change colors based on whatever game or music you’re playing. The effect is pretty spectacular, especially when you consider they’ve also created the world’s first translucent mechanical keyboard PCB, allowing the internal lighting to shine through each key as you type.

The real showstopper, however, is the Founders Edition, which is limited to just 6,400 units. This golden beauty takes inspiration from the legendary millionth C64 that Commodore produced back in the day, featuring a translucent amber case that gives off a warm, premium glow. The attention to detail here is impressive, with 24k gold-plated badges, satin gold keycaps, and a comprehensive collector’s package that includes everything from a commemorative certificate to an exclusive t-shirt and even a gold dog tag necklace.

All three editions share the same modernized guts, which means you get contemporary features like SD card slots for easy game loading, Ethernet connectivity, and compatibility with both vintage peripherals and modern accessories. The mechanical keyboards across all versions aren’t just for show either, they’re fully functional and maintain compatibility with original C64 software, so these aren’t just expensive display pieces gathering dust on your shelf.

What’s particularly clever about this approach is how it taps into the growing trend of technostalgia without falling into the trap of being purely decorative. Sure, these computers look fantastic sitting on your desk, but they’re also genuinely useful for anyone interested in retro computing, programming, or just experiencing what home computing felt like before everything moved to touchscreens and cloud services.

That said, you’ll need to be prepared for some compromises. The limited production runs mean these won’t be cheap, and the Founders Edition in particular is clearly aimed at serious collectors rather than casual users. The translucent cases and LED lighting, while visually striking, might not appeal to everyone’s aesthetic preferences either.

The Commodore 64 Ultimate series succeeds because it understands that good retro design isn’t just about copying old aesthetics. Instead, it takes the best parts of the original experience, the tactile keyboard, the distinctive case design, the immediate boot-up satisfaction, and combines them with modern reliability and connectivity. The result is something that feels both familiar and fresh, proving that sometimes the best way forward is to take a thoughtful look backward.

interlinked garden rooms stretch beneath single roof in tamada & wakimoto’s japanese house

tamada & wakimoto arranges residence around gardens

 

In the rural outskirts of Tochigi, Japan, on a former farmstead surrounded by rice fields and small factories, Tamada & Wakimoto completes Roof House, a gently scattered residence designed to stretch daily life into the garden. The project sits on a 2,000-square-meter plot once occupied by a large farmhouse and framed by hardwood trees. For a young client relocating from the city, the architects were asked to create a place to live, work, and connect with others while keeping the house adaptable for the future.

 

The team breaks the house down into several compact buildings and arranges them around semi-outdoor courtyards. These in-between spaces, what they call ‘earthen floor’ gardens, are loosely held together under one thin, extended roof, resulting in a relaxed, low-slung architecture that lets people move between rooms and outdoor spaces, letting the landscape, weather, and local rhythms shape how the house is used each day.

Each side of the Roof House has a different feel. Japanese architects Tamada & Wakimoto open the main garden toward the trees and include an outdoor kitchen for cooking and gathering, especially in spring when the cherry blossoms bloom. Near the entrance, a shaded area under the eaves becomes a space to sit, talk, or greet visitors. To the north, a walled garden offers room for weekend carpentry or working on the car, chores that are part of the rural setting.

 

Designed with change in mind, Roof House can be reconfigured over time. The private part of the house, the one housing the bedroom and bath, can remain a vacation home, while other areas could serve as a small shop or gallery.

3D printer with AI can turn food scraps into useful items

There have been numerous studies conducted and articles written on how much food is wasted every day in the U.S. alone. Creative thinkers are developing innovative ways to prevent this waste from ending up in landfills, going beyond traditional methods like composting, reusing, or turning scraps into animal feed. It would also be great if the solutions they develop could be useful in our everyday lives.

Now imagine turning your banana peels, coffee grounds, and vegetable scraps into useful household items instead of throwing them away. That’s exactly what MIT graduates Yiqing Wang and Biru Cao have made possible with their groundbreaking invention, the Foodres.AI 3D printer. This innovative desktop device represents a completely new approach to dealing with food waste by transforming organic waste into functional objects.

The technology works through a combination of artificial intelligence and 3D printing. Users simply place their food waste into the machine, and the accompanying mobile app uses AI to analyze the materials through the phone’s camera. The system uses a self-trained object detection model to identify food types and assess their printability, then suggests appropriate “print recipes” based on the physical properties of your waste materials. The printer can create a wide variety of useful items from your kitchen scraps. Users can print cup holders, coasters, decorative items, and custom designs by simply dropping in food waste and selecting the desired form and size. The built-in material processing module helps users mix waste with natural additives to form a printable bioplastic paste, making the entire process seamless and accessible.

What makes this printer particularly user-friendly is its intuitive design that requires no prior 3D printing experience. The app provides a library of design templates, and users can also upload their own custom models. Once you’ve selected your desired object and size, the printer’s custom three-axis extrusion system converts your scraps into something useful. The environmental impact potential is significant, as food waste accounts for up to 50 percent of household organic refuse in the United States. The project began as part of research supported by the MIT IDEAS program, addressing the fact that 40-50% of household food is wasted before it ends up in landfills or compost bins. By enabling people to repurpose non-edible leftovers and organic matter into functional items at home, the Foodres.AI printer promotes what the creators call “hyper-local circular economies.”

Beyond its practical applications, the Foodres.AI printer represents a shift in how we think about waste. Instead of viewing food scraps as something to be disposed of, this technology encourages users to see them as raw materials for creation. By making sustainable behavior interactive, creative, and rewarding, the product builds a community-driven culture of eco-consciousness. ‘With every step’ installation unfolds in the Italian Dolomites

 

As part of SMACH 25, the seventh edition of the international open-air art biennale, a large-scale installation titled ‘With Every Step’ by graphic designer Hans De Backer, also known as Drukdoenerij, has been realized in the landscape of the Italian Dolomites. The work explores perception and movement through spatial composition and site-specific intervention.

 

Installed across a mountain valley, the piece comprises 146 vertically positioned wooden poles. Arranged with precise alignment, these elements collectively form an anamorphic message that becomes legible only from a singular viewing point. This approach relies on the principle of forced perspective, where disparate elements align visually only from a designated position, activating the work through spatial engagement.

Drukdoenerij’s work emphasizes time, space, and perceptual shift

 

The installation responds directly to its environment, integrating into the alpine terrain of the Dolomites, a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. Designer Hans De Backer’s (Drukdoenerij) work is one of ten proposals selected for SMACH 25, chosen from over 300 international submissions by a jury chaired by designer Stefan Sagmeister.

 

This year’s biennale operates under the theme La cu, a Ladin term meaning ‘the whetstone.’ The curatorial framework references sharpening tools as a metaphor for shaping the future while acknowledging historical context. De Backer’s intervention addresses this theme by requiring physical movement through the landscape for the message to become visible, foregrounding the relationship between time, space, and perception. ‘With Every Step’ installation is accessible to hikers and visitors throughout the summer, forming part of a wider dialogue between contemporary art and the Dolomites’ natural and cultural heritage.

karim+elias’ desert drop series evokes layers of the landscape

 

Continuing their tactile, layered exploration of rammed earth as both medium and message, Karim+Elias present two new works in their ongoing Desert Drop series. The set of wall-mounted lamps and sculptural stem vases were unveiled at the inaugural edition of Downtown Design Riyadh, extending the design duo’s pursuit of reviving and evolving the ancient construction techniques through contemporary design.

 

The lamps combine sedimentary earth with hand-blown glass, forming softly lit wall pieces that glow from within, while the vessels, grounded in form and tone, integrate a glass chamber for floral stems. Echoing the organic silhouettes and striated surfaces of their earlier coffee table — debuted at Dubai’s last Downtown Design — the new works treat sand as a narrative material intertwined with regional history and identity. In doing so, the designers honor ancient craft traditions while giving them new expression in functional, collectible objects that evoke the beauty of the region’s natural landscape.

From desert strata to luminous forms and earthen vessels

 

Known for their layered, striated objects made from compressed sand, clay, and natural pigments, the Dubai-based designers take a deeply material-led approach that treats sand as a medium with layered narrative and historical weight. Their previous public interventions and architectural experiments have brought the traditional logic of rammed earth into contemporary contexts, developing totemic installations, thin-wall sand skins, modular screens, and hybrid pieces that occupy the space between sculpture and architecture. With Desert Drop, Karim+Elias continue this trajectory on a smaller scale, bringing desert tactility into the home through collectible objects.

The Desert Drop Wall Lamps, handcrafted entirely from earthen materials and naturally pigmented layers, combine two synonymous materials — sand and glass — into a single form. A hand-blown glass shade recesses into the rammed earth body of each lamp, housing a soft bulb with dimming features for ambient lighting. The tactile surfaces echo sedimentary layers, while the use of glass, itself derived from sand, closes the loop between natural material and refined object. The layering of tones and textures creates a geological rhythm, turning each lamp into a luminous fragment of landscape. Each of the Desert Drop Stem Vases also evokes the undulations of sand dunes and is made using the same layered rammed earth process. The grounded vases are designed to hold small floral arrangements, featuring a slender removable glass chamber nested inside for fresh water and flowers.

Pollen Robotics introduces Reachy Mini, a programmable and animated desktop robot that can recognize faces, listen to voices, and talk to people. Designed to help users learn and explore robotics, coding, and AI, the device is compact enough to fit on a desk or small table, and it weighs 1.5 kilos, so users can also bring it anywhere, even in their travels. For programmers, the desktop robot Reachy Mini comes as a kit, meaning they can build the device themselves and install their own programs. It is also plug-and-play, so once it’s built, it’s ready to go and help.

 

In the open-source files, the robotics team gives the users around 15 behaviors so they can make the desktop robot Reachy Mini wave, turn its head, move its antennas, and even react to specific sounds. Because of its motorized head and body, it can move in different directions and ways, and the animated antennas also make the device more alive, as if it were a pet. The team believes that making the programmable desktop robot Reachy Mini animated helps it feel more alive and fun to interact with compared to just having an immobile smart device.

Animated Device that recognizes faces and answer questions

 

Pollen Robotics’ desktop robot Reachy Mini can see, hear, and talk to people because of its cameras, microphones, and speakers embedded into the device. The open-source files that the team, composed of Matthieu Lapeyre and Thomas Wolf, has uploaded can help developers of all levels program the device to their needs. With these tools, it can recognize faces, listen to voices, or answer questions, and even respond in a friendly way using AI models. At the time of publishing, the desktop robot Reachy Mini is programmable using Python, but the team says that in the future, it can also work with JavaScript and Scratch. 

 

There’s a Reachy community where users can download code from others and share their own programs, too. So far there are two versions of the desktop robot Reachy Mini, with the ‘full’ version having its own computer, wireless connection, and battery, so it can run without needing to be plugged in all the time. The team adds that the device has a simulation too, so developers can test and run their programs on a virtual robot before they install them in the actual one. Pollen Robotics has made all the designs, codes, and tools open-source, so anyone can use, see, and improve them. At the moment, the lite and wireless versions of the device are available.

Transforming connecticut’s Manresa Island

 

The unveiling of the vision for Manresa Island marks a significant milestone in the revitalization of Norwalk, Connecticut. Designed by the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) in collaboration with landscape architecture firm SCAPE, this ambitious project aims to transform a decommissioned power plant site into a vibrant 125-acre public park. Surrounded by water on three sides, the site will serve as both a recreational hub and a center for education and ecological restoration.

 

Originally, Manresa Island was home to the Manresa Institute, a retreat and recreation destination during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, in the 1950s, it was converted into a coal-fired power plant. With its decommissioning in 2012 following Hurricane Sandy, the area has begun to recover ecologically, showcasing birch forests and increased osprey populations. This revitalization sets the stage for the transformation into a public amenity that reconnects the community with its coastal heritage.

Adaptive Reuse and Community Hub by bjarke ingels group

 

Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and SCAPE, commissioned by local residents Austin and Allison McChord, is focusing on the adaptive reuse of the existing power plant structures in Connecticut. The plan of Manresa Island includes the preservation of key components, such as the boiler building, turbine hall, office building, and the iconic smokestack. These structures will be reimagined as a network of spaces designed for events, education, and recreation.

 

The eight-story boiler building will become a recreational facility featuring swimming areas and dining options. The turbine hall will be transformed into a versatile event space and speakeasy, while the office building will provide classrooms and laboratories for marine and ecological studies. An underground water channel will be uncovered, creating a scenic connection among the buildings.

Manresa Island will feature a diverse array of outdoor spaces that promote engagement with local habitats. Highlights include a large green lawn, a public beach with views of the Long Island Sound and New York City, and pedestrian bridges for wildlife observation. The aquatic theme will be evident through outdoor thermal pools, a revitalized pier, and a boat launch, providing ample opportunities for water-based recreation.

Inside Kodalli’s Residence, an olive-toned foyer leads to a double-height living area with exposed brick walls, wooden rafters, and a cantilevered staircase — all brought together with an eye for detail and craft. Ashwin Architects’ use of natural textures further adds a sense of depth and softness, creating a tranquil atmosphere for the residents. Upstairs, a family lounge fosters informal gatherings, while the son’s bedroom, tucked under the sloped roof, is bright and characterful. A quiet study nook above provides a dedicated corner for focus and reflection. ‘Privacy and proximity come together in thoughtful balance,’ notes the team.

 

The architecture allows individuals to retreat into their personal spaces or engage in shared experiences — from family time on the terrace deck and movie nights in the home theatre to everyday moments in the open-plan living areas. Spread over three levels, the house supports freedom of expression for every family member.
