Here’s a simple invention designed to save landscapers and lawncare businesses money:

It’s simply a hitch receiver supported by a telescopic bar that can be attached to the front arms of any zero-turn, whether sit-down or stand-on. This allows the user to attach a number of D’ttach accessories to the front of the machine, instantly transforming what was only a grass-cutting machine into something with far more utility. Commercial zero-turns are expensive, often running into five figures, and the D’ttach add-ons save the operators the expense of needing to haul a second dedicated machine to the jobsite.

Sculptural LOOPS Lamp Creates Dramatic Shadows With Plaster and Sisal

Lighting design has come a long way from simple table lamps, but most of us still expect our fixtures to look pretty much the same whether they’re on or off. That predictable approach is exactly what makes Taeg Nishimoto’s LOOPS lamp so refreshing and compelling to look at.

This sculptural piece looks almost boring during the day, but flip the switch, and suddenly your entire room transforms into a canvas of intricate shadows. The Japanese designer has created something that challenges what we think lighting should do, serving as a tangible marker of where light originates.

At first glance, you might wonder what all the fuss is about. The lamp is built from pretty humble materials: sisal rope, plaster, concrete, and steel rods. Nothing fancy there, but Nishimoto’s approach to working with these materials is where things get interesting and unexpectedly organic. He starts with short pieces of sisal rope, each measuring between 35 and 60 centimeters, then untwines them to create loops that form unexpected shapes. The process sounds almost accidental, which is exactly the point Nishimoto wants to make about his design philosophy.

Each sisal loop gets temporarily stabilized with fabric hardener before being wrapped in carefully applied plaster layers. This isn’t the kind of plaster you’d pour into a mold, but rather a substance that transitions rapidly from liquid to solid, creating distinctly handmade surfaces. Individual plaster-covered loops are assembled into clusters, but not according to any predetermined plan. Instead, Nishimoto finds three or more contact points where the loops naturally touch, creating connections that feel as random as formations you might find in nature, like sand dunes.

The assembled cluster sits on four thin steel rods rising from a concrete base that houses the actual light source. This concrete cylinder provides stability while maintaining the lamp’s sculptural presence. Even this utilitarian element gets finished with plaster, creating visual continuity throughout the entire piece. The dimensions work out to roughly 40 to 50 centimeters in plan and 70 to 80 centimeters tall, making it substantial enough to command attention. But here’s where LOOPS really shines, literally. The dramatic transformation between its lit and unlit states is pretty remarkable to witness.

During the day, the plaster texture makes the entire sculpture appear relatively flat and unremarkable. Switch on the flood lamp hidden in the base, however, and suddenly the complex geometry reveals itself through shadows cast on walls and ceilings with almost mysterious effects. These aren’t just simple silhouettes, but intricate patterns that shift as you move around the room. It’s this interplay between light and shadow that elevates LOOPS beyond mere functional lighting into something approaching art installation. Nishimoto has created three prototypes so far, each one unique.

That said, there are some practical considerations to keep in mind with this design. The handmade nature means each piece will be different, which could be challenging for anyone wanting consistency. The lamp also relies heavily on placement and surrounding surfaces to create its shadow effects.

It might not work as well in every space, and you’ll need to consider how the shadows will interact with your existing decor. Still, LOOPS offers something refreshingly organic compared to typical mass-produced lighting fixtures. It’s a reminder that compelling designs can emerge from letting materials take the lead.

Backpacks are not what they were a few years back when you didn’t want to carry them to the office but only pack them for a hike. Carl Friedrik has been ahead of this curve, consistently designing luggage that redefines luxury travel. The brand’s latest release, the 72-Hour Backpack, illustrates this commitment. It offers far more than you might expect from a traditional backpack. How’s that, you’ll find as you read on.

First things first, the Carl Friedrik 72-Hour Backpack skips the traditional top-load feature in favor of an organizational travel backpack design, which means its front panel unzips fully to let you use it like a suitcase. This convenience is enhanced with a premium exterior made from nubuck leather. Together, the plush look and feel, and comfortable packing experience, make this backpack a must-have for your weekend getaway or a work trip.

If you’re wondering why a weekend, the name 72-Hour Backpack is derived from the fact that Carl Friedrik believes this backpack can let you pack at least three days’ worth of clothing and accessories in its multitude of pockets, while still maintaining its sleek profile and elegant appearance. Of course, by its appearance, you cannot believe it can accommodate that much. But thanks to the eight pockets and compartments onboard, it lets you stow away your travel essentials with utmost convenience, and carrying it is comfortable on the shoulder using the nicely padded straps.

The backpack features two large interior pockets. The larger pocket can be used to store shoes, while the smaller zipped pocket can accommodate clothing. The laptop goes into its designated section (a 16-inch laptop compartment, i.e.), and the water bottle is in the zippered pocket on one side. One fascinating quick-access pocket on the top is positioned there so you can instantly reach out to the wallet, phone, or other smaller items you have stowed in there. There are also a couple of hidden pockets for valuables inside.

With its interesting compartmentalization and luxe finish, the 72-Hour Backpack measures 30 cm wide, 18 cm deep, and 46 cm high. For the inquisitive, the bag has a 25L capacity and weighs only 1.7 kg without any contents inside. According to the information provided by Carl Friedrik on its product page, the backpack with its “panel detailing and straight-lined structure…closely mimics the company’s line of hard-shell luggage.” And to ensure it complements the luggage range, it has an integrated luggage holder to slot it seamlessly onto the trolley when you’re dragging it through the airport. Magnet Residence is a large-scale residential development in Tirana, Albania, designed by Studio Libeskind in collaboration with Kontakt LTD. Situated within a key urban area of the city, the project spans approximately 150,000 sqm and is conceived as a high-density, mixed-use neighborhood that integrates architecture with landscape and public space. The design addresses the evolving urban and cultural context of Tirana, proposing a model for contemporary living that prioritizes connectivity, ecological responsiveness, and spatial openness. Organized around a network of pedestrian routes, public piazzas, and landscaped gardens, the project aims to create an active urban fabric that supports both communal interaction and residential privacy.

 

Residential buildings are arranged in a rhythmic formation, responding to the site’s orientation and natural light conditions. Apartments are designed to maximize daylight access, cross-ventilation, and views, with balconies and setbacks incorporated to mediate transitions between interior and exterior space. Transparent materials and articulated facades contribute to the permeability of the blocks, allowing for both visual openness and privacy.

The Măldărești area stands out through its rich and diverse built cultural heritage, which includes a significant number of historical landmarks — from archaeological remains, public monuments, and memorial or funerary structures, to remarkable cultural landscapes shaped around traditional rural households and historically evolved urban fabrics. The region’s cultural identity is further reinforced by its longstanding reputation for traditional Romanian craftsmanship, sustained over generations. For Amalia Savu’s proposal for the new Center for Innovation and Research in Traditional Crafts, the design theme emerged from a critical issue increasingly encountered in contemporary architectural practice: the shortage — or even absence — of specialists in traditional building techniques.

 

This challenge becomes evident as early as the design phase, especially when working within valuable traditional contexts or engaging in restoration efforts. In response, the design aims to provide an architectural and cultural solution: a space dedicated to the practice, preservation, and transmission of traditional crafts. Although rooted in the past through the activities it hosts, the center is designed to be contemporary, engaging, and appealing to younger generations — acting as a meaningful bridge between heritage and the future.

‘My intention was for this center to be more than just a place for practicing traditional crafts; I envisioned it as a space where visitors can authentically experience rural life, within a setting that evokes the atmosphere of a traditional household,’ notes architect Amalia Savu. I believe that only through such direct engagement can one truly understand and appreciate the meaning behind each traditional craft.’

 

The core inspiration for the project came from the layout of the traditional Romanian household, organized as a courtyard-like enclosure, with the main house at the center, surrounded by auxiliary buildings, gardens, and orchards. This model is reinterpreted in the proposed design through a main building hosting an exhibition space (museum), a restaurant, and a commercial area, surrounded by workshop spaces located in the basement, and theory and research spaces on the upper levels.

Accommodation units are placed on the northern side of the site and are connected through a shared porch facing south, encouraging circulation and visual interaction between functions. The entire ensemble follows a modular structure, adapted to the natural slope of the terrain, and is interconnected by walkways linking the museum with the workshop buildings. These walkways allow visitors to observe the artisans at work from above — creating the experience of a living museum where process becomes part of the exhibit. The basement houses the workshops, the restaurant kitchen, and technical spaces. At ground level, the main building includes the reception and restaurant, while a parallel volume contains the conference hall. Above the workshops are classrooms for theoretical instruction, and on the northern edge of the site are the accommodation units.

 

On the first floor, above the restaurant, are the museum and the library; across from it, above the conference hall, is the research area, while the sleeping quarters of the accommodation units are located further north. The proposed construction system is based on a wooden structural frame with natural finishes, and the architectural expression draws inspiration from the traditional architecture of the Oltenia hill region, featuring pitched roofs and vernacular elements reinterpreted in a contemporary language.

Pocket knives are a dime a dozen, and all do the same thing. But Miami-based knife brand Peak Spec has designed an innovative feature that we believe is a first: A clip that retracts flush into the handle when not in use.

The thinking is that a protruding clip makes the handle uncomfortable, and that some users may occasionally prefer to keep the knife free-floating in a pocket, depending on wardrobe.

I do wonder how robust the retracting mechanism is. If it stands the test of time, I could see it being adapted for other objects, like power tools. For now, it exists only in the company’s $90 GhostClip knife, which has been successfully Kickstarted, with 28 days left to pledge at press time.

Other features that will be included are tuned visible light transmittance, reduced haze for visual clarity, and multilayer coatings on both the internal surface and the secondary helmet bubble. The collaboration exemplifies Axiom Space’s strategy of bringing non-traditional aerospace partners into space exploration. They also tapped Prada for the outer materials of the suit and Nokia for the cellular network systems.

For Oakley, this partnership represents a historic milestone in their 50-year history. Ryan Saylor, Senior Vice President of Advanced Product Development at Oakley, described the responsibility of equipping lunar explorers with their technology as something they don’t take lightly. The company views this collaboration as the culmination of decades of relentless innovation in optical performance and visual acuity.
