Four Design Tricks for Tight Spaces in RVs

One area where poor people and rich people’s problems overlap is with not having enough living space. For the poor, specifically with studio apartments and trailer homes. For the rich, specifically with mobile homes. Unsurprisingly, it’s mobile homes that receive a lot more design attention.

In the latter case, here are four nifty design tricks for tight spaces, by German RV manufacturer Bürstner.

The dining table, located just behind the driver, seats four in a 2+2 configuration, facing each other. But when it’s time to hit the road, the table folds away and one of the benches pivots 90 degrees, allowing the passengers to ride in a forward-facing position.

In addition to the bedroom in the rear of the vehicle, a second bed descends from the ceiling in the front.

The bathroom is quite clever. It appears to be just a toilet and sink, no shower. However, the sink and the wall it’s mounted to slide sideways, revealing the shower.

Cleverer still is the kitchen. When it’s time to cook, a pantry wall slides up, preventing any spatter from the stovetop from reaching the bedroom beyond. The range cover slides out to become a counter. A bracket on the left slides out to support the cutting board, exposing the sink. The refrigerator is below.

Bürstner has developed these for their forthcoming Signature line of RVs, which falls somewhere between a camper van and a mobile home.

It’s a pity this stuff costs so much to design, engineer and manufacture. Some of these tricks would greatly benefit those living in small spaces without wheels.

Industrial Design Case Study: Customizable 3D-Printed Lamps

The Dollight lamp is by San-Diego-based industrial design firm Official Use Only. Created under the motto “When personal design meets custom manufacturing,” the challenge was to reconcile mass production with individual customization. Kapsimalis Architects Layers Hotel rooms on Santorini’s Cliffside

 

Located in the village of Oia on the island of Santorini, Greece, Canaves Hotel, designed by Kapsimalis Architects, occupies a site overlooking the Caldera, with direct views toward the volcano and the Aegean Sea. The project combines a preserved traditional cave house with a newly constructed complex of five hotel rooms. The architectural intervention proposes a contemporary strategy of integrating hospitality functions within the morphological and spatial framework of the village.

 

The entrance to the hotel rooms takes place from its west and north side, via the public pedestrian street and through the two main exterior staircases of the complex. Taking into account the shape of the plot, the slope of its natural terrain, its relation with the pedestrian street, and the neighboring properties, as well as the optimal orientation towards the view, the individual rooms of the hotel complex were placed in a stepped manner and in a rhythmic backsliding and twist from each other. Specifically, the complex consists of four rooms on four different levels in the ground floor, and one room on two different levels on the upper floor. Each room of the ground floor comprises an open plan living space and bedroom area with its bathroom, as well as a private exterior yard with its lounge area and its plunge pool. The upper floor’s room comprises a living room and a bedroom with its bathroom, as well as two private exterior verandas with lounge areas and one semi-open plunge pool space.

Material Precision and Spatial Balance Define Hotel’s Interiors

 

Kapsimalis Architects Studio’s design aims to create a composition of rooms-cubist prisms, with reference to the scale and form of the existing white cubist architecture of the traditional village, and on the specific typology needs of the hospitality use. In the context of accomplishing the desired view and microclimate, the openings of the complex are designed with certain geometries and proportions, so as to contribute to the fluidity of the internal & external space. Parts of freestanding exterior walls, placed vertically between the yards, as well as scattered green elements, contribute to the division of exterior areas, without obstructing the view and the natural light. The composition through the creative reinterpretation and interrelation of the above reference points leads to the formation of a balanced net of forms and spaces with a minimalist architectural identity.

 

Concerning the interior of the hotel complex, off-white smooth plaster for the walls, local cement plaster for some built furniture, large slabs of dark grey marble for the floors, dark stained oak, metal works and diverse kinds of marbles for custom furniture, fabrics with different textures, mirrors, ceramic decorative pots and plates, lights made by opal glass, metal and marble, are the materials that shape the inner space and the objects that have been collected. The outer space moves in the same direction, as the colour of the exterior wall is a warm white, and its floor is a continuity of the indoor floor. The approach of the interior design is to offer an eclectic, unique style and discreet elegance that pair harmoniously with the exterior forms of the architectural composition.

blind lucid umbrella unpacks meanings of blue light with installation made of LED modules

Installation Blind Lucid Umbrella on the use of blue light

 

Artist Tony Tao Li creates Blind Lucid Umbrella (BLU), an art installation that explores the meanings of blue light using LED modules. The artwork was part of the exhibition ARRHYTHMIA at Centrum Berlin, which ran between June 27th and 29th, 2025. The theme was inspired by the concept of Rhythmanalysis by the philosopher Henri Lefebvre, which is about understanding life through patterns and rhythms. The group show featured visual art and experimental sound, and BLU fit by expressing the rhythm and tension brought about by the use of digital devices.

The installation Blind Lucid Umbrella (BLU) uses 1-unit and 2-unit LED modules wired in parallel, metal framing, socket cables, and inlet switches to realize the artwork and lighting. It also comes with 189 laser-cut and bent metal components, over 7,300 cm² of sandblasted glass, and more than 1,000 screws, hexagon nuts, flat washers, and nickel-plated spacers. The artist designed the art piece to be modular, allowing for alternate arrangements of its glowing elements so that the installation can be changed and transported for and into different, future exhibitions.

‘BLU’ captures this shift in the color’s meaning

 

The installation Blind Lucid Umbrella was conceived as a vertical composition, but artist Tony Tao Li says that the system allows for more linear, curved, stacked, or deconstructed configurations, requiring only minor adjustments to the supporting wall components and cabling. From an artistic lens, BLU is an installation that uses the color blue to reflect on how technology, emotion, and culture are connected, and how even something as simple as a color can carry deep and shifting meaning in our digital age.

Cool shade symbolizes constant digital exposure

 

‘Blue was synonymous with a frictionless, hyperconnected digital dawn,’ says the artist. ‘Yet over time, its identity shifted. What was once an emblem of progress and connectivity became entangled with corporate dominance and digital fatigue.’ These days, the color is related to big tech companies like Facebook, as well as the digital world through the use of blue light coming off of screens. 

 

It now also symbolizes corporate power, overstimulation, and the negative effects of constant digital exposure. The installation BLU captures this shift in meaning by creating a glowing, immersive space that encourages visitors to think about how this color affects their emotions, memories, and experiences in the modern world.

Who would have thought that a beauty item can also open conversations about animals that might disappear from the earth forever? The Axilone Red Data Book of Endangered Animals packaging represents a groundbreaking fusion of beauty and conservation awareness. This innovative lip balm collection transforms routine cosmetic packaging into a powerful educational tool that highlights the plight of endangered species while delivering functional beauty products.

Created by Zhejiang Axilone Shunhua Aluminum & Plastic Co., Ltd., this thoughtfully designed packaging concept centers around three critically endangered animals: the polar bear, panda, and lynx. The design team, led by Lee Li, Joy Wang, Zhongkai Xu, and Shaoliu Zhang, crafted each lip balm tube using paper leather materials that authentically replicate the natural habitats of these vulnerable species. This means it’s not just talking about endangered animals on the surface level but actually brought their actual life to the product and the conversation.

The tactile experience begins with the packaging itself, where each tube’s texture tells a story. ROOM+ Designs Green-Focused Mixed-Use Project in Ho Chi Minh

 

The Jungle by ROOM+ Design & Build represents a singular approach to boutique mixed-use architecture in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. In response to the increasing density and spatial constraints of Vietnam’s urban centers, the project presents an alternative mixed-use model that integrates residential, commercial, and communal functions within a compact site. Located on a 300-square-meter south-facing corner plot near the city center, the project accommodates over 800 sqm of program, despite urban planning restrictions including a 12-meter setback and a chamfered corner reserved for future road expansion.

 

The program includes a 150-square-meter basement, approximately 300 sqm of retail and commercial space, nine one-bedroom apartments ranging from 30 to 45 sqm, and a rooftop café with co-working areas. A vertical core positioned at the rear, combined with clearly defined service zones, allows for column-free interior layouts. This arrangement optimizes both flexibility and usable floor area, supporting potential future adaptations such as apartment combinations. A defining feature of the project is its treatment of the facade and balcony system. Balconies of varying shapes and sizes are distributed across the elevations, enabling passive shading and informal outdoor use. These spaces also function as planters, encouraging vegetation to grow across the building envelope. Informed by Vietnamese urban living habits, this integration of plant life with residential use reinforces the building’s engagement with the local environment.

Jungle Arranges Vertical Planted Balconies and Curved Volumes

 

Architectural detailing further emphasizes this naturalistic approach. The exterior incorporates curved glass, vaulted columns, and a material palette of clay finishes and local stone, while the interiors extend these design strategies with soft contours and organic textures. Each apartment opens onto one or two balconies, maintaining visual and spatial continuity between interior space and the external environment. At the top of the structure, a semi-sheltered rooftop café and co-working space is framed by slender tree-like columns beneath a translucent roof. A rooftop garden, accessible via an external zigzag stair, provides additional communal space and elevated city views, contributing to the project’s broader goal of spatial generosity within a tight footprint.

 

ROOM+ Design & Build Studio embeds environmental strategies throughout. Openings are designed to enhance cross-ventilation and daylight access. Rainwater is harvested via the column structure and reused for irrigation and fire safety. The project also integrates solar water heaters, Low-E glass, LED lighting, and automated watering systems. Material selection combines local resources such as granite, ceramic, cement tile, and wood with recyclable elements like aluminum, gypsum, and fiberboard. Rather than a single-use solution, The Jungle operates as a layered and adaptable urban typology. It reconsiders how compact mixed-use developments can accommodate ecological responsiveness, spatial efficiency, and public engagement in dense city environments.

Bandit9 Ducati 821 motorcycle built for mountain roads

 

Bandit9 releases the Ducati 821 motorcycle with a polished aluminum surface that gives the two-wheeler a reflective body. Originally commissioned by a rider who admired the brand’s EVE Odyssey model, the custom-built vehicle is specifically tuned for mountain roads. Every part of the Ducati Monster 821-based motorbike has been redesigned, re-engineered, and hand-fabricated, resulting in a sculptural ride made of aluminum and MotoGP-grade ABS. The Bandit9 Ducati 821 motorcycle can operate both for racing and on tight, curving mountain roads. 

 

Its low weight, which is approximately 175 kilograms, and engineering give it sharp handling, and it also features a split-body design: the main, reflective surface is made of aluminum, while the rear and seating are made of carbon fiber. The setup helps improve its balance and rider feedback, especially on bumpy paths. Around the Bandit9 Ducati 821 motorcycle, there’s sleek LED lighting, a single-sided swingarm, a gas cap that’s machined from aluminum, too, and a range of polished and hand-finished components like fork covers and screws.

Specs-wise, the Bandit9 Ducati 821 motorcycle features an 821 cc, 8-valve V-twin engine that produces 110 brake horsepower and 65.8 foot-pounds of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 201 km/h. The chassis includes a custom steel trellis frame with cast aluminum sections, which can improve the structural rigidity and responsiveness, while the front suspension is made up of non-adjustable 43 mm Sachs forks. On the rear, the two-wheeler comes with a Sachs monoshock that has adjustable preload and rebound.

 

Braking is handled by dual 320 mm Brembo monobloc radial calipers in the front and a 245 mm Brembo disc in the rear, both equipped with ABS for safety. The motorbike also uses 120/70 x 17 front tires and 180/55 x 17 rear tires, which are standard dimensions for high-performance sport bikes. Additional custom elements include the exhaust, muffler, foot pegs, and rear controls, all integrated for a uniform and clean look throughout the Bandit9 Ducati 821 motorcycle. So far, the team says there are only nine units available for this model.

A cluster of glowing organic forms echoes the contours of New Zealand’s mountain range in ENESS’ new public art installation. The Whispering Mountains merges artificial intelligence with spiritual storytelling, reimagining ancient oracles for the digital age. Interactive, inviting, and somewhat uncanny, the work appears in silent contemplation but wakes up when visitors walk past. Activated by this movement, the peaks deliver voice-generated messages that blend AI musings with philosophical provocation. Some utterances are humorous, others more meditative, but all invite reflection on how we live today — and how we might live with, or be shaped by, intelligent machines.

Referencing the pilgrimages that have historically brought people to the mountains in search of spiritual clarity, the Australian studio uses these artificial oracles to prompt visitors with questions about authorship, identity, and technological destiny. As artist and ENESS founder Nimrod Weis explains, ‘Visitors are surprised by the quirky interaction with the Whispering Mountains and the messages delivered by AI sparked interesting conversations — this is art on the frontier!’

The Whispering Mountains then fuses technology with material presence, translating invisible digital systems into a tactile public encounter. Within the glowing forms, ENESS has embedded a responsive system that uses motion sensors and AI-generated text to deliver short spoken reflections. The result is a playful and thought-provoking experience, building on ENESS’s broader practice of blending sculpture, code, sound, and story to create cross-generational experiences. Known for public artworks that bring interactivity into everyday urban spaces, the studio continues to explore how technology can support joy, curiosity, and shared connection — even in remote landscapes such as The Remarkables in Queenstown.
