The Huawei Pura 80 Ultra presents a fascinating paradox. It’s arguably the most innovative camera phone ever made, yet your ability to actually buy and use it depends entirely on where you live. This geographic lottery determines everything from features to price to long-term viability.

If you’re in China, this is honestly a no-brainer for photography enthusiasts. You get the full HarmonyOS experience, 5G connectivity, satellite communication, the larger 5,700mAh battery, and official support. The phone works exactly as intended with seamless ecosystem integration. For Chinese users who prioritize camera performance, there’s no compelling reason to choose anything else. Everything just works the way Huawei designed it to work.

European buyers get a relatively straightforward path too. Huawei officially sells the Pura 80 Ultra in European markets with proper warranty support and legitimate retail channels. Yes, you’re stuck with 4G LTE only, smaller battery, and Google services workarounds, but the photography capabilities might justify these compromises for serious mobile photographers.

US buyers face a completely different reality. You’re looking at gray market imports where resellers will charge you an arm and a leg. Expect to pay significantly more than retail price with zero warranty protection, no software update guarantees, and potential carrier compatibility issues. You’re essentially buying a very expensive camera that makes phone calls, with all the risks gray market purchasing entails. It’s a gamble that might not pay off long-term.

The camera performance genuinely rivals dedicated equipment. That switchable dual telephoto system delivers optical zoom quality you can’t get anywhere else, while the 1-inch sensor produces images with professional-level dynamic range.

But the software situation complicates everything. Google services don’t work out of the box and require technical workarounds that aren’t guaranteed to stay functional. If you’re deeply invested in Google’s ecosystem, this phone becomes significantly less appealing regardless of camera quality. The photography might be incredible, but daily smartphone tasks become frustrating. That’s a tough trade-off for most people to accept.

Gaming performance shows clear priorities with AnTuTu scores around 1.17 million putting it well behind current flagship standards. The Kirin 9020 handles photography brilliantly but can’t match Snapdragon 8 Elite devices for gaming. If mobile gaming matters to you, look elsewhere. This phone knows what it is and doesn’t pretend to be a gaming powerhouse.

The bottom line: If you live in China or Europe and photography is your primary smartphone use case, the Pura 80 Ultra represents the current pinnacle of mobile camera technology.

For US buyers, the math becomes much harder. Gray market pricing, warranty concerns, and software limitations create significant barriers. Unless you’re a professional photographer who absolutely needs this camera system and money isn’t a concern, there are safer flagship options available domestically.

This phone succeeds brilliantly at pushing mobile photography into professional territory through genuine hardware innovation. Whether that translates into value for you depends on where you live and whether you’re willing to navigate Huawei’s current market complexities. It’s incredible technology that unfortunately isn’t accessible to everyone who might appreciate it. Geography shouldn’t determine access to innovation, but that’s the reality we’re dealing with here.

Concept Apple MIDI Drum Machine makes me wish Apple had created Logic Pro X hardware

There are a bunch of products I wish Apple created – a projector, an SSD, a drone, a printer (in fact, here’s a list of 10 of them), but Dorum Simsek’s tapped into yet another category and product I wish Apple delved into… electronic music. Designed to be what I can only imagine is Apple’s first (and only) MIDI music-making instrument, the iDrum brings quick ideation and composition to the Apple ecosystem.

Remember when Apple used to put the letter ‘i’ in front of devices? The last device with the i prefix (believe it or not) was the iPad, which released 15 years ago in 2010. Apple has since, rejected the prefix, opting for more directly named devices, like Watch, TV, and Vision Pro. The iDrum is a relic of that Steve Jobs-ian era, and to be honest, it has the simplicity of something Jobs would unveil. 14 pads, a touch-sensitive surface, and 6 function keys. The iDrum is simple, and evokes the same kind of playful joy that ROLI’s products do.

Most conceptual devices created for companies usually follow the design language of said company. Someone mocking up a concept for an iPhone 17 would obviously try to make it fit into Apple’s design DNA – but the iDrum does something entirely different, it goes for a music-ready design language, balancing minimalism with practicality. The iDrum is an all-black ‘slab’ with keys, mimicking the black colorway seen on products from AKAI, M-Audio, KORG, etc. It’s simple, intuitive, and works perfectly with Apple’s own music production software, Logic Pro X.

Metal isn’t a very music-friendly material, if you ask me. Buttons need to be mashed repeatedly if you’re composing away, and the standard practice is to make buttons (and by extension product housings) out of some soft material like rubber or a rubberized plastic. To that end, the iDrum has a rubberized design, with rubber buttons that have edge-lighting, and a touch-sensitive tab that lets you play around with effects. The way most drum machines work is by letting you program a sound, loop, effect, or instrument to a pad. The iDrum has 14 such pads, giving you a veritable smorgasbord of audio options. The effects panel further lets you push the boundaries to making music.

Connect the iDrum to your machine, fire up Logic Pro X, and you’re quite literally ready to make music. Although conceptual, I’m assuming assigning audio to keys should be absolutely child’s play, and the iDrum actually lets you create four ‘scenes’ with different key-bindings. So you could, in theory, shift between techno, dubstep, house, and classic drumpad styles.

Sadly, the iDrum doesn’t exist, and there’s really no plan for Apple to enter this market. However, if it did, the MacBook and iMac would easily become the de-facto music making machine for most electronic artists. I’ve seen deejays like Skrillex and Porter Robinson make entire masterpieces with just a laptop – imagine what magic they could create with a dedicated MIDI drum machine!

Nigel VMU × The FA: Cup Culture installation reshapes football culture through design, memory, and community. In collaboration with The Football Association (The FA), artist and designer Nigel VMU developed Cup Culture, a spatial and design-focused activation surrounding the 2024/25 Emirates FA Cup Final between Manchester City and Crystal Palace. The project was situated across two club-specific locations, Manchester and South London, and extended into Wembley Stadium, using design to explore contemporary football identity, community engagement, and heritage.

 

At the core of the project were two sculptural replicas of the FA Cup trophy, each measuring six feet in height. Constructed in Nigel VMU’s sculptural style, the pieces were fabricated as mobile installations for public interaction. One sculpture was allocated to each club and placed initially in local community hubs, where fans were invited to inscribe personal messages onto the surface. These inscriptions became part of the visual and material language of the sculptures. On match day, the two sculptures were relocated to the players’ tunnel at Wembley Stadium. Their position within this transitional space established a direct visual and symbolic link between the fan communities and the game itself, framing the final as a culmination of collective memory and local support.

This included two custom-built foosball tables, each tailored to the visual identity of Manchester City and Crystal Palace. These pieces functioned as interactive installations within community spaces, using game mechanics to support expressions of identity and affiliation. A set of limited-edition FA Cup community medals was also produced for the project. Distributed during local activities and competitions, these medals served as physical artifacts marking participation in the activation. Their design emphasized collectibility and symbolic value, reinforcing the shared narrative constructed around the Final.

The moment I saw LEGO’s new Arkham Asylum set, I knew this was something special. After years of smaller Batman builds, we finally get the massive 2,953-piece institution that feels worthy of Gotham’s most dangerous criminals. Standing over 12 inches tall, this isn’t just another licensed set—it’s a proper architectural statement that captures the foreboding presence of the asylum perfectly. The three-story modular design means you can actually split it apart and rearrange sections, which opens up endless display possibilities. For $299.99, you’re getting serious value when you consider the piece count and that impressive lineup of 16 minifigures.

I love how LEGO has handled the interior spaces. The prison cells actually open, the walls come apart for easy access, and there are genuine sightlines throughout the entire structure. You can peer into different sections and create your own scenes with all those villains they’ve packed in. The transparent support pieces let you pose Batman swooping down from the roof or have characters seemingly floating mid-escape. H-One Pro Concept Keeps the Modular Phone Dream Alive

The modular smartphone dream feels like ancient history at this point. Google’s ambitious Project ARA never made it to market, and LG’s modular G5 experiment crashed and burned so spectacularly that most manufacturers decided swappable phone components were a dead end. Yet somehow, the idea of customizing your device with interchangeable parts refuses to completely disappear.

Despite the technical nightmares and market failures, designers keep returning to the modular concept because the core appeal remains undeniable. Being able to swap out phone components for different functionality sounds amazing in theory, even if reality keeps proving otherwise. The latest attempt comes from the H-One Pro concept, which takes a more focused approach to modularity.

Rather than trying to make the entire phone modular like Project ARA attempted, the H-One Pro limits the swappable components to one specific section. There’s a removable rectangular block on the back of the device, positioned right next to the dual camera setup. This single modular bay handles all the customization possibilities without requiring the complex engineering that doomed previous attempts.

The default configuration includes a camera module featuring a massive 1-inch sensor, which would deliver significantly better image quality than typical smartphone cameras. When you don’t need that level of photography performance, you can simply pop out the camera block and replace it with something more useful for your current situation.

The most practical alternative might be the extra battery module, which adds 2,600mAh of capacity to your phone. This eliminates the need to carry separate power banks, since you can just swap in extra juice when you know you’ll be away from chargers for extended periods. Claw-inspired Gaming Mouse turns your first-person shooter into a game of hunter and prey

The year is 2010, I had just convinced my dad to buy me a gaming laptop, saying I needed a great GPU to run the rendering softwares I needed for my design school. 19 year old me had just become a gaming enthusiast, and had just recently discovered his latest brand obsessions – Razer and Alienware. Everything Razer and Alienware made was hallowed to me, I had never seen a company embrace such a raw, futuristic, dominating design language before. Somewhere down the line, we’ve sort of left that language behind. Gaming apparatuses today are merely black forms with RGB lighting… but Gor Stepanyan and Isaev Workshop have managed to revive the beast that was the design era of Alienware and Razer.

Aptly named ‘CLAW’ this gaming mouse looks like it was forged by an EDC knifesmith. The mouse boasts edges so sharp you need a license to wield it in public – and it ditches that boring RGB template for an aesthetic that prioritizes visual dominance. It looks equal parts alien and equal parts predator, harnessing the kind of aesthetic I wish I saw more gaming-tech companies harness.

The mouse features a unique design that combines ergonomics with edginess. There are parts of CLAW that are designed to rest the hand comfortably, and others that genuinely feel like they could be used to cut open a packet of Doritos while gaming. The body, for the most part, has the classic right-handed gaming mouse form factor. There’s a comfortable thumb-rest, with ridges that enhance grip while boosting airflow, so your hand never gets sweaty while playing. However, the CLAW name comes from its left and right hand buttons. Shaped to look like two claws emanating from the mouse, they come with pointed tips, but most importantly, have a design that expands and retracts, like the claws of a jungle cat.

This unique mechanism helps you customize your mouse size in a pinch, but what’s even more beautiful is the fact that the claws have a running gap between them. This gap houses what feels like a levitating scroll wheel, made from a rose-gold metal, which contrasts against the mouse’s gun-metal finish just perfectly. For a gaming mouse, the CLAW surprisingly doesn’t have any added buttons, but it does have a few profile-switching buttons on the bottom that let you alternate between presets, letting you switch from gaming to browsing to photo/video editing in a jiffy.

The mouse is wireless, obviously, but it does let you use it in a wired capacity thanks to a USB-C port placed in the front. This charges your mouse too, working in a dual capacity so that your peripheral never rests. This is also why a gamer worth their salt will never rely on Apple’s Magic Mouse…

This mouse, unfortunately, exists merely as a concept from the mind of Stepanyan (I honestly tried searching online). Although conceptual, it does present an interesting visual case study for gaming gear. Companies need to shed their RGB-related baggage and embrace exaggerated cyber-design. If the CLAW proves anything, it’s that this aesthetic fits perfectly well into the gamerverse… even though it doesn’t have a single LED backlight.

Crocs is a brand that you either really love or really hate, and a lot of people have been pretty vocal about the latter. But what you can’t deny is that they have come up with pretty interesting collaborations over the years, like those with Hello Kitty, G-Shock, Haribo, Beam, and even Dragon Ball Z. I probably still wouldn’t wear them, but seeing how they are able to integrate different brands into their weird footwear is still interesting.

Their latest collaboration is pretty sweet as we’re getting doughnut-inspired clogs. The Krispy Kreme x Crocs collection brings two worlds together in what they’re calling an “icon for an icon” partnership between the classic Original Glazed Doughnut and Crocs’ signature Classic Clogs. This unique union promises to deliver both comfort and crave-worthy style to fans of both brands.

The “transparent” metal body sounds way cooler than it actually turns out to be. It’s basically just a small window at the top of the device, which is marketing speak for a tiny see-through section. But honestly, it works better than expected. This design choice adds just enough visual interest without making the tablet look like a prop from a cyberpunk movie. The aviation aluminum frame feels premium in your hands, giving you that satisfying weight that screams quality.

What really sets the REDMAGIC Astra apart are the configurable RGB lighting elements strategically placed on the REDMAGIC branding and within the turbofan assembly. Designed by Delmulle Delmulle Architecten, the house creates a rhythmic gradient along the streetfront as it shifts from solid to translucent, the shimmering glass laid in stretcher bonds at the top blending in with the neighborhood’s urban character while infusing a contemporary clarity. The Glass Brick House is set within a dense, fully enclosed plot in Waterwijk, Amsterdam, navigating tight spatial constraints with a layered architectural response that ensures privacy, openness, and thermal efficiency through unified architectural expressions.

Delmulle Delmulle Architecten has placed bedrooms on the lower levels for privacy, while the upper floors open out into luminous living spaces. This inversion is reflected in the facade itself, as the opaque base gives way to a translucent top. ‘The bold glass-tiled facade is surprisingly harmonious,’ note the architects. ‘It speaks the language of a typical terraced house: brick-laid in stretcher bond and framed with window moldings that reference the stepped-gable house from 1707 further down the street.’ This forms a double-skin envelope, a feature that lends the Glass Brick House its individual character while it serves as a calibrated response to the constraints of the site. 

 

With neighbors on all sides and limited exposure, the glass skin filters daylight deep into the plan while enabling enhanced insulation and privacy from neighbors. Acting as a light filter, thermal buffer, and visual screen, it allows the compact house to breathe and glow. From within, the changing conditions of the Dutch sky animate the interior through this prismatic envelope, producing a soft, atmospheric quality that’s often rare in such constrained urban settings.

 

Inside, the studio has stripped the house back to its essentials for a light, warm feel. White-stained wood walls and terracotta flooring form a muted, tactile palette that foregrounds volume, daylight, and quiet thresholds between rooms. Spatially, the home stretches across multiple levels, with a vertical configuration that responds directly to its facade — rising from enclosed to open, shaded to sunlit.

Industrial Design Case Study: A Steam Iron Organizer

Here’s a nuts-and-bolts ID case study from The Metcalfe Group. The Ohio-based consultancy was called on by a consumer products company after the first ID firm they hired didn’t meet muster.

Ironing Out the Kinks
A market-leading plastic manufacturer was looking to expand their offering of self-branded products. After a false start with another industrial design firm, they approached us to design a new iron organizer for consumer and commercial markets. They asked for a creative product design that would stand out in its field and offer new value, and we delivered.

After assessing the current market of iron organizers, we began the industrial design phase by exploring a variety of functional and aesthetic concepts, all represented by 2D sketches and physical models to ensure legitimacy. Exploration with rough, functional prototypes allowed us to devise novel ways of retaining a clothes iron, giving us insights that would have been unlikely to surface from merely sitting at a desk.

Even in the conceptual stage, physical mockups were created to validate each idea presented. Once a concept was chosen, a fixture was created to determine the ideal angles, dimensions and other geometry to refine its mechanics and ensure safety. We also created a test fixture which simulated real world scenarios and compared the new design to competitors. Through multiple iterations, we were able to create a design that matched or beat the competition in all tests, leading to a safer product.

After aesthetic and feature refinements, we modeled the product in CAD, working with the client’s manufacturing and engineering departments. This ensured that the final product design, despite challenging geometry, would be optimized for molding upon delivery to the client. After delivery, we remained available for production support. In addition, we provided illustrations and graphic design for the commercial box, and our high-fidelity prototypes were used for the product photography and pre-selling.

In the end, The Metcalfe Group was able to fulfill the client’s objectives for a stand-out product, not a “me too”. This gave them a compelling safety story as well as a patent-pending design. Operationally, we remained within their cost target and produced a fresh new design that was well-received by their market channel and end customers.
