An adaptable office building for wikicampers

 

The new headquarters for Wikicampers, located in Bidart, France, is a workplace designed by French architecture firm Collectif Encore with future change in mind. The building was commissioned to accommodate the projected expansion of the camper van rental platform, which has grown steadily since its founding in 2012.

 

Rather than following a fixed plan, the project is conceived as a framework for ongoing evolution. Wikicampers envisions a structure capable of adapting to the shifting contours of its team, operations, and culture. The architecture reflects this mindset, supporting a collaborative and responsive organizational model and balancing ecological constraints on a challenging site.

Working with the team at Wikicampers, Collectif Encore create an efficient and transformable building — one that could accommodate up to one hundred employees in the future without compromising operational flexibility in the present. To achieve this, the architects employ a post-and-beam structural system that minimizes internal partitions and maximizes spatial versatility. The long-span design makes it possible to reconfigure floor plates, lease unused space, or stage temporary events.

 

This approach is at once cost-effective and pragmatic. Minimizing foundations reduces material consumption during construction, while the open-plan layout allows departments to expand or contract over time. The building serves Wikicampers now, while also creating room for it to grow and host others within the region’s active startup ecosystem.

Engaging a Complex Site

 

Collectif Encore’s Wikicampers workspace is located on a challenging site which is steeply sloped and marked by three protected trees. Found along the edge of a zoning boundary, the parcel also came with a high parking quota that had deterred previous buyers. Collectif Encore responded by preserving the wooded perimeter and placing the parking beneath the building, reducing its footprint while enhancing ground-level access to green space.

 

Positioned among the trees, the building’s lower levels feel grounded and immersed in vegetation, while upper floors gain open views of the landscape. Each level steps back slightly from the one below, creating shaded terraces that act as both climate moderators and informal meeting zones.

 

The building’s environmental strategy is subtly integrated. Glazing is concentrated on the east, south, and west facades to capture winter sunlight, while deep balconies protect against summer glare. Natural ventilation flows through operable openings, reducing reliance on mechanical systems. The concrete slab delivers thermal mass, keeping interior temperatures stable without air conditioning.

Performing wheelies is not everyone’s cup of cake, even though they look freakin cool. It takes a lot of practice, swollen muscles, broken bones, and truckloads of patience to get the act together. It’s a ballet of striking the right balance and precise power delivery that gets tougher with powerful machines, or ones that weigh a whole lot.

If you always thought of impressing the crowd with your wheelie skills, but never dared to go through the tough part of perfecting the skill, this mini electric bike is for you. With the push of a button, the two-wheeler automatically positions itself in a wheelie stance without any skillful input from the rider. Called the Wheelie Fun Bike V1, the modular electric pit ride raises to a preset angle and maintains that position.

The bike created for urban junkies and the younger generation is the perfect way to enjoy the thrill of a wheelie without actually putting in any effort. This is one of the modes of the bike, which they call Push to Wheelie, wherein you press a button on the handlebar and the bike does the rest. Leaning forward increases the speed while leaning back reduces the speed of the bike. While doing all this, the onboard sensors ensure the two-wheeler stays where it is meant to without flipping or tipping over.

The other, more advanced mode is the Digital Wheelie Bar. This is tailored for users who want a semi-automatic wheelie experience to tame their skills. The mode is ideal for riders who have started their wheelie journey. To lift the wheels, one has to push the throttle, and the electronic stabilization keeps the bike balanced. For better testing of your skills, the anti-loop feature helps prevent any abrupt rotation. The saddle of the bike is designed to support the rider’s body when the wheelie mode is on.

For motorheads who like to tune things, there is a companion app where you can control the bike’s systems. It is very easy to tune the behaviour of the throttle, brakes, wheelie angle, sensitivity of the anti-loop, and other parameters defining the riding physics. Other than that, the app has a dashboard where live data, speed, power levels and crucial alerts can be tracked. The rider can adjust modes of the two-wheeler to get the desired power delivery, range and comfort level while riding. To make things interesting, the app comes with connected social features that help you track your performance against your friends. Things like the longest wheelie performed, the top speed achieved while in a semi-autonomous wheelie mode, and more.

The buck doesn’t stop there, as the EV has a modular design for easy upgradability. You can change or replace parts like lights, batteries, or the seating without much fuss. On the technical front, the bike has a range of around 30 miles, which can be extended with an optional battery pack. Just for the record, the wheelie button performance can be done at a top speed of over 35 miles per hour, which is impressive. The machine can deliver a peak power of 5,000 watts courtesy of a six-inch high-torque hub motor. Zellerfeld and Havaianas team up to produce the latter’s first-ever 3D printed flip-flops, complete with a rounded toe cap. Set to launch in September 2025, the footwear’s top still has a Y-shaped strap, a familiar design of the sandals company’s products. It connects between the big and second toe and extends along the sides of the foot. 

 

The brand’s name is printed on the strap, along with a textured pattern, which is a prominent part of the 3D printed design. The toe area is covered with a rounded front piece, wrapping over the front of the foot and linking it to the base. This toe covering helps to hold the foot in place and protect it from being exposed.

Zellerfeld’s 3D printing signature comes through the footbed, too. Here, the area has a textured surface, including small raised patterns that can help prevent the wearer from slipping. The footwear’s bed follows the curve of the foot, and it rises at the heel and along the sides to provide structure and support. There are no visible seams, and the whole design appears to be printed in one go. The bottom of the 3D printed Havaianas flip-flops shows a layered circular pattern coming from Zellerfeld’s 3D printing process, which may help with grip when walking.

The pair has a molded shape that wraps around the foot, likely designed for comfort and stability, and the rounded toe cap and lifted heel suggest the footwear can reduce pressure on the foot. YouTuber creates Ultimate SEGA Game Gear: Humble handheld revived with HD screen and USB-C port

The SEGA Game Gear may not have reached the same level of popularity as the Nintendo Game Boy, but since its release in 1990, it has been a favorite among modders and retro collectors. The modding community has had a strong desire to see the Game Gear do more than its intrinsic capabilities. And one of the most passionate enthusiasts amid them is Tito Perez, the creator of the YouTube channel, Macho Nacho Productions.

Tito has worked on several Game Gear mods in the past, but this one, where he has been able to provide a new-age charging system, better audio output, and a finer screen to relish the gameplay, might be his most impressive and intriguing modification of the handheld yet. Dubbed the Ultimate SEGA Game Gear, it gives the portable console another chance in the spotlight almost 35 years after its launch.

Designer: Macho Nacho Productions

For this, the SEGA Game Gear has been retrofitted with a new motherboard, which is connected to stereo speakers, USB-C charging, an HD screen, and an HDMI port within a specially created shell that’s very 2025, as the Game Gear innards themselves. The refreshed classic started with the picking of some integral components – CPU or ASIC chip, link port, and cartridge reader – from the original motherboard brought off of eBay. These components were then soldered onto a brand-new board, specially designed by SYF.

The SYF motherboard provided a power slot for USB-C charging. This allowed Tito to solve the problem of finding new AA batteries for the handheld in the middle of an immersive game. The custom board also ensures placement of dual aftermarket speakers for stereo sound, and the SYF GGFM, which features an authentic FM chip from Yamaha to enhance sound when playing compatible Master System games on the retrofitted Game Gear.

The USB-C charging port can power the two rechargeable batteries – 2,000mAh each – while the LED light indicator highlights charging and charged status in yellow and green colors, respectively. Foster + Partners unveils plans for a luxury retail plaza set along the northern edge of Istanbul’s Golden Horn, part of a wider waterfront redevelopment that reclaims 1.6 kilometers of underused shoreline. The project is located within walking distance of major historic sites and combines contemporary commercial design with references to the area’s maritime and industrial past. Designed as a walkable, tree-shaded sequence of pavilions, the plaza anchors a large-scale urban transformation, the Tersane masterplan, that introduces public promenades, green spaces, cultural venues, and mixed-use buildings to the Golden Horn estuary.

The architects at Foster + Partners conceived the Golden Horn Plaza to be a top spot for high-end brands from around the world. They also planned the surrounding area to be comfortable for the environment and welcoming for public use by including a canopy of trees, cooling water features, and shaded pathways to moderate the local microclimate while offering spaces for respite and circulation. Interspersed throughout are covered terraces and a cantilevered restaurant offering sweeping views across the estuary. Foster + Partners notes that the scale and proportion of the development reference the site’s layered history, with flexible storefronts and pavilions allowing for long-term adaptability.

 

Landscaping is inspired by Istanbul’s historic gardens, and it plays a crucial role in heat mitigation and environmental well-being. Between the plaza and the waterfront, a new public square serves as a civic platform for year-round events and cultural programming. Described by Foster + Partners as an ‘integral part’ of the overall Tersane vision, the project reflects the studio’s longstanding interest in urban regeneration and placemaking. ‘The architecture and landscaping work in harmony,’ says head of studio Nigel Dancey, ‘to create a year-round cultural and lifestyle destination.’

Better UX Than Roadside Flares: LED-Equipped Lizard Flares

When a new technology emerges, smart industrial designers think about how it could be used to improve or replace incumbent products. Ideally, products built around the new technology would be attractive; failing that, they should at least improve the user experience. These Lizard Flares, while they’ll never make it into the MoMA, are an example of the latter.

Traditional roadside flares have several flaws. The first is that they’re dangerous, burning at up to 1,500°F (815°C), which is why they can remain illuminated through rain. In addition to providing a burn hazard for the clumsy, they can also ignite dry grass or, if you’ve been in an accident, fuel or oil spilled onto the roadway. Secondly, you can’t extinguish a flare; you have to wait for it to burn out before you can dispose of it. Thirdly, flares emit toxic chemicals as they burn. Fourthly, these are single-use items. Lastly, they must be disposed of as toxic waste.

All of those flaws make Lizard Flares a much better option.

Each has 15 high-intensity LEDs that provide 360° visibility from nearly a mile away.

They’re weatherproof and shatterproof.

They have both a hanging hook and a magnetic backing, if you want to attach them to a vehicle or other object.

An LED cluster in the middle provides flashlight functionality.

And they can of course be reused.

The downsides: Traditional flares run $3 to $5 a pop, whereas Lizard Flares are $9 to $10 each, depending on whether you buy multiples. Lizard Flares also require three AAA batteries per unit, which further adds to the cost, and which will eventually need to be replaced (AAA battery shelf life is typically 5 to 10 years). Still, for the elderly or those with dexterity issues, Lizard Flares are the far safer choice.
