Asus ROG WOLED gaming monitor can push refresh rate from 540Hz to insane 720Hz

At Gamescom 2025, in Cologne, Asus has gone ROG. The Taiwanese multinational’s Republic of Gamers has announced two new-age OLED monitors that are definitely going to send the gaming community into a frenzy. In the pursuit, these are not your ordinary run-of-the-mill OLED panels: the ROG Swift PG27AQWP-W and ROG Strix OLED XG27AQWMG gaming monitors are loaded with specs and features, some of which we have not seen before.

The ROG Swift PG27AQWP-W, for instance, is billed as the world’s first OLED monitor with a 540Hz screen refresh rate and the 4th Gen Primary Tandem WOLED display. The panel is developed by LG Display. It uses less power compared to standard OLED panels and offers “15% higher peak brightness, 25% wider color volume, and 60% longer lifespan,” than the 3rd Gen WOLED monitors.

Both are 27-inch ROG OLED gaming monitors and probably the first displays of their size to pack Tandem OLED technology. First of the two, the ROG Swift PG27AQWP-W is an exciting 27-inch monitor, and for another, not known before feature. The monitor has a 2560 x 1440p native resolution display, which promises a 540Hz refresh rate as mentioned, but more interesting is the dual-mode technology of the panel to support a refresh rate of up to 720Hz when the resolution is scaled down to 1080p.

According to the press information, the exceptional refresh rate of 720Hz is possible at an HD-ready resolution of 720p. But TheVerge notes that it has “fact-checked with both Asus’ JJ Guerrero and LG Display that the panel is 1080p at 720Hz.” So even at the scaled-down resolution, the highest possible refresh rate ensures smoother graphics, while the panel technology offers enhanced brightness and an impressive color gamut, making sure the user experience is unparalleled.

In addition to giving the user an option when to prioritize refresh rate or resolution, the ROG Swift OLED PG27AQWP-W provides a boosted HDR brightness and an array of connectivity options. This includes the DisplayPort 2.1a UHBR20 with 80Gbps bandwidth. It has been decked with a new stand that has an aesthetically pleasing silver finish and a transparent rear providing an insight into the panel’s innards. The monitor flaunts a gamer-friendly blue light and features TrueBlack Glossy coating, which allows the panel to deliver sharp images and truer blacks in all lighting conditions.

As informed, Asus is also releasing the ROG Strix OLED XG27AQWMG OLED monitor. The little brother may not be as intriguing, but it sure has the ability to entice many gamers. The monitor touts a 280Hz QHD display, which should be good to play games on demand. If you want to save the real estate on your desktop, this monitor is one to have; it is, according to ROG, 30 percent smaller in size than other 27-inchers. While the ROG Stix has either HDMI 2.1 or DisplayPort 1.4 for connectivity, it shares the Neo Proximity Sensor with its flagship brother. The sensor automatically blackens the screen when the user steps away from in front of it. This saves the effort of manually powering off the monitor. There is no word on the pricing and availability of these monitors yet, but we expect them to be expensive.

The design, created in collaboration between MEDEZA (led by Francisco Parra) and the Querencia Design Center and Construction, embraces the clarity of a modular column-and-beam system free of bearings walls, drawing inspiration from Le Corbusier’s Maison Domino. This structural principle grants the building an inherent flexibility, allowing it to adapt and reconfigure to future needs, reflecting an architecture that is at once pragmatic and poetic.

Quinn Nelson, known as Snazzy Labs, modernizes the 1984 Apple Macintosh on his own using a 3D printed case and a Raspberry Pi that runs the MacOS. A DIY unit that users can build, the device faithfully follows the Mac design. It uses a Raspberry Pi 3B+ computer inside the 3D printed case, with the latter housing the 10.5-inch display with a 3:2 aspect ratio. It matches the original Macintosh screen shape but with more screen space.

 

The main body of the modernized 1984 Apple Macintosh prints horizontally on a 3D printer bed, since the case measures larger than most printer build areas. The creator used an H2D printer for the full-size construction, slightly tapering the case walls to match the computer’s shape. The display connects through a mini HDMI to a full-size HDMI adapter cable, and a 180-degree adapter bends the cable to fit inside the case. The display receives power from a USB-C cable, with the display mounting on a cantilever system instead of filling the entire internal space.

Buildable computer that runs macOS using raspberry pi

 

In a Youtube video, the creator Snazzy Labs documents the making of the modernized 1984 Apple Macintosh. He even prints the rainbow-styled Apple logo from that year, ironing its surface using the printer to add some finishing to it. Specs-wise, the Raspberry Pi 3B+ mounts on a custom tray inside the 3D printed case, and the tray prints with a dual-nozzle setup using PLA plastic for structure and TPU rubber for cushioning. The tray includes cutouts for USB ports and Ethernet connection. The system runs the System 7 operating system through Basilisk II emulator software, which recreates the original Macintosh user interface and functions. 

 

Then, the Pi processes the emulation and outputs to the display. Original Apple peripherals connect through adapter cables, allowing the use of vintage keyboards and mice with the modern Pi computer. Even the filament colors match the original Macintosh beige color scheme. Snazzy Labs has uploaded the files for all 3D printed components for those who want to produce and print their own modernized 1984 Apple Macintosh, including the main case body, Pi mounting tray, and Apple logo sections.

A team of South Korean designers transforms discarded eggshells into Re:shell, a biodegradable building material

designed as a series of modular, interlocking brick-like elements. Conceived to combat the nation’s rising construction waste, the project utilizes the natural properties of eggshells to create a zero-waste composite with applications ranging from small products to large-scale architecture. The blocks safely return to nature at the end of its life cycle, serving as a sustainable solution to a pressing urban problem in South Korea.

TACKLING SOUTH KOREA’S CONSTRUCTION WASTE MANAGEMENT

 

The project began as a response to South Korea’s rapid industrialization and urbanization, shaped by large-scale construction from the 1970s and 80s. As many of these aging structures are slated for redevelopment, the nation faces a significant waste management challenge, with construction materials accounting for 45% of the nation’s total waste. The design team, part of the Living Design Lab at Seoul National University – Department of Design, addresses this issue by merging traditional Korean architectural philosophy with a new material science.

LOCAL WASTE TURNS INTO MODULAR BIODEGRADABLE BRICKS

 

The team chose eggshells as the core material for their abundance and ease of collection from local bakeries and restaurants. Crucially, the main component of an eggshell is calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), a key ingredient in cement that provides strong binding and hardening qualities. The production process involves washing, drying, and grinding the shells into a fine powder, which is then combined with natural additives to enhance its properties. The team experimented with red clay for improved durability, wheat bran for a smoother texture, and straw for greater flexibility and lighter weight. The material demonstrated exceptional hardness in strength tests and showed clear signs of natural decomposition when buried in soil, ensuring zero residual waste.

 

Inspired by a design philosophy rooted in the unity of nature and human, the team created prototypes for various scales. Echoing Korean traditions like the portable soban table and adaptable room layouts, the Re:shell composite offers a versatile and scalable application range, from small-scale products and interior partitions to exterior facades. The team’s future goals include developing waterproofing while maintaining 100% biodegradability and exploring its potential as a structural building material.

J.AR OFFICE opens brutalist garden restaurant ‘golden avenue’ in brisbane

Golden Avenue, designed by J.AR OFFICE, has opened as a new hospitality destination for the heart of Brisbane’s CBD neighborhood. The multi-level restaurant and bar precinct is conceived as a lush courtyard for the city, combining architecture, interiors, and landscape to create an urban sanctuary within a dense commercial district.

 

The project is operated by the hospitality group Anyday, which calls for the venue to introduces a spatial typology that emphasizes openness, greenery, and climate-responsive design rather than enclosed dining environments typical of the CBD.

Context and Architectural Strategy

 

Golden Avenue occupies a low-rise, heritage-protected pocket of Brisbane, adjacent to historic buildings and surrounded by high-rise towers beyond. The team at J.AR OFFICE approached the site with a deliberate sensitivity to scale, choosing a human-level form to engage directly with the street. The design emphasizes the Australian city’s subtropical climate as an integral part of the hospitality experience.

 

The structure itself draws from brutalist sensibilities, using green-tinted off-form concrete, pink Juparana stone, and dense plantings to form a layered and textured palette. This contrast between monolithic assemblies and abundant greenery brings a visual weight with a sense of oasis from the surrounding urban landscape.

J.AR OFFICE’s Climate-Responsive Design

 

Unlike many hospitality venues in the CBD, Golden Avenue is designed by J.AR OFFICE as an open-air building that minimizes dependence on air conditioning. Shading strategies, thermal mass, and passive air circulation are combined with ceiling fans to create comfort throughout Brisbane’s varied seasons.

 

Seven retractable roofs and operable shutters enable the building to adapt to changing conditions, admitting light and air when desirable while providing cover during heavy rain or strong sun. This adaptability gives the venue a resilience to all-weather events, maintaining an environment that is always connected to its subtropical context.

The client brief called for a ‘Queensland version of Babylon,’ with an emphasis on lush planting and tiered spaces. J.AR OFFICE drew inspiration from Moroccan riads, pulling the main dining floor inward and surrounding it with interior gardens. The result is a setting that balances privacy with openness, with terraces, balconies, and garden courts offering varied dining experiences across multiple levels.

 

Materially, the venue is robust and tactile. Pink granite, stainless steel details, and expansive concrete surfaces are softened by greenery and natural light filtering through skylights and perforated elements. The design incorporates bespoke furniture, stone basins, custom fans, and lighting designed specifically for the project, reinforcing the practice’s commitment to detail and integration.

Titanium vs Zirconium Damascus – How the AION Folding Knife’s materials break every EDC design rule

Ostap Hel is practically a master of clean lines and hidden complexity when it comes to EDC and knife design, and his latest collab with OKNIFE proves that point in spades. The AION folding knife represents something we don’t see often in the EDC world: a genuine design partnership between a flashlight company (OLIGHT) and a knife designer that actually makes sense beyond just slapping logos together. Where most “combo sets” feel like marketing afterthoughts, this one emerges from a deliberate vision to create visual and functional harmony between two essential carry tools. The knife mirrors the structural DNA of OLIGHT’s popular Arkfeld Ultra flashlight, sharing proportions, colorways, and that distinctive polygonal minimalist aesthetic that makes both pieces feel like they belong in the same pocket.

For a debut collab, OKNIFE really aimed for the ‘made for everybody’ design approach, with three distinct variants of the same knife, each targeting different segments of the knife community. The base aluminum model delivers practical everyday carry functionality, while the titanium and zirconium Damascus editions push into premium territory with materials and finishes that justify their higher price points. The material choices tell their own story about who OKNIFE expects to buy these knives. The AION-OAL (that’s “OLIGHT Aluminum” in case you’re wondering) starts the lineup at $90 with what they’re calling “super aluminum” construction. This isn’t just marketing speak, it’s the same OAL alloy used in the Arkfeld Ultra flashlight, finished in that distinctive olive green hard anodizing that gives it a military surplus vibe without being obnoxious about it. The blade is Nitro-V steel from New Jersey Steel Baron, hardened to 59±2 HRC and coated with non-reflective DLC. AION-Ti

Step up to the AION-Ti at $190 and you’re looking at a completely different animal. TC4 titanium construction throughout, including the clip, spacer, and even the exposed screws, which get a PVD blue treatment that adds just enough color contrast to keep things interesting. The handle gets a zirconia bead-blast finish that provides grip without being aggressive, and the blade upgrades to Böhler M390 powder steel from Austria. M390 is serious steel, the kind of stuff that holds an edge long enough to make you forget when you last sharpened it, hardened here to 61±2 HRC with a hand-rubbed satin finish that shows off the steel’s fine grain structure.

The titanium version weighs in at 116 grams, which is reasonable for a full-size folder in this material. Titanium’s strength-to-weight ratio means you get durability without the heft of steel construction, though you’ll pay for the privilege. The real appeal here isn’t just the material upgrade but the overall refinement, from the precision machining to the way the blue accents play against the matte gray titanium. It’s the version that walks the line between tool and jewelry most successfully.

AION-Zr Damascus

At the top of the range sits the AION-Zr Damascus at $470, limited to just 115 numbered pieces worldwide. Zirconium Damascus isn’t something you see every day, and for good reason, it’s expensive to produce and even more expensive to finish properly. The hand heat-bluing process creates those distinctive blue-violet patterns that shift and flow across the handle surface like oil on water. Each piece is unique, which is both the appeal and the challenge with Damascus materials, you never know exactly what you’re getting until the final polish.

The blade sticks with M390 steel but adds DLC coating over the hand-rubbed finish, which seems like overkill until you consider that this is meant to be a collector piece that might actually see use. The coating protects the steel while maintaining that premium aesthetic, and at under $500, you want some assurance that your investment won’t show wear after a few months of pocket time. The weight climbs to 119 grams, but that’s still reasonable for what you’re getting.

The mirror-symmetrical handle design creates identical grip surfaces regardless of how you hold it, promoting ambidextrous use. The reversible pocket clip can be configured for tip-up or tip-down carry on either side, though the factory ships it configured for right-hand tip-up carry. The concealed bearing system uses precision-machined ceramic bearings that provide smooth deployment while eliminating the visible hardware that clutters up most production folders. That textured spine jimping gives your thumb positive purchase during use, and the liner lock engages with a satisfying click that inspires confidence without being overly stiff.

Looking at the AION in the broader context of Ostap Hel’s work, it represents a maturation of his design philosophy while maintaining the elements that made pieces like the Real Steel G5 and various Civivi collaborations so compelling. The hidden complexity, the attention to ergonomic details, and the way mechanical elements disappear into the overall form language are all signature Hel characteristics. But the AION feels more refined, something that comes with experience, as well as working with the right partners to execute a vision immaculately. From a pure design perspective, the AION succeeds by not trying to reinvent the folding knife. The proportions work, the materials make sense for their respective price points, and the overall aesthetic feels comfortably cohesive, setting a brand language I’m excited to see going forward!
