Soviet-era building in armenia hosts site-specific art program

 

The abandoned, Soviet-era Palace of Culture in the spa town of Jermuk, Armenia, hosts Architecture: Ghostly Past and Unrevealed Present, a site-specific art program by ToC Cultural Organization that explores architectural abandonment as a form of ongoing presence. 

 

Over the course of a one-week residency in April 2025, three Armenian artists, photographer Armen Ter-Mkrtchyan, sculptor Manvel Matevosyan, and printmaker Sophie Musoyan, inhabited the building, creating works directly within its walls using salvaged materials, dust, light, and shadow. Their interventions embraced its fragments, its chipped tiles, rusted frames, and weathered textures as tools for storytelling, questioning what stories the building would tell if it could speak again. 

 

Ter-Mkrtchyan’s photographs explore the passage of time by using shadows and light reflections. Musoyan uses the cyanotype process to create images that record textures and faint shapes on paper. Matevosyan builds sculptures from materials found inside the palace, creating a physical connection between the artwork and the building’s current state. The exhibition After Silence, held at the nearby Jermuk Gallery, featured the artists’ works.

Architecture: Ghostly Past and Unrevealed Present stands apart from typical reuse or heritage projects because it’s based on the idea that a building is still empty until someone enters it, moves through it, or speaks inside it. Armen Ter-Mkrtchyan, Manvel Matevosyan, and Sophie Musoyan worked with this idea when they entered the Palace of Culture, allowing the building’s materials, surfaces, and feeling to guide their work.

 

The project by ToC Cultural Organization also includes a short documentary by filmmaker Marat Sargsyan, which shows how the artists worked with the space. It was selected by the LINA European Architecture Platform and shown at the 2024 LINA Architecture Conference in Sarajevo. Through this, Ghostly Past and Unrevealed Present brings attention to Jermuk’s forgotten modernist buildings and connects them to wider conversations in Europe about decay, reuse, and the value of places that are often overlooked.

PAT is a friendly delivery robot for urban streets

As cities grow more crowded and online shopping becomes a daily habit, the need for smarter and more considerate delivery solutions has never been greater. Enter PAT, an autonomous delivery robot designed to master the last mile, which is the final stretch from distribution center to your front door. Transforming Textile Waste: How Sustainable Design is Shaping Eco-Friendly Home Decor

The textile industry produces staggering amounts of fabric waste every year, much of which ends up in landfills. But what if these discarded textiles could be given a second chance? In an innovative collaboration with Mobella Galleria, a creative team set out to prove that fabric scraps can be transformed into beautiful, functional pieces for everyday life. By using techniques like shredding, molding, and compression, they have developed playful home decor objects that showcase both sustainability and style.

The project began with a simple idea: deconstruct to reconstruct. Through a series of local workshops, designers and makers gathered to find new uses for discarded textiles. Instead of seeing scraps as trash, they saw opportunity. By experimenting with 3D-printed molds and finely shredded fabric waste, the team was able to create entirely new forms. The process involves packing the processed textile waste evenly into molds, then applying compression to lock the material into a solid shape. After carefully removing each piece from its mold, the result is a completely reimagined design object—proof that what was once waste can become valuable again.

One standout creation is Chubby, a playful yet practical sculptural piece crafted from compressed fabric fibers. Another inventive design is Skates, a tray on wheels that glides smoothly across surfaces. Made from molded textile waste and featuring a roller attachment, Skates transforms the simple act of serving snacks or organizing essentials into an interactive experience. The Link Floral Vase takes modularity to a new level. Constructed from interlocking bricks made of repurposed fabric, the vase is supported by a brass column and can be customized to suit any space. Its varied heights and rhythmic design echo the harmony found in music, merging nature and art in a sustainable way.

Lighting also gets a makeover with the Link Lamp, which draws inspiration from the shape of a light bulb. A neon tube runs through its modular segments, casting a warm, continuous glow. The lamp’s flexible design allows it to fit any mood or environment, blending creativity with function.

Finally, the Link Table reimagines upcycling by turning fabric offcuts into a striking side table. Its sculptural design, reminiscent of a bamboo forest, is both sturdy and easy to assemble, requiring no screws or extra hardware.

YouTuber 3D prints 1984 Apple Macintosh replica, powers it with Raspberry Pi running MacOS

Raspberry Pi is a fascinating gadget, at least, I believe it is capable of pulling off almost anything you task it with. My endorsement may not be the most convincing, so here is the Pi proving its mettle. A YouTuber has configured it to run the macOS sitting in the heart of a modern rendition of the Macintosh 128K, which is entirely 3D printed to replicate the iconic façade of the OG, while the rear design is restructured to be very sleek and modern in appearance.

The 3D printed 1984 Apple Macintosh empty shell is powered by the MacOS-enabled Raspberry Pi 3B+ inside. It is a brainchild of Quinn Nelson, who runs the YouTube channel Snazzy Labs. The modernized 3D case is something that you can also build yourself. Nelson has provided DIY files for the same on MakerWorld, if you are interested.

The main body of the reproduced Macintosh Personal Computer has been printed horizontally on the bed. This is done to achieve the slightly tapered design of the original, which wouldn’t be possible otherwise. It is almost a full-scale rendition, but it features a larger screen, yet maintains the same 3:2 aspect ratio of the original. The case is thus fitted with two things: a Raspberry Pi 3B+, which goes into a specially designed tray at the back is collected via I/O cables to the 10.5-inch display.

The Raspberry Pi mount tray is also 3D printed. It has cutouts for USB and Ethernet connectivity. The eternal display slides into the specially created opening to form the screen of the Macintosh computer, which is finished with the classic six-color Apple logo just below the screen. The custom Apple logo is also printed from scratch and ironed on the surface using the printer for a glossy finish.

The entire software and hardware build process of the modernized 1984 Apple Macintosh is documented in detail by Nelson in a YouTube video, featured above. If you’re interested in replicating this build, you can get a great deal of help from the visual demonstration. Coming back to the design, the display is placed on a cantilevered system which extends back in a sleep profile, high only enough to secure the cables extending discreetly out from the display and connecting back into the Raspberry Pi.

The creator has used a mini-HDMI to a full-size HDMI adapter cable to connect the display, while a USB-C cable is used to power it. Given the size of the entire build, the case and other parts have been 3D printed in an H2D printer from Bambu Labs. It has been designed in a way that allows the original Apple peripherals, such as vintage mice and keyboards, to be connected to the 3D-printed 1984 Apple Macintosh via an adapter cable, giving you a modern PC with a retro vibe. Bio-ink may usher in a new eco-friendly printing system

While we’ve become a bit more conscious in choosing eco-friendly products for our daily use, there are still things that we are not aware are causing damage to our eco footprint. Printing for example, is something that we deal with on an every day basis like with books, packaging, pamphlets, and other printed materials. But we rarely think about all the things that go into making things like ink and how it is affecting the planet we live in.

Peerasin Punxh Hutapheat, a Central Saint Martins graduate and a a London-based material innovation designer and visual ecologist, has developed an innovative bio-ink called Growink that replaces petroleum-based dyes with vibrant fungal pigments. The House on El Dragón by Estudio Cristian Nanzer is located in the Punilla Valley of Córdoba, Argentina, near Cerro El Dragón between the towns of La Falda and Huerta Grande. From its elevated plateau, the home takes full advantage of the panoramic views, aligning its orientation toward the northwest.

Set on the highest point of the plot, it commands the landscape while maintaining a measured relationship with its immediate surroundings. The stone and concrete architecture is guided by both the physical conditions of the site and the expansive horizon beyond.

These heavy, stone-filled walls hold the more functional spaces: guest rooms, a workshop, service areas, and the garage. From here, the main entrance also connects to a terrace that extends outward, linking this grounded base to the surrounding terrain.

Organized around a modular grid, the structure makes legible the hierarchy of spaces. Six-meter spans accommodate the open living and social areas, while the three-meter modules define the private rooms. A large entrance hall separates these two zones and frames views to the south as one enters from the main access.

 

Cantilevered slabs extend the upper volume outward, forming galleries around the perimeter on every side except the southern facade. Here, the linear circulation runs along the length of the house, buffered by a suspended partition that filters light and punctuates the wall with three large openings. This Pen-sized Micro Katana might just be the most fun and functional piece of EDC you see today

The first time I ever laid eyes on a Katana (or at least a representation of it), was in the Cartoon Network show Samurai Jack. Now I’m not an anime or manga person, so this cartoon, and Kill Bill, formed what became my formative body of knowledge around the Japanese warrior’s most prized tool. The Katana was considered one of the ultimate weapons – if wielded with expertise and honor, it could achieve all your goals, slicing through enemies like a knife through butter.

Now a good katana can cost upwards of a thousand dollars if you go for one that’s forged by a swordsmith, but a good katana isn’t really EDC. You can mount it on your wall and occasionally swing it around in your backyard, but you can’t carry it around with you, and you certainly can’t use it to open Amazon parcels or envelopes. For that task, may I present to you a tinier nihonto (Japanese blade), made to capture the beauty of the legendary Japanese sword, but on a smaller scale. The Treszen Stainless Steel Knife (I’m not a fan of the name, btw) or the Micro Katana as I like to call it, is a tinier, more portable, EDC-worthy alternative that costs less than $10. Before all the purists jump for my throat, this isn’t technically a Katana. Katanas have curved bellies, and this one, for the sake of manufacturing feasibility, comes with a straight blade design. That saves material, and makes CNC-machining the straight sheathe a lot easier too. The all-metal knife’s design looks larger than life, but is perfectly dagger-sized, making it perfect for indoor and outdoor tasks. It still has the personality of a sword, which is what I really love.

That personality comes from the Micro Katana’s proportions. It’s long and slender, so your mind almost imagines it to feel ‘larger’ than most stout pocket blades. It measures an impressive 9.5 inches long, with a fixed blade that’s an impressive 5.8 inches in length and crafted from carbon steel. The narrow American Tanto-style blade comes with two edges – the long and obvious one, but also the smaller edge on the front, created because of the sharp transition. This gives you two edges and two tips for a variety of tasks from piercing to slicing, scraping, carving, whittling, etc. Again, the carbon steel comes in handy here, holding its edge to wear and tear.

The knife weighs approximately 5 ounces or 142 grams (including the sheath). When closed, you’re left with this metal baton that is fun to fidget with or spin in your hands. To access the blade inside, unscrew the top and slide the knife out with confidence. The sheath and grip are fairly plain in their design (barring some CNC ridges on the ends), which is why the blade’s laser-etched pattern really gives the Micro Katana some character.

Now this ‘katana’ isn’t forged by some famous or reputed katana kaji (Japanese swordsmith). It’s manufactured the way most EDC are, using machines that ensure sharpness, precision, and consistency. It’s also why the knife can cost just under $10, making it sort of a no-brainer purchase if you want a fun, functional pen-sized EDC with a sword-sized appeal. Sure, the pen may be more powerful than the sword, so why not just combine the two, right?!
