Handsome, Stackable Cork Storage Boxes by RelvaoKellerman

I think this is kind of a stretch, but Munich-based industrial design firm RelvaoKellerman says “the box is the third archetype object in our culture history, following the table and the chair.” Their rationale is that “People always created containers for their things to be stored: Our predecessors travelled with a basket, in the medieval period people used artful chests to express their social status, sailors had their sailor boxes and the 68 generation used old orange boxes as shelves*.”

My quibble notwithstanding, the firm has designed these handsome stackable Cork Boxes for German furniture design brand Auerberg. They’re suitable for indoor or outdoor use.

They’re made from “natural toasted cork agglomerate,” which is created when cork granules are heated under high pressure. The heat activates the natural resin within cork, turning the resin into a binding agent; no chemicals or adhesives are needed.

The boxes are apparently headed for production, and will retail for €148 (USD $173) apiece. However, at press time they hadn’t appeared on Auerberg’s website.

*Note: In Europe, the “68 generation” refers to a wave of student and worker protestors, originating in France, who questioned and rejected the rise of consumer culture. I’m nutshelling it here, but using discarded agricultural boxes as furniture was a more politically meaningful version of U.S. college students using milk crates.

Ayaneo KNKR Pocket FIT Elite is a Snapdragon Elite 8-powered affordable handheld

Ayaneo has been on top of its game lately with handhelds that serve every type of gamer who loves the freedom of mobility while gaming. Known for its premium handhelds that more often than not reach the $1,000 mark (or even cross it), the brand has something to offer its more budget-conscious gamer. Under the sub-brand KONKR, the Chinese brand has just teased the first-ever budget-friendly Android handheld, which most likely will be powered by the Snapdragon Elite 8 SoC. If that’s the case, the gadget will pack a lot of power to play your favorite AAA titles. But we also have to keep in mind the overheating issues that have been spotted in the processor.

This announcement comes on the heels of the Snapdragon G3 Gen3-powered Pocket FIT, which was unveiled last month. The new model is obviously more powerful and is called the Pocket FIT Elite. The Ayaneo Pocket DS was announced not long ago, and now, this budget-friendly handheld makes a strong case for creating internal brand competition. One thing that’s crystal clear in the teaser announcement is the $399 price tag for the Elite model and $329 for the Snapdragon Gen 3-powered version. The company also threw light on its product roadmap for the future.

The handheld will compete against the likes of Retroid, Anbernic,  AYN Thor, or the Windows-powered Flip 1S DS. Given all these brands are going even lower in the price segment, the FIT Elite will fill the gaping hole that’s between the lower end spectrum of mobile gaming and the flagship handheld segment. Having a 6-inch display with 1080p resolution and 144Hz refresh rate, the device is built for performance, although it comes in the same skin as the Pocket FIT. It’ll have a beefy 8,000mAh battery for long gaming sessions on a flight or the long train commute. Like other handhelds of the current era, the ELITE will have Hall Effect joysticks and triggers, which are essential for the longevity of joystick function and in-game precision, respectively. According to Ayaneo, the gadget will be the world’s first to have a Dual-Mode Trigger Lock on an Android handheld.

To make extended gaming sessions comfortable, the handheld has an ergonomic large grip with the Ultra-FIT Comfort tech. Everything else set aside, if KONKR is indeed going to launch the handheld with the latest Snapdragon Elite 8 processor, it’ll be an interesting addition to the gamut of products on offer for modern gamers. The affordable yet performance-packed handheld is set to debut in September, which is not a long way off. We’ll be eagerly waiting for more information to seep in a few weeks to make a further assessment about this interesting proposition in the making.

Innovations in Home Lighting: Smart Outlets vs. Smart Outlet Covers

These InvisOutlet Auras are “smart outlets” that provide decorative lighting without the need to add additional fixtures.

Developed by a startup called Intecular, they’re not for the electrically timid; you do need to shut your breaker off and remove your old outlets to install these. Once they’re in, you’ve got a range of dimmable RGB colors that you can program using an app.

Despite being a bit pricey–$70 for two outlets–they’ve been a hit on Kickstarter, garnering roughly $100,000 in pledges at press time with 24 days left to go.

The design reminds us of a similar Kickstarter success from 2020. SnapPower ConnectLights (which we covered here) have a slightly different purpose. These replacement outlet and light switch covers excel at nighttime wayfinding, and are essentially nightlights that leave both sockets free.

The little racetrack-shaped hole at lower left isn’t a USB-C port, it’s a dusk-to-dawn sensor that automatically turns the light on.

SnapPower only offers white lighting, no colors; but the trade-off is they are both more affordable and far easier to install. Rather than replacing your entire outlet or light switch, you simply replace the outlet cover, and the units draw their own power through the outlet.

SnapPower offers both vertical and horizontal models.

They also have a model with a motion-activated sdensor, and can communicate with other nearby outlets.

Another benefit of the SnapPowers is that you don’t need to connect them to WiFi. Though they can communicate with nearby units, they’re standalone objects that don’t require smart home integration.

The SnapPower units run $17 to $25.

A Paradigm “Shift:” QwertyMax Keyboard Updates a 150-Year-Old UI

Believe it or not, on a daily basis you still use something invented in the 1860s. It’s not an object, but a UI: The QWERTY keyboad layout, first patented by American inventor Christopher Latham Sholes in 1867.

Initially, the QWERTY keyboard only provided capital letters, allowing early typists to send shouty correspondence to each other. But in 1878 Sholes came up with the shift key, allowing one to type both capital and lowercase letters with a relatively compact layout.

Competing designs gave uppercase and lowercase letters their own keys; with this chaotic Caligraph typewriter below, uppercase keys are black, lowercase white.

After adding the shift key, QWERTY market dominance ensued, and has persisted to this day.

Is it time for an update? A startup called TypeMax thinks so. They reckon that symbols we hardly ever used in the 20th century—like # and @—are now daily parlance. Furthermore, coders use symbols constantly. Thus the design of their QwertyMax keyboard adds a dedicated symbol row above the numbers, as well as keys for commonly-used shortcuts and browser navigation controls on the right.

The real sign of the times, though, is the QwertyMax’s addition of a key that Sholes would not have been able to comprehend. Down at the bottom is a dedicated “emoji” key. This doesn’t enable anything on the physical keyboard itself, but automatically opens your computer’s emoji panel on-screen.

At press time there was no price nor release date announced, just a sign-up waitlist promising 50% off of whatever the asking price will be.

The angular, futuristic design isn’t subtle, but it backs up the looks with genuine gaming muscle that handles everything from competitive shooters to story-heavy adventures.

That front-mounted 4-inch display is the real showstopper. Instead of alt-tabbing to check temperatures or clock speeds, everything displays right there in real-time. You can customize what shows up, making it genuinely useful instead of just flashy. The whole cyberpunk aesthetic might not age gracefully, but right now it looks quite cool.

3D Printing brings Magic Spun chair to life

The Magis Spun chair is instantly recognizable for its playful, spinning-top shape and eye-catching curves. Designed by Thomas Heatherwick, this modern classic is both a sculpture and a seat, inviting people of all ages to take a spin and experience furniture in a fun new way. While the authentic Spun chair is molded from rotationally-molded plastic and comes with a designer price tag, DIY enthusiasts have always dreamed of recreating its magic at home. Enter Morley Kert, a maker who recently took on the challenge of 3D printing his own version of the Spun chair, and the results are turning heads.

Morley Kert’s project began with a simple desire: to make a Magis Spun chair accessible and buildable for anyone with the right tools and a bit of ingenuity. He started by studying the chair’s unique geometry, using 3D modeling software to recreate the smooth, continuous curves that make the Spun so alluring. Casa Gálvez by Estudio Villagálvez stands at the edge of a dense residential and industrial neighborhood in León, Mexico, where the city unexpectedly meets a strip of greenery. This adjacency defines the identity of the residence that opens toward a communal landscape of mature trees, including a flamboyant (Delonix regia) and a eucalyptus, integrating them into its composition and framing them as thresholds, companions, and internal landscapes.

 

At the entrance, the flamboyant tree establishes scale and orientation before one even encounters the building. A covered zaguán, a traditional entrance passage in Spanish and Latin American architecture, mediates the passage inside, a vertical, concrete-framed space punctured by a circular oculus. This intermediary zone draws the eye upwards to the canopy and sets the tone for an experience structured around light, shadow, and the trees themselves.

Once inside Casa Gálvez, the space opens abruptly into a double-height volume that recalls, in contemporary form, the troje, a traditional Mexican barn used for shelter and storage. Here, however, the typology is reimagined as a suspended wooden structure that becomes the heart of the home. On the ground floor, it accommodates the kitchen and dining room, while above, it extends into a TV room and study. Floating within the central void, this suspended troje organizes collective life, maintaining visual and spatial continuity across levels.

 

Architecture practice Estudio Villagálvez concentrates bedrooms and service areas into a vertical volume arranged like a small tower. Patios are interspersed to extend the interiors outward, regulating air and light, and ensuring each space retains a visual link to vegetation. The central patio in particular functions as a bioclimatic device that allows natural airflow and solar control and as a contemplative void enclosing a protected space, while tree crowns dominate the view.

 

The volumetric composition of Casa Gálvez emerges from the interplay of the entrance volume aligned with the flamboyant tree, the soaring social core, and the compact private tower. Curved lines and earthy-textured bases mediate their connections, softening the geometry. Through this layered sequence that thresholds, double heights, patios, and shadows compose, the house is revealed gradually.

SKULL studio turns car park into play lot with installation ‘the floor is lava soft!’ in estonia

At the 2025 UIT Festival in Tartu, Estonia, SKULL studio unveiled ‘The Floor is lava soft!’ — a temporary installation that turns a car park into an unexpected playground. Led by Czech artist Matěj Hájek, creative strategist Pavel Krajčík, and photographer Bet Orten, the collective replaces asphalt and parked cars with straw bales to soften the urban landscape. The result is a curious intervention that invites passersby to touch, jump, play, sit, gather, or simply pause, blurring the boundaries between everyday infrastructure and spaces of play. Sometimes all it takes is to simply create spaces where play is allowed.

Founded in 2020 by Matěj Hájek and Bet Orten, SKULL studio positions itself as a laboratory of ideas, concepts, and visions. Multidisciplinarity lies at the heart of the practice, uniting expertise from art, design, and technology into interventions that are both playful and socially engaging.

 

With ‘The Floor is lava soft!’, the studio demonstrates its ethos in action: challenging the rigidity of the urban environment with an intervention that is ephemeral, humorous, and human. In doing so, SKULL turns the city itself into a canvas, one where softness interrupts hardness, and where play transforms everyday life.
