This September, The ReefLine will unveil its first installation by Leandro Erlich off Miami Beach, beginning a seven-mile underwater public sculpture park, snorkel trail, and hybrid reef. Conceived with OMA and Shohei Shigematsu, the project restores a section of the Florida Reef Tract while creating a site for public engagement with art and climate resilience.

 

The first deployment, Concrete Coral by Leandro Erlich, features twenty-two full-scale cars submerged fifteen to twenty feet underwater at 4th Street. Cast in marine-grade concrete from 3D-printed molds, the sculptures evoke an underwater traffic jam while providing structure for coral growth. Using Coral Lok, a patented attachment system, live corals are seeded onto the cars to accelerate reef development.

While Leandro Erlich’s ReefLine installation will be sculptural, it will also support biodiversity and act as a breakwater to protect Miami’s shoreline from erosion and rising seas. The Argentinian artist‘s units are fabricated by Madco3D at the John Olson Advanced Manufacturing Center, while 2,200 corals are being cultivated at The ReefLine’s Miami Native Coral Lab under marine biologist Colin Foord.

 

Concrete Coral marks the first step in a multi-phase cultural corridor. Upcoming installations include The Miami Reef Star by Carlos Betancourt and Alberto Latorre, and Heart of Okeanos by Petroc Sesti. Each work is designed as both art and reef infrastructure, advancing The ReefLine’s goal of planting one million corals over its lifespan.

The Peloponnese House by Point Supreme Architects is a renovated farmhouse in southern Greece that reimagines how a traditional rural dwelling can support contemporary family life. The two-story stone building, once a farmhouse and stable, was adapted to accommodate a couple and their two children, with the living areas placed upstairs and the children’s bedrooms integrated into the vaulted ground floor.

 

Through a series of thoughtfully-considered insertions, the architects introduce fluid connections between the previously disconnected levels to create new circulation routes, functional additions, and built-in furniture that make the house work as a unified whole.

With its renovation of the Peloponnese House, the team at Point Supreme Architects organizes the upper floor to house the family’s shared spaces and the parents’ bedroom. Below, the former stable with its original stone vaults was preserved, each adapted into a child’s bedroom. Timber platforms were added to provide storage and space for extra mattresses, while heavy curtains allow the sleeping areas to be separated from a central open room that serves as circulation and gathering space.

 

At the heart of this lower level, the bathroom is reduced to its essentials to free space for a multi-use passage room. This open configuration allows the once utilitarian ground floor to act as both circulation and gathering space, reflecting a contemporary way of inhabiting the old stone shell.

A new internal wooden staircase by Point Supreme anchors the new plan of the Peloponnese House, its base doubling as a seating tribune with concealed storage. On the garden-facing side of the house, the narrow gap beneath the veranda was enclosed to form a sunroom, or liakoto. This addition is programmed with a kitchenette, a daybed, and a small study corner, creating a threshold between indoor living and the surrounding landscape. On the opposite side, a former storeroom has been adapted into a practical workshop.

 

Upstairs, the architects introduced a reconstructed wooden interior facade, known as an ontas, to define the living room and fireplace. The facing built-in seating continues the rural tradition of convivial gathering spaces. A cutout in the timber floor creates a direct link between levels, offering a second access point downstairs through a discreet trap door.

PointSupreme approaches the renovation of Peloponnese House with the care of an excavation. Hidden materials, uncovered during the process, were preserved wherever possible: stone walls patched with rough concrete, original window frames in shades of mustard, pistachio, and ceramic red, and the corrugated aluminum roof weighed down with stones. These gestures respect the spontaneous, utilitarian choices of the original builders while bringing them into dialogue with the new additions.

 

New traditional features were introduced in contemporary form. In the kitchen, for example, a built-in daybed recalls the krevata, a familiar element in Greek domestic interiors, extending the communal character of the room. Across the project, old and new elements are intertwined, producing a house that feels both rooted and adaptable.

How German Design Fixed Vinyl’s Biggest Annoyance: Flip a Puck, Change Speeds

Every vinyl enthusiast knows the frustration: you’re immersed in Miles Davis at 33⅓ RPM when you want to drop a 45 RPM single into the mix. Most turntables force you to pause the music, hunt for microscopic buttons, or fumble through digital menus just to change speeds. The flow breaks, your audiophile zen dissolves into mechanical tedium, and suddenly you’re wrestling with technology instead of enjoying music.

German manufacturer Luphonic has just eliminated decades of compromise with their H2 turntable, a design that earned industry recognition as one of the best turntables under £5K in 2025.

What makes the H2 special centers on something deceptively simple: a small, coin-sized black puck that completely reimagines how we interact with turntables. When you place the puck on the white illuminated circle with the black side up, the turntable spins at 33 RPM. Flip it to show the white side and you get 45 RPM. Moving the puck away from the marker stops the turntable entirely. The current speed shows in bright red LED digits that glow directly from within the pristine white Corian chassis. No buttons, no switches, no menus – just an elegant puck that communicates wirelessly with the turntable’s brain.

The Science Behind the Simplicity

Luphonic founder Thomas Luh started the company in early 2020, just four weeks before COVID-19 hit. He wanted to create products “free from dogma and clichés” with materials chosen for technical reasons, not just looks. His thinking shows most clearly in the H2’s distinctive H-shaped chassis, which serves a specific acoustic purpose.

The unusual geometry minimizes interference between the platter bearing and tonearm, with the white Corian arms extending gracefully from the central black platter like a modernist sculpture. It prevents mechanical vibrations from messing with the audio signal while creating a visual design that’s both functional and striking. The design looks cool, but it serves a real purpose.

The chassis construction shows Luphonic’s focus on substance over flash. The H2 uses a three-layer sandwich design with solid surface material (like Corian countertops) separated by vibration-damping cellular rubber. The chassis material has low resonance because of its high density and structure, making it ideal for turntables. Making it involves seven grinding and polishing passes to get that mirror-like finish. The result looks great and sounds better.

The motor isolation strategy sets the construction apart from traditional turntables. The AC motor attaches to the lower Corian layer, while the arm and cartridge fix to the top layer. A rubber layer sits between the two parts. Such mechanical separation prevents motor vibrations from reaching the stylus, ensuring cleaner sound from your records.

German Engineering Meets User Experience

The puck system does more than look clever – it solves real problems that have bugged turntable design for decades. Traditional speed selection makes users power down the unit, manually move belts, or navigate complex electronic menus. The H2’s contactless operation eliminates wear on mechanical switches while giving instant visual feedback through the LED display. Operation stays contactless with advantages including wear-free function and prevention of unauthorized use.

Parents with curious kids or audiophiles lending their systems to friends can relax. Casual users cannot accidentally damage sensitive parts through wrong operation. The microprocessor-controlled motor achieves precision through advanced electronics rather than brute force. Each motor control unit gets individual calibration before delivery to match its specific motor. The low-vibration motor gets precise sine and cosine waves via microprocessor-controlled electronics, creating smooth running and exact speeds.

The K2 Tonearm Integration

Luphonic makes the matching K2 tonearm entirely in-house at their German facility. The tonearm uses a carbon fiber tube selected for low resonance and optimal sound properties. Unlike many carbon fiber designs that focus only on weight savings, Luphonic chose the material specifically for acoustic benefits.

The headshell construction shows innovative materials thinking. The headshell uses sintered polyamide filled with tiny glass spheres. Thomas Luh explained the design stays rigid yet light and transmits fewer vibrations from cartridge to arm tube compared to aluminum. The specialized composite gives the structural strength needed for precise tracking while reducing unwanted resonances that could color the sound. Adjustment options include height adjustment for VTA (vertical tracking angle) and azimuth fine-tuning for optimal cartridge alignment.

The gimbal bearing system uses precision Japanese ball bearings in an anodized aluminum housing. It supports cartridges weighing between 5 and 14 grams. The anti-skating mechanism uses stainless steel counterweights adjustable from 0.21 to 0.43 grams, working with nearly all modern cartridge designs.

Market Positioning and Real-World Performance

At £3,950 (about $4,995 USD), the H2 targets serious vinyl enthusiasts who want both technical sophistication and long-term reliability without breaking into five-figure territory. The turntable delivers audiophile-grade engineering at a price point that makes it accessible to dedicated music lovers rather than just collectors.

The H2’s real-world performance shines in typical listening environments where most turntables struggle. The sandwich chassis construction and motor isolation design create exceptional resistance to external vibrations, whether from footsteps on wooden floors or nearby speakers. The solid surface material and rubber damping layers work together to isolate the stylus from mechanical interference that would otherwise muddy the sound.
The turntable ships without a cartridge but includes premium cables that reflect the company’s system-thinking approach. In the UK market, distributor Auden supplies the H2 with an Audiomica Henat 1-meter cable worth over £700, demonstrating Luphonic’s commitment to optimizing the entire signal path rather than just individual components.

The Future of Analog Simplicity

The H2 represents a fascinating intersection of high-tech manufacturing and deliberately simplified user interaction. While the audio industry often equates complexity with quality, Luphonic moved in the opposite direction, using sophisticated engineering to create almost childlike simplicity of operation.

The puck system eliminates the learning curve typically associated with high-end audio equipment while maintaining the precision that serious listeners demand. For audiophiles tired of juggling technical complexity with musical enjoyment, the H2 offers a compelling proposition. German engineering precision wrapped in an interface so intuitive that explaining it takes longer than mastering it.

The real question becomes whether other manufacturers will follow Luphonic’s lead in reimagining how we interact with analog music systems. Or will the H2 remain a uniquely refreshing approach in a market often obsessed with technical one-upmanship over user experience.

French builder Quadrapol took a different approach with the Kangourou, creating a 19-square-meter house that keeps both bedrooms firmly planted on the ground floor. At 8.4 meters long on a triple-axle trailer, it’s pushing the boundaries of what people call “tiny,” but that extra length makes all the difference when you’re trying to fit real life into a small space.

The exterior doesn’t try to be fancy, just sensible. Heat-treated timber cladding handles weather without constant maintenance, while the steel roof deals with whatever comes down from above. The whole thing sits on a galvanized steel trailer that means business; you’ll need a decent truck to move this much house around, but once it’s parked, it feels solid and permanent. Large windows scattered across the walls do most of the heavy lifting when it comes to making the interior feel spacious rather than cramped.

One of the bedrooms can easily double as a home office, complete with a big window that makes remote work feel less isolated.

The kitchen and living areas flow together in the remaining space without feeling forced or overly clever. The numerous windows become crucial here, connecting you to whatever’s happening outside and preventing that closed-in feeling that can make small spaces feel oppressive. Everything serves multiple purposes, but it doesn’t feel like you’re living inside a Swiss Army knife, just a well-planned home that happens to be compact.

Quadrapol offers several paths toward off-grid living that feel integrated rather than tacked on. Solar panels, battery systems, and rainwater collection can turn the Kangourou into a completely self-sufficient setup, perfect for parking somewhere with decent sun and forgetting about utility bills. The trailer is based on a 150mm x 50mm x 3mm galvanized steel chassis and features a lightweight aluminum body, which is rust-resistant and keeps it light with the mud-terrain tires and gas shocks.

The toy hauling landing finds place at the back of the trailer, where the gas strut system helps lift the roof tent (yes, the Xplore has a canvas tent to perch on the roof, more on it below) to create access to deck your ATV or a trio of bikes. Designers Laurin Schaffner and Benjamin Relly, in collaboration with ETH Zurich spin-off Hylomorph and Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) unveil 3FOLD, a foldable, origami-inspired surgical tool that helps doctors safely apply protective pouches around pacemakers and neurostimulators. The device, produced in tear-proof Tyvek, a synthetic, nonwoven material made from high-density polyethylene fibers, unfolds in seconds during surgery, reducing application time from five minutes to just three seconds while minimizing the risk of contamination or damage.

3FOLD draws from origami, kirigami, and auxetic structures

 

Every year, more than two million implants are placed worldwide. While these devices are life-saving, complications often arise from scarring and infection around the implant. To counter this, Hylomorph created Hylomate, a biocompatible pouch that wraps the implant to safeguard the body. However, its soft and slippery surface made it difficult to handle with conventional surgical tools. Standard tweezers could tear the pouch, while direct hand contact risked contamination, calling for a new solution.

 

Laurin Schaffner and Benjamin Relly shaped 3FOLD precisely for this delicate environment. Shipped flat, the tool folds into a stable structure in a single motion, enabling the pouch to be positioned quickly and without direct touch. The design process drew inspiration from origami, kirigami, and auxetic structures, resulting in a simple fold that unlocks complex functionality. More than 500 prototypes were tested and refined with clinical staff before the final iteration was integrated directly into the sterile packaging of Hylomate.

 

The project also marked a shift in design research methods during the COVID-19 pandemic. With in-person testing impossible, the team developed remote usability protocols. Prototypes were shipped to clinicians, surgeries simulated via video calls, and camera setups improvised in homes and clinics. This method kept the design process moving but also proved efficient, yielding insights that later shaped a published framework for hybrid research in medical contexts.
