Broadly, there are two ways to approach design. Either through a utilitarian lens, or through an emotional lens. Ideally, great design balances both these approaches well, but here’s the catch. Not every design is supposed to ‘solve a problem’. Sometimes a product’s purpose can be to just evoke a response, a sense of whimsy, of happiness. Michiru’s Pet Paw Bottle does just that.

Most bottles, cups, glasses, or mugs have a tendency to leave a ring of water/liquid condensate if kept on a surface. It’s why we use coasters or table mats, so these rings don’t destroy our furniture or leave stains. Except, Michiru’s bottle was designed to make those ‘stains’ desirable. Unlike most bottles that leave rings of water or florets (especially the carbonated bottles), Michiru’s Pet Paw Bottle leaves pawprints. The underside of the bottle comes with a unique design that turns condensation or water into a unique little stamp that looks adorable… although keep it off your mum’s teakwood furniture if you know what’s best for you!

Plastic bottles come with two bases – the regular base (which you see on most non-carbonated bottles) also called the champagne base after the fact that it was modeled after the base of champagne bottles, and the petal base (popular for fizzy beverages) designed to provide stability while also counteracting the pressure of the liquid inside the bottle. The Pet Paw Bottle takes the petal base but abstracts it for the sake of aesthetics. It can do so because the water inside isn’t carbonated, which means there’s really no engineering drawback. The result, however, is adorable.

Keep the Pet Paw Bottle on any surface, and if there’s condensate, it’ll leave a print in the shape of a paw. This is cute, but the broader implications for this are incredible. We all grumble about coffee rings being left by cups lying around on tables – why not employ a similar strategy to turn those rings into art? Maybe a brand logo, maybe a whimsical emoji, maybe the literal opposite of latte art! Do you have any other ideas?

This LEGO Nespresso Machine should help you overcome those caffeine cravings

I was today years old when I learned that Nespresso doesn’t ‘make’ their own coffee machines. The machines are all partnerships with different bands like Breville, DeLonghi, and in this case, Krups. This particular build pays tribute to a classic Nespresso machine, namely the Krups YY5291FD, put together in fairly accurate detail. Although slightly smaller than scale, this LEGO Ideas Nespresso machine is built to be as functional as it gets. That means it comes with a lever, a pod chamber, and even adorable LEGO Nespresso pods!

Built by LEGO builder CorporalSpikyCockroach (sounds like a LEGO-generated name if you ask me!), this build turns the act of making coffee into something even more fun. Sure, you don’t get caffeinated in the process, but you do come out of the experience feeling slightly more enriched and energized. The MOC (My Own Creation) doesn’t have an official brick count, but it’s surely in the 1000s if you ask me. Each coffee-maker even comes with a tiny espresso cup from which to relish your golden brew.

For its compact size, the build is pretty detailed. It sports the machine itself, along with as many as 3 pods, a demitasse (espresso) cup with coffee inside, and other details like the water chamber at the back, a drip tray, and that lever that lets you lock and load your pods before brewing. Personally, even though this entire machine is merely a LEGO-based recreation, I wonder what it would be like to build an actual coffee maker out of LEGO. Something that uses LEGO bricks to crush pods and extract coffee – the logistics would be challenging (especially around the hot water, coffee, and the non-food-grade nature of the plastic LEGO bricks), but we’ve seen people build absolutely mindboggling real devices from LEGO… like this functional Turing machine.

“I built this model to combine two of my passions: quality coffee and creative building. Krups coffee machines represent a refined and elegant design that I thought would translate beautifully into LEGO form,” says MOC builder CorporalSpikyCockroach. “I wanted to challenge myself by recreating the curved surfaces and fine details using only bricks, and the result was both fun to build and visually satisfying.”

The LEGO Coffee Machine Nespresso Krups build is currently a fan-made submission on the LEGO Ideas website – an online forum where creators and mavericks build their own unique creations and share them with the global LEGO community. People vote for their favorite designs, and MOCs that hit the 10,000 vote mark are then sent to the LEGO internal team for review before being potentially turned into a box set. Constructed from TPU-coated nylon, the piece maintains constant air pressure, resulting in a structure that is both lightweight and resilient. At first glance, its playful form could be mistaken for decorative art, yet its inflatable body and welded joints give it both flexibility and strength.

SQUEEZE integrates functionality with innovation. It attaches to tabletops using pressure between air cushions, while an integrated air-pressure sensor enables light control through touch, creating an interactive experience. Designed for sustainability, the lamp folds flat when deflated, reducing weight, transport costs, and emissions. Available in three colors, its minimalist geometry and soft contours allow it to complement diverse interiors, blending playful creativity with refined sophistication.

3. Enhanced Well-Being Through Sensory Design

The experience of a space is defined not only by appearance but also by touch and form. While we often connect well-being to natural light or fresh air, the sensory qualities of our surroundings are equally important. Inflatable design brings a new tactile dimension with soft, pliable surfaces that feel welcoming and gentle. The shapes themselves add to this effect. Rounded edges and fluid, playful forms reduce intimidation, replacing sharpness with calm.

The Esch 22 Space Station 04 E22SSPIU, or short for “Pump It Up,” is a conceptual towable dwelling that inflates an upper level to accommodate up to six occupants. Conceived by Luxembourg-based studio 2001 for the city of Esch, the project functions as a research initiative rather than a commercial product. Its purpose is to provoke discussion about unconventional approaches to compact housing. The unit is constructed on a durable stainless steel double-axle trailer with a restrained exterior design, punctuated by a single, expansive rear window that introduces natural light and frames exterior views. Entry is provided by a metal ramp leading to a lower-level interior containing a living area, bathroom, and compact kitchen with essential amenities.

Once stationed, pneumatic struts elevate the roof to form a base, while a compressor inflates a double-shell dome that serves as the upper floor. This level offers cork flooring, integrated light-permeable grating, and inflatable mattresses for adaptable sleeping arrangements. Access is available via staircase or elevator, and a water recycling system supports sustainable use of resources. Though unconventional in form, the dwelling illustrates a creative exploration of adaptable housing strategies within limited space.

4. Intersection of Function and Aesthetics

For years, inflatables were seen as purely practical or playful novelties with little design value. That perception is changing as contemporary designers harness advanced materials and smart engineering to elevate them into high-design objects. Today, we see sculptural chairs, modular walls that shape interiors, and striking architectural features that prove inflatables can be both useful and beautiful.

This transformation highlights how design can merge functionality with inspiration. A translucent inflatable wall, for example, can brighten and expand a room while offering flexible layouts. Inflatables now demonstrate that practicality and aesthetic refinement are not opposites but powerful partners in innovation.

The film lighting industry has embraced many innovations, but few combine practicality and creative flexibility as effectively as ColorPipes. In Jinan’s streets, a massive soap-bubble-like dome rises above the skyline. Far from being an art installation, it is the world’s largest construction enclosure, an inflatable structure covering 20,000 square meters and soaring 50 meters high. Created by China Energy Construction Group and Licheng Urban Development Group for the Honglou 1905 project, it redefines how construction unfolds in urban spaces.

The dome’s design turns building sites into quieter, cleaner environments by trapping 90 percent of dust and cutting noise by 80 percent. For residents, it eliminates the usual disruption of dust, debris, and relentless noise. Inside, crews work in a climate-controlled space where wind, rain, or weather delays are no obstacle, enabling faster progress and higher-quality results. The dome’s temporary design makes it especially innovative. Once construction wraps up, it simply deflates and disappears, leaving no trace. Pieris Architects’ Casa Incognita blends stone and white plaster

 

Located along the Peloponnese coastline near Porto Heli, Greece, opposite the island of Spetses, Casa Incognita by Pieris Architects is a private residence designed as an extension of its surrounding terrain. The project responds to the site’s hybrid character, a mainland setting with strong cultural and spatial ties to the nearby island, through a language that combines robustness and refinement, enclosure and openness.

 

The house is embedded into the natural slope of the site, minimizing its visual impact while preserving the existing topography. Its architectural expression reflects dual identities: the grounded materiality of stonework associated with rural mainland structures and the white plaster surfaces characteristic of island architecture. The lower level is built from rough river stone, anchoring the residence to its immediate context, while the upper volume employs textured white plaster, referencing the luminous facades of Cycladic and Saronic settlements. Despite its two-story structure, the residence maintains a discreet presence, integrated into the hillside.

The spatial arrangement is defined by openness toward the sea and layered connections with the landscape. The ground floor functions as the social heart of the house, with an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area. Large glazed openings extend views across the water and establish continuity between interior spaces, the swimming pool, and outdoor lounge areas. A second aperture opens to an internal courtyard, offering a quieter, enclosed atmosphere. Auxiliary functions are integrated into the slope, maintaining the clarity of the built form. The upper level contains three en-suite bedrooms, each oriented toward natural light and views of the surrounding environment. A sculptural wooden staircase links the two levels and provides a vertical transition within the home. A separate guest wing is positioned along a garden pathway, accommodating two additional bedrooms and a shared bathroom. This configuration allows for guest privacy while maintaining proximity to the main living areas.

 

Casa Incognita by Pieris Architects Studio demonstrates an architectural approach that prioritizes restraint, contextual awareness, and integration with the landscape. Through its material palette, spatial sequence, and dialogue with topography, the residence articulates a balanced response to its coastal location between mainland and island.
