At the recent AVEDA Congress runway show, designer and creative director Dany Vo introduced a stage environment shaped by motion graphics, typography, and visual storytelling. Acting as creative lead, Vo developed a motion-driven backdrop that interacted directly with the choreography, transforming the runway into a spatial narrative rather than a static presentation.

 

The visuals, composed of shifting typography and organic graphic forms, were synchronized with the movement of models and garments. This created an evolving atmosphere in which design elements mirrored the themes of the showcased collection, blending references to nature with futuristic forms. The result was a stage concept that redefined the relationship between fashion and graphic design, positioning motion and typography as integral components of the runway experience.

Dany Vo is a multidisciplinary designer working across illustration, fine art, motion, and branding. Born in Vietnam, raised in Antigua, and now based in New York, he has worked with studios such as Design Army, Hatch Design, and FutureBrand. His portfolio includes branding projects for Apple, PepsiCo, Campbell’s Soup, The Ritz-Carlton, and PwC’s 2025 global rebranding. He has received GDUSA Awards, multiple Graphis honors, and five London Design Awards in 2025, with features in IDN Magazine and other design publications.

 

The AVEDA Congress project illustrates how Vo applies principles of motion, typography, and storytelling to a live performance environment. By embedding graphic design directly into stage architecture, the show expanded the possibilities for runway presentations and highlighted the growing convergence of fashion, media, and design.

World’s fastest amphibious car with retractable side pods can soon be yours

Amphibious cars have been on our minds, featured in movies, and showcased in prototype designs due to their unique appeal and larger-than-life approach to the daily commute. The lure of driving on water without any apprehensions, the same way as on land, just doesn’t die. Reason enough for an amphibious car to be relevant, no matter if it must be reworked from scratch to function. The Sea Lion amphibious car, built in 2012, is a great example, and it is currently up for auction.

The all-terrain all-weather vehicle built by engineer Mark Witt and engineers at SeaRoader Aquatic was, at that time, labeled as the world’s fastest amphioxus car. The one-off prototype comes with retractable side pods when the water travel mode is activated. Although the listing clearly mentions that the vehicle needs a revamp to make the amphibious mode possible, the car requires a significant amount of work before it can function as intended.

Sea Lion has a futuristic persona to it with the aluminum chassis protecting the inner mechanism and keeping the dry weight down to a minimum. This is important since moving forward in water has a whole lot of resistance issues, that can consequently take up a lot of power. The Front Wheel Drive car is powered by a 175-horsepower 1.3-liter Mazda rotary engine, and there is a jet-fighter-like stick for the steering input, which makes maneuvering the vehicle a highly tactile experience. According to Mecum’s auction listing, the front wheels on this thing “suck up into the wheel wells with hydraulic actuation.” For powering the underwater mechanism in the amphibious mode, the maker salvaged a Berkeley 12 JC jet drive pump and highly modified it.

According to Wired, the Sea Lion cost a whopping $259,000 to make, so you can very well imagine the price it could hit at the final auction bid. In its prime, the amphibious vehicle was able to hit 180 mph on land and 45 mph in water. The car was housed at the Larry Klairmont Museum Collection, and finally made it to the auction floor at Larry’s Legacy auction. The listing explicitly mentions, “Any vehicle purchased from this collection will likely require essential basic service before driving on the road, including, but not limited to, fuel system and carburetors, batteries, brakes, etc.”

For now, the one-off amphibious car is positioned at the Mecum Auctions docket for the September 20th event, where it will be up for grabs for the passionate motorheads. It’ll be interesting to watch the developments as a collector takes this thing home. Will it ever see the serene waters again, or be just a pride possession sitting pretty in the expansive living room garage of a billionaire?

Huawei claims the Watch Ultimate 2 eliminates these trade-offs through three engineering pillars: industry-first sonar underwater communication, professional-grade 150-meter diving certification, and X-TAP dual-sensor health monitoring. Built with zirconium liquid metal construction rated 8.7 times more corrosion-resistant than previous materials, the Ultimate 2 targets users demanding both luxury craftsmanship and professional capability according to Huawei.

Positioning the Ultimate 2

Huawei positions the Ultimate 2 as their flagship adventure watch targeting serious outdoor enthusiasts who refuse to compromise. The watch sits above Huawei’s Watch series for tech users, GT series for fitness enthusiasts, Fit series for fashion consumers, and D series for health monitoring.

Huawei targets direct competition with Apple’s Watch Ultra while claiming superior diving specifications and unique sonar capabilities no competitor provides. The Ultimate 2 creates what Huawei calls a new category between luxury diving watches lacking smart features and consumer smartwatches compromising professional capability.

Compared to established dive computer brands like Suunto and Garmin’s Descent series, Huawei claims equivalent diving functionality with comprehensive smartwatch integration. Ocean Blue models at €999 and Compass Black versions at €899 position against luxury adventure watches costing significantly more.

Pillar Innovation 1: Industry-First Sonar Underwater Communication

Huawei integrated the first compact sonar system into smartwatch architecture. The miniaturized sonar module operates at 3-5 kHz frequency optimized for underwater clarity and long-distance performance. Advanced signal amplification and filtering enable stable watch-to-watch communication across varying conditions according to Huawei.

The system pairs with up to 50 dive buddies simultaneously, creating underwater networks designed to increase rescue chances during emergencies. Messages transmit in 500 nanoseconds enabling real-time communication that Huawei claims surpasses traditional underwater methods.

Consider a diver trapped in low visibility conditions 40 meters down. Hand signals require direct sight lines that murky water eliminates. Flashlights work only at close range with limited battery life. Huawei’s sonar system uses natural marine animal communication technology, providing reliable messaging regardless of water clarity or environmental obstacles according to the company.

Pillar Innovation 2: Professional Diving Engineering

The Ultimate 2 achieves 20 ATM water resistance equivalent to 200 meters depth with diving functions certified operational to 150 meters. The certification meets ISO 22810:2010 water resistance standards and EN 13319 diving accessory requirements according to Huawei.

An innovative mechanical sealing system automatically engages at 30 meters depth by sensing water pressure. The system creates what Huawei describes as an impenetrable barrier under extreme conditions. Multi-layer water-resistant film maintains audio quality while preventing infiltration.

Four diving modes support recreational scuba, technical scuba, free diving, and gauge instrumentation applications. Huawei positions this as diving equipment integrated with smartwatch capabilities rather than water resistance with diving marketing.

X-TAP health monitoring extends beyond wrist-based measurements through sensor integration first introduced on the Watch 5 in May 2025. The system incorporates a finger sensor on the watch’s right side requiring index finger placement for enhanced accuracy according to Huawei.

Full ECG sensor integration provides medical-grade insights users can share with healthcare providers. Huawei’s TruSense platform analyzes data from multiple sensor points simultaneously through advanced algorithms. The dual-sensor approach maintains accuracy during intense physical activity when wrist-only sensors fail according to Huawei.

Advanced cardiovascular monitoring includes heart rate tracking, arterial stiffness measurement, and sleep analysis designed for serious athletes. Sleep tracking, stress monitoring, and emotional wellness features provide health oversight beyond basic fitness tracking.

Premium Materials and Construction

Huawei engineered the Ultimate 2 using materials typically found in luxury timepieces costing significantly more. The zirconium-based liquid metal body provides 8.7 times more corrosion resistance than previous materials while delivering stronger construction for extreme outdoor conditions.

Ultra-hard coating systems achieve 300 percent better wear resistance. Sapphire crystal glass rates 9 on the hardness scale, second only to diamond. Nanocrystal ceramic bezel and rear components provide hypoallergenic properties while maintaining premium finish quality.

The 1.5-inch LTPO AMOLED display delivers 3500 nits peak brightness designed for underwater readability according to Huawei.

The Ocean Blue model showcases diving watch heritage through blue and white 3-to-1 ratio bezel patterns drawing inspiration from classic underwater timepieces. Blue and white woven fluoroelastomer straps feature 3D wave textured finish with dual-color injection molding.

Extended diving straps and premium titanium options serve diving, adventure, business, and luxury applications. The Compass Black model targets adventure enthusiasts through black ceramic case construction with red highlights. Black fluoroelastomer straps provide sweat-resistant properties with extended options for wetsuit compatibility.

Sports and Outdoor Capabilities That Matter

Golf integration addresses the precision demands serious golfers face on challenging courses. Over 15,000 worldwide course maps provide hole layouts, hazard locations, and distance measurements. Dual-frequency positioning provides accuracy Huawei claims surpasses dedicated golf GPS devices.

Multi-week battery life means extended expeditions without charging anxiety. Cross-platform compatibility supports iOS, Android, and HarmonyOS with full smartphone integration regardless of platform. Health app connectivity enables data synchronization, health analysis, and dive log integration for session analysis and sharing.

The HarmonyOS interface distinguishes the watch from simpler fitness trackers through robust feature sets designed for applications requiring both luxury aesthetics and capability.

We’ll reserve judgment on Huawei’s sonar communication, diving depth, and health monitoring claims until comprehensive real-world testing validates performance against established competitors like Apple’s Watch Ultra and dive computers from Suunto and Garmin.

Saint laurent reopens its boutique in milan

 

Saint Laurent has renovated its boutique in Milan with works by local artists and designers, including Gaetano Pesce and Gio Ponti. Reopening on September 20th, 2025, the retail store at Via Montenapoleone, 8, introduces a third floor for the menswear collection, which was not present in the previous interiors. Colors, materials, and textures rooted in Parisian and Milanese designs harmonize inside the space. The Saint Laurent collections sit atop open shelves made of marble sourced from Italy, and the marble floor retains its gritty texture, complementing the industrial-sized carpets whose designs are inspired by pixelated images using threads and the paintings of Monet.

 

Vintage pieces occupy the same space as contemporary furniture and materials, the Maison’s hope to evoke modern classic design. Chairs from Italian architects Marcello Piacentini and Gio Ponti sit next to cherry wood and resin coffee tables made by the Austrian designer, Laurids Gallée, as well as the bubble-shaped glass coffee table shaped by the artisans in Murano, Venice. Inside the Saint Laurent boutique in Milan, there are pieces and furniture by around 70 revered and historic artists and designers, including Vincenzo De Cotiis, Marco Zanuso, Aldo Tura, Osvaldo Borsani, Carlo Scarpa, Joe Colombo, Paolo Buffa, Roberto Iera, and Giovanni Offredi, among others.

Materials from hand-shaped ceramic to eucalyptus wood

 

The Saint Laurent boutique in Milan unveils three renovated floors: the first two are for the women’s collections, while the last one, the most recent, is dedicated to menswear. Art, fashion, and design meet in the same space. Visitors walk around and find Romanesque sculptures, such as the Antinous bust from the 1800s, spread across the first floor, adding a vintage touch to the seasonal collections by the Maison as well as the shifting textures of the walls and flooring. While the entire boutique feels like an open space, the use of different materials, from marble and ceramic to iron, separates the sections with a unifying theme of earthiness and opulence.

 

Signature design elements come through inside the Saint Laurent boutique in Milan. The stairs, a staple in the Maison’s master stores, are entirely made of polished and refined eucalyptus wood sourced from Italy, and the large circular mirrors, another classic fixture in the other boutiques, expand the already landscape-esque breadth of the store. On the second floor, one section dials down the use of light materials from the other rooms, as the walls, gleamingly reflecting the lights, are forged from raw iron. Here, there is another open shelf, but this time, it is made of hand-shaped ceramic that reinstates the Maison’s link to the city of Marrakech.

Fabrics recycled from the maison’s previous collections

 

The intended concept of the Saint Laurent boutique in Milan is an Italian palazzo that is open to everyone. The designers’ furniture is placed to be used and interacted with, and the sudden appearances of raw wood, from tables and counters to panels and shelves, allow for a reminder that the shop is not just a store. There is also a hint of futurism in the interiors, mainly brought about by the use of large square-shaped lights on the ceiling, lightly dimmed to allow the warm backlights coming from the marble shelves to illuminate the rest of the space.

 

In a few of the shelves, the background shows backlit panels made of onyx, the material that the Maison repurposed from its womenswear collections in 2024 and 2025. On the third floor, the home of menswear, there is a sofa wrapped with leather recycled from the winter collection of 2024. In the same area, the walls are made from the same marble used to construct the Duomo cathedral, a way for Saint Laurent to pay homage to the city of Milan through its renovated boutique. Across the floors, artworks by Ugo Mulas and Irving Penn, as well as a portrait of Lucio Fontana, adorn the walls, sealing the attempt of Saint Laurent to allow its boutique in Milan to become an open home. The retail store reopens to the public on September 20th, 2025.

A Handsome Take on Ticket Rails: Biglow Woodcraft’s Gravity Bars

Hey, so that ticket rail we looked at yesterday? While I still think it’s a perfect object, I’ve just stumbled across a rather elegant, different take on it. Brent Biglow, an architecture school dropout turned furniture designer/builder, makes ticket rails out of wood.

Biglow has rebranded them Gravity Bars, in a nod to how gravity works with the internal glass marbles to hold them in place. (We explained that in the ticket rail post.)

His company, Biglow Woodcraft, offers them in Cherry, Maple, Walnut and White Oak, in both 20″ and 32″ lengths. Prices range from $67 to $149 depending on species and length.

Industrial Design Case Study: A Parent-Invented Device for Tube Feeding and IV Infusions

The FreeArm is a portable, bendable device that serves as a helping hand for tube feeding and IV infusions. It was invented by Will and Misti Staley for their son Freeman, who was born with complex medical needs.

“You’ll be sitting on the couch at home trying to feed your child and hold the gravity syringe at the same time, but then you have to reach over to get the milk,” Misti said in an interview with MGA Homecare, “but maybe you’ve forgotten the medicines, so you have to walk over to the other side of the kitchen to get them, all while you’re still holding your child and the gravity syringe.” Misti and Will subsequently rigged up prototypes in their garage.

Sadly Freeman passed away, after months of treatments. The Staleys knew that other families had kids with the same needs as Freeman’s, and set out to make their design available to the masses, in Freeman’s memory. They succeeded in getting a v1 out on the market, and when they decided it needed further refining, they turned to industrial design consultancy Spanner.

FreeArm

The FreeArm is an FDA Class 1 Medical Device that helps make tube feeding easier by enabling better mobility and reducing pain points for users already contending with a complicated medical condition.

Based on the learnings of an initial V1 product, FreeArm’s founder wanted to resolve product and feature issues while delivering a more feature-rich version that better reflected the company’s brand and client base.

Problems to solve
– The V1 device suffered from parts breaking in the spring/hinge area
– The V1 device felt flimsy overall and especially the hook feature to which feed bags were attached
– The V1 device was not able to securely clip smaller sizes of syringes
– The V1 design was un-branded
– The V1 device felt sterile, lacking a human touch

Design updates
Spanner’s foundation for redesigning the device was to first understand the client base and user personas. Then we proposed an iterative series of design concepts to integrate FreeArm’s branding and humanize the product.
We jointly assessed manufacturing and usability pros and cons to down-select to and execute an optimized design concept that could accept the addition of an additional hook feature.

Engineering solutions
Working closely with the FreeArm’s founder and integrating the inputs from supply chain partners, Spanner resolved the engineering issues by evaluating the nature of the failures in the V1 device before increasing the wall thickness of clip parts, redesigning the hook feature, analyzing the tolerances, and eliminating interferences that previously constrained the range of motion.
Reconciling the device’s mode of operation with manufacturability considerations, Spanner identified the best approaches for key feature changes to accommodate smaller syringe sizes.

Manufacturing considerations
Spanner considered the tooling and inventory investments already made toward other parts in the assembly that mated with the redesigned components, thereby eliminating needless incremental tooling expenditures, eliminating inventory scrappage, and mitigating assembly and validation issues.
Spanner then provided manufacturing consulting to successfully ensure that the design intent was faithfully carried forth by East Asia partners from the New Product Introduction through Mass Production.
