Habitação CL, or CL House, is a private residence in Portugal designed by Artequitectos. Conceived as an interpretation of its sloping site, the house engages topography, material, and the act of inhabiting with intentional restraint.

 

The project begins with the extension of an existing retaining wall along the western edge of the plot. This structural element defines the building’s elevation and establishes a raised platform where the home rests, aligning with the surrounding urban fabric. The placement allows the program to remain primarily at garden level and preserves the two-story profile that characterizes neighboring structures.

Turning inward, the CL House is organized by Artequitectos around a sheltered central garden. A northern retaining wall reinforces the sense of enclosure and stabilizes the terrain to create a private and contemplative patio that the architects design to shape the interior experience.

 

Programmatically, the house follows a clear hierarchy. The lower floor, partially embedded into the slope, accommodates service and support areas. Above, the main living spaces maintain a continuous relationship with the garden, with social areas opening directly to the outdoors. This layout lends an interior atmosphere that is breezy, sunlit, and private from neighbors.

With the design of its CL House, the team at Artequitectos curates an expressive material palette. The lower level is enclosed by textural gabion walls, or caged partitions filled with stone. Interiors of exposed concrete provide structural clarity and a sense of permanence. Thermally modified wood introduces texture and warmth, balancing the coolness of concrete, while travertine accents add subtle elegance and durability.

 

Through these elements, Artequitectos achieves a measured synthesis of structure and atmosphere. The materials age gracefully, reinforcing the project’s intent to integrate architecture with the passage of time. More than just a functional response, the residence encourages a peaceful daily atmosphere. The design reflects the client’s desire for a contemporary home that favors a strong connection to the outdoors.

The Future Life Village pavilion stands at the heart of Expo 2025 Osaka as an official venue organized under the theme of ‘Co-Creation and Dialogue.’ Designed by Japanese studio KOMPAS as a tiny, village-like complex, the pavilion brings together three exhibition programs — Future Life Experience, Team Expo Pavilion, and Best Practices.

 

Reflecting the Expo’s guiding principle of ‘Decentralization and Dispersion,’ the design draws from the ecological memory of Yumeshima, a reclaimed island transformed into a biodiverse wetland. At its core is a central courtyard that acts as living green infrastructure, symbolizing the cycle of life. Scattered planting beds and ponds highlight individual plant species, encouraging visitors to encounter an environment where people and nature coexist.

Around the courtyard of Osaka’s Future Life Village, circular exhibition units of varying sizes are positioned along a continuous ring-shaped circulation path. With this configuration, the team at KOMPAS allows each unit to function independently while maintaining a sense of collective unity within the Expo. The ring pathway creates a natural flow of people, and invites visitors to freely explore the village.

 

Exhibition units facing the courtyard are built with gabion walls, or hollow mesh partitions filled with stone. Constructed with steel rebar trusses and welded mesh, these cage-like walls support ventilation, filter sunlight, and even welcome plant growth. Their infills — vitrified slag stones from incinerated industrial waste and synthetic pumice made from recycled glass — highlight the project’s experimental use of recycled materials and its commitment to sustainability within the urban context of Osaka.

Rainwater and irrigation runoff are collected in a central pond, forming part of a heat exchange system that cools semi-outdoor spaces of the Future Life Village in Osaka. In summer, water is sprinkled over the gabion walls to lend passive cooling, which demonstrates a holistic approach to water circulation and natural climate control. This integration of architecture and landscape establishes the pavilion as an experimental model of sustainable design.

 

The adjacent public restrooms extend the project’s environmental strategies at a smaller scale. Built with cross-laminated timber roofing and clerestory windows, its circular layout supports efficient circulation and naturally illuminates the interiors.

Designers at YUPD and Wooks create Trego, an autonomous personal vehicle that runs with users and turns into a mini scooter after their exercise. Powered by AI, the device and vehicle guide users through their running, meaning it is not only for use during running but also before and after. It helps a user travel to the running location, supports them during exercise, and provides recovery tools after by being a mini scooter. The system connects to a mobile phone and operates in two modes: AI Mode and Mobility Mode.

 

During the AI Mode, the autonomous mini scooter Trego adapts to the user’s running pace as it runs with them. Sensors and onboard technology measure the user’s movement, and the system adjusts automatically to different running conditions to help maintain rhythm. Then, there’s the Mobility Mode after the run. It is not fun having to walk back home after the run, so the vehicle unravels its foldable handlebars, ready to be used as a mini scooter. Trego, then, functions like a small personal mobility vehicle, carrying the user to or from their running spot. The mobility mode includes a foldable footrest and a seat, which allows the user to ride comfortably.

Trego has a handle for grip and balance, and it also includes a built-in display that guides the user with directions. The display also allows the user to input or confirm a destination directly on the device without needing the phone. While running, the display shows real-time data, including the distance, running pace, and calories burned. The autonomous mini scooter Trego also comes with front and rear cameras as well as sensors. They detect obstacles, people, or vehicles in both directions. When something is detected, the device adjusts automatically to avoid collisions, and this safety system works in both AI Mode and Mobility Mode.

 

Trego has a storage compartment, which doubles as the seat, for essentials such as water bottles and gadgets. These items are secured with an elastic band inside the compartment so they remain stable while moving. Then, the device also features foldable footrests that change position depending on the vehicle’s mode. During running, they stay folded so that they do not interfere with free leg movement. In mobility mode, the footrests extend to support the user’s feet during riding. Trego comes with a docking and charging station, so when the device is not in use, it docks at a specific station. The station detects the mobility device and extends pins to connect for charging. So far, the design groups have already made a prototype for the autonomous mini scooter Trego.
