The LADIS Lamp DISinfection, a cap‑type drinking‑water UV sterilizer, has been recognized for its innovative approach to safe drinking water in underserved communities. Designed by Hwanjong Oh, the device combines compact form, solar‑powered operation, and a user‑friendly cap that can be attached to standard water bottles, delivering rapid UV sterilization that eliminates harmful pathogens.

a new Sciences Center Opens at Claremont McKenna College

 

The Robert Day Sciences Center has opened at Claremont McKenna College in Southern California, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) as the first built project of the school’s Roberts Campus masterplan. At 135,000 square feet, the new building extends the campus’s north mall toward Ninth Street and Claremont Boulevard, forming a major gateway to the college and supporting a multidisciplinary approach to science and technology.

 

The project was first commissioned in 2020 and now welcomes students and faculty. It serves as a platform for computational gene, brain, and climate research, and creates a place for computer science, data science, and the life sciences all together.

Lead architect Bjarke Ingels describes the concept for Claremont McKenna College as ‘a series of parallel building volumes side by side — with a public space in between — that are rotated in all the same directions as the mall.’ Each stacked volume is rotated 45 degrees from the one below, creating an atrium at the core of the structure.

 

Even though each of the individual building volumes are rational, flexible, and capable of being computer labs or wet labs, the open atrium in between becomes a Piranesian social space,’ the Danish architect explains.It’s a crucible where all of the different kinds of knowledge and all of the different kinds of students and teachers come together in one complex, three-dimensional learning environment.

Bjarke Ingels Group wraps its Claremont McKenna College building with a facade of board-formed glass fiber reinforced concrete, which brings a wood-like texture with the durability required for a modern laboratory. Inside, triangular steel trusses clad in Douglas fir continue the rhythm of the structure, carrying a tactile warmth through the atrium and into the classrooms. The roof’s 11,000 square feet of solar panels produce about 342 megawatt hours of electricity annually, supporting the building’s LEED Gold sustainability target.

 

The atrium itself is a vertical commons. It includes a full-height space that offers direct views into classrooms and laboratories, with a broad social stair connecting the first two levels and a café tucked below. Damien Ortega’s Magnetic Field, an intricate sculpture of Earth’s magnetosphere, is suspended thirty feet above the ground floor, and is composed of eighteen metal rings and nearly 1,500 glass spheres.

Ground-level amenities include the McElwee Forum and imaging suites, while upper floors house classrooms, research areas, wet and dry labs, the Quantum Library, and a maker’s space. Perimeter classrooms capture mountain views and remain distinct from the central social core, ensuring both focus and openness.

 

Eight landscaped rooftop terraces extend the building’s program outdoors, offering panoramic views of Mount Baldy, the surrounding campus, and the adjacent sports bowl. These terraces function as outdoor classrooms and informal gathering spaces, reinforcing the building’s role as an active center for integrated learning and research at Claremont McKenna College.

Blackview XPLORE 2 Projector is a rugged phone meant for harcore adventurers

Rugged smartphones are perfect for housing an in-built projector, as Tank 3 Pro has demonstrated. Now another one enters the arena for users who work in challenging environments, do extreme outdoor sports, engage in search & rescue missions, or love exploring virgin territory. Military-grade protection certified phones come into play where contemporary devices are deemed vulnerable to the elements, and the all-new XPLORE 2 Projector 5G by Blackview fits the bill perfectly.

The smartphone slated for global release soon is built like a tank and joins a few other rugged devices released this year. Predictably, by the naming convention, the device comes with an in-built projector, which has become an acceptable idea for utilizing the multi-functional aspect of a phone.

XPLORE 2 features a 6.73-inch 3.2K AMOLED screen having a 2600-nit peak brightness level, which is enough for even the sunniest of days. The screen has 3.2K resolution (pixel density of 521 ppi) with HDR support and an adaptable refresh rate of 120 Hz for a crisp viewing experience. The guts of the device are powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8300 chipset mated to a 16GB LPDDR5X RAM that can be expanded to 32GB. 1TB Internal UFS4.0 storage memory should be enough for outdoor explorers; still, it can be expanded to 2TB via the expansion slot.

The military-grade protected phone comes with a beefy 20,000mAh dual-cell battery that lasts an incredible 75 days in standby mode. To juice up this massive power reserve, Blackview has paired it with the 120-watt charging brick. In just 39 minutes, the huge battery is charged up to 50 percent. One can even reverse charge other gadgets at 10W speed if needed. The battery, however, adds to the total weight clocked at 710 grams, and a thicker dimension at 29 millimeters. Now, that is a heavy phone to carry for normal use!

All that memory space can be put to good use as the phone comes with a 50 MP Samsung ISOCELL GN9 primary camera featuring a 1/1.57-inch sensor. The shooter has OIS and EIS stabilization to capture fast in-motion action with maximum clarity. For night shooting, there is a 20MP night vision sensor to take pictures even in complete darkness. The front 50MP selfie camera also promises sharp visuals even in the most compromised lighting conditions. This should come in handy for recording vlogs or staying connected with loved ones.

To make the rugged phone invincible in harsh environments, Blackview has used a next-generation waterproof USB port for the IP68/IP69 K-rated device. It can be submerged in 2-meter deep water for 30 minutes. You can also subject it to extreme temperatures ranging from -20°C to +60°C, or pressure levels of 10,000 kPa without any issues. The MIL-STD-810H protection and aluminum-titanium alloy frame provide resistance against drops of up to 6 meters or a pressure of 500 kg.

For outdoor adventures, the XPLORE 2 has a dual camping flashlight with 467 lumens of brightness levels. The USP of the phone is the built-in projector that can cast a 100-inch 480p ultra-clear projection at 100 lumens peak brightness. It comes with auto vertical keystone correction and a 2-watt Smart-K Box Speaker. The company claims the phone can deliver 120 fps projection for fluid visuals.

Handsome 3D Printed Vessels by Succuc

These handsome vessels, 3D printed on Bambu Lab machines, are by European company Succuc.

To my eye they’re a wonderfully restrained application of the technology: Simple, visually arresting, doesn’t wear their 3D-printedness on their sleeve. And they make you want to touch them.

At first blush, you think perhaps they’re ceramic and were made by the world’s most fastidious Japanese artisan. It’s only when you get up really close that the production method reveals itself.

The vessels run in the $30 to $60 range, depending on size, and are available on Etsy.

Tangent is an Interactive Lamp That Redefines Our Relationship with Light

Lighting design has evolved far beyond simple switches and dimmers, yet most lamps still operate on the same basic premise: flip a switch, get light. Same Same Twin Chairs Bring Minimalist Playfulness to Everyday Furniture

Marc Newson creates a field of vibrant pixel boxes for FENDI’s SS26 set design, inspired by the composition of quilts and the look of flowers. Inside Palazzo Fendi at Milan Fashion Week 2025, these boxes are stacked up in different sizes and heights, arranged in shifting hues. From above, the landscape resembles looking at the pixels that make up an image, only up close. The surface moved slightly, creating patterns that changed as models walked.

 

The field acts as a backdrop for the collection, some of which displays the same colors and patterns as the set design. Marc Newson’s field for the FENDI SS26 show is central because its design allows for the collection to interact visually with the environment. The pixels then reflect the concept of transformation, an emphasis on shapes, lines, and volumes, and the designer’s set highlights the silhouettes of each piece even further.

Collection’s bold colors echo the polychromatic set design

 

In the FENDI SS26 collection, the jackets, coats, and dresses become visible against the shifting colors of Marc Newson’s set. The clothes include structural elements, such as balloon hems, cropped blazers, and wide cotton coats, slowly complementing the moving background because the landscape enhances the perception of the collection’s volume. Viewers can see how fabrics create fullness and void in the garments against the vibrant pixel boxes. Materials in the collection encompass organza, jacquard, cotton, leather, and technical fabrics.

 

The FENDI SS26 collection focuses on color, with the following sequence echoing Marc Newson’s polychromatic set: white, yellow, turquoise, red, pink, and coral. The colors appear in panels, stripes, and combinations on the garments, and some fabrics combine primary colors with pastels and neutral tones. The designer’s set also connects to the presentation as a whole. The runway plays the music composed by Frédéric Sanchez, comprising excerpts from Italian cinema, opera, and electronic music. The audio moves with the models and the shifting colors of the set, forming a rhythm that coordinates with the clothing, accessories, styling, and landscape.

Smart Design for a Dog Toy: Frank the Dogtopus

As a dog owner, I’m lucky I live in the country. Any excess energy my dogs have is burned off running around outside. Dogs in urban or suburban areas aren’t so lucky, and a $4 billion dog toy market has emerged to create diversions for cooped-up pooches.

This Frank the Dogtopus, designed by dog owner Ian Stack, is a smart design for a dog toy. Being made out of recycled fire hoses, it’s virtually indestructible. Each of its tentacles have three “treat pockets” made out of natural rubber.

You load the thing up with treats, then tie the tentacles into knots.

This creates a compelling “puzzle” for dogs who can smell the treats, but can only get at them by gnawing and tugging to undo the arms. Stack reckons this can tie a dog up for over half an hour.

Some dog owners might be uncomfortable with this fact, but the gnawing and tugging motions required to undo the thing simulate what it’s like to rip a small animal apart. Dogs, being descended from wolves, find these activities compelling. And it’s a lot more acceptable, in a modern household, for your dog to run around with an opened Dogtopus rather than say, an eviscerated groundhog. (I’ve seen it firsthand; it’s pretty gross.)

Frank the Dogtopus is doing gangbusters on Kickstarter, where Stack was seeking a mere $3,000. At press time it was up to nearly $125K, with 29 days left to pledge. Prices start at $50, and the units are slated to ship in December.
