Modern architecture increasingly seeks to connect homes with their natural environments, yet many designs still treat sustainability and beauty as competing priorities. Wine country residences face particular challenges, needing to honor the landscape’s agricultural heritage while incorporating contemporary living standards and environmental responsibility. The result often feels like a compromise between function and form.

What makes Michael Jantzen’s Solar Vineyard House particularly compelling is how it eliminates these trade-offs entirely. This 5,000-square-foot conceptual design creates a home that’s simultaneously a private vineyard, small-scale winery, and showcase for sustainable architecture. The structure sits within its own vineyard in California’s temperate climate, blending residential comfort with the rituals of wine-making.

The architectural form immediately catches your attention with four dramatic, arching concrete composite segments that echo the rolling hills of California wine country. Large glass sections bridge these arches, creating expansive views while maintaining the sculptural integrity of the design. Sustainably grown wood slatted pathways weave throughout the vineyard and flow up and over the house itself, serving as both circulation routes and natural shading devices.

The sustainability features feel integrated rather than added on. Four large curved solar panels mount into the south side of the structure, partially powering the home while maintaining the building’s flowing aesthetic. Natural ventilation and deep overhangs shade all glass surfaces, reducing cooling loads while creating comfortable outdoor spaces for vineyard activities and entertaining.

Of course, the environmental thinking extends to water management and material choices. Rainwater collection systems store water for both household use and vineyard irrigation, while the sustainably sourced wood pathways minimize environmental impact. The design demonstrates how eco-friendly features can enhance rather than compromise architectural beauty when thoughtfully integrated from the beginning.

The interior spaces embrace flexibility through a modular approach that feels both practical and poetic. Open-plan upper and lower levels house cylindrical modules of varying sizes, all mounted on wheels for easy reconfiguration. These modules take inspiration from winery fermentation tanks, containing everything from living spaces to wine-making equipment, food preparation areas, and storage.

That said, the real magic happens in how natural light transforms the interior throughout the day. Sunlight filters through the slatted wood panels, creating dynamic patterns that shift across floors and walls. The extensive glazing maintains constant visual connection to the vineyard, making the landscape an integral part of the living experience rather than just a view.

You’ll notice how every design decision reinforces the connection between architecture, agriculture, and sustainable living. The modular interiors adapt to different needs, from intimate family dinners to harvest celebrations, while the vineyard setting provides both beauty and purpose.

Eco friendly plant support clips tackles plastic waste

The B-Clip project, designed by Anna Maier and recognized in the 2025 Seoul Design Award, addresses a growing concern in agriculture: plastic plant support clips breaking down into microplastics. These fragments accumulate in soils, posing long-term risks to ecosystems, human health, and the environment. This concept project offers a promising and sustainable solution to tackle this waste issue in what may seem like a small problem but it has long-term effects on agriculture and waste management.

The B-Clip uses vacuum press forming technology to create a strong, weather-resistant clip from cellulose fibers. Unlike conventional plastic clips, the B-Clip is biodegradable and naturally composts at the end of the growing season. By using renewable agricultural by-products like straw, the project demonstrates how waste materials can be transformed into valuable resources. This approach not only promotes a circular economy but also highlights the potential of sustainable innovation in everyday agricultural tools.

The B-Clip stands out for more than its eco-friendly materials. A series of translucent Murano blown-glass stools color the runway set of the Bottega Veneta Summer 2026 show in Milan, with their surfaces and bodies resembling water and sea waves. Crafted by design brand 6:AM, the seats are made in a bespoke palette of ten colors, setting the scenography of the presentation and standing out against the white backdrop of the show. It is the brand’s and Maison’s way to connect traditional Venetian craft with the collection, which subtly appears in more saturated hues of the accessories.

6:Am designs and colors the seats in ten shades

 

The functional objects by design brand 6:AM are blown-glass cubes, each one unique in tone and surface detail, and the studio’s color palette of ten shades includes green, amber, clear, grey, and violet, to name a few. No shade stands out, but they gleam in harmony, even refracting the light and playing with shadows to mimic the surface of the sea and the waves of the ocean. Upon a closer look, the top of these Murano blown-glass stools at the Bottega Veneta Summer 2026 show mirrors the calmness of the sea, away from turbulence.

 

As the viewers look down, the inside, hollow and almost transparent, displays the depth of the waters, shaping the light and shadow and projecting them behind. Each cube has a square form with equal dimensions on all sides, and the outer surfaces are smooth but textured with natural marks from the glassblowing process. The top is slightly flat, allowing the cube to be used as a stool, seat, or plinth.

These seats are made of Murano glass produced on the island of Murano near Venice. Murano glass is created using techniques developed over centuries, involving molten silica mixed with oxides and minerals that produce color. For this project at the Bottega Veneta Summer 2026 show, 6:AM worked with local glassmakers who used traditional furnaces and carefully controlled the temperature and movement to achieve the look of the glass cubes. 

 

Alongside the glass seats, attendees also listen to the soundtrack produced by the British artist and director Steve McQueen. He created a sound piece called ’66–’76, a reconfiguration of two recordings: Wild Is the Wind by Nina Simone and David Bowie. The two versions were edited to overlap and function as a duet, and the artist describes his work as an aural Intrecciato, referring to the woven leather pattern that is central to Bottega Veneta’s identity.

EDIT brings “motion and emotion” into English National Ballet brand

EDIT has helped English National Ballet (ENB) refresh its brand to engage new audiences on new platforms.

The company, which recently celebrated its 75th birthday, performs a mix of classic and contemporary shows across the UK and around the world. It also runs a wide range of community programmes, “to take world-class ballet to the widest possible audience.”

There were several reasons the ENB needed to rethink its identity, explains Lisa Leigh, its director of marketing and communications.

Firstly, post-COVID, there was a change in the audiences, with 15% of the previous punters not returning. The new audience demographics are quite mixed, but Leigh says they wanted to connect in particular with the 25 to 34 age bracket.

Also coming out of the pandemic, the ENB, like many organisations, upped its digital output and needed a brand that worked better in that context. In 2023, they also appointed a new artistic director, Aaron Watkin, and needed to make sure, “the brand strategy and the artistic vision were really aligned.”

And finally, the tough economic climate has intensified pressure on anyone looking to sell tickets. “We needed to stand out, and to make sure that people had a good reason to spend their time and their money with us,” Leigh explains.

The first phase involved working with strategists at Boardroom Consulting to refine the ENB’s positioning.

“I think part of the challenge is that the word ‘ballet’ comes with its own preconceptions,” Leigh says. “So many people see ballet as a closed or confusing world. They think it’s only for a certain type of person. But English National Ballet is not like that – we’re warm, we’re welcoming, and everyone’s invited.”

That accessibility threads through ENB’s history, from its founders’ mission back in 1950, right through to initiatives like Dance for Parkinson’s, which helps people living with the disease to find joy and engagement through dance.

“It quickly became clear that English National Ballet’s founding principles were as alive and relevant today as ever,” says Boardroom Consulting partner Claire Rigby. “The opportunity was to draw these out more clearly and confidently. “

The new identity built around the idea of “opening up the possibilities of ballet” which, Leigh says, informed every aspect of the work.

For Karen Hughes, co-founder and creative director of EDIT, the first task was to clarify whether the client needed, “an evolution or a revolution, a refresh or a rebrand.”

They tested three concepts with audiences and found there were “lots of positives” with the existing brand. The challenges came around the brand system.

“It was quite limited in terms of flexibility and how it could adapt,” Hughes says. Ironically for a ballet brand, “It didn’t have that stretch.”

However the testing phase also confirmed there was room to make the brand more resonant. “It felt modern, but it perhaps didn’t connect emotionally with people,” Hughes says.

The solution was to take the previous mark – which has been likened to the pointe shoes worn by ballerinas, or a set of quotation marks – and use it more confidently. In the past it was often placed “as a logo in the corner” which obscured the ENB’s own brand, or made it look like a sponsor.

“We wanted to create a symbol that could go front and centre,” Hughes says.

The EDIT team also added a new wordmark, in Google Fonts’ Bricolage Grotesque, and the same type was chosen for the copy, due to its “fluid elements.”

This desire to mimic the dynamism of the artform also drove a renewed focus on the brand’s motion design. “It felt quite static in its previous form, so there was so much potential with the motion to add more energy,” Hughes says.

Leigh says this was a key part of the project. “If you look at the way the brand mark comes to life, it’s animated and integrated across everything we’re doing.”

The team also wanted to bring more emotion into the identity. That influenced the motion design, the art direction and photography, and even the colour palette, where different shades represent different feelings, and gradients are used to show how emotions bleed into each other.

“The key idea was to ‘feel more with English National Ballet’,” Leigh explains. “That might be passion, happiness, anger, sadness – whatever it is, you’re free to feel it with us.”

EDIT also developed a new verbal identity, which Leigh says had been under-used in the brand’s previous incarnation. The new tone of voice leans into this sense of emotion, and presents ballet as something for everybody.

“Ballet is tricky because there can be a lot of language barriers,” Hughes says. “If you don’t feel like you understand things enough, you might feel like you don’t belong there.

“So it’s not about dumbing things down, because it’s obviously very technical and professional. But we could make it more inviting for people, and remove some of those barriers that unnecessarily get in the way.”

The other balancing act was to ensure the new branding works alongside a wide variety of shows, community programmes, and other activity, all of which may have their own personalities.

“I think the challenge for performing arts generally is the tension between product and brand,” Leigh says. “You have a broad range of product, and it changes quite quickly. What you really want to do is build the relationship with the brand, to establish who we are with audiences.”

She points out that a classic production of Swan Lake evokes different feelings from a cutting-edge premier from a new choreographer, but the ENB brand needs to work across the board.

“We need to have a strong sense of identity over and above the performance itself,” she says.

“You will see the logo often sits right in the middle of the posters, which is very unusual,” Hughes adds. “But I think it’s a signal for people to have a relationship with the organisation itself, and not just a particular show.”

The new website was created by London-based agency HdK, which like EDIT and Boardroom Consulting specialises in working with cultural institutions. Leigh says the site’s more user-friendly design reflects the broader ambitions of the brand refresh.

And she says, the ENB is excited to see where they can take the new identity.

“The reaction has been really encouraging, but I think we’re just at the start,” she says. “We have a system that can be flexed in lots of different ways, and we’re still working out exactly what that might look like going forward.”

An Elegant Stool from Leather Offcuts, by Industrial Designer Friedrich Gerlach

This Lecrase Stool is by German industrial designer Friedrich Gerlach.

The form might suggest plywood, but it’s in fact made of leather offcuts from the automotive and fashion industry; the carefully-chosen folds not only give the stool its flair, but exploits the material to allow it to support itself.

“In a world where increasing consumption generates more leftover materials, I see these not as waste, but as valuable resources,” Gerlach told the Maison&Objet trade fair. “I find it exciting to work with what’s already there – designing in a way that anticipates transformation, reuse, or even disappearance.”

The stool won Gerlach a 2025 Rising Talent Award.

Amazon’s 2025 Kindle Scribe Is a Game-Changer for Digital Readers and Note-Takers

Amazon has revealed its fresh lineup of Kindle Scribes at the annual fall hardware event in New York, along with other announcements. The new devices have been reimagined from the ground up to fit the current-day requirements and iron out all the shortcomings of the previous models. The new Scribes will be available in the UK for starters, and the introduction of the first-ever color Kindle Scribe is a welcome addition. This comes as a more refined option compared to the cheaper Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition, which is suited for occasional readers who want a smaller option.

All three models come with a brush of redesign to do away with the asymmetrical chin on one side. This makes these devices look sleeker, more like a tablet-like form factor. All the variants have an 11-inch glare-free screen, which is bigger than the previous model at 10.2 inches. Even with the increase in size, the Scribes are a lot lighter at 400 grams and less thick at 5.4mm. Compare that to the ultra-thin iPhone Air, and they are still the winner.

The new Scribes come with an advanced front light system courtesy of tiny LEDs that have uniform light distribution for a paper-like look. It also helps in reducing the screen size and the bezels. To simulate the effect of writing with a pen on a paper surface, the glass has a unique texture, and the gap between the glass and the E Ink panel underneath is reduced for a good tactile feel. The page turns feel a lot smoother as there is 40 percent faster processing courtesy of the new quad-core processor and more memory at disposal. The normal Knidle Scribe comes in two variants, one has a front light system and the other misses out on it. The front light version will be available early next year for $430, while the one with light asks $500.

The most interesting of the three, the Scribe Colorsoft, comes with a larger version of the customized E Ink screen technology used in the brand’s color e-reader. You can read, write, and annotate documents with the 10 pen color options, or simply highlight text with the five different highlighter options. Those who love to draw can put the shading tool to good use, given its smoother gradients. Scribe Colorsoft comes with a display technology with soft color reproduction, unlike your phone screen. This almost feels like viewing a book, or a canvas when drawing art.

Other than that, the device has AI reading features, one of which is “Story so Far” that lets the user continue with what they were reading. The other one, called “Ask this Book” is used for highlighting passages or text to get inquisitive information on characters, or any backdrop the reader would benefit from. The Scribe comes with a week-long battery life and, most importantly, doesn’t have any distracting apps or notifications that could mar the reading experience. Kindle Scribe Colorsoft will be available starting $630 later this year.

A 3D Printer that Walks and Lays Walls

There is a fascinating type of wasp where I live called a mud dauber. These little guys are like the 3D printers of the natural world. They take individual globs of mud and, using their mandibles, shape them into layers attached to vertical surfaces in order to build cylindrical nests.

You can clearly see the “print lines” on their nests. The different colors are from different types of mud, and while adjacent nests can be made from different muds, they always go mono-mud for individual nests.

Anyway I thought of mud daubers while looking at this Charlotte robot. It was developed by two Australian firms, Crest Robotics and climate technology company Earthbuilt Technology, as a response to Australia’s housing crisis.

Like the mud dauber, Charlotte uses local materials to build. It’s hooked up to wheeled vehicle that’s loaded with sand, earth and waste products like crushed brick. The ‘bot essentially digests these, then poops out a composite material in layers to build walls.

The point of all this is that you’re not transporting construction materials to the site. “Raw materials go in. Solid walls come out. Easy,” writes Earthbuilt Technology.

“Earthbuilt® was conceived with a simple insight: the real cost and carbon of construction come from repeated industrial processing and endless transport. Our patented printer shortens the supply chain to a single, low-energy, high-speed process. Using local soil or clean waste, Earthbuilt® creates strong, durable walls without cement, firing, or manual laying.”

Earthbuilt says the robot is fast, affordable and accurate. They also envision it being used in the future to build structures on the moon.

Functioning prototypes have been built, and are reportedly on display at the currently-running International Astronautical Congress in Sydney. However, at press time we could not locate any videos of Charlotte in action.

Titaner’s Innovative Take on the Fractal Vise

In the past, it was common for a Western company to release some hot new object, then Chinese manufacturers would rush in with knock-offs. Thankfully we’re seeing a shift away from this, where Chinese manufacturers are starting to add their own innovations to improve existing products. As one example Titaner, a Chinese manufacturer of titanium tools, is taking a more Apple-like approach: Let others be the first, then take your time to design a better version of that object.

In this case, the object that’s having a moment is the fractal vise. This all started in 2021, when artist Steve J. Lindsay designed his based on a jaw he’d seen on a milling machine from the early 1900s.

Lindsay’s design went viral, and later that year product designer Chris Borge made 3D-print files of a similar design available.

Earlier this year, British tool manufacturer MetMo successfully Kickstarted their own fractal vise design, to the tune of $1.8 million.

Enter Titaner. Rather than merely knock off the designs above, the company instead decided to design the ultimate version of a fractal vise.

First off it’s on a ball joint, greatly improving the ergonomics.

Secondly, it has a feature critical for working on delicate objects: The ability to set the clamping pressure. The user dials it in via a torque mechanism, and when the vise hits the desired pressure, it audibly clicks, like a torque wrench.

Thirdly the jaws have a width capacity of nearly 4 inches.

Lastly the jaws are reversible, allowing you to hold objects from the inside out.

The tool, being made entirely out of precision-CNC-milled titanium, is well expensive, starting at $1,100. The company’s only making 1,000 units and selling them on Kickstarter. At press time the campaign had been successfully funded, with 85 units spoken for and 27 days left to pledge.
