Aghajoon Kitchen Reinterprets Vernacular Yazd Architecture

 

Aghajoon Kitchen is a permanent public facility designed to replace an informal, roofless village kitchen that had long functioned as the social hub of Khalilabad, Yazd, Iran. Serving both practical and cultural purposes, the new structure, developed by Seyed Amirhossein Sahiholnasab, accommodates communal cooking while continuing its role in religious ceremonies, weddings, and gatherings.

 

The design takes reference from Yazd’s architectural traditions and the memory of a now-demolished school adjacent to the site. Materials such as brick, mud plaster, and turquoise tiles were selected to ensure visual and cultural continuity with the surroundings. The building’s turquoise-clad axis organizes circulation while emphasizing its symbolic role as a setting for community rituals.

Seyed Amirhossein Sahiholnasab revives communal kitchen

 

Located on a narrow urban plot bordered by residential buildings and the former school, the site posed limitations for daylight and natural ventilation. Seyed Amirhossein Sahiholnasab’s architectural team addressed these constraints through cubic skylights placed on the roof and recessed brick screens on the eastern facade. The design also balanced contemporary sanitation standards with respect for local context. Integration of the structural and architectural systems enabled cost reduction of approximately 15%, while maintaining proportions consistent with regional construction practices.

 

The building is organized around a large brick-clad arch supported by a steel truss resting on short base walls. This structural strategy provides both stability and formal clarity. Turquoise tiles define the southern facade and the building’s interior spine, marking circulation points and referencing traditional ornamentation. Two cubic skylights on the roof and perforated brickwork on the eastern wall provide daylight and ventilation. Brick, plaster, and tile were used throughout, executed with local craftsmanship combined with precise detailing.

Turquoise Axis Organizes Aghajoon Communal Kitchen

 

The 22 × 11-meter site is organized along a central axis, visually reinforced with turquoise tiles and culminating in a basin for washing large pots. The project is distributed across three levels. The basement houses storage rooms, a mechanical room, restrooms, and a women’s ablution space. The ground floor features a main cooking area, restrooms, and men’s ablution space. Finally, the mezzanine organizes a rest area accessed via a turquoise-tiled stair.

 

The basement benefits from thermal mass to maintain cool conditions, while evaporative coolers positioned at the peak of the arch enhance summer comfort. Overall, the layout promotes intuitive circulation, thermal efficiency, and operational clarity, while reinforcing the site’s role as a cultural and social center.

Lascaux IV by Snøhetta, Through the Language of Dance

 

Snøhetta’s Lascaux IV, the International Centre for Parietal Art in Montignac, France, becomes the setting for a contemporary dance performance that seeks to reawaken the prehistoric imagination. Conceived by choreographer and dancer Daniel Proietto in collaboration with the Norwegian National Ballet, Know Nation, and Snøhetta, Hidden unfolds across the monumental spaces of the museum and its surrounding landscape, where the memory of cave art still lingers.

 

For Snøhetta, the project was an extension of longstanding concerns. ‘To honor the history and myths of Lascaux, we invited the Norwegian National Ballet and choreographer Daniel Proietto to interpret the spaces through dance,’ describes founding partner Kjetil Trædal Thorsen. ‘The result is a magnificent artistic performance… adding a completely new dimension to experiencing the wonder and history of Lascaux and the stories painted on its walls.’

proietto’s hidden Unfolds in the Shadows of Prehistoric Art

 

Hidden was shaped specifically for the labyrinthine architecture of Lascaux IV center, designed by the international architecture firm Snøhetta with SRA Architectes and scenographers Casson Mann. Since opening in 2016, the building has been recognized as both an immersive reconstruction of the caves discovered in 1940 and as a landmark of contemporary museography. 

 

The performance was led by Daniel Proietto and principal dancer Yolanda Correa, who moved through flickering light and shadow guided by the spectral presence of a Minotaur figure. Their choreography drew on echoes of prehistoric rites, reframing cave painting as an early cinematic act. ‘Around 17,000 years ago, humans gathered at Lascaux in reverence, not to conquer, but to carve their dreams into stone,’ Proietto reflects. ‘They understood something we are still trying to remember: that making a mark is not an act of power, but an act of belonging. Hidden honors their efforts and asks what kind of ancestors we are becoming.’

 

The work resists spectacle, positioning dance instead as an act of remembrance and presence. Correa and Proietto’s movements, accompanied by Belgian composer Jean-Paul Dessy’s score performed live by Tana Quartet, explore mortality, continuity, and the fragile threads of cultural memory. ‘Bringing dance to Lascaux IV, at the heart of prehistoric art, is a profound honor,’ notes Ingrid Lorentzen, artistic director of the Norwegian National Ballet. ‘In the meeting between the ancient and the contemporary, a deep resonance emerges.’

Porsche 960 GT RS Concept is the Spiritual Successor to the Legendary 918 Spyder

Ugur Sahin just dropped a design study that’s going to make Porsche fans lose their collective minds. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Long-Lost Chair Designs Finally Come to Life After 70 Years

The Museum of Wisconsin Art is presenting chairs that Frank Lloyd Wright never saw completed. These designs existed only as sketches and architectural fragments until 2025. After seven decades buried in archives, Wright’s unbuilt chair concepts have been reconstructed for the first time, revealing the master architect’s furniture vision that time forgot.

Frank Lloyd Wright: Modern Chair Design runs at the Museum of Wisconsin Art in West Bend from October 4, 2025 to January 25, 2026, bringing together more than forty works and newly fabricated chairs based on Wright’s archival drawings.

The reconstructions reveal technical hurdles that explain why Wright’s contemporaries couldn’t execute them. Some designs required techniques that were uncommon in furniture making of that era. Others demanded precision joinery that was difficult to achieve without contemporary tools.

Wright’s specifications often pushed the limits of available materials and techniques. His joint designs required tolerances that were nearly impossible to achieve consistently with period woodworking equipment. Modern craftsmen could execute Wright’s vision precisely because today’s tools and techniques finally match his ambitious specifications.

What seemed impossibly complex decades ago became achievable in 2025 through advances in precision machining and manufacturing.

Exhibition Details and Significance

The exhibition demonstrates how great design transcends its original time period, remaining relevant and inspiring across decades. The reconstructions bring Wright’s architectural principles to physical reality.

Brooks and Markiewicz purchased a nine-acre wooded lot in Hillsdale, placing their distinctive cube house squarely in the center of a natural clearing, two hours north of Manhattan.

Originally envisioning a larger structure, the architects faced the harsh realities of soaring construction costs and labor shortages brought on by the pandemic. The exterior presents as a perfect cube, its cedar cladding naturally weathering to blend with the surrounding forest hues. Strategic incisions in the building envelope create a dynamic interplay of orthogonal and oblique lines, establishing a dialogue between the man-made structure and its natural environment. Pac-Man on Wheels: Jake Carlini Builds a Wearable DIY Electric Motorcycle Suit

Inventor and content creator Jake Carlini has turned a damaged electric bike into a wearable motorcycle suit, one that lets him ride while lying nearly flat in a planking position. After his bike was wrecked in a crash, he salvaged key parts, namely the rear-hub motor and battery, and reconceived the system entirely. Rather than reattach the components to a conventional frame, Carlini attached the motor directly to his lower legs using painter’s stilt straps, effectively turning his legs into the drive train.

To house the heavy battery, he reinforced and modified a vest, integrating wiring and connectors into it. Steering and stability posed unusual challenges. Without a normal front fork and handlebars, Carlini built a small front rig incorporating aero bars, armrest pads, and pegs so he could shift some weight to his arms. He integrated the original throttle on a grip and preserved the digital display, routing wiring along his arms into the vest.

The outcome looks like a hybrid of suit and machine, a kind of exoskeleton with wires, straps, and glowing components. In test runs, the suit reached speeds over 20 mph, powered by the motor on his legs, while balance depended entirely on his core engagement and the precision of the straps. The build leans heavily on repurposed parts: the motor, battery, throttle, display, as well as everyday items such as straps, screws, glue, and fabric.

The significance of this project lies not just in its novelty but in how it blurs the boundary between clothing and vehicle. The wearer literally becomes the ride rather than riding a separate machine. It’s not yet a practical or mass-market solution, but rather a daring experiment in personal mobility and creative reuse. While suited more for demonstration and exploration than daily commuting, the project sparks questions about how we define vehicles, wearable tech, and the future of transport.

In creating this suit, Carlini leaned heavily on ingenuity and resourcefulness. He addressed engineering hurdles of weight distribution, control, and integration within a human-body interface. Safety is one concern that pops up the first time you lay your eyes on this wearable bike. Driving with this on the crowded city streets or the highway is no less than a risky proposition with crazy motorists out there. Though far from a polished product, it stands as proof of concept that mobility might be reimagined in radically intimate, body-centric forms. In an age of evolving wearables and electric mobility, this wearable electric motorcycle suit invites us to consider what comes next.

This LEGO Tow Mater Build Will Make Even Lightning McQueen Jealous

I’ll admit it – I’m a sucker for LEGO creations that nail character design, and this Tow Mater MOC by besbasdesign absolutely crushes it. Spotted recently on Rebrickable, this build takes the lovable, rusty tow truck from Disney Pixar’s Cars and translates him into brick form with uncanny accuracy. The 413-piece creation captures everything that makes Mater instantly recognizable, from his patchwork body panels to that signature goofy grin with the prominent buck teeth. What’s particularly impressive is how the designer managed to maintain the cartoonish proportions while still creating a structurally sound model that fits perfectly alongside the upcoming Lightning McQueen set (77255) launching in January 2026.

If you’ve ever tried building vehicle MOCs at this scale, you know capturing personality ranks among the hardest challenges. Cars characters present a unique problem since their entire personality lives in the vehicle itself. Besbasdesign solves this brilliantly with custom stickers (soon available from brickstickershop) that transform the windshield into Mater’s expressive eyes and add authentic “Tow Mater” signage to the doors. The combination of those stickers with the expertly crafted physical form creates a build that feels pulled straight from Radiator Springs. The build even includes the A-113 Easter egg on the license plate, a detail hardcore Pixar fans will appreciate.

The color work on this MOC is just technically flawless. I’ve seen countless attempts at replicating Mater’s weathered appearance, but most builders either go too uniform or too chaotic. This version nails the balance with strategic placement of different brown tones interspersed with blue panels that mimic Mater’s mismatched, salvaged look. The designer understands that Mater isn’t randomly rusty; his design tells the story of a truck that’s been pieced together over decades of service. The model measures approximately 8.0 × 18.8 × 9.3 centimeters (or about 3.2 × 7.4 × 3.7 inches), making it substantial enough for display while remaining compatible with Speed Champions scale vehicles.

Technical execution is top notch, particularly in the functional tow assembly. Unlike many LEGO tow trucks where the mechanism is purely decorative, this one features a working hook attached to a pivoting arm. The assembly uses gray Technic beams and connectors to create a sturdy rig that maintains the cartoon aesthetic without sacrificing functionality. The consistent use of SNOT (studs not on top) techniques around the front end creates the rounded shaping essential to Mater’s friendly face. Clever parts usage extends to the roof-mounted warning lights, built from transparent orange elements rather than relying solely on stickers.

The instructions for this MOC cost €6.50 on Rebrickable, which feels like a bargain considering the quality of the design and the PDF documentation. The built-in parts finder on Rebrickable streamlines the process of sourcing the 413 elements needed. You could technically build this using bricks from approximately 3-4 mid-sized LEGO sets, though specialty elements like the wheels and some of the curved pieces might require specific hunting. The investment yields a display piece that achieves something official LEGO Cars sets have struggled with, personality and screen accuracy at a reasonable scale. Now I’m just wondering if besbasdesign has plans for the rest of Radiator Springs. A Sally Carrera or Doc Hudson built to this standard would certainly find a spot on my shelf next to Mater.

Keil Space: A Contemporary Temple of Sculpture and Light

 

Located in Florence, Keil Space is an art and architectural project developed by the Keil Foundation and artist Sam Keil. The space functions as a contemporary interpretation of a temple, integrating architecture, sculpture, and sensory design into an environment aimed at fostering contemplation and heightened perception.

 

Keil Space is conceived as both a sculptural work and a sequence of interconnected rooms. The design employs darkened surfaces, controlled cuts of light, and metallic textures reminiscent of oxidized bronze. Spatial rhythm is emphasized through fluid transitions rather than linear circulation, giving each room a distinct character shaped by geometry, light, and acoustics. Scents and tonal variations are also incorporated, creating an environment that operates as a multisensory composition.

 

At the core of the project is a collection of bronze works by Sam Keil, presented across three ‘Generations.’

First Generation emphasizes form, movement, and vitality; Second Generation explores light and shadow as active sculptural elements; and New Generation introduces imagery connected to galaxies, biodiversity, and organic systems. These series are arranged to create a progression that guides visitors through varying perceptual and emotional states, transforming the building into an architectural landscape of shifting experiences.

Keil Space aligns itself with a longstanding tradition of architecture designed for spiritual or contemplative use. While ancient monuments employed alignments, symbolic forms, and material permanence to connect with the cosmos, Keil Space takes a contemporary approach, focusing on abstraction, sensory perception, and psychological effect. The building functions as a neutral but active container, where art and architecture merge to encourage inward reflection.

 

To evaluate its effect on visitors, Keil Space collaborated with QDAS, a UK-based qualitative research organization. Over 750 participants between the ages of 8 and 85 were interviewed. Findings indicated consistent outcomes, including sharpened sensory perception, increased awareness of subtle details, and a heightened sense of connection with surroundings. The study positioned the space as an environment that can support introspection and self-discovery.

 

Keil Space demonstrates how architecture can extend beyond utility and aesthetics to explore questions of spirituality and human psychology. By prioritizing experience over doctrine, artist Sam Keil proposes a model for secular yet contemplative space. The project situates architecture as a medium capable of connecting individuals with broader notions of time, perception, and the infinite.

Google Japan introduces Gboard Dial Version, a rotary-phone-inspired keyboard with multiple turntable dials. A successor to the 2024 double-sided and twister keyboard, the typing device moves away from pressing keys and instead rotates the dial to choose the keys. The Gboard Dial Edition has a main circular dial with a keyhole for finger placement. The user inserts a finger and rotates the dial to select and input characters. 

 

The dial is divided into three stacked layers, reducing the overall size of the device while still allowing for full character coverage. A single rotation cycle can be faster than pressing across a wide surface of keys, and the layering also allows parallel inputs. Function keys and cursor keys are placed on smaller independent dials around the main dial, so users can operate multiple rotary controls depending on the task. The enter key and number keys are designed as dedicated dials that can be turned separately.

Google Japan’s Gboard Dial Edition draws influence from rotary phones, which used circular motion for dialing numbers. The buzzing sound produced during rotation is a deliberate reference to the mechanical feedback of those devices, and the three-layer dial system adapts this influence by compressing a large number of inputs into a smaller physical space. The design also references the 101-key standard keyboard, a format introduced in the 1980s. The release date of October 1 was chosen to connect the 101 layout with the 10/1 calendar date. In this way, the Dial Edition links both the rotary past of communication devices and the standardization of modern typing.

 

The Gboard team from Google Japan has confirmed that the Dial Edition inspired by rotary phones will not be sold commercially. Instead, it has been released as an open-source blueprint, allowing anyone with the tools and materials to build a version themselves. The files include technical drawings, dial schematics, and assembly steps, and the open-source approach continues the experimental nature of the Gboard project. Each past version has tested new forms of typing, not necessarily as mass-market products but to explore what input devices can become.
