This Bronx Community Center Folds Like Origami to Blend Three Spaces Seamlessly

Xuechen Chen’s “The Folding Boat Community Center” won an A’ Design Award in the Idea and Conceptual Design category, and while award circuits tend to celebrate projects that look good in renders, this 18,000 square foot proposal for the Harlem River shore actually wrestles with something substantive. The brief calls for a rowing facility serving a community college, a small library, and a sport rowing museum under one roof. These programs have fundamentally incompatible spatial requirements, which makes the architectural problem more interesting than the typical community center commission that defaults to generic multi-purpose rooms.

Chen’s solution uses a folded metal roof that mimics the site’s varied topography while organizing interior volumes. The site sits on slopes along the waterfront, positioned between historical and modern Bronx districts. Rather than fighting that terrain or treating it as a constraint, the folded geometry echoes those slopes and simultaneously blends walls into ceilings to define distinct programmatic zones. Rowing facilities need height and clear circulation for equipment. Libraries need intimacy and acoustic separation. Museums need flexible display areas and controlled lighting. The fold creates spatial differentiation without fragmenting the building into disconnected boxes. The roof modulates as it moves through the structure, generating ceiling heights and spatial qualities tuned to each program’s specific demands.

The project description references exploration of folding as an architectural element that enhances aesthetics, spatial experience, and programmatic functionality simultaneously, which suggests the geometry derives from testing rather than intuition.

Chen’s folded geometry establishes its own architectural language while the material palette and massing engage existing urban patterns without resorting to mimicry or opposition. The unbuilt status means this exists as proposal rather than performance data, which always introduces uncertainty about how theory translates to construction. Folded metal roofs can channel water effectively or create wind tunnel effects depending on how carefully angles account for drainage and prevailing conditions. Glass at waterfront locations needs detailing that prevents condensation and thermal bridging. Wood panels in humid environments need ventilation strategies. Someone Hollowed Out a Duracell Battery and Fit a Surprisingly Good Bluetooth Speaker Inside

I’ve seen plenty of DIY electronics projects that make you go “wtf, why” (this Bluetooth speaker in a walnut comes to mind) but this battery-to-Bluetooth-speaker conversion sits in a completely different category. Someone actually spent two weeks gutting a battery casing, drilling 60 precision sound holes, and cramming a full Bluetooth speaker setup inside what used to house alkaline cells. The kicker? It actually sounds good. Like, surprisingly good for something that began life as a Duracell knockoff with a pink bunny on the wrapper.

Before we get into the technical gymnastics here, let’s appreciate the sheer absurdity of the starting point. This maker didn’t just crack open the battery and start drilling. They built a makeshift fan out of a toy car motor, some blue electrical tape, and a propeller to safely drain the thing over three days. Three full days of waiting for a janky desk fan to suck the last electrons out of a battery so they could avoid turning their workspace into a lithium fire hazard. That’s either extreme patience or mild insanity, and honestly, I respect both.

The disassembly process alone is wild. They started with thin drill bits, worked up to thicker ones, then had to break out a rotary tool with high carbon steel bits because apparently battery casings are tougher than anyone expects. There’s this moment where they wrap the whole thing in tape to catch metal fragments, put on a rubber glove like they’re defusing a bomb, and start yanking out the battery core with pliers. Then they’re scraping out the guts with a popsicle stick. A popsicle stick! The juxtaposition of power tools and wooden sticks is somehow perfect. After excavating all the alkaline nastiness inside, they cleaned everything with alcohol like they were prepping for surgery.

Here’s where it gets legitimately impressive though. The sound holes could’ve been a disaster. Their first attempt with a ruler looked terrible, so instead of accepting wonky holes, they 3D printed a custom drilling template with 60 perfectly aligned holes and reinforced guiding channels to lock the drill bit in place. One millimeter of drift would mean starting over, so they zip-tied and hot-glued this template down like their life depended on it. When it came off, those holes were lined up in perfect rows. That’s the kind of problem-solving that separates people who tinker from people who actually engineer solutions. You physically cannot achieve that precision by hand.

The electronics work is where most hobbyist projects die, but this one survived. Six dollar Bluetooth circuit board, tiny speaker, mini battery, push button, LEDs for power and charging indicators. Sounds simple until you’re trying to desolder 1mm LEDs with a soldering iron tip so massive you can barely see what you’re doing. They literally describe it as “nearly impossible to make out what was happening” with their naked eyes. Yet somehow those microscopic components got wired up without burning anything out. The layout planning involved printing a Photoshop design onto masking tape to create a sticky template for drilling button and port holes. That’s the kind of creative workflow hack you develop after years of building stuff and learning what actually works.

Final assembly required UV-curing glue (the dental filling type), a 3D-printed speaker sleeve, and strategic decisions about not permanently bonding everything so future repairs stay possible. The bottom cover snaps on like the original battery cap. Two weeks of work produced a Bluetooth speaker that fits in your palm and actually sounds good. The metal casing could’ve made it sound terrible, but the acoustics somehow worked out. Would I do this myself? Probably not. Do I respect the hell out of someone who spent 72 hours draining a battery with a homemade fan just to start this journey? Absolutely.

Participatory Design revives Community Park in Neiva

 

Community Park Veinte de Mayo, designed by Taller Ciudad Portátil, is located in the Veinte de Mayo neighborhood in Neiva, Colombia. The project occupies a 94 sqm triangular plot that had previously been abandoned and associated with insecurity and neglect. Through a process of participatory design and collective construction, the site was transformed into a compact public space that addresses the neighborhood’s limited access to communal areas, with less than 4% coverage, while fostering social interaction and environmental resilience.

 

The park’s geometry defines its spatial and organizational logic. The triangular form guided the distribution of hard and green surfaces, urban furniture, and structural elements such as columns and a pergola. The resulting composition balances 50% permeable green surfaces with 50% hardscape, integrating planters with native, low-water-consumption vegetation. With limited financial resources, construction was achieved through community self-management. More than fifteen local families participated in collective building sessions, contributing labor, materials, and time. The use of recycled and donated elements shaped both the structure and its identity. This process not only enabled construction within budget constraints but also reinforced community ownership of the space.

Urban Regeneration utilizes Low-Impact Construction

 

Material selection reflects a circular and low-impact approach. Concrete with recycled aggregates, reclaimed pine wood, and metal profiles were used for structure and furnishings. Autonomous solar lighting was installed to ensure energy efficiency and nighttime usability. The pergola, elevated to 2.6 meters and designed with segmented elements, enhances shade and ventilation, improving thermal comfort under Neiva’s warm climate. Ten cubic volumes emerge from the ground plane, five serving as structural supports and five functioning as urban furniture, including benches and chess tables. Architects at Taller Ciudad Portátil utilized color as a unifying element throughout the project. A collectively chosen palette of reds, yellows, whites, and blacks was applied to floors, columns, and a community mural, reinforcing neighborhood identity and visual coherence.

 

Beyond its physical construction, the project demonstrates the capacity of participatory architecture to improve urban and social conditions simultaneously. The park increased public space availability, introduced vegetation that enhances microclimate conditions, and reactivated community engagement. Within its small footprint, Community Park Veinte de Mayo illustrates how collaborative design and circular construction methods can generate lasting social, spatial, and environmental value.

Crydal Scroll Clock Reimagines Time as Flowing Light Art

Timepieces have evolved far beyond their basic function of telling time, with many designers seeking to create objects that transform our relationship with temporal experience. The challenge lies in creating clocks that feel both functional and artistic, offering something more meaningful than just digits on a screen. Modern interiors increasingly demand objects that serve as conversation pieces while maintaining their essential utility.

The Crydal Scroll Clock stands out by reimagining time as a flowing, kinetic experience rather than static numbers. This handcrafted, limited-edition timepiece transforms the act of checking time into something almost meditative, using 2,704 individually controlled RGB LEDs to create the impression that time itself is scrolling endlessly forward through space.

The One Piece Keycap Your Mechanical Keyboard Has Been Waiting For

So here’s the thing about One Piece merch: most of it is either mass-produced plastic junk or overpriced statues that take up half your shelf space. But every so often, something slips through the cracks that actually respects the source material while doing something fresh. Enter Dwarf Factory’s Portgas D. Ace artisan keycap, a piece so ridiculously detailed it feels like someone shrunk down Oda’s sketchbook and trapped it in resin. This isn’t just another keycap; it’s a micro-diorama of Ace’s fiery defiance, complete with swirling flames, a smirk that screams “I don’t care if Akainu’s here,” and enough fan service to make even the most jaded keyboard enthusiast pause their paycheck direct deposit. And yes, it’s compatible with Cherry MX switches, because what’s the point of looking this good if it can’t even sit on your ESC key?

The Ace keycap drops at a time when artisan keycaps are stuck in a weird limbo between functional tech and collectible art. Dwarf Factory, though, seems to have cracked the code by leaning hard into the “art” part.
