The Gare de Mons has opened in Belgium, marking the culmination of nearly two decades of design and construction led by Santiago Calatrava. Circle Stars Creates a Reflective Geometry in a Historic Courtyard

 

Lyon-based artist Cyril Lancelin continues his exploration of immersive geometric forms with Circle Stars, a monumental inflatable sculpture. Installed in the historic courtyard of Étrépagny’s media library in northern France, the work was presented as part of Spot, a group exhibition organized by the Department of Eure for the European Heritage Days.

 

The installation forms a giant three-dimensional constellation, composed of tubular, star-shaped loops that interlock to create a circular, airy volume. The reflective silver skin amplifies the play of daylight and mirrors the surrounding architecture, stone arcades, pitched roofs, and the sky, dissolving the boundary between the artwork and its context. Despite the popularity of traditional tape measures, their design is pretty much stuck in the past. The flimsy metal strips that constantly snap back at you are a nightmare for anyone trying to measure alone, and the cheap plastic housing often makes them look rather tacky. That hasn’t stopped manufacturers from churning out the same basic design for decades, with laser versions offering only marginal improvements while struggling with reflective surfaces and poor lighting conditions.

And, of course, there’s no shortage of attempts to reinvent the measuring tool, like this Tape-X concept, which is both impressive and a tad futuristic. Ditching the plain utilitarian colors commonly used by classic tape measures, this LiDAR-powered device embodies what modern tech gadgets are best known for: sleek minimalism. Delightfully sculpted and mouth-watering in its automotive-inspired design, this concept definitely looks like you’re holding the future of measuring in your hands. It’s definitely quite a sight, though it might also be a hazard for professionals who wouldn’t know how to put it down.

Their tendency to snap back, two-handed operation requirements, and flimsy construction delight absolutely no one. You can see these clunky devices almost everywhere building happens, and there is almost no one who doesn’t have a horror story about them, even if few are actually familiar with better alternatives that could solve their problems.

As if trying to remind people that measuring doesn’t have to be painful, this Tape-X concept brings together advanced LiDAR technology in a sleek device that looks almost as if it were made from the very same materials as premium cars. The unibody design features anodized aluminum construction, while the metallic finish sports that distinctive dark aesthetic with subtle red accents for everyone to see. The housing sports a seamless gradient that transitions from matte to glossy surfaces, with shades of metallic finish for the top and bottom surfaces.
