Casio Revives Classic Watch With Back to the Future-Inspired CA-500WEBF-1A

On October 21, ‘Back to the Future’ completes 40 years since its release. To mark the occasion, Casio is tying up with the film’s franchise, Universal Products & Experiences, to reimagine the classic Casio CA-500 with the theme of Back to the Future at the forefront. The retro-futuristic timepiece is the CA-500WEBF-1A, which Casio defines is born from the spirit of the movie.

The new collaborative model is based on the best seller of the 1980s. It was the same calculator watch Michael J. Fox (Marty McFly – the protagonist – in the film trilogy) wore in the first Back to the Future movie, released in 1984. In the subsequent parts, the wearable was upgraded to the Casio CA53W. Now, the special edition anniversary model of the watch, designed through Marty’s lens, is provided with instantly recognizable time-travel motifs from the flick.

The Casio CA-500WEBF-1A is the classic calculator watch with the same features, of course. It wears a similar eight-digit calculator, stopwatch, alarm, and calendar function. Like the CA-500, this is also water-resistant and features a long-lasting battery. But the difference lies in the visual appearance, which sees the classic watch transformed into a miniature DeLorean-inspired time machine with a polished silver case.

Engineered specifically for fans and collectors, Casio CA-500WEBF is scheduled to launch on October 21 for an asking price of $114.90. The themed watch features a face inspired by the DeLorean time machine itself. It features the distinctive taillights and OUTATIME license plates and you’ll find different colors around the nostalgic push-button controls suggestive of the film’s time circuits, which display destination date and time.

The inspiration is not just limited to the watch face; it’s also apparent on the caseback and the watch strap. The caseback of the Casio CA-500WEBF-1A is engraved with the flux capacitor, and the strap buckle carries the Back to the Future logo. Japan Just Built a Glowing Pavilion Shaped Like a 400M-Year-Old Shell

There’s something magical about watching an ancient fossil come to life as a building. That’s exactly what happens when you encounter the Pasona Natureverse Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, where local architecture studio The Design Labo has created something truly extraordinary.

The shell of a prehistoric marine mollusc informed the spiral shape of this remarkable pavilion, designed for staffing company Pasona Group. Picture this: a 43-meter-wide structure that looks like a giant ammonite shell gracefully unfurled on the ground, accompanied by a smaller conch-like companion crowned with a sculpture of cartoon character NEO Astro Boy.

The architects didn’t just borrow the shape; they captured the very essence of these prehistoric marine creatures. CEO Satoshi Itasaka explains the deeper meaning beautifully: “Coiled shells have changed little for roughly 400 million years. Having survived repeated mass extinctions without being eliminated, they may represent a ‘completed form’ of life.” Since the Expo’s theme is life, they adopted the coiled shell as its symbol and conceived a pavilion where visitors can experience the connection between humans and nature and the continuity of life. It’s not just about creating a striking visual; it’s about storytelling through architecture that spans geological time.

What makes this pavilion truly special is how it works with nature rather than against it. The building features an ingenious water-based cooling system that coats the skin of the structure in a thin film of water to reduce the need for air conditioning. The spiral form acts as a means of collecting and reusing both this water and rainwater, which is recirculated as grey water throughout the building. The interior journey is equally thoughtful. The pavilion comprises two shell-shaped structures containing a series of interactive exhibition spaces that explore physical, mental and social health. Visitors spiral through three distinct zones titled History of Life, Body and Mind/Bonds, each containing a range of interactive and digital displays.

Among the fascinating exhibits is a tree-shaped sculpture that depicts the history of evolution and a lab-grown heart created through biomaterials and bioengineering. “Within this grand volume, visitors encounter dynamic moving LED boxes, a zone where they can see a heart created from iPS cells, and an area offering a glimpse into the world of soil microorganisms,” Itasaka explains, describing content that combines surprise with learning.

But here’s where the story gets even better. This isn’t just a temporary exhibition building destined for demolition. The 43-meter-wide pavilion is designed to be easily demountable, created using a ball-jointed steel structure over which a synthetic white membrane has been stretched. After the expo, it will be permanently relocated to Awaji Island to serve as a cultural center, giving the building a meaningful second life.

The pavilion transforms dramatically after dark, when strips of color-changing lighting along the shell’s ridges illuminate the structure, enhanced by projected light effects. It becomes a glowing beacon that looks almost alive, pulsing with soft light that makes the spiral form even more mesmerizing. What strikes me most about this project is how it demonstrates that sustainable design doesn’t have to be boring or purely functional. The disused building, which had been on Historic England’s ‘Heritage at Risk’ register due to fire damage, was sensitively restored by Hugh Broughton Architects using innovative material, and employing local skills and labour, to preserve its exterior and retain original features.

 

‘The former church’s new multi-faceted role as a community facility hosting a co-working space, café, public exhibition areas and an events venue has breathed new life into the community and Sheerness as a whole.’

‘Like many conservation projects, appreciating the achievement requires some investigation. The shape of the tower, the clock faces and the sounds of the bells are mostly appreciated from a distance, as a dominant presence within one of the world’s most recognisable skylines. The jury’s inspection was carried out from within, after entering through a very modest door to one side of the main thoroughfare of MPs and parliamentary staff going about their business.

 

‘Work led by Purcell at the lower levels included extensive stone repairs, the refurbishment of various interior rooms for exhibitions and admin, and the clever insertion of a passenger lift which must be a welcome addition to the clock engineers and tour guides.’

This Smart Ring Has a Flexible Screen That Wraps Around Your Finger

Wearable technology keeps getting smaller, but most devices still force you to look somewhere else for information. Smart rings collect tons of health data, then make you pull out your phone to see what they learned. Smartwatches put displays on your wrist, but that still requires lifting your arm and focusing attention away from whatever you’re doing.

VisRing flips this approach by wrapping a flexible OLED display directly around your finger, creating the ultimate ambient information device. This research prototype from academic researchers explores what happens when your ring becomes a tiny dashboard that’s always visible, always accessible, and never more than a glance away.

The technical achievement is genuinely impressive for something so small. The flexible OLED display measures just 160 x 32 pixels but wraps 270 to 360 degrees around the ring, maximizing screen real estate without making the device unwearable. At 6.6 grams, it weighs about the same as a traditional wedding band while packing in a microcontroller, Bluetooth module, battery, and touch sensors.

VisRing specializes in what researchers call “nano visualizations” – tiny graphics that distill complex information into instantly readable formats. Heart rate becomes a simple pulse animation, step count appears as a progress bar, and notifications flash as brief icons. The goal is ambient awareness rather than detailed analysis, giving you just enough information to stay informed without getting overwhelmed.

Touch gestures on the curved display allow basic navigation and interaction, though the tiny surface area makes precision challenging. Users can swipe through different data views, tap to acknowledge notifications, or select simple options. The interface prioritizes glanceable information over complex interactions that would be frustrating on such a small screen.

A twelve-person user study revealed both the promise and the challenges of finger-worn displays. Participants found the ring comfortable and socially acceptable, appreciating the discretion and immediacy of having information literally at their fingertips. The wraparound display felt natural, and the visualizations were surprisingly readable despite the tiny size.

However, the study also highlighted significant design challenges that any commercial version would need to address. Battery life becomes a constant concern when powering a display this small. Accidental touches happened frequently, especially during hand washing or typing. The curved screen surface makes certain viewing angles difficult, and bright sunlight renders the display nearly invisible.

Durability emerges as another major hurdle. Flexible OLED displays are inherently more fragile than traditional ring materials, making the device vulnerable to scratches, water damage, and the general abuse that hands endure daily. The complexity of cramming electronics into a ring form also raises questions about repairability and long-term reliability.

VisRing represents a fascinating exploration of how small wearable displays can become while remaining useful.
