On the edge of Bolzano, Italy a new neighborhood designed by NOA is set to take shape. Located within the South Tyrolean landscape, Renneria explores a model of development based on agricultural continuity and everyday livability. The 13-hectare site in Pineta di Laives — named after 14th-century farmstead Maso Renner — embodies respect for history and contemporary ambition.

 

Promoted by the Gazzini real estate group, the project transforms a formerly agricultural area bordered by existing settlements and infrastructure. It offers a considered response to one of the region’s most urgent challenges: the need for sustainable housing growth.

 

Renneria’s location makes it naturally suited to accommodate a new district,’ explain Luca and Matteo Gazzini.Bordering a settlement, an artisan district, and an arterial road, it already belongs to an urbanized fabric. Renneria harmoniously completes this development.’

NOA’s Renneria masterplan introduces around 800 residential units within a system that integrates housing, workspaces, education, and leisure. The architects‘ masterplan reflects the studio’s belief in functional proximity — a model where services are within reach, and movement occurs on foot, by bicycle, or public transport. Streets become linear gardens, courtyards encourage interaction, and the organization mimics a compact village.

 

Four words guided our vision: residential, cultural, communal, and collaborative,’ says Lukas Rungger, NOA’s founder and project architect.Residential, because we offer diverse and inclusive housing typologies. The Renneria masterplan by NOA is centered around agriculture. Productive landscapes including urban gardens, orchards, and green roofs extend the legacy of Maso Renner while shaping new forms of social life. They function as local food systems and educational spaces where people can gather.

 

Renneria will host a one-of-a-kind agricultural school, a true open-air laboratory,’ add the Gazzini brothers.The 70,000 square meters of greenery, fruit trees, herbs, and biotopes will become an integral part of the educational path, transforming the neighborhood into a distributed classroom.’

 

This greenery unfolds through varying topographies. To the west, a linear park buffers the traffic corridor while offering a shaded pedestrian and cycling route. Green corridors radiate outward, connecting to the panoramic Seit viewpoint, where a new belvedere will frame views across the valley and the Dolomites.

The neighborhood’s public life is organized between on three squares. ‘They are designed for social interaction, safety, and urban vibrancy,’ explains Andrea Dal Negro, architect at NOA.Through fountains, trees, and paving variations, these spaces act as outdoor living rooms, active throughout the year.

 

Each square establishes a distinct character: the southern one for markets, the central one for cafés and shops, and the northern one for education, with student housing and workshops interwoven with play and learning.

 

Mobility follows a clear hierarchy. A ring road borders the site, with underground parking at key points. Inside, streets prioritize greenery and slow movement. Pedestrian and cycling paths define the internal grid, reinforced by three kilometers of bike lanes. Of course, the absence of traffic enhances air quality and reduces noise pollution.

Architecturally, Renneria evolves from the terrain itself. NOA’s concept of ‘extruding the landscape‘ transforms contour lines into built form. Buildings rise gently with the slope, mediating between the city and the surrounding countryside.

 

Facades are clad in timber slats — horizontal for residential volumes, vertical for civic buildings — creating a quiet interplay of texture and rhythm beneath the Dolomite light. Green roofs extend this dialogue, functioning as communal gardens and energy buffers.

 

The buildings vary in height to preserve panoramic views and maximize natural light and ventilation,‘ says Dal Negro.For public structures on sloping ground, entrances appear on multiple levels, producing layered, engaging spaces.

You know fashion has officially lost the plot when a grocery store teams up with Beyoncé’s designer to create a jacket that looks like a baked potato. And honestly? I’m here for it. Supermarket chain Aldi has teamed up with London fashion brand Agro Studio to create a puffer coat that resembles a giant baked potato. Yes, you read that correctly. The same Aldi where you sprint through the checkout line trying to bag your groceries faster than the cashier can scan them. The same Agro Studio that has crafted custom looks for global icons like Beyoncé and Lady Gaga. Together, they’ve birthed what might be the most delightfully absurd piece of wearable art this autumn.

Aldi’s Chief Commercial Officer Julie Ashfield leaned into the pun game hard, declaring that “Enjoying a jacket potato in Aldi’s new Jacket Potato Jacket is sure to be a mash made in heaven.” This is the kind of dad joke energy that somehow works in 2025. I can’t stop laughing at this hilarious 3D Printed PS5 Controller Stand

Anthropomorphism is the ability to see a face in anything. Whether it’s seeing Jesus on a grilled cheese sandwich, or just seeing faces in cars by looking at their headlights as eyes. It’s fairly common for humans to look for faces – we developed this pattern-matching ability to recognize predators in the wild… now we’re using it to create the funniest PS5 controller stands ever.

The ‘Face’ as PRINTMOTION calls it, is a fairly simple stand that turns your PS5 into an odd face, with the joypads becoming eyes and the hand grips on the side being the world’s silliest pairs of pigtails. I honestly don’t know what makes this particular design so funny, but it’s probably the juxtaposition of something as advanced as a PlayStation controller against something as silly as a fairly blank face staring at you with absolutely zero thought behind those eyes.

The stand is currently available as a 3D printable file on CULTS3D for a low price of $4.39. That way, you buy the stand and print as many of it as you want. Pretty cheap if you ask me. You can choose your own color, material, or even optimize the stand to have a pass-through cable for charging, a nosering, or a moustache. Something to make the ‘face’ look like it has a little gravitas. For now, it just looks like a dude wearing the silliest pair of glasses along with pigtails on either side. I just can’t take it seriously.

Is it me, though? Or do you find the stand odd too? The photo above literally makes it look like a Victorian-era maid, with her bonnet on her head. Those tiny beady eyes feel insect-like. It’s weirdly Lovecraftian. Maybe there’s a market for this, I don’t know. I would personally modify this thing to look a little more self aware. Maybe a cyberpunk face mask, maybe the tongue sticking out. Anything but this!

These Egg Carton Sneakers Are Ridiculous (And Kind of Genius)

Look, I’ll be honest with you. When I first saw Kibardin Design’s Egg Box Sneakers, a conceptual project that turns recycled egg cartons into actual footwear, my first thought was: someone’s taking this whole sustainability thing a little too far. My second thought? I kind of want a pair.

Before you start envisioning yourself strutting down the street in shoes made from last Sunday’s brunch leftovers, let me clarify. These aren’t meant for your morning jog or grocery store runs. Each pair is handcrafted entirely from recycled egg cartons, transforming 100% packaging waste into the recognizable silhouette of contemporary footwear. Think of them more as wearable art that asks an important question: what if our trash could be this cool?

XAARCHIVE shapes Tattoo Studio as Industrial ‘Anti-Hospital’ Space

 

BLOK, a tattoo studio designed by XAARCHIVE Studio in Badalona, Barcelona, reexamines the spatial and aesthetic qualities of clinical environments. Conceived under the concept ‘The Anti-Hospital: Rethinking Sterile Spaces,’ the project translates the visual language of medical precision into an industrial context.

 

The 80-sqm warehouse conversion employs polished concrete, locally sourced stainless steel, and handcrafted PVC curtains to define a flexible interior that shifts between transparency and opacity. The existing ceiling structure was exposed to reveal its original framework, while linear LED fixtures accentuate the geometry of the space and introduce a controlled, uniform illumination. The studio accommodates up to four artists simultaneously within a modular plan that supports multiple configurations. Mobile partitions and adjustable lighting systems enable the workspace to adapt to various functions, from tattooing to exhibition and consultation.

Fabrication and material sourcing were carried out locally in Badalona and the surrounding metropolitan area, reinforcing the project’s commitment to regional production. Central to the space is the Canova Table, a custom piece designed by XAARCHIVE Studio through 3D scanning and binary encoding. This element extends the studio’s research into the intersections of data, materiality, and digital precision.

 

BLOK functions as a hybrid environment, part workshop, part laboratory, and part gallery, where architecture operates as a tool for examining the relationship between care, craft, and the human body. The project presents a systematic, locally grounded approach to spatial design that balances technical rigor with adaptability.

DIYer builds world’s smallest FPV drone capable of stable flight

What you are seeing here could be the smallest FPV quadcopter drone on the planet, measuring just 22.3 millimeters. That is comparable to the width of a coin, making the thing really tiny. The challenges in creating such a small drone are incomprehensible, right from aerodynamics to fitting the complex electronics inside a small frame. That’s the reason this flying machine ditches the landing gear and shielding.

Created by Hoarder Sam, a YouTuber who’s a DIY engineer, the microdrone brings the capabilities of a commercial 65-millimeter model inside a housing that’s one-third the size. You can literally fit it inside a Pringles without anyone even assuming. According to the DIYer, making anything smaller than 22 mm is currently not feasible, as the drone would be unstable in flight, have degraded efficiency, and would be hard to control. As a matter of fact, the PFV community deems 65 mm as the smallest practical size for flight, which in itself is an achievement for this DIY quadcopter.

By adopting the right design approach, Hoarder managed to overcome all challenges and prove the community wrong with the world’s smallest FPV drone. It all started with the teardown of BetaFPV Air65 drone, which is regarded as one of the most compact FPV drones out there. He salvaged the brushless motor system, integrated a 5.8 GHz analog video transmitter, a high-precision ICM42688P gyroscope, and the STM32 G473 microcontroller. For such a miniature size, the body of the quadcopter needed to be durable and millimeter-precise. The best option is obviously a custom 3D-printed frame that manages to fit the mini electronics in a compressed layout.

For the frame, he employed the Bambu Lab A1 Mini desktop 3D printer to achieve the finer details with the 0.12-millimeter layer resolution. This helped eliminate overhangs and bridges, which is vital in achieving the intended small size without compromising the functionality. Tinkering around with the placement of the electronics meant the firmware had to be updated as well, since the current configuration is not calibrated for the new positioning of the flight control components. Sam went for the Betaflight Configurator software to fix this by rewriting the control parameters and tweaking the flight stability. After performing numerous flight tests and calibration, the drone took stable flight as intended.

The overall weight of the quadcopter is kept down to 25 grams, which helps in power efficiency and controlled maneuverability. That’s a feat in itself, considering the flying craft has a small camera and teeny little battery. The aircraft manages a flight time of under three minutes, which is impressive considering it falls just 30 seconds short of the larger counterpart. Landing and take-off are a bit stressful as the drone is vulnerable to damage, given it has no protection for the propellers.

3D Printing Just Built a Shelter in -30°C Desert Heat

Picture this: you’re a volunteer in the middle of Inner Mongolia’s Tengger Desert, planting trees under a relentless sun in temperatures that can swing from 45 degrees Celsius in summer to minus 30 in winter. You’re there to combat desertification, planting forests that will lock the desert in place and prevent sandstorms from spreading eastward. It’s heroic work, but let’s be real, the conditions are brutal.

Enter Desert Ark, and suddenly this story gets a whole lot more interesting. Created by Chinese design studio designRESERVE, Desert Ark is China’s first 3D-printed concrete structure in an extreme desert environment, and it’s basically a game changer for anyone working in hostile landscapes. The project is a modular shelter system consisting of nine separate units that include everything volunteers need: a shower room, dining area, and sleeping quarters. Think of it as a base camp that was literally printed into existence.

The whole setup spans 150 square meters, with the individual modules arranged in a circle around a central communal space. It’s smart design that creates both private functional areas and a shared hub where volunteers can gather, which is essential when you’re dealing with the psychological challenges of working in such an isolated, extreme environment.

But here’s where it gets really cool from a tech perspective. These structures weren’t built in a traditional way. They were 3D-printed using robotic construction technology with a sand-based concrete material. The walls feature a distinctive wavy external shape that’s not just aesthetic, it’s engineered to better withstand the punishing desert winds. And that layered texture you see from the printing process? It actually helps the structures blend seamlessly into the sandy landscape, like they were always meant to be there.

The designers also tackled the temperature extremes head-on. The walls incorporate built-in cavities that provide insulation, offering relief when it’s scorching hot or freezing cold. This kind of thoughtful detail makes the difference between a structure that merely exists and one that actually protects the people using it.

What makes Desert Ark particularly fascinating is how it sits at the intersection of multiple urgent conversations happening right now. There’s the environmental angle: since the early 1990s, a non-profit organization has been working to plant trees on the desert’s fringe to contain its eastward expansion. These reforestation efforts are part of creating what’s called a “desert-locking forest,” and they’re essential for combating desertification and reducing sandstorm risks.

Then there’s the technology story. 3D printing construction isn’t exactly new, but applying it in such an extreme environment, with limited resources and tight timeframes, demonstrates the potential for rapid, resilient, and low-impact building. The fact that they pulled this off in one of the harshest places on Earth is a proof of concept that could influence how we think about emergency shelters, remote research stations, and disaster relief structures.

And if you want to get really ambitious with it, the designers themselves suggest that Desert Ark could serve as an architectural prototype for future extraterrestrial habitats. It sounds like science fiction, but when you think about it, the challenges are similar: extreme temperatures, limited resources, the need for rapid construction, and isolated locations where traditional building methods are impractical.

The project has been gaining recognition in the design world, earning a spot on the shortlist for Dezeen Awards China 2025. But more importantly, it’s functioning right now, providing real support to volunteers doing essential environmental work. What’s particularly refreshing about Desert Ark is that it doesn’t feel like technology for technology’s sake. This isn’t about showing off what 3D printing can do. It’s about solving a genuine problem for people doing difficult, important work in a place where conventional construction methods would be prohibitively expensive and time-consuming.

As climate challenges intensify and extreme environments become places where more human activity is necessary, whether for restoration, research, or resource management, we’re going to need more solutions like this. Desert Ark suggests that the future of sustainable construction might not just be about building smarter in cities, it’s about building smarter anywhere, even in the middle of a desert where nothing else can survive.
