This Red Cottage Rises 20 Feet On A Scissor Lift When Floods Strike

In the face of unprecedented climate uncertainty, Swedish architect Ulf Mejergren has created a provocative response that literally elevates the conversation about adaptive housing. The Lift House, a compact red cottage perched atop a mobile scissor lift, stands as both a functional prototype and a conceptual manifesto for living in an era when the ground beneath our feet can no longer be trusted.

Currently on display at ArkDes – The Swedish Center for Architecture and Design in Stockholm as part of the “Beredd (Ready)” exhibition, the project emerged from urgent questions about emergency preparedness. “In an era of increasing downpours, record rainfall, and sudden weather shifts, the work explores what it means to live in a state of constant emergency,” explains Mejergren. “What do we choose to take with us? How do we live when the ground beneath us can no longer be trusted?”

Engineering Domesticity

The architectural solution is deceptively simple yet technically sophisticated. A traditional Swedish cottage, complete with gabled roof and wooden panel cladding, sits mounted on an industrial scissor lift painted in classic Swedish red. The marriage of vernacular domesticity with industrial mechanics creates a striking dialogue between comfort and functionality, between permanence and mobility.

Material efficiency drove every design decision. With the lift’s capacity limited to just 227 kilograms, each component required careful calculation to maintain structural balance and stability. The simplified chimney, fabricated from CNC-cut MDF, and the minimal interior furnishings all contribute to the project’s strategic lightness. Lace curtains flutter at the windows, introducing an almost surreal domesticity to what is essentially a piece of emergency equipment.

Climate Adaptation Strategy

Drawing on research from Linköping University, the project responds to three conventional approaches to climate risk: protection, adaptation, and retreat. Mejergren proposes a fourth strategy—temporary retreat—that offers flexibility when conventional solutions fail. The Lift House can rise above flood waters, relocate when necessary, and provide security through motion rather than static fortification.

The timing of the project reflects growing urgency around climate adaptation. As extreme weather events force more frequent evacuations and permanent displacement, architects worldwide are reconsidering fundamental assumptions about shelter and permanence. Mejergren’s approach sidesteps traditional debates about hardening infrastructure or planned retreat by proposing architecture that can literally rise to meet the challenge.

Cultural Impact and Future Vision

UMA, Mejergren’s Stockholm-based practice founded in 2010, describes itself as adventurous, combining “structure and rationality from architecture and playfulness and punk from art.” This philosophy permeates the Lift House, which operates simultaneously as serious climate research and architectural provocation. The project has garnered significant international attention, with recent features in DesignBoom and Good Good Good highlighting its relevance to global climate adaptation discussions.

Beyond its immediate exhibition context, the Lift House raises fundamental questions about the future of domestic architecture in an unstable world. While the current iteration isn’t intended as a livable dwelling, its conceptual framework challenges architects and policymakers to imagine new forms of resilience. In a world where permanent solutions may prove inadequate, Mejergren’s mobile refuge suggests that our homes, like our communities, may need to learn to dance with uncertainty rather than resist it. The Lift House remains on view at ArkDes through November 2, inviting visitors to contemplate a future where adaptability trumps permanence.

At Design Miami.Paris 2025, artist James de Wulf unveils a ping-pong table with aluminum plates that plays meditative sounds every time the ball hits the surface. On view at L’hôtel de Maisons in Paris between October 22nd and 26th, 2025, the Resonating Ping Pong Table, Song No. 1 (2025) is reminiscent of a xylophone and sound bath in one, as the project isn’t only made for playing table tennis but also doubles as a musical instrument in the form of healing vibrations. The surface is made from aluminum plates that are carefully tuned to specific musical notes.

 

There are six different notes, and they are tuned to the A Minor Pentatonic scale, which is a musical scale often used to create calm and balanced sounds. When a player hits the ball, the vibration from the impact makes the metal plate vibrate, producing a sound that matches one of these notes. As the game continues and the ball moves across different parts of the table, each hit creates a new tone. The sounds then form a kind of melody that changes with every rally. The idea is that while people play ping pong, they also create a piece of live sound, a rhythm that depends on the speed, position, and strength of their movements.

Rubber and foam balls change the sound performance

 

The top of the ping-pong table by artist James de Wulf is made from anodized aluminum to strengthen the metal, protect it from rusting, and improve the sound quality by helping the plates vibrate more clearly. The body of the table is varnished, and the structure is stable enough for play but also has the look of a piece of modern furniture. The net in the middle is removable. When the net is taken off, the flat surface can be used as a dining table. This gives the piece a dual function: it can be a musical ping pong table or a large surface for gatherings.

 

James de Wulf also designed tailored rackets to work with the sound-tuned surface of his aluminum ping-pong table. The rackets are used with a rubber ball, which gives a good bounce and makes the sound vibrations clear, and for quieter use, there are also foam balls. Both types of balls change the sound performance and the way the table reacts during play. The tuning of the plates is done manually, with each of the six plates adjusted to match a specific note. After the Design Miami.Paris 2025 fair, the artist says that there are 10 aluminum ping-pong tables to be produced, with each of them having a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the artist himself.

For Roppongi Art Night 2025, Taiwanese artist Cheng Tsung FENG presents Sailing Castle: Roppongi, a site-specific wooden installation located at Tenso Shrine, one of the district’s most historic sites with a 641-year legacy. The work continues FENG’s Sailing Castle series, initiated at the Taiwan Lantern Festival in 2019, and marks its sixth iteration.

 

The installation takes form from the outlines of Roppongi’s iconic architecture, including the National Art Center Tokyo, Suntory Museum of Art, Tokyo Midtown, 21_21 Design Sight, Mori Tower, Sumitomo Roppongi Grand Tower, and Roppongi Crossing. These profiles are abstracted, merged, and reassembled into a singular timber structure that reflects both the city’s urban identity and the traditional craft techniques used in its making.

Each work interprets a city’s skyline as a collection of sails gathered in a harbor, structures that both anchor and move through time. In Sailing Castle: Roppongi, this concept is materialized through a framework of interwoven wooden components, where light and shadow define the contours of the city’s silhouette.

 

The installation’s structural composition recalls boat-building logic and shrine carpentry, integrating modular joints and rhythmic layering. Its lighting scheme transforms the wooden framework into a glowing form that shifts between visibility and transparency, inviting viewers to perceive Roppongi’s architecture as a fluid and collective identity. Casa San Francisco by Jorge Garibay Architects stands within a vineyard on the outskirts of San Miguel de Allende, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. Conceived as a vacation home, the project draws its character from the world of winemaking and the slow transformations that occur over time.

 

The design reflects on San Miguel’s origins — founded in the 16th century when Franciscan friars introduced grape cultivation to Mexico — and acknowledges how imported traditions were adapted to a new environment.

 

Architecture and viticulture, both brought across the Atlantic, evolved differently once exposed to the local soil, light, and climate. Casa San Francisco continues that dialogue by translating the contemplative spatial order of conventual architecture into a contemporary domestic setting.

Jorge Garibay’s architecture of five volumes

 

The team at Jorge Garibay Architects organizes its Casa San Francisco around a central corridor that runs laterally through five distinct volumes. Each volume opens onto a landscaped area, allowing uninterrupted views of the surrounding vineyard and hills. Entry occurs through a double-height vestibule that filters the transition from exterior to interior, emphasizing the progression from the openness of the landscape to the intimacy of the home.

 

The western side houses the communal spaces — the living room, dining room, kitchen, terrace, garage, and service areas — while the eastern wing is reserved for four bedrooms. This clear separation of uses gives the plan a sense of measured rhythm, echoing the linear geometry of vineyard rows. Movement through the corridor reveals a series of framed perspectives, each calibrated to the shifting daylight and seasonal growth beyond.

Jorge Garibay approached materiality as a means to express the passage of time and the endurance of local craft. The construction employs stone sourced from a nearby quarry, unpolished Mexican marble underfoot, and lime-based paint applied by hand to achieve subtle tonal variations. Together, these materials form monochromatic surfaces that anchor the building to its terrain and emphasize the play of light across textured planes.

 

The simplicity of the palette underscores a disciplined restraint. Oak furniture complements the architecture’s tactile honesty, and the lighting design references the soft glow found in 16th-century convents. Rather than reproducing historic effects, the lighting recreates the warmth and quietude of those spaces within a modern framework.
