Specialty Tool Design: A Rocket-Launched Rope Thrower for Emergency Rescue

For certain tradespeople, there’s a need to accurately throw a rope over a great distance. Arborists use this Big Shot Throw Weight Launcher, an oversized slingshot, to get a rope over branches:

Contractors and roofers use the tool to fire rope over a house, for instance if they need to hoist a tarp up there:

The Big Shot has a range of about 100 feet. The tool below can go much further, thanks to, well, rocket science.

Imagine two ships side by side, one of them disabled. The other is there to tow it to safety. How do they get the tow line from one ship to another?

The answer is this Linethrower 250, a rocket-based tool created by Wescom Group, a UK-based manufacturer of maritime survival solutions.

The tool is designed to be used by one person, and its teardrop-shaped cross section is pretty form-follows-function. The large cylindrical portion contains a length of rope coiled around a spool. The smaller cylinder up top holds a rocket launching tube.

The user holds the handle with one hand to aim it, then uses the other hand to break the seal on the knob and rotate it.

This releases a spring-loaded mechanical striker, which then slams into a cap; the resultant spark ignites the propellant, firing the rocket, which trails the line behind it.

It can carry the rope up to 250m (820 feet) away. The thin “pilot” rope itself isn’t strong enough to tow a ship; instead the heavier-duty tow line is attached to the pilot rope, and then the crew that fired the rocket pulls the tow line through the water and onto their ship.

The tool can also be used for rescue operations, say if a person is in the water and out of life-preserver-tossing range.

The reusable tool has a service life of nine years, with the rockets needing to be replaced every three.

A Heritage Steeped in Art Nouveau

 

Built in the late 18th century, La Maison Belle Époque captures the Perrier-Jouët spirit, where art and nature meet in a constant, creative exchange. The story began in 1811, when Pierre-Nicolas Perrier and Rose-Adélaïde Jouët combined their shared passions for winemaking, botany, and the arts to found the iconic champagne house. That same vision still resonates through the Belle Époque home in Épernay, where the largest private collection of Art Nouveau in Europe unfolds like a living gallery. Inside, visitors encounter unexpected treasures: an original Toulouse-Lautrec painting, a whimsical mushroom-shaped door by Hector Guimard echoing the organic entrances of the Paris Métro, and a room devoted to glassmaker Emile Gallé, whose delicate creations first gave visual form to the Maison’s signature floral identity. Throughout, Japanese influences appear in subtle references to the Japanese anemone, the flower that became Perrier-Jouët’s emblem, alongside furniture adorned with sculpted insects, carved vines, and blossoms that seem to grow naturally from the materials themselves. A bronze sculpture by Auguste Rodin, gifted by employees for the Maison’s centenary, adds a quietly human note.

Contemporary pieces Inside the Maison

 

Alongside its historic pieces, the Maison also houses a striking collection of contemporary works commissioned over the years by Perrier-Jouët from artists around the world. In the hallway, the kinetic table Ephemerā by mischer’traxler unfolds a delicate landscape of vibrantly colored metal plants and insects representing species that are current, extinct, or rediscovered. From a distance, the intricate garden seems to sway to its own rhythm, yet as a visitor approaches, the plants sense the presence and retreat, folding gracefully back into the surface. The work becomes a living metaphor for the fragile dialogue between humans and nature. First presented at Design Miami 2014, the piece now finds a permanent home within the Maison, embodying Perrier-Jouët’s vision of art as an evolving ecosystem.

 

Above the Maison Belle Époque bar, a luminous installation by glass artist Ritsue Mishima catches the eye. Titled All’ombra della luce (In the Shadow of Light), the work was first unveiled at Design Miami 2015. Here, light and shadow are the two protagonists: light evokes the rhythm of the vineyards and the bloom of summer in the Maison’s garden, while shadow recalls the stillness of the cellars where champagne quietly comes to life. Hundreds of suspended glass disks reinterpret Perrier-Jouët’s signature anemone motif. Each unique piece refracts halos of light and soft ripples, creating a suspended, dreamlike choreography that transforms the room into an inverted garden of glass and glow.

Perrier-Jouët & design miami present the Design for Nature Award

 

Building on a partnership that began in 2012, Perrier-Jouët and Design Miami have once again joined forces to celebrate the intersection of art, design, and nature in the French capital. For the 2025 edition, the collaboration took over the legendary Maxim’s restaurant in Paris, transforming it into La Parenthèse Belle Époque, an immersive installation that reimagined the venue’s storied interiors through the lens of Perrier-Jouët’s heritage. Stained glass and arches adorned with Émile Gallé’s signature anemones framed vintage decorative objects and archival posters, creating a vibrant dialogue between Art Nouveau and contemporary design.

 

It was within this evocative setting that Perrier-Jouët and Design Miami presented the inaugural Perrier-Jouët Design for Nature Award. The new initiative invites designers to explore sustainability as a catalyst for cultural and environmental progress. Each year, the award will honor a designer whose practice embodies both a responsible approach to materials and production and a creative spirit aligned with the ethos of Art Nouveau. The selected designer will be commissioned to create a unique work to be unveiled at Design Miami the following year.

We need to talk about the GOV.UK redesign (again)

International Men’s Day is on November 19.

I know this because for many years on International Women’s Day, the comedian Richard Herring would reply to every snarky tweet wondering – erroneously – why men weren’t given their own day as well. They are – it’s on November 19.

Herring’s annual task became a form of painstaking performance art – could his reasonable fact-checking hold back the tide of spluttering online rage?

I’ve seen something similar play out on my social feeds in the past few weeks.

Time and again, I come across incredulous posts thundering that the UK government spent half a million pounds to move the dot in the GOV UK logo. £500 grand! In this economy!

And time and again, incredibly patient designers wade in to explain that no, this isn’t what happened. I have huge respect for their forbearance. But the tide keeps on coming.

No time for nuance

This story begins in June, when the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), which oversees the Government Digital Service (GDS) published new brand guidelines for GOV.UK.

To coincide with the launch of the new app, the GDS worked with M+C Saatchi to refresh the brand, as part of a £532,000 project to modernise GOV.UK and broaden its appeal.

Part of this work involved, yes, moving the dot from the baseline into the middle of the GOV UK name, to underline the fact that it’s more than a website. The design teams also changed up the colour palette, from the previous black and white to a more welcoming blue and teal.

Never one for nuance, the press had a field day.

“Absolutely dotty!” The Daily Mail spluttered. “Government blows over half a million on ‘vanity’ makeover for website which involved moving a full stop.” For The Telegraph, it provided, “The depressing proof that our political class is obsessed with style over substance.”

This reaction was fairly predictable. At a time when public finances are under real pressure, here was a story that fitted neatly into the Venn diagram overlap of wasteful politicians on one side, and post-Jaguar logo lunacy on the other.

But it’s also, of course, nonsense. As Tom May memorably put it in an article on Creative Bloq, “It’s the journalistic equivalent of describing brain surgery as ‘doctor pokes head with stick’.”

And yet, it feels like the case for context and nuance has fallen on deaf ears. There seems to be a constant drip-drip-drop of social media posts decrying the rebrand.

A perfect storm

Most frustratingly, some of these come from people who appear to be professional designers. They must know this wasn’t about moving a dot, and perpetuating this narrative threatens to damage the industry. Anything for the #numbers, eh?

In response, designer Ben Mottershead is one of those who had waded into the debate online. The toxicity, he believes, comes from a combination of misunderstanding, and political point scoring.

“Public confidence in government spending is at an all-time low, while online, being first has overtaken being right,” he says. “That mix creates a perfect storm of reactionary noise, quick opinions, few facts, and even less understanding of what good design actually costs or delivers.

“As an industry, we have to challenge that. When creative investment is questioned, our job isn’t just to defend the work; it’s to demand better discourse around it. Too many ‘hot takes’ ignore basic due diligence in the chase for clicks.”

He is not alone in pointing out that 500k is a tiny percentage of the UK Government’s annual budget.

“It’s 0.0004% – the equivalent of pocket change for a multi-year redesign that improves accessibility, usability, and efficiency across millions of general public interactions. If a corporation carried out a similar piece of work, it’d be lorded over and congratulated.”

GOV UK is not only a design success story – it’s a cornerstone of government services in this country, and envied the world over.

According to YouGov it’s one of the most-recognised digital services in the UK. Since it launched in October 2021, it’s had 14.8 billion visits, and 38.6 billion pageviews. Polling shows that 80% of users are satisfied with their most recent experience – a pretty high mark given the breadth and scale of its services.

“If there’s a failure here, it’s not in the design, it’s in the communication,” Mottershead says. “The government clearly didn’t tell the story of the work, leaving designers once again to fight the corner for an industry that continues to prove its worth but rarely gets the credit.”

Filling the explanation void

This failure to explain the work is frustrating. Designer Matt Eason submitted a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to DSIT, asking to see audience and user research, initial concepts, in-progress designs, and, “any documents, reports or presentations showing the progress of the rebrand, including the GOV.UK logo and wider design language.”

It was rejected, as was his subsequent appeal. Initially he was told it would compromise the “safe space” that ministers and officials need to discuss new ideas. Now, he has been told it would be too expensive to provide the information he wants.

“I think they missed an opportunity at launch to release the thinking and research behind the rebrand,” Eason says.

“As well as being useful across government, where the findings could have been applied to other services, it would have given them some degree of control over the narrative. The information void they left was then inevitably filled by people pushing various viewpoints, based on not much evidence, or in some cases just making stuff up.”

The honourable exception in all this is Kim Grey, a developer on the GOV.UK Design System team who blogs as beeps. They wrote an excellent post explaining the changes, including a clear steer on the strategic problems the new designs are intended to solve:

“To expand the GOV.UK brand to provide flexibility across multiple platforms, such as apps, video, and social media.”

“To tackle the perception among younger generations that GOV.UK looks unfriendly and intimidating, without devaluing the existing trust in the service.”

On the cost, they pointed out the project, “was the full-time salaried efforts of dozens of design, development, and delivery specialists for more than a year. By that metric, it’s actually quite cheap.”

And on the logo, “It might not be obvious from a single side-by-side graphic, but a lot of time went into interrogating what we had and experimenting with what could be added… Just because the destination of that journey was a logo that intentionally looks quite similar to the existing one doesn’t mean that the money was wasted, or that creating something radically different would have been better value for money.”

A fighting chance

It’s a brilliant post. But it begs the question, why didn’t the GDS come out with such a clear and articulate explanation? And why have they frustrated Matt Eason’s attempts to help them reclaim the narrative?

Because there’s something bigger in play here for designers.

At a time when the whole industry is under pressure to explain that design is more than a logo – it’s a strategic tool to solve problems and drive growth – this story is pushing the exact opposite idea into the mainstream.

Sarah Robb, creator of the Brand Strategy Academy and co-author of Rebrand Right, thinks the government made several compounding errors here.

“They could have helped themselves by proactively sharing the problems with the previous identity system that were preventing taxpayers from accessing what they needed,” she says.

“You have to actively dig to discover that the previous identity felt intimidating and unfriendly to younger generations. Joe Public isn’t going to do that digging.”

And we – the media included – need to get better at contextualising design work, Robb argues.

“People fixate on the logo, the front door, and question why £500,000 was spent changing its colour. But they miss the extensive work that has rebuilt the foundations, walls and entire structure of the house.”

Her advice for any organisation about to launch design work is to give proper context, and avoid before-and-after logo graphics.

“Give yourself a fighting chance by explaining why the change was needed – rather than just showing a tiny part of the solution,” Robb says.

Moldova’s Game-Changing Sports Hub Brings Soccer and Solar Power Together

Picture this: you drop your kid off at football practice, and instead of scrolling through your phone in the parking lot for an hour, you head inside to a yoga class, grab a coffee with other parents, or hit the gym while watching your little one train through floor-to-ceiling windows. This isn’t some futuristic fantasy. It’s exactly what’s happening at Moldova’s first solar-powered sports centre, and honestly, it’s making us rethink what community spaces can be.

LH47, Moldova’s largest architectural firm, just completed this remarkable project in Durlești, just outside the capital Chișinău. What started as a straightforward kids’ football training facility turned into something far more interesting: a multi-layered community hub that runs partially on sunshine and actually makes sense for how families really live.

The genius here isn’t just the solar panels (though those are pretty cool). It’s that architect Serghei Mirza and his team at LH47 actually thought about the entire ecosystem of a children’s sports program. Mirza and his team recognized a fundamental truth: kids never show up to football practice alone. Parents are always there, waiting. So rather than designing a building where parents kill time in the parking lot, they created a space that transforms that waiting period into something valuable—a chance for parents to rest, connect with other families, or stay active themselves.

That simple observation shaped the entire building. Instead of creating one giant space where everyone gets in everyone else’s way, they designed independent circulation routes for different user groups. Kids have their path, parents have theirs, coaches move freely, and staff can work without navigating through crowds. It sounds obvious when you say it out loud, but how many buildings actually function this way?

The site itself presented a challenge that became an opportunity. With a five-meter elevation difference across the slope, the building appears deceptively modest from the entrance (just two stories), then reveals its full three-level height from the field side. This terraced design lets the structure nestle into the landscape rather than fighting against it, using natural topography for stability and drainage. Smart, right?

Inside, the programming is equally thoughtful. The main level houses classrooms and a café with panoramic views of the pitch (because who doesn’t want to sip their latte while watching practice?). Upstairs, adults get their own fitness zone with boxing and yoga spaces. And the lower level, carved into the slope, contains locker rooms and concrete stands designed for comfort and clear sightlines. Every detail serves the people using the space.

Then there’s the sustainability piece, which feels refreshingly practical rather than performative. Solar panels on the roof generate part of the building’s energy needs, significantly reducing operating costs. A rainwater harvesting system handles irrigation and maintenance. These aren’t add-ons or greenwashing, they’re integrated into the building’s DNA from day one.

Aesthetically, the football club breaks away from the boxy, utilitarian sports facilities we’re all used to. LH47 opted for biomorphic lines, inclined columns, floating balconies, and transparent façades that create a sense of lightness and movement. Trees are woven into the landscape design to provide natural shading. The architecture feels alive, which makes sense for a space dedicated to movement and activity.

Mirza acknowledges the project wasn’t easy. Between the sloping terrain and the complex, multi-layered program serving different user groups simultaneously, the engineering coordination had to be meticulous. But he sees this as the crucible where strong architecture is forged. For LH47, the work goes beyond designing buildings. It’s about designing emotions and experiences. The aim here was to create an environment where people feel both comfortable and energized, where the space itself enhances how you feel while you’re in it.

That last bit resonates. Good design should make you feel something, whether it’s calm, energized, inspired, or all of the above. And in an era where so many public buildings feel generic and soulless, it’s refreshing to see a project that prioritizes human experience alongside technical performance. Moldova might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think about innovative architecture, but projects like this prove that groundbreaking design can happen anywhere. With its 2,018 square meters of thoughtfully programmed space, this sports centre sets a new standard for what community infrastructure can be: sustainable, beautiful, functional, and genuinely designed for how people actually live.

Balkrishna Doshi’s final work opens on the Vitra Campus

 

The Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, Germany, welcomes a deeply personal and spiritual addition with the completion of the Doshi Retreat, a contemplative space designed by Pritzker Prize laureate Balkrishna Doshi together with Studio Sangath, led by his granddaughter Khushnu Panthaki Hoof and her husband, Sönke Hoof. The project marks both Doshi’s first built work outside of India and the last he conceived before his passing in 2023.

 

Designed as a winding subterranean path, the steel retreat guides visitors beneath the surface of the Vitra Campus, bringing together Indian philosophy with meditative spatial rhythm. Along its curving walls, soft tones of gong and ceramic flute echo through hidden recesses. ‘This architecture was born from a dream Doshi had of two interweaving cobras,’ explains Khushnu Panthaki Hoof, a poetic image that finds form in the spiraling movement of the structure and symbolic reference to Kundalini, the coiled energy said to lie dormant at the base of the spine in yogic tradition.

An audio system, embedded into concave cavities in the ground, diffuses layers of gong and flute tones that accompany one’s passage through the space. The soundscape is not composed as music but experienced as vibration. ‘It is sound, resonating through the visitor’s body, that erases the boundary between self and structure,’ observes Hoof.

 

At the culmination of the path, visitors encounter a contemplation chamber illuminated by a hand-hammered brass mandala crafted in India. Its reflective surface scatters light across the interior, suggesting an inner cosmos of still movement, a fitting metaphor for Doshi’s lifelong search for harmony between material and spirit.

 

The Doshi Retreat is built from forged and formed XCarb® steel, a low-carbon-emissions material made from recycled steel and produced with renewable energy, donated by ArcelorMittal. Over time, its surface will weather to a natural patina through controlled corrosion, merging with the earthbound tones of the surrounding landscape.

 

Following Doshi’s passing, Studio Sangath in Ahmedabad continued shaping the retreat in close dialogue with his vision. Together, they translated its conceptual rhythm into physical form, weaving it into the fabric of the Vitra Campus.

Electric vehicles can recharge on motorways

 

A motorway that can recharge electric vehicles as they drive on the road has announced early test results on the A10 path, about 40 kilometers southwest of Paris. Named Charge as You Drive, the project is a collaboration between VINCI Autoroutes, Electreon, VINCI Construction, Gustave Eiffel University, and Hutchinson. The way it works is that under the asphalt of the A10 motorway, engineers have placed induction coils along 1.5 kilometers of road. These are connected to an electrical power supply and controlled by sensors and software, so when an electric vehicle with a receiver coil drives over this section, energy moves from the road coil to the receiver coil using a magnetic field, recharging the automobile, especially the heavyweight ones like delivery trucks and vans.

 

The receiver then sends this energy to the vehicle’s battery while it moves, and the automobile doesn’t need to stop or plug in since its ride is being recharged automatically through the road with a process called dynamic wireless charging. The catch is that each electric vehicle needs to have a receiver installed before it gets recharged on this motorway. For the A10 test, four types of vehicles were equipped: a heavy truck, a utility van, a passenger car, and a bus. These prototypes are used to measure how well the system works in real driving conditions with other traffic.

Early tests results from trials on A10 motorway

 

Before the motorway installation, the materials and structure were tested for two years. The work started in September 2023 in VINCI Construction’s Road Research Center in Mérignac, where different materials were tested to check their strength and durability. The goal was to find materials that would not wear out quickly when heavy vehicles drive over them. Then, researchers from Gustave Eiffel University carried out large-scale tests at the LAMES laboratory in Bouguenais. They used machines called traffic simulators to copy the weight and stress of 25 years of truck traffic in only a few weeks. These tests showed that the coils and pavement stayed in an ideal condition.

 

The French authorities later on gave permission for the system to be installed on a live motorway, and now the initial tests have started. The coils were embedded in the A10 surface, and the test section was opened for normal traffic. Three laboratories from Gustave Eiffel University monitored the road during the first real-world trials, and their early results have shown that the system can deliver more than 300 kilowatts of peak power and over 200 kilowatts of average power in stable conditions. This means that electric vehicles, even large trucks, can be recharged with enough power while driving at motorway speeds. Dynamic charging is now being tested in several countries, including the United States, China, South Korea, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and Norway. The A10 project is the first time this technology is used on a motorway with normal traffic to see if it recharges electric vehicles while driving.

Top architects and artists used for AI prompts on midjourney

 

A study finds that Zaha Hadid and Wes Anderson are some of the top architects and artists used in prompts to generate AI images and videos on Midjourney. Conducted by the web-based video editing platform Kapwing, the research has studied how users refer to famous names and styles when creating their images and videos with AI. The findings show that the most used architect name on Midjourney was Zaha Hadid, with 63,103 mentions, with the next one being Frank Lloyd Wright at 13,361 mentions. Other architects frequently used on Midjourney to generate AI images and videos include Tadao Ando, Frank Gehry, Peter Zumthor, Kengo Kuma, Bjarke Ingels, Le Corbusier, Richard Meier, and Jean Nouvel

 

For the directors, Wes Anderson was the most mentioned, with 92,378 prompts. His name was used more than the combined total for Tim Burton (57,000), Christopher Nolan (22,246), Ridley Scott (20,109), Guillermo del Toro (19,755), and Stanley Kubrick (16,758). Among illustrators, the fantasy artist known as WLOP was the most used name, with 166,415 mentions. Then, there’s Greg Rutkowski following with 134,695 mentions, who is also involved in a legal case against AI companies for using his name and style without permission. The study on the most copied architects and artists on Midjourney to generate AI images and videos also found that anime is one of the most repeated visual subjects in prompts. The most used titles were Akira with 53,333 mentions and Naruto with 40,494. Works by Studio Ghibli, such as Howl’s Moving Castle and Spirited Away, also appeared frequently.

Midjourney Discord server counts keyword frequency

 

The study team started by building a list of 897 keywords, and each keyword was a name or topic used to inspire AI-generated images. These keywords came from eight groups: artists, illustrators, film directors, architects, cities, media franchises, fast-food chains, and anime. The researchers used a public online database called Midlibrary to collect examples of popular names from each category. 

 

Then, they used the Midjourney Discord server to count how many times these keywords appeared in AI image and video prompts (for example, one prompt could be ‘in the style of Wes Anderson,’ or ‘a building by Zaha Hadid’). The total data included 4,929,594 prompts, showing how often people use references from real architects, directors, and artists when working with AI.

There’s a real possibility that transformative, human‑level AI, sometimes referred to as AGI or ‘“superintelligence” could arrive within three to ten years, as consistently predicted by tech leaders like OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Meta’s Mark  Zuckerberg and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei.

If this happens, billions could lose their jobs and we could see a wave of mass unemployment across all skill levels, causing economic shock across the globe.

The economic disruption isn’t theoretical, it’s already happening. Economist Anton Korinek, who researches AI’s impact on labour markets, warns, “If cognitive labor becomes fully automatable, the wages of workers could fall to near-zero, rendering large swathes of the population economically obsolete.”

While ChatGPT might help you write an email or conduct a research project, AGI could run entire businesses and make major policy decisions. This isn’t about boosting productivity, it’s about replacing human labour.

If this sounds far-fetched, think about this as a pre-pandemic moment. What felt like a remote possibility became an urgent reality overnight. Planning ahead isn’t overreacting, it’s essential to our future.

It isn’t a done deal, but the stakes are high.

Beyond the paycheck: the ripple effects

Imagine billions of people no longer needed and jobs cut – not just logistics and admin, but software engineers, solicitors, creatives, strategists, financial advisors, doctors. What then?

We could face a complete loss of bargaining power and of dignity, rising mental health challenges, growing populism and a breakdown in trust in democratic institutions.

Pro‑preparedness, not anti-tech

Yes, many of us already use AI tools for better research or strategy. And yes, AI brings real benefits if responsibly applied. My own consultancy work has seen deeper insights thanks to AI tools, and there’s nothing wrong with embracing that.

But this isn’t about increased efficiency for businesses. It’s about humanity’s future.

We’ve gone way beyond conversations about what this may mean for creative freelancers. The impact is much wider than that.

Even if we only look at our industry, recent graduates are struggling to find a foothold and even seasoned veterans are feeling the pinch. Economic disruption isn’t coming – it’s already begun. And if human-level AI arrives, almost every sector will be impacted.
