This E-truck Transforms Into a Solar Camper With One Button, and That’s Not Its Best Feature

Crab motion, steer-by-wire, full-wheel steering, removable appliances, and an energy-harvesting roof panel. Dongfeng’s E-Truck reads less like a traditional pickup spec sheet and more like a wish list from someone who actually uses vehicles for multiple, contradictory purposes. The 2025 Red Dot Best of the Best winner tackles the pickup truck’s biggest limitation: rigidity. Built on Dongfeng’s skateboard chassis and wrapped in a minimalist stainless steel body, it’s designed to morph between work mode, leisure mode, and emergency response mode without requiring you to own three separate vehicles. It’s the kind of concept that makes you realize how much we’ve accepted compromise in the truck world, simply because that’s how it’s always been done.

The E-Truck is apparently China’s first concept pickup to win Red Dot’s top honor, and while that’s noteworthy from a national pride angle, what matters is that Dongfeng actually earned it. This thing solves real problems. The design team, led by Zhang Yongliang and Cai Qiming with a nine-person in-house crew, didn’t just slap some LED strips on a conventional truck body and call it futuristic. They rethought the entire proposition, starting with that skateboard platform and working outward to create something that genuinely functions differently depending on context. The one-button mode transition sounds like marketing fluff until you see what it actually does: the rear bed cover flips up to form a small tent in SUV mode, transforming the cargo area into sheltered space. French doors on the truck bed give you unconventional access angles, and the whole setup accommodates removable modules like stereos, a refrigerator, and other gear that slot in and out based on what you’re doing that day.

The exterior is where Dongfeng’s confidence really shows. That stainless steel metal paint finish gives the truck an industrial, almost utilitarian aesthetic that feels deliberately anti-macho compared to the chrome-laden aggression most American pickups lean into. Full-width LED strips front and rear provide the sci-fi visual punch without looking like they’re trying too hard, and the minimalist surfacing keeps things clean. There’s a solar panel integrated into the roof, which addresses one of the biggest anxieties around electric adventure vehicles: what happens when you’re nowhere near a charger? Dongfeng’s answer is simple. You harvest your own energy and reduce dependence on infrastructure. It’s a feature Rivian should have prioritized from day one instead of making it an afterthought accessory.

Inside, the E-Truck goes full software-defined vehicle with a wraparound digital display that stretches across the entire dashboard, plus a floating center tablet. The steering wheel is rectangular, which some people will hate and others will find ergonomically superior once they adjust. What matters is the multi-dimensional environment-sensing HMI design, which adapts the interface based on context. You’re not navigating the same menus whether you’re in work mode hauling equipment or camping mode setting up for the night. The tech actually responds to what you’re doing, which is how all vehicle interfaces should work but rarely do because legacy automakers are terrified of complexity.

The real party trick is the mobility tech. Full-wheel steering and crab motion put the E-Truck in the same conversation as the GMC Hummer EV, which popularized the feature for tight maneuvering and diagonal movement. Steer-by-wire eliminates the mechanical steering column entirely, replacing it with electronic controls that allow for more flexible packaging and theoretically better precision. Combined with the skateboard chassis’s inherent flexibility, you get a vehicle that can navigate tight job sites, parallel park in absurdly small spaces, and handle off-road obstacles with more finesse than traditional four-wheel steering setups. Dongfeng didn’t release exact specs on battery capacity or range, because this is still a concept, but the modular approach and solar augmentation suggest they’re thinking beyond the “bigger battery equals better truck” mentality that dominates current EV development.

What strikes me most is how the E-Truck makes Western competitors look weirdly conservative. Tesla’s Cybertruck is polarizing but ultimately still a pickup truck with a weird body. Ford’s F-150 Lightning is a solid electrification of an existing formula. Rivian comes closest with its adventure-focused modularity, but even the R1T doesn’t go as far as Dongfeng in questioning what a utility vehicle should be. The E-Truck suggests a future where your vehicle is a platform that genuinely adapts rather than a fixed tool you’ve learned to use in creative ways. Whether Dongfeng can actually build this thing at scale and make it affordable is a different question entirely, but as a design concept, it’s doing exactly what Red Dot awards are supposed to recognize: showing us possibilities we didn’t know we wanted.

If there’s a criticism to be made, it’s that MedPen might be too good at what it does. The ability to record discreetly is a double-edged sword, and it’s easy to imagine scenarios where this pen could be misused. But that’s true of any powerful tool. What matters is that MedPen gives users control over their audio data in a way that most devices don’t. I’m cautiously optimistic about MedPen because it solves real problems with thoughtful design choices. The privacy-first approach feels radical in today’s surveillance capitalism landscape. The form factor actually works for EDC, although if there’s one thing I wish, it’s that this pen came in color variants… because this unassuming black BIC-looking device could easily get borrowed by some random co-worker who then forgets to return it. As someone who’s lost hundreds of pens to colleagues, schoolmates, and random people at the post-office… that might just be a little something to watch out for!

Museum Ehrhardt, designed by Francis Kéré, has broken ground in the small village of Plüschow near the Baltic Sea. The work marks the architect’s first cultural project in Germany and his first museum building in Europe. Covering 1,400 square meters, the timber and rammed earth museum is dedicated to photography and contemporary art, with a focus on the work and legacy of Alfred Ehrhardt (1901–1984), a leading figure of the New Objectivity movement, a German modern realist movement which arose in the 1920s as a rejection of romantic idealism.

 

The site sits beside Schloss Plüschow, a historic castle that now houses an artist residency and gallery. The new museum adds a contemporary layer to this context, engaging with its rural surroundings through material honesty and spatial restraint. Rather than standing apart, the building integrates with the landscape, encouraging a quiet dialogue between past and present.

The architecture of Museum Ehrhardt reflects architect Francis Kéré’s long-standing interest in local craftsmanship and environmentally responsive design. Constructed mainly from timber and clay, the building’s structure is defined by a central rammed earth wall that runs along its main axis. This wall, formed with a rough yet precise texture, anchors the space both physically and atmospherically. It balances humidity and temperature while shaping the rhythm of the galleries.

 

Above this earthen spine, a timber framework spans the museum’s full width. Designed for future dismantling and reuse, the wooden structure embodies a circular approach to building that prioritizes adaptability and longevity. Developed in collaboration with HK Architekten from Austria, the framework demonstrates a meticulous understanding of material performance and joinery, combining regional craft traditions with forward-looking engineering.

The museum’s outer form is defined by a timber pergola that recalls the familiar geometry of rural gable roofs. Its contours trace a vernacular silhouette while allowing the roofline to open toward the surrounding fields and sky. A roof garden extends across the upper level, acting as a biotope that visually and ecologically binds the museum to its setting.

 

At ground level, a garden unfolds from the museum café, designed with subtle topographical shifts that guide rainwater into collection areas. This system reduces dependence on external water sources and supports the vegetation that softens the building’s perimeter. The landscape and architecture are conceived as one continuous surface, each of which supports the other through an economy of means.

 

Francis Kéré’s design language remains calm and tactile. Clay, timber, and rammed earth create a sense of groundedness appropriate to the rural setting, while the open layout encourages fluid movement between interior and exterior spaces.

Maison Alcée Persée Fantôme Limited Edition for Hodinkee puts you in-charge of building your own desk clock

Maison Alcée, founded by French engineers Alcée and Benoît Montfort, and NYC-based watch website, Hodinkee, have joined forces for the first time to release a limited-edition desk clock. This is targeted at collectors who don’t want a finished model, but desire one they can actually have some hands-on fun with before it’s realized as a complete work of haute horologiere.

The Maison Alcée Persée Fantôme Limited Edition for Hodinkee is more than any special edition or limited release desk clock you can think of. The difference is at the construction level itself; essentially owing to the Maison Alcée’s approach to watchmaking. The French Maison focuses on “teaching people about watchmaking” by letting them be a part of the finishing of the timepiece, which resonated with Hodinkee enough to become part of this 25-piece limited edition.

Limited edition timepieces in modern watchmaking are often rare collectibles. Alcée Persée Fantôme – based on the company’s existing desk clock concept – is not quite there. It invites collectors to physically become part of the watch-making process and build the exclusive clock you can own. That to me per se, seems like an experience anyone would dream about before owning a watch, but speaking for most of us, we rarely get the chance to live it.

The Alcée Persée Fantôme thus doesn’t start as a finished product. It is offered as an experience via a kit. It comes with 233 meticulously crafted components, which purchasers are required to assemble themselves and hand-paint the lume to steadily piece together a limited-edition mechanical clock. The company says it takes 6-10 hours of build time to create for yourself the most personal limited editions you can ever own.

So, you don’t just own this desk clock; you, in fact, build it, adjust it, and live with it. And you just don’t do that Maison Alcée style, but in Hodinkee’s vision. The clock has some notable details like its dark aesthetics achieved by ruthenium coating on a stainless steel base, which ties it closely to Hodinkee’s signature color theme.

For the features, the Maison Alcée Persée Fantôme Limited Edition for Hodinkee is powered by an in-house manual-wound movement that beats at 18,000 VPH frequency and has a substantial 14-day power reserve. Of course, building an exclusive watch is no child’s play. Each build kit is provided with a 150-page instruction manual and video tutorials for each stage of watchmaking. To ensure what you build remains elusive, the collaboration is limited to 25 units. 20 of which will be available globally online, and the remaining five are reserved for the Watches of Switzerland showroom in Soho, New York. Alcée Persée Fantôme will cost $9,900 apiece and will be sold in a rosewood presentation box.

These ‘Neuroscientific Plates’ are designed to enhance how you taste things

HAK Studio’s UMA Tableware Collection represents a poetic union of design, neuroscience, and sensory wellness. Developed through in-depth research in gastrophysics, the study of how sensory stimuli shape our perception of flavor, the collection transforms everyday dining into a multisensory experience. Each piece in the series explores how color, texture, and form can subtly manipulate taste expectations and amplify the enjoyment of food, particularly for those whose sense of taste has diminished.

Drawing inspiration from the pioneering work of Professor Charles Spence at the University of Oxford, UMA stems from the understanding that the brain forms flavor expectations before a meal is even tasted. Visual and tactile cues such as surface gloss, hue, or material finish can psychologically intensify sweetness, saltiness, or richness. This opens a new path toward healthier eating, where design itself can reduce the reliance on excessive sugar or salt while maintaining sensory satisfaction.

The collection also serves as a powerful reminder of how deeply intertwined our senses truly are. It is fascinating to see how something as intangible as texture can profoundly affect taste, demonstrating that as designers, we must learn to holistically engage all five senses of the human mind and body to craft truly wholesome, resonant experiences. UMA’s design sensitivity embraces this nuance, balancing universal neuroscientific principles with local craftsmanship traditions to ensure the pieces evoke comfort and familiarity across diverse cultural contexts.

The centerpiece of the collection, a swirling porcelain dessert plate, is crafted to heighten the perception of sweetness. Its glossy, candy-like glaze swirls in shades reminiscent of toffee and strawberry cream, echoing the visual memory of confectionery indulgence. The undulating pattern and reflective surface emulate the fluidity of melted chocolate, activating sweet associations even before the first bite. Each plate is individually hand-finished using a color-mixing technique that ensures no two pieces are ever alike, making every dessert experience unique and personal.

Complementing this is the salty bowl, a tactile exploration of contrast. Its rough, unglazed exterior invites the hand to explore a texture resembling crystallized salt, while the smooth, quartz-glazed interior provides a gentle counterpoint. The interplay between the two surfaces encourages sensory engagement; what you feel begins to influence what you taste. Rooted in Japanese tableware traditions, the bowl’s balanced proportions make it ideal for comforting dishes such as soups, stews, and rice-based meals, where warmth and texture combine to enhance savoriness.

To test UMA’s effectiveness, HAK Studio conducted interviews with 20 participants, including older adults and individuals recovering from COVID-19–related taste loss. Their feedback consistently confirmed that using or even observing the prototypes enhanced their sensory awareness and overall perception of flavor.

Produced in Copenhagen, UMA exemplifies how craftsmanship and neuroscience can intertwine to serve both aesthetic and functional goals. It’s not just tableware, it’s a sensory instrument, a quiet bridge between the scientific and the emotional. Through thoughtful form, material honesty, and cultural sensitivity, HAK Studio demonstrates how design can become a powerful agent of sensory restoration and well-being, turning the act of eating into a mindful, multisensory ritual.

3D-printed Lamp Turns Your Baseball Obsession into Quirky Wall Lighting

That’s one ‘baller’ lamp if you ask me! Created by Ezra Feldman (who goes by EYF Design on Instagram), this Baseball Wall Lamp turns a sports moment into a piece of quirky themed lighting that I’d honestly love to see at every sports bar across the US. Simply put, the lamp features a catcher’s mitt along with a ball sinking right into it, mid-catch. The ball is 3D-printed from a translucent polymer, and features a standard disc-shaped LED lamp underneath. Plug it in and the ball starts glowing.

The entire lamp is 3D printed, and Ezra sells his designs online for people to print on their own too. The Baseball Wall Lamp is a new addition to Feldman’s collection, and can be found on his Thangs3D webstore. The lamp looks cartoonishly perfect, and sort of falls in line with the Iron Man repulsor lamps seen online (featuring Iron Man’s hand along with the glowing light in the center). Honestly, Feldman should make more, maybe one Dragonball-Z lamp, or a Kobe Bryant hand lamp. Just thinking out loud!

“Designed for sports fans, kids’ rooms, or anyone who loves clever, story-driven design, it turns a familiar object into a warm and cheerful wall feature,” describes Feldman. “The glove mounts flat against the wall, while the “ball” acts as the light source, creating a soft glow that feels like it’s caught mid-catch. It’s an easy multicolor print, fun to assemble, and a guaranteed conversation starter,” he adds.

The beauty of getting a 3D printed file for a lamp means you can pretty much modify it to a point of no return. Make it bigger or smaller, add/amend details, or even change the colors. The entire thing’s designed to be 3D printed – and the only real caveat is that you need to use a multi-filament printer if you want it to look the way it does here. The alternative, however, is to print your design in a neutral color and paint on the details by hand. Sure, it adds an extra step, but that’s a lot easier than buying a whole new 3D printer.

The design costs a mere $3 on the Thangs3D website, and you can print as many lamps as you want to (for personal use only). Alternatively, you could sign to become a member of Feldman’s Thangs3D page and get access to all the products on the website for the price of a monthly/annual membership. There are more than 40 designs to choose from, including some really cool guitar picks!

Škoda 1000 MBX Concept: Brutalist Architecture Meets 1960s Proportion

Most retro concepts replicate surfaces. The 1000 MBX concept replicates a spatial problem and solves it differently. When Škoda’s original 1000 MB coupe arrived in the late 1960s, its most distinctive feature was a near-vertical rear windshield that prioritized headroom and cargo access within a compact footprint. Antti Mikael Savio (exterior) preserves that upright greenhouse geometry in this 2025 concept while replacing the glass entirely with a continuous body panel. The spatial intent remains identical, but the execution inverts the original’s logic. The rear window omission serves dual purpose: honoring the original’s distinctive vertical glass while creating substantially more cargo volume by extending the hatch opening nearly to the roofline.

Savio studied brutalist architecture before sketching this shape, and that influence defines every surface decision. “Modern sports cars often appear overly aggressive, while those from the ’60s and ’70s carried a certain elegance, even endearing charm, and that’s what I wanted to preserve,” Savio explains. The result challenges the aggressive sculpting that dominates modern electric concepts.

Brutalist Geometry Replaces Gentle Curves

The original 1000 MB spoke through soft volumes and chrome-trimmed edges. Surfaces curved gently across the hood, fenders, and roof in the rounded language of 1960s European economy cars. The MBX concept eliminates that softness entirely. Flat body panels meet glass at sharp transitions with no chamfer or radius to ease the eye. Tall bodysides rise with minimal curvature, creating walls rather than sculpted forms. The matte champagne finish erases reflections, forcing the car to read as geometric volume instead of painted metal.

Brutalist buildings use exposed concrete and sharp angles to emphasize material honesty and structural clarity. Antti Mikael Savio applies that philosophy by stripping decorative elements and letting proportion carry the design statement. The front fascia uses LED patterns to create depth without a physical grille. The rear panel integrates taillights as textured surfaces rather than applied graphics. Chrome trim disappears. Character lines vanish. What remains are planes, edges, and the tension between mass and void.

This represents a complete reversal of current automotive design trends. Where competitors add creases and sculpted haunches to suggest speed, the MBX uses restraint. The tall, flat sides create a formal stance that recalls the original coupe’s upright posture while reading distinctly modern through geometric precision. The wheels pushed to absolute corners act as sculptural anchors rather than rolling stock, grounding the visual mass at each corner. Positioning wheels at the furthest possible points from the vehicle’s center creates visual stability and maximizes interior space by eliminating wasted bodywork between wheel and cabin.

Where most EV concepts add drama through convoluted surfaces or faux performance cues, the MBX achieves presence via geometric restraint and architectural honesty. The design outcome is a vehicle that doesn’t beg for attention through aggression. It earns presence through confident geometry and material reduction.

Split Sliding Doors Solve Access Without Conventional Hinges

The most radical spatial innovation appears in profile. Instead of conventional doors or a single massive sliding panel, the MBX divides each side into two horizontal sections. The front panel slides forward, the rear panel slides back. This creates pillarless access to both rows while maintaining structural rigidity and reducing the travel distance each panel requires. A single full-length slider would need nearly the entire vehicle length to open fully. The split configuration cuts that requirement in half.

This solves the practical problem of a 2+2 coupe: rear seat access typically forces front passengers to exit or requires awkward gymnastics through a narrow opening. The split sliders eliminate both compromises. The rear section opens independently, providing direct access to the second row without disturbing front occupants. For a compact footprint vehicle, this represents genuine spatial problem-solving rather than stylistic novelty.

The execution also preserves the clean bodyside aesthetic. When closed, the panel divisions create horizontal lines that emphasize the car’s width and low visual center of gravity. The dark roof and pillar treatment extends down to meet these lines, further compressing the perceived height while maintaining actual interior volume.

Interior Spatial Flexibility Through Material Reduction

The cabin architecture continues the brutalist material reduction philosophy. A continuous bench seat spans the full width with no console dividing the space. This wasn’t purely nostalgic tribute to the original 1000 MB’s bench seating. The flat EV skateboard platform eliminates the transmission tunnel that typically necessitates a center console. David Stingl (interior) uses that width for social seating arrangements rather than defaulting to isolated bucket seats. Where the original coupe’s bench seat resulted from mechanical packaging constraints, the modern interpretation transforms that limitation into intentional design strategy, using material reduction to enhance spatial flexibility rather than merely accommodate hardware.

The rear seats fold upward to create cargo volume behind the front bench. Škoda demonstrates this with a bicycle stored vertically alongside luggage. This transforms the 2+2 configuration into a genuine utility space when passengers aren’t required. The upright greenhouse geometry that defines the exterior silhouette pays dividends here with vertical clearance for tall cargo. The solid rear panel extends cargo access nearly to the roofline, creating an opening substantially larger than conventional hatchback designs despite similar overall length.

The floating dashboard reinforces the material reduction strategy. Rather than a full-width structure anchored to the door panels, the dash appears suspended, revealing the floor’s continuity and emphasizing cabin width. This suspended design creates the perception of greater interior volume by eliminating the visual barrier between left and right sides of the cabin, making the space feel wider and more open than conventional dashboard architectures. A projection display replaces physical screens, projecting information onto surfaces rather than embedding technology into the architecture. The geometric steering wheel uses squared-off top and bottom sections with rounded sides, creating design continuity with the exterior’s angular vocabulary.

Vertical HVAC vents use ribbed detailing that echoes the textured surfaces found in brutalist concrete work. The material palette of sage green leather and matte black surfaces maintains restraint. Every element serves spatial utility or tactile function rather than decorative purpose.

Two-Tone Strategy Manipulates Perceived Proportion

The exterior color blocking uses a technique borrowed directly from brutalist architecture. The matte champagne body contrasts with a glossy dark roof, pillars, and upper structure. This creates visual separation between the greenhouse and body, making the tall cabin appear to float above the lower mass. Brutalist buildings frequently use this strategy with concrete bases supporting glass or metal upper volumes.

The design outcome lowers the car’s visual center of gravity without sacrificing interior spaciousness. The dark upper structure recedes visually while the lighter body comes forward, creating the perception of a lower, wider stance than the actual proportions suggest. This allows Savio to maintain the original 1000 MB’s upright greenhouse geometry while avoiding the formal, almost sedan-like aesthetic that defined the 1960s coupe.

Design Intent Versus Brand Reality

The MBX concept exists within Škoda’s “Icons Get a Makeover” series, reinterpreting heritage models with no production intent. This creates a peculiar tension. The design demonstrates genuine problem-solving around spatial utility, access innovation, and material honesty. The split sliding doors, bench seat flexibility, and vertical cargo strategy represent practical design thinking rather than show car spectacle. Yet Škoda’s current lineup consists of rebadged Volkswagen Group platforms with minimal differentiation.

A production version of this design language could establish genuine brand identity beyond badge engineering. The brutalist aesthetic and spatial flexibility align with European urban use cases where compact footprints and cargo versatility matter more than acceleration metrics. But concept exercises without production pathways ultimately document what brands could build rather than what customers can buy. The MBX demonstrates that Škoda’s design team understands how proportion, geometry, and material reduction create presence. Whether that understanding reaches showrooms remains the unanswered question.

Nothing is launching its 5th Phone in One Year… Meet the Nothing 3a Lite

Carl Pei’s Nothing made its name on doing less, not more. The transparent back, the Glyph LEDs, the whole minimalist vibe felt like a breath of fresh air precisely because it was focused and deliberate. But in 2025, that clarity is getting fuzzy. Nothing has dropped five phones in a single year: the flagship Phone 3, the midrange Phone 3a and 3a Pro, the playful CMF Phone 2 Pro under its colorful sub-brand, and now, the budget-tier Phone 3a Lite. What started as a carefully curated lineup is starting to look more like the sprawling, confusing catalogues that legacy brands churn out. The transparent design that once screamed premium? Now available for under €250. The Glyph interface? Stripped down and simplified for affordability.

There’s a real danger here. Samsung’s endless Galaxy A-series, Xiaomi’s dizzying tangle of Redmi and Poco sub-brands, these weren’t born of creative vision. They were born of market saturation and the relentless need to fill every price bracket. Nothing’s rapid expansion is starting to feel uncomfortably similar, and for a brand that built its identity on curation and restraint, that’s risky. When every season brings a new model and your signature look becomes ubiquitous instead of aspirational, the mystique starts to evaporate. The question isn’t whether Nothing can make good phones at every tier, it’s whether the brand can survive its own success without losing what made it special in the first place.

And now, the Phone 3a Lite. Nothing officially confirmed that it’s launching globally on October 29, 2025, calling it the brand’s first true entry-level smartphone. The teaser shows a white phone with a transparent back and a single dot LED at the bottom-right corner, a dramatically pared-back version of the signature Glyph interface that originally had multiple lighting zones. The tagline, “Light up the everyday,” suggests this lone LED will handle basics like charging status and notifications, nothing more. It’s minimalism by necessity rather than choice, a cost-cutting measure disguised as design philosophy.

Here’s where things get interesting, and maybe a little messy. According to multiple leaks, the Phone 3a Lite is essentially a redesigned CMF Phone 2 Pro. That phone launched back in May with a MediaTek Dimensity 7300-Pro chipset, 8GB of RAM, a 6.77-inch 120Hz AMOLED display, and a 5000mAh battery with 33W charging. It was priced around ₹16,300 in India and £219 in the UK, and it was positioned as the most affordable way to get into the Nothing ecosystem, albeit under the CMF sub-brand. The CMF Phone 2 Pro leaned into fun, modularity, and bold colors. It came with swappable back panels, visible screws, and a bundled screwdriver. It was playful, practical, and unapologetically budget-conscious.

So what’s the Phone 3a Lite bringing to the table that the CMF Phone 2 Pro doesn’t already offer? Branding, mostly. The 3a Lite reportedly uses nearly identical internals but wraps them in the mainline Nothing aesthetic: transparent back, simplified Glyph system, and Nothing OS instead of CMF’s slightly stripped-down fork. It’s the same hardware, just wearing a different suit. The expected price is around €230 to €250 in Europe, which puts it only marginally more expensive than the CMF Phone 2 Pro, and likely around ₹19,000 to ₹21,000 in India. Sales are rumored to kick off in early November, just days after the official unveiling.

The overlap is hard to ignore. Both phones target budget buyers. Both use the same core specs. Both come from the same parent company. The difference is aesthetics and branding, which raises an obvious question: who is this for? If you want fun and modularity, the CMF Phone 2 Pro already exists. If you want the premium Nothing look, the Phone 3a starts at ₹22,999, just a few thousand rupees more. The 3a Lite sits awkwardly between them, offering neither the playful personality of CMF nor the full-featured experience of the Phone 3a. It’s a phone that exists because Nothing can make it, not because anyone was necessarily asking for it.

201 flip-flops turn Lafayette Anticipations into a living orchestra

 

Artist Meriem Bennani transforms the familiar flip-flop into a vibrating instrument of collective rhythm with her large-scale installation Sole Crushing, on view at Lafayette Anticipations in Paris until February 8th, 2026. The project fills the foundation’s entire vertical space with 201 flip-flops animated by a pneumatic system and synchronized to a musical composition created in collaboration with musician and producer Reda Senhaji (aka Cheb Runner).

 

Originally presented at Fondazione Prada in Milan (find designboom’s previous coverage here) and now entirely reimagined for Lafayette Anticipations, Sole Crushing becomes an immense polyphonic instrument. The installation invites visitors to wander through an organic environment of moving percussion instruments, including a sprawling island of sandals that crawl across the floor, vertical ladders and spiral structures covered in shoes, and a massive drum suspended from the top floor, commanding the whole ensemble. Each flip-flop, connected by two air tubes, strikes against materials like wood, plexiglass, fabric, or metal, producing a range of percussive tones that merge into a collective pulse.

Meriem Bennani channels collective energy through rhythm

 

Meriem Bennani’s rhythmic structure draws from Moroccan musical traditions, particularly dakka marrakchia, a ritual of drumming and chanting that builds to a peak of spiritual intensity. The Moroccan artist, together with Reda Senhaji, translates this energy into a contemporary orchestra, merging the hypnotic repetition of protest chants with the ecstatic cadence of football crowds and communal ceremonies. ‘I try to recreate moments of collective catharsis, rituals, atmospheres of big stadiums, and chaotic states of exaltation or revolt,’ Bennani says. ‘What interests me is to recreate what we feel in those moments of social utopia, where, without explanation, everyone knows what they are supposed to do within a group.’

 

The title Sole Crushing plays on the English expression ‘soul-crushing’, something emotionally numbing or draining, by swapping ‘soul’ for ‘sole.’ The pun literalizes the phrase through the slap of rubber soles beating rhythm and noise, evoking the sonic unity of bodies in motion. Bennani’s sandals become a democratic medium, being inexpensive, ubiquitous, and universally understood. The artist recalls being drawn to the flip-flop’s simplicity and material elasticity, its capacity to deform, bounce, and resist rigidity. ‘They’re polymorphic,’ she explains. ‘They can change shape and become something else. In a way, they escape the rigidity of authority and rules.’

 

This slipper, found everywhere from Moroccan markets to beach resorts, thus becomes a social metaphor. In Bennani’s hands, it symbolizes the tension between playfulness and resistance, the joyful, rebellious energy of the crowd. The artist connects the object’s humorous familiarity with its latent potential for dissent: the flip-flop as weapon, meme, or political symbol, from viral clips of shoes thrown at leaders to sculptures commemorating these gestures.

duende, dakka, and digital humor

 

Bennani’s installation channels the duende, the mysterious force described by Federico García Lorca as the soul that possesses the flamenco dancer, and fuses it with dakka marrakchia, the Moroccan tradition that summons transcendence through repetition. These cultural references are filtered through the artist’s signature language of irony and pop sensibility, merging high and low, sacred and absurd.

 

Air circulates through its pneumatic network like breath through lungs; rhythms ripple upward, guided not by a single conductor but by a collective pulse. Bennani likens this to the maâlem, the heartbeat figure in Moroccan ensembles, who leads through rhythm rather than authority.

 

In this work, Bennani extends her ongoing investigation into how bodies, technologies, and symbols shape shared experience. Her practice, which spans sculpture, video, and kinetic installation, combines realistic elements and fantasy to reveal the hybrid nature of contemporary culture.

This Stackable Sake Set Hides in Plain Sight

You know that feeling when you buy something beautiful for a special occasion, and then it just lives in your cupboard for the next eleven months? That’s the problem most sake sets have. They’re gorgeous when you’re using them, but the rest of the time they’re just taking up space in the back of a cabinet somewhere, waiting for the next dinner party or celebration.

The NON sake set was designed specifically to solve that problem. Created in collaboration with Somei Shikkiten, a lacquerware wholesaler that’s been around since 1923 in Sabae City (the heart of Echizen lacquerware country in Fukui Prefecture), this three-piece set does something clever: it transforms into a sculptural object when you’re not drinking from it.

Here’s how it works. The set includes a flat circular base, a shorter cup for warm sake called an ochoko, and a taller cup for chilled sake. When stacked together, they create this sleek, tapered cone shape that looks more like a contemporary art piece than drinkware. The dark lacquer finish lets the natural wood grain show through, giving each piece subtle texture and depth. You can leave it out on your counter or shelf, and it actually looks good there. It’s not screaming “I’m a sake set!” at anyone who walks by. It’s just quietly beautiful, blending into your space like any other well-designed object.

This matters more than you might think. Japanese sake brewing just got added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, which means sake culture is having a moment again, both in Japan and internationally. More people are curious about sake, wanting to try it, wanting to understand it. But there’s often this gap between traditional sake culture, with all its specific rituals and equipment, and the way most of us actually live today.

That’s where NON comes in. It’s not abandoning tradition, it’s adapting it. The set is made using traditional Echizen lacquerware techniques that have been refined over centuries. Lacquerware isn’t just pretty; it’s incredibly practical. It’s durable, it keeps drinks at the right temperature, and it has this warmth to it that glass and ceramic don’t quite match. The lacquer technique also highlights rather than hides the wood grain, creating a finish that feels both refined and organic. But instead of making something that only works for formal occasions, the designers thought about modern lifestyles. They thought about small apartments, open-plan living spaces, people who might not have room for dedicated storage for every single special-occasion item they own.

The design also acknowledges that sake isn’t just one thing. In summer, you might want it cold, refreshing, crisp. In winter, you might prefer it warm, comforting, almost like a gentle hug in a cup. Having both a chilled sake cup and a warm sake cup means you’re ready for either mood, any season. The different heights of the two cups aren’t just functional, they’re part of what makes the stacked form so visually interesting. And when those seasons change and you’re switching from one to the other, the pieces you’re not using don’t become clutter. They’re part of the same unified design, still contributing to the overall aesthetic even when they’re just sitting there.

There’s something really appealing about objects that serve multiple purposes without compromising on either function. NON doesn’t sacrifice being a good sake set in order to look good on your shelf, and it doesn’t sacrifice its appearance in order to be functional. It’s both, fully, at the same time. That’s harder to achieve than it sounds. The minimalist form could easily feel cold or generic, but the visible wood grain and hand-crafted lacquer finish keep it feeling warm and special.

The NON sake set feels like it gets the balance of tradition but also making sense for how we actually live. It respects the centuries of craftsmanship behind Echizen lacquerware and the cultural significance of sake drinking, while also understanding that most of us don’t have the luxury of space or the desire to hide beautiful things away until they’re “appropriate” to use. Sometimes the best design is the one that lets you enjoy something special any day of the week, not just on special occasions. And if it happens to look good doing it? Even better.
