Wheelhome turns Tesla Model 3 into ultimate electric rooftop camper with Dashaway eRC

You don’t necessarily need a van or a pickup truck to have a camping rig capable of going off-grid for weeks on end. Wheelhome believes Tesla’s popular Model 3 is an ideal candidate to transform into a camping legend with a roof camper that fits seamlessly against its curving roofline.

The British manufacturer has been building compact camper cars and tiny caravans for more than three decades, but this latest conversion (or installation, rather) gives EV campers something entirely new to think about. With no modifications required to the car per se, Wheelhome has been able to turn the Tesla Model 3 into an electric rooftop camper complete with a sofa cum bed, an equipped kitchen, a sink, and a portable toilet, all within the camper’s full standing room and naturally lighted interior.

The entire setup is made possible by mounting the Wheelhome Dashaway eRC (electric roof camper) onto the roof of the Model 3. Designed to sit on an additionally purchased Tesla roof rack and towbar, the Dashaway pop-up camping rig starts at about £23,400. It is a rooftop camper with a fast set-up time and an elevating roof, which adds roughly 150 kg of dead weight and turns the Tesla into a campervan-like facility for up to two people to share.

Dashaway eRC is a practical solution for the top of a Model 3 because, unlike the hard-sided rooftop tents, it has a nice standing height inside. The pod with a window and a mesh door offers ample natural light inside, while its fiberglass pop-up top keeps the construction lightweight and durable. The spacious interior cabin is good to sleep a couple and also cater to their daytime requirements with a two-seat rear-facing bench (that converts into a bed), plenty of storage just ahead.

The series of cabinetry is topped with a sink and a hideaway porta-potty (portable toilet). The folding counter and cabinets make space for a full-fledged kitchen, which can be packed with an induction cooktop, oven, microwave, and air fryer. Interestingly, the camper’s Water supply, compressor fridge, and the power bank reside behind the driver’s seat (converting the back into a two-seater bench). Behind the folding seats is Model 3’s boot, which is provided with storage containers (two of them a meter long each) for storing and transporting supplies.

You don’t need to be hooked up to a campsite for power; the camper’s battery can be powered by the car’s own low-voltage system, and the campsite electric grid can be used to charge the car battery, when required. The Wheelhome Dashaway eRC on the roof of the Model 3 is completely dismountable. According to the makers, it’s effortless, even a one-person can easily set up and remove the rooftop camper. Of course, you could wonder about the drag and range limitation with the Dashaway on the roof. Early tests suggest there are very few performance issues; yes, the speed takes a dip, but the camping solution doesn’t add more than 10 percent loss of the car’s range.

KAWS lands in renaissance florence with large-scale timber installation ‘the message’

‘Kaws: the message’ arrives at Palazzo Strozzi

 

A new large-scale installation, KAWS: THE MESSAGE occupies the Renaissance courtyard of Palazzo Strozzi in Florence. The work will stand within the arcaded courtyard from October 29th, 2025 to January 25th, 2026. The installation, commissioned by Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi and Fondazione Hillary Merkus Recordati, brings a pair of monumental wooden figures into one of the city’s most ordered public spaces.

 

Stepping into the open-air stone-paved loggia, the two sculptures each stand over six meters tall. Their material presence is warm and tactile to contrast with the cool grey stonework of the surrounding colonnade.

The timber installation KAWS: THE MESSAGE introduces a warmth into the courtyard’s otherwise stony atmosphere. The figures face each other across a low plinth, forming an axis aligned with the palace’s central passage. The symmetry of the courtyard amplifies their positioning: arches and windows appear to frame the dialogue between the two characters.

 

The artist’s use of wood rather than resin or metal allows the sculptures to absorb the light and shadow that shift throughout the day. Their smooth surfaces and minimal joints convey solidity while maintaining a subdued finish. The scale — imposing yet contained — makes the height of the loggia newly perceptible, and reveals how the architecture manages proportion and rhythm.

The installation coincides with Palazzo Strozzi’s exhibition dedicated to Fra Angelico, drawing a conceptual link between Renaissance painting and contemporary form. KAWS reinterprets the traditional theme of the Annunciation through his characters COMPANION and BFF, each absorbed by the glow of a mobile phone. The gesture translates a historic moment of revelation into a language of digital communication.

 

This correspondence unfolds spatially. The Renaissance courtyard, conceived as a civic meeting ground, becomes a place of suspended communication. Visitors pause under the arcades, aware of the height of the columns and the openness above. The work redefines the threshold between interior and exterior, private reflection and public encounter.

The initial impression is of stillness and scale. The two figures command attention but remain serene, their gestures understated. Sound gathers softly under the arcades — the scrape of shoes on stone, a faint echo that anchors the experience within the architecture. The wooden surface, faintly warm to the touch, contrasts with the cool air circulating through the courtyard.

 

Light defines much of the encounter. It enters from above, diffused by the surrounding loggia, casting shadows that elongate and merge with the columns. The figures catch the changing tones of day, from morning brightness to the low gold of evening. The architecture’s rhythm of arches and bays provides a slow visual cadence that complements the measured posture of the sculptures.

Remember the Reebok Pump? Nike’s Doing That with a Jacket

In 1989 Reebok introduced the Reebok Pump, a sneaker with internal chambers that users could pump air into by squeezing a ball on the tongue, tightening the fit. The shoe was a massive hit, and Reebok sold millions of units well into the 1990s.

Now, 36 years later, Nike’s got the same idea—but for a jacket. Their Therma-FIT Air Milano Jacket contains inflatable baffles that provide more or less insulation depending on the inflation. Nike says it offers “warmth levels that range from a lightweight hoodie to a mid-weight puffer.”

To inflate the jacket, you have to buy a pair of Reebok Pumps and attach them to a hose running up your leg to the jacket. Just kidding, wanted to see if anyone actually reads anymore.

The jacket is inflated via the included powered pump from Nike’s ACG sub-brand, which you attach to a valve near the left pocket. To deflate it, you press a button on the valve.

We assume the pump is USB-rechargeable; Nike doesn’t say. Inflating and deflating is said to take just seconds.

The Therma-FIT Air Milano jacket is so named because Team USA athletes will wear it at this year’s Winter Olympics in Milan. You should be able to spot it during the medal ceremonies.

Nike Just Made a Puffer Jacket You Can Inflate in 15 Seconds

Remember when Nike put air bubbles in sneakers and everyone thought it was the coolest thing ever? Well, the Swoosh just did it again, but this time with a jacket that you can literally pump up or deflate like an air mattress. Meet the Therma-Fit Air Milano Jacket, and yes, it’s as wild as it sounds.

The jacket, which Nike is calling its most technically engineered garment ever, features what the brand has dubbed A.I.R. Technology (that stands for Adapt. Inflate. Regulate., not artificial intelligence). At first glance, it looks like any other sleek Nike puffer. But here’s the clever part: you can adjust how puffy it actually is depending on how cold you are. No more sweating through your coat after walking up a flight of stairs or shivering because you dressed for the wrong temperature.

The concept is brilliantly simple. Instead of stuffing the jacket with down feathers or synthetic insulation like traditional puffers, Nike filled the baffles with air. Using a small pump (think inflatable pool toy, but make it fashion), you can inflate the jacket in about 15 seconds. Deflate it, and it compresses down to something closer to a lightweight windbreaker. Nike is marketing it as “four jackets in one,” which honestly isn’t far off.

This isn’t Nike’s first rodeo with inflatable outerwear. The brand experimented with air bladders in jackets for about two decades, most notably with the 2008 ACG Airvantage jacket that’s now a grailed collector’s item. But the Air Milano takes those early experiments and refines them with nearly five decades of Nike Air innovation (the same tech that revolutionized sneakers in 1978).

What makes this jacket particularly interesting from a design perspective is how it breaks free from traditional puffer construction. Most down jackets are limited by horizontal quilting patterns because you need those channels to keep the insulation evenly distributed. With air as the insulator, Nike’s designers could create body-mapped volumes and customize the jacket’s shape without those constraints. The result is a two-layer composite laminate material that can transition from slim to puffy in seconds while maintaining its structure.

Team USA athletes will debut the Air Milano at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan as part of their official medal ceremony look, which feels fitting given the jacket’s name. It’s a smart showcase for technology that sits at the intersection of performance, design, and just plain cool factor. After all, watching someone pump up their jacket courtside or in the stands is going to turn heads.

The jacket integrates with Nike’s broader FIT system, working alongside familiar technologies like Dri-Fit moisture-wicking and Storm-Fit weather protection. This positions the Air Milano not as some gimmicky one-off, but as part of Nike’s ongoing commitment to performance innovation that actually solves real problems. And the problem here is universal: temperature regulation during activity is annoying. You’re either too hot or too cold, constantly adding or removing layers like some sort of fashion onion. According to Danielle Kayembe, Expert in Apparel Product Innovation Management at Nike, the jacket represents a blend of athlete science and data-driven design to create responsive, engineered garments. The brand studied years of data illustrating the challenges of competing in cold weather before landing on this solution.

The big question, of course, is whether this will hit the consumer market, and if so, when. Nike hasn’t announced a release date yet, though they’ve confirmed it won’t be cheap when (or if) it does launch. For now, it remains a Team USA exclusive. Beyond the practical applications, the Air Milano is just fun. In an era where so much tech feels either invisible or overly complicated, there’s something refreshingly tactile about pumping up your jacket. It’s the kind of design that makes people ask, “Wait, what is that?” And in a market saturated with similar-looking puffers, that’s no small feat.

Whether the Air Milano becomes as iconic as the Air Max or remains a fascinating footnote in Nike’s innovation archives remains to be seen. But one thing’s certain: Nike just reminded us that sometimes the best innovations come from asking a simple question. If we can put air in shoes, why not jackets?

Automated Drone Docks for Disaster Relief and Catching Criminals

Last year a 7.6 earthquake hit Japan’s Noto Peninsula, generating a 37-foot tsunami. Hundreds of aftershocks, nearly a thousand mudslides and rampant fires ripped through the region, damaging or destroying over 200,000 structures. Nearly 700 people died, a further 1,400 were injured, and thousands across the region were cut off, locked in place due to unusable roads. Elderly and rural residents had it the worst.

A week after the quake, a quadrotor drone buzzed over impassable terrain, eventually reaching an evacuation center where residents were sheltering. The drone was carrying medication that they needed and had no other way of receiving.

A heavy lift drone was used to haul diesel fuel to residents and rescue workers.

In addition to ferrying supplies, Japanese municipalities are finding that drones are useful during disasters in other ways. A Tokyo-based company called Blue Innovation has developed the BEP Port system, a series of unmanned, weatherproof drone docks that can be scattered across the region.

They serve two functions. One is that when a tsunami alert comes in, the drone launches itself and broadcasts evacuation messages through its loudspeaker. The second function is to record its surroundings following a disaster, capturing video of damaged areas so that officials can assess how and where to respond. Both of these things avoid the need to engander human workers who would ordinarily do those tasks in person.

The Noto Reconstruction Office recently revealed another drone dock system they’re using, this one by California-based drone manufacturer Skydio:

I wasn’t able to learn much about Blue Innovation’s product, but the Skydio dock’s specs are well-documented. The drones can be launched in 20 seconds (the delay is because the drones give themselves a pre-flight check), then flown autonomously or by a remote operator anywhere in the world.

When docked, they charge while being protected from temperatures ranging from -4°F to 122°F.

The drones can use radio, 5G and/or Starlink to stream video back to a base station.

New Military Helmet Confers Video-Game-like Abilities

In Mark Bowden’s book “Black Hawk Down,” he notes that young soldiers repeatedly describe the shocking surreality of combat as “like being in a movie.” As the book covers events that occurred in 1993, these soldiers have no other frame of reference.

The soldier of today grew up in a very different world, and in future, will surely describe combat as “like being in a video game.” Particularly now that this EagleEye, an AI-powered helmet system developed by defense technology company Anduril, has been created.

The EagleEye pulls in information not only from its front and rear cameras, but from data sensors across the battlefield: Real-time drone footage, fellow soldiers’ helmets, intelligence coming from HQ. Built-in AI aggregates the information and projects it onto a heads-up display showing friendly and enemy positions, fields of fire and mapped objectives. These are presented using a combination of AR overlays and a video-game-like circular map.

The helmet’s built-in hearing protection muffles the sound of gunfire, but audio sensors can also pinpoint the locations of gunfire; signals sensors can locate nearby cell phones and radios.

In a sensor-rich environment, the helmet essentially gives the soldier X-ray vision and an unparalleled situational awareness. And yes, it all looks like something you’d see in a video game:

That said, the moment the soldiers walk behind the shipping container does indeed remind me of a movie, “Total Recall.”

The EagleEye was privately developed by Anduril and presented to the U.S. Army, who has greenlit active field prototyping. A hundred or so units will be delivered next year for evaluation.
