Perched atop a challenging 45-percent slope in the Hollywood Hills, this striking residence by Kristen Becker of Mutuus Studio reimagines what luxury living can look like within a modest footprint. Completed in 2016, the house was commissioned by an actor-director couple who wanted their Los Angeles home to feel as intimate and carefully curated as their New York City penthouse loft. The steep, oak-dotted hillside presented serious design challenges, but Becker transformed these constraints into architectural opportunities that give the home its distinctive character.

Becker drew inspiration from the clients’ travels through Ireland and their fascination with European castles, creating a sequence of spaces that unfold with theatrical drama. Visitors enter through a wooden, steel, and concrete bridge that spans a secret garden before arriving at an imposing bronze door. The garden connects to a courtyard where sunlight filters through floor-to-ceiling windows into the bathroom below, evoking the atmospheric quality of ancient fortresses. Medieval castles and industrial buildings both influenced the aesthetic, resulting in a design that feels simultaneously raw and refined.

The multi-storey structure steps down the hillside rather than fighting against it, allowing each level to capture different views of the surrounding landscape dotted with shrubs, cacti, and mature oak trees. Natural light floods the interiors through expansive glazing, while a garage-style door in the main living area lifts upward to dissolve the boundary between inside and out. This connection to the terrace extends the living space and takes full advantage of California’s temperate climate. The steel and concrete structure provides the industrial backbone that supports the home’s open, flowing layout.

Interior design played an equally important role in the project, with Becker collaborating closely with the clients on furnishings that reflect their globetrotting lifestyle and eclectic taste. The living room showcases caramel leather sofas alongside leopard-print stools and a bronze and glass coffee table by Willy Daro. African artwork hangs near pieces from Brian Henson’s childhood collection. The dining area features a Finn Juhl teak table surrounded by Peter Moos chairs, all illuminated by a custom Facaro bicycle chain chandelier that adds unexpected whimsy.

Throughout the home, vintage pieces from different eras and continents sit comfortably together. Ricardo Fasanello’s Anel chair shares space with Bruno Mathsson’s Pernilla Lounge Chair, antique Chinese sideboards, vintage Japanese benches, and a Norman Cherner swivel chair from the 1960s. An Arc dome pendant by Allied Maker illuminates a vintage Warren Bacon saddle stool. Every element received thoughtful consideration, with the design team and owners collaborating to ensure each piece contributed to a seamless experience of place.

Urwerk and Ulysse Nardin’s $122K UR-Freak Watch Might Be The Most Interesting Collab Of 2025

The Ulysse Nardin Freak has always been more of a horological platform than a static model. Since its debut, it has served as a canvas for the brand’s most forward-thinking ideas, from pioneering silicon components to its signature “movement as the hand” display. It was the watch that proved a piece of high watchmaking could look and function like nothing that came before it. Now, for the first time, Ulysse Nardin has opened that platform to an outside collaborator.

It is fitting that the partner is Urwerk, another independent force that has consistently challenged the conventions of time display. Instead of a simple cosmetic update, the two brands co-developed a new caliber that integrates Urwerk’s wandering hour satellites into the Freak’s rotating carousel. The watch is still fundamentally a Freak, using its entire movement to indicate the time, but the language it speaks is now filtered through Urwerk’s sci-fi, dashboard-inspired lens.

What makes this partnership click is the deep mechanical fusion they achieved. The purpose-built UN-241 caliber is proof of this, a movement born from over 150 new components designed to get these two very different systems to play nice. You can see Ulysse Nardin’s massive silicon oscillator beating right in the middle, the technical heart of the machine. But orbiting around it is an assembly that is pure Urwerk. The three satellite arms, each carrying a rotating hour block, are mounted directly onto the Freak’s carousel, creating a layered, kinetic sculpture. You are looking at a Ulysse Nardin movement carrying an Urwerk complication like a backpack, all rotating as one cohesive unit.

Even with all that movement, reading the time is surprisingly straightforward. Your eye is drawn to the right side of the watch, where a single active satellite points a bright yellow arrow toward a linear minute track. The number on the corresponding hour block gives you the hour. It is an intuitive system, a classic Urwerk touch, but it’s made more dynamic by the constant, slow rotation of the Freak platform underneath. It feels like Urwerk’s dashboard display has been mounted on a revolving space station.

The 44 mm silhouette is clearly from the Freak ONE, with its crownless architecture and smooth, sandblasted titanium. But you can see Urwerk’s influence in the fluted, notched sections of the bezel, which add an industrial texture that feels different from the Freak’s usually sleek profile. You still set the time by rotating this bezel, secured by a locking tab at six o’clock that now reads “UR-FREAK.” It is a clear signal that this is a Freak that has been properly Urwerk-ified. The electric yellow strap, Urwerk’s calling card, drives the point home, a splash of aggressive color against the muted gray case.

Getting one will not be easy, or cheap. The UR-Freak is a limited run of just 100 pieces, and with a price tag of around 122,200 USD, it is aimed squarely at serious collectors in the independent scene. For those looking to acquire one, inquiries will have to be made directly to either brand. The UR-Freak is the kind of watch that makes you wonder why it did not happen sooner, and at the same time, be amazed that it happened at all.

This Shape-Shifting Classroom Setup Lets Students Build Their Own Learning Space

This Open-Source Retropunk Computer Solves Distraction by Removing Everything Except Writing

Your laptop can do anything, which increasingly means it’s optimized for nothing. This isn’t a new observation, but the solutions have mostly been software-based: distraction-blocking apps, focus modes, website blockers that you can disable the moment willpower falters. The Typeframe project takes a more permanent approach – build a computer that literally cannot do anything except let you write.

Jeff Merrick’s open-source writerdeck designs come in two flavors. The PX-88 is a desktop-style portable with a full keyboard and integrated screen, styled after the 1985 Epson PX-4 that inspired it. The PS-85 shrinks down to a 40% keyboard layout while maintaining that same retro-futuristic aesthetic. Both use Raspberry Pi boards as their brains, and both are documented with the kind of step-by-step detail that assumes you’ve never touched CAD software or soldered components together.

There’s active discussion on Reddit’s r/cyberDeck forum, open-source software projects like WareWoolf and ZeroWriter built specifically for distraction-free writing, and a thriving market for vintage AlphaSmart Neo devices – basically the original writerdecks from the early 2000s that are still beloved for their springy keyboards and complete lack of internet connectivity.

Merrick freely admits this is his first project at this scale, and he’s documented it with that beginner perspective intact. Generative AI has the power to create music, images, content and videos from your input. Now, someone believes that not only words and text, but even memories need to be created into music. If you talk about preserving memories, photo frames and albums (digital or physical) are the best options that come to mind. Now memo:reel (yes, it’s an interesting wordplay) is designed to let you transform your memories into music and art.

This emotion-driven AI device for music and art generation is conceptualized to allow each recorded emotion to be expressed through sound and visuals. And for this, one part of it is designed to resemble a traditional cassette player, whose speakers are used to play the created sounds. The recording and generation are done on separate devices. The idea behind the memoreel concept is to provide users with a new way to reconnect with themselves through the creative interpretation of their emotions.

To simply understand, memoreel uses a combination of the records of your daily moments and emotions and generative AI that creates music and artwork from these emotions, so you can relive them in a new format. The device basically comprises three primary units: a Speaker, a Frame, and the Record unit. The recording unit – a note taker (for written and verbal input) passes the recorded moments and emotions you want to remember either to the Frame (a monitor-like device) or the speaker unit (which is the cassette player-like contraption).

The Frame is a tiny monitor that generates and replays your emotional input as your own artwork, while the Speaker generates and replays them as your own music. The Speaker unit here is not just a look-alike of the cassette player; in fact, with its tactile knobs, it functions like one. In addition, a reminiscent façade – with a cassette-like slot for the Record unit – the top of the Speaker has a volume knob, a Track knob, and a power switch to turn the system on and off.

So, record your memories and emotions into layers of records and they turn them into music in your own sound. Yes, the memoreel’s built-in AI allows you to record your voice and then learns your voice and creates music sung in your own tone. You can pick the genre and style, enter prompts to express your mood and your own song comes to life that you can listen to or get others involved in your mood.

If the Speaker captures the nostalgic sensibility of a retro cassette player, the Frame is a rendition of a television set with a recording antenna on the top, a power switch at the back, and an interesting memory knob on the front. The knob lets you change between different memory-based artworks. Making things most interesting is the Note unit, which can attach to the back of your smartphone to record your emotions and feelings on the go.

E-ink Vocabulary Card E2 Fits Language Learning Into a Gum Pack

Most language learning apps live on phones, competing with notifications, social media, and every other distraction fighting for your attention. Opening Duolingo between classes usually turns into five minutes of vocabulary followed by twenty minutes of scrolling through feeds you’ve already checked twice. Designers are starting to build tiny, single-purpose devices that turn fragmented time into focused practice instead of another excuse to stare at your phone screen until your eyes hurt.

The E-ink Vocabulary Card E2 is one of those tools, a chewing-gum-sized e-ink vocabulary device aimed at students but usable by anyone learning a new language. It pairs with a phone via Bluetooth to pull in study materials and memory modes from an app, then lets you review words on a 2.7-inch e-ink screen without opening your phone. It’s small enough to live in a pocket yet designed to feel like a dedicated learning tool.

The form factor is remarkably simple. A slim rectangular bar about the size of a pack of gum, weighing only thirty grams. Rounded corners, soft edges, and a two-tone color scheme in orange, pink, green, or grey make it look friendly and approachable. The main action button is tilted at five degrees, tuned for thumb reach when you hold it in one hand, while the simple layout keeps the interaction logic easy to understand.

The 2.7-inch e-ink touch screen is the real selling point. Low blue light and low radiation make it easier on the eyes than a phone, and the high contrast gives a reading experience close to paper. Because e-ink only draws power when the screen changes, the device can reach around one hundred fifty days of standby time, which means it’s always ready when you pull it out between classes or on a commute.

E2 connects to a mobile app over Bluetooth. The device supports nine built-in languages, and the app lets you import more content and choose different study modes or memory patterns that match your learning style. You can load word lists, practice exercises, and review sessions, then leave the phone in your bag while the card handles the actual on-the-go practice.

The IP68 protection rating makes the card dust-tight and waterproof enough for more adventurous use. The renders show it in a gym, on a train, and even in a futuristic space scene, reinforcing that it’s meant to live in pockets and hands without babying. This Opera House Design Has No Back and You Can Walk on the Roof

Picture an opera house that doesn’t just sit on its waterfront site but flows across it like sound waves spreading through the air. That’s exactly what Bjarke Ingels Group has cooked up for Hamburg’s new State Opera, and honestly, it’s one of those designs that makes you rethink what a cultural building can be in the 21st century.

The Danish architecture firm just won an international competition to replace Hamburg’s aging 1950s opera house with something that feels less like a fortress of high culture and more like an urban living room. Located on the Baakenhöft peninsula in HafenCity, right where the city meets the water, the new building reads as a landscape of concentric terraces that ripple outward from the central performance hall. Ingels himself describes it as terraces “emanating like soundwaves,” which is pretty poetic for a guy known for turning ideas into buildable reality.

What makes this project so interesting is how it completely ditches the traditional opera house playbook. You know the type: imposing facades, grand staircases that separate the cultured elite from everyone else, buildings that basically scream “not for you” to anyone walking by. The 450,000-square-foot building is designed as what they call “a public building within a park,” where the roofscape is fully walkable and the structure has no defined back side.

Think about that for a second. An opera house with no rear elevation. Instead of creating a building that sits apart from its surroundings, the design treats the entire structure as an extension of HafenCity’s public realm. The terraced exterior becomes a landscaped garden that rises to meet the main volume, creating what amounts to a human-made topography where people can hang out, walk their dogs, or just watch the sunset over the harbor regardless of whether they have tickets to La Bohème that evening.

This democratization of space isn’t just good PR. It represents a fundamental shift in how we think about cultural institutions and their relationship to the communities they serve. Opera houses have historically been exclusive spaces, both architecturally and culturally. By making the building itself permeable and accessible, BIG is suggesting that even if you’re not an opera fan, this building still belongs to you. It’s your park, your gathering space, your piece of waterfront.

The design also responds smartly to its context. Hamburg’s existing opera house served the city well for decades, but it reflects a different era’s ideas about urban culture and public space. The new location in HafenCity, a rapidly developing waterfront district that’s become one of Europe’s largest urban regeneration projects, demanded something that could anchor a neighborhood still finding its identity. Rather than plopping down a monument, BIG created something that extends and enhances the existing urban fabric.

From a technical standpoint, the rippling terrace concept isn’t just aesthetically pleasing. It creates multiple entry points and circulation paths, distributes the building’s mass in a way that feels less imposing, and provides outdoor social spaces at various levels. The design incorporates advanced acoustic engineering to ensure world-class sound inside while maintaining that crucial connection to the outside world.

There’s also something refreshingly playful about the whole concept. Comparing the terraces to sound waves or ripples on water isn’t just architectural marketing speak. It creates a visual metaphor that helps people understand what the building is trying to do before they ever step inside. The opera makes sound, sound travels in waves, and those waves become the literal form of the building. It’s the kind of concept-driven design that Ingels has become famous for, where big ideas translate into built form in ways that feel both intellectually satisfying and just plain cool to look at.

Will this design single-handedly make opera accessible to the masses? Probably not. But it removes at least one barrier by creating a building that invites you in rather than keeping you out. And in a world where cultural institutions are constantly wrestling with questions of relevance and accessibility, that architectural gesture matters. Hamburg’s getting more than a new opera house. It’s getting a new kind of public space that just happens to have a world-class performance hall at its center.

The smart earring looks like a regular piece of jewelry with sensors hidden behind the wearer’s ear. It certainly looks discrete and wouldn’t give out its actual existence until someone really goes deep into finding it out. Notably, Lumia 2 is also attachable to an existing ear-stud, if you want.

While we contemplate the viability of the Lumia 2’s ability to measure blood flow and the feature’s practical usage, let’s take a moment to understand what else the smart earring brings to the table and challenges the other types of wearables in the market. In addition to monitoring the body’s blood flow, Lumia 2 can also track heart rate variability and resting heart rate to notify the wearer when their body is ready for running, exercising, or indulging in a strenuous physical activity.

In addition to knowing how ready your heart is to face the world, with the Lumia 2 clipped onto your ear, you can also track how well you have slept overnight. It can also do the pedometer stuff and keep track of your step count. The Lumia 2 provides information about how to increase the blood flow or recover from its shooting levels, along with information regarding how hydrated or stressed you are while running or through the reps in the gym. With a decent battery life of up to eight days, the Lumia 2, starting at $249, should make a statement wearable when it’s launched in the near future.
