Mexico Just Turned Corn Waste Into 3D-Printed Buildings

Most of us think of corn as food. Maybe fuel, if you’re feeling generous. But a building material? That’s the kind of idea that sounds like it belongs in a sci-fi pitch until you look at what Mexico-based design practice MANUFACTURA has been quietly pulling off.

Their project is called CORNCRETL, and it is exactly what it sounds like: a bio-based construction material made largely from corn waste. Specifically, it combines limestone aggregates, dried corn residues, and recycled nejayote, which is the calcium-rich wastewater left over from nixtamalization, the ancient process of soaking corn in an alkaline solution that’s been used across Mesoamerica for thousands of years. That liquid, normally discarded after making tortillas and tamales, turns out to be a surprisingly useful ingredient in a next-generation building composite.

The name CORNCRETL is a clever mashup of corn and concrete, and the concept sits at the crossroads of ancestral knowledge and cutting-edge fabrication. MANUFACTURA drew direct references from pre-Hispanic Mayan construction techniques, which relied heavily on lime-based materials long before Portland cement ever existed. What they’ve done is take that legacy and run it through a robotic arm.

To produce the material, nixtamal waste is collected, dried, shredded, and pulverized down to a consistent particle size that works for extrusion. It’s then blended with mineral aggregates and organic binders to create a printable mixture. Printability tests were conducted using a WASP Concrete HD Continuous Feeding System integrated with a KUKA robotic arm, meaning the building process is precise, automated, and repeatable. The result doesn’t just look like a structural material. It performs like one.

One of the biggest knocks against conventional concrete is its carbon footprint. Cement production alone is responsible for a significant chunk of global CO2 emissions. CORNCRETL addresses this head-on. Compared to standard concrete, the material achieves up to a 70 percent reduction in carbon emissions. Part of that comes from how lime-based systems work: unlike Portland cement, they harden at room temperature and require lower calcination temperatures during production, which means less energy and fewer greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere.

Lime also brings a few bonus features to the table. It naturally regulates humidity and has self-healing properties for minor surface cracks, meaning the material can repair small imperfections on its own over time. For a building material, that’s a pretty remarkable quality.

The motivation behind CORNCRETL goes beyond just making something cool out of kitchen scraps. Mexico’s construction sector carries real environmental and social weight. Across the country, 64 percent of all waste is organic, and corn is a major contributor to that figure. At the same time, construction labor conditions remain difficult, with limited access to technical training and high occupational risk. MANUFACTURA’s approach proposes a circular material strategy that tries to address both sides of that problem, reducing waste while introducing more automated, accessible fabrication methods into the building industry.

The project has already moved beyond the lab. A full-scale prototype was built at the Shamballa open-air laboratory in Northern Italy, which is a long way from Mexico City but signals exactly the kind of cross-continental interest that a material like this can generate. It’s the kind of proof-of-concept that transforms a research idea into something you can actually stand next to.

CORNCRETL is led by designer Dinorah Schulte and project director Edurne Morales, with contributions from structural engineers and 3D printing specialists who helped optimize the material for real-world application.

What makes this project stick is that it doesn’t ask you to choose between tradition and technology. It holds both at once. Ancient techniques meet robotic fabrication. Food system waste becomes architectural possibility. And corn, of all things, might just have a future in the walls around us.

Portugal Just Built a Greenhouse That Travels the City on Wheels

There’s a little yellow greenhouse rolling through the city of Braga, Portugal, and it might just be one of the most charming design ideas to come out of architecture in recent memory. Not a concept render, not a speculative project sitting behind museum velvet ropes. It’s real, it’s on wheels, and it’s on a mission to bring seeds and green spaces to the neighborhoods that need them most.

The project is called Sementeira Ambulante, which translates to “Mobile Seedbed” in English. It was designed by Portuguese firm LIMIT Architecture Studio for the Festival Forma da Vizinhança, part of Braga 25, the city’s year as Portuguese Capital of Culture. The name alone tells you everything about its spirit: this is a greenhouse that refuses to stay put.

The backstory starts at the Quinta da Armada urban farm, which sits in one of Braga’s denser urban pockets, wedged between the rear facade of a shopping center and a residential building. On paper, it sounds like an unlikely setting for a garden. But that’s exactly the point. The farm is a quiet, vibrant refuge, a small green oasis thriving in a place no one would think to look for one. LIMIT Architecture Studio saw that energy and asked a simple but brilliant question: what if the farm could move?

The answer is a structure made of eight modular aluminum units mounted on wheels, wrapped in polycarbonate panels and curved sheet metal. The result is something that looks like a cross between a sci-fi capsule and an old-school market cart, all in a warm, eye-catching yellow. It covers just over four square meters, but its footprint on the city’s imagination is considerably larger.

What makes the Sementeira Ambulante genuinely clever is its dual personality. When it’s parked at the Quinta da Armada farm, it functions as a working greenhouse, a controlled environment for seed germination. The polycarbonate panels let in light while protecting the seedlings inside. The structure holds everything the plants need to get their start. But the moment those wheels start rolling, the whole thing transforms into something else entirely: a mobile ambassador for urban farming.

As it travels through Braga’s neighborhoods, the structure distributes seeds to communities across the city. It raises awareness of urban gardens, pulls people into conversations about food, nature, and green spaces, and brings the farm physically into neighborhoods that might not have any greenery of their own. The design is doing social work just as much as architectural work.

There’s also something deeply intentional about the materials and the scale. Polycarbonate panels are practical, lightweight, and translucent, exactly what you’d want for a structure that needs to travel and let light through. Curved sheet metal gives the form a sculptural quality that makes it feel like an object worth looking at, worth stopping for. At just over four square meters, it’s small enough to navigate city streets but substantial enough to function as a real working space. Nothing about it feels like an afterthought.

The project was curated by Space Transcribers and completed in collaboration with Landra. It sits within a broader cultural conversation about what cities owe their residents, particularly when it comes to access to nature, food production, and community-driven spaces. The Sementeira Ambulante doesn’t answer that conversation with grand gestures or expensive infrastructure. It answers it with eight modules, four wheels, and a bag of seeds.

Urban farming has been gaining serious traction globally for years, but most interventions are fixed: rooftop gardens, community plots, vertical farms attached to buildings. What LIMIT Architecture Studio has done is challenge that assumption entirely. Why should the farm stay in one place when the people who need it are spread across an entire city?

The Sementeira Ambulante is a reminder that good design doesn’t always mean building something permanent. Sometimes it means building something mobile, something alive, something that shows up in your neighborhood one morning like a small yellow miracle and leaves a packet of seeds behind.

Could a Nintendo “Switch 2 Lite” Be Closer Than We Think? The Rumors Hint At A 2027 Date

The Switch 2 barely celebrated its first birthday and yet here we are already whispering about what comes next. That’s the “Nintendo Effect”, really. The company trains us to speculate obsessively, and honestly, the rumor mill right now is giving us plenty of material to work with. So let’s lean into it: is a Switch 2 Pro or some kind of premium hardware revision actually on the horizon sooner than expected? The signs are quietly pointing toward yes, and it’s worth getting excited about.

The most tantalizing breadcrumb dropped just last month. A sharp-eyed Bluesky user going by the handle Dootsky.re dug through Nintendo’s Account Portal and found an unused hardware model code labeled “OSM.” For reference, the Switch 2’s own model code is “BEE,” and the original Switch used “HAC,” with “HAD” reserved for its later battery-upgraded variants. The fact that “OSM” already exists in Nintendo’s backend infrastructure, and that requesting it actually returns an image of a Switch 2, is the kind of detail that quietly screams “something is cooking.” Nintendo doesn’t register model codes for fun.

What could OSM stand for? Speculation has been predictably wild. One theory floating around Reddit suggests it means “Ounce Small Model,” pointing toward a Switch 2 Lite with a reduced footprint and lower price point. That theory makes a lot of sense given the Switch 2’s $450 launch price, which stung more than a few buyers and left a sizeable chunk of Nintendo’s potential audience watching from the sidelines. A leaner, cheaper variant that strips out the dock functionality but keeps the core gaming experience intact would be a very Nintendo move, and it would open up the platform to an entirely new demographic.

But another theory carries just as much electricity. Some observers are reading “OSM” as a pointer toward an OLED model, a Switch 2 that finally gives the people what the Switch 2’s launch arguably should have delivered from day one: a proper OLED display. The current Switch 2 runs a 7.9-inch LCD, which is perfectly fine but feels like a missed opportunity when you consider that the original Switch OLED was basically the definitive version of that console. An OLED-equipped Switch 2 with a refined chip process could genuinely be the “Switch 2 Pro” that players have been quietly hoping for, one that offers a noticeably upgraded portable experience without requiring an entirely new software library.

And that’s the thing: a hardware revision in the Switch family has always been more of a premium upgrade than a generational leap. Nintendo’s historical cadence backs this up beautifully. The original Switch launched in 2017. The Lite arrived in 2019. The OLED landed in 2021. Apply that roughly two-year rhythm to the Switch 2 timeline, and a revised model somewhere in 2027 sits right on schedule. But here’s where it gets interesting: the “OSM” code is already sitting in Nintendo’s systems, which suggests development is well underway. Hardware doesn’t appear in account portals by accident. The Most Advanced Camping Pillow of 2026 Looks Like It Grew in a Forest

Nature has been solving the problem of lightweight, load-bearing structure for hundreds of millions of years. Chen Xu, designing for RestBase, decided to take notes. The Camp Napper is a portable camping pillow whose form is derived from two specific biological sources: the surface texture of fungal spores, which informed the pillow’s contact face, and the hollow vascular structure of plant stems, which shaped its core. The outcome is a product that performs as well as it looks.

Using Voronoi polygon modelling, the design team mapped how pressure from a sleeping head distributes across the pillow’s surface, then engineered protrusions and recesses to respond to that data. The front face features raised cellular structures that increase the contact area between pillow and skin, improving comfort while simultaneously channelling airflow to keep things cool. The back face offers four distinct tactile zones depending on orientation, giving users a degree of customisation that is rare in camping gear. Also, a little warning but: trypophobia alert.

The core replicates the hollow geometry found in plant stems, achieving a structure that sheds mass without compromising its ability to hold form under repeated compression. Total weight lands at around 400 grams, and the whole pillow compresses into its storage bag at roughly the dimensions of a water cup, making it genuinely packable rather than merely marketed as such.

Memory foam was selected for its ability to conform to different sleepers while maintaining the structural geometry of the bionic surface. Anti-slip rubber particles on the base keep the pillow in place across the varied surfaces camping tends to involve, from sleeping pads to camp chairs to hotel floors. RestBase positions the Camp Napper across indoor and outdoor contexts, and the material specification backs that up without demanding a different product for each one.

The project ran from March to December 2024 in Beijing, with the team conducting pressure simulations using volunteer data before building the mathematical model that generated the bionic surface structure. Mold development required continuous adjustment of material ratios and foaming parameters to meet yield and appearance standards. The finished product carries all of that process lightly, presenting as something organic and considered rather than laboured. For a category where most innovation stops at inflation valves and stuff sacks, that is a meaningful place to arrive.

The set recreates the Ane Maersk, the world’s first large dual-fuel container ship capable of operating on methanol in addition to conventional marine fuels. Built for global shipping giant Maersk, the real vessel represents a tangible shift toward lower-emission cargo transport. Attention to detail defines the experience. The bridge section can be opened to reveal interior elements, including crew quarters and operational spaces, while transparent panels along the engine room provide a subtle look into the vessel’s mechanical core. Slide-out gangways on both sides add a functional layer, breaking up the otherwise monolithic structure of the hull. The containers themselves are individually buildable, reflecting the modular logic of real-world cargo operations.

The build process balances repetition with refinement. As with any container ship, assembling multiple cargo units introduces a rhythm to the construction, but it also reinforces the scale and realism of the finished model. Subtle printed elements and carefully placed decals capture the Maersk branding without overwhelming the clean blue-and-white color scheme associated with the company’s fleet.

This release also marks the return of a collaboration that has been absent for over a decade. LEGO and Maersk have partnered in the past on maritime-themed sets, most notably the Maersk Line Triple-E from 2014. The new dual-fuel container vessel continues that lineage while anchoring it in contemporary sustainability efforts. Instead of revisiting nostalgia alone, the set connects to a current industry shift toward alternative fuels and reduced environmental impact.

Meta Wants to Put an AI Health Tracker on Your Wrist in 2026. What Could Go Wrong??

Meta is building a smartwatch, and it wants to know your heart rate, your sleep patterns, your activity levels, and whatever else it can pull from a sensor pressed against your skin all day. The device is codenamed Malibu 2, it’s targeting a 2026 launch, and by most accounts it sounds like a perfectly competent health wearable. The problem isn’t the hardware. The problem is the company attached to it.

This is the same Meta that just faced congressional scrutiny over social media addiction today. The same Meta whose smart glasses are reportedly inching toward facial recognition. The same Meta that filed a patent for Project Lazarus, a system designed to generate posthumous content from deceased users, because apparently your data doesn’t stop being useful to them just because you do. Handing your most intimate biometric information to that company is a case study in one.

To be fair, the product itself has a coherent logic behind it. Meta’s Ray-Ban Display glasses have been received surprisingly well by the press, and the neural wristband that ships with them, which uses electromyography to read muscle signals and translate them into gestures, only works with those glasses. That’s a real limitation. A smartwatch that absorbs that gesture-control functionality while adding health tracking and a persistent AI assistant would close a gap that currently makes the whole setup feel incomplete. From a pure product strategy standpoint, Malibu 2 makes sense.

The hardware ambitions have also matured since Meta’s first attempt at a smartwatch, which was scrapped in 2022 after accumulating plans for detachable cameras and metaverse tie-ins that never quite added up to a coherent device. Malibu 2 is reportedly focused on health tracking and Meta AI integration, which is a much cleaner pitch. The company already has a working partnership with Garmin, visible in the Oakley Vanguard sports glasses and a neural band demo at CES 2026 inside a Garmin-powered car concept. If there’s a natural manufacturing and platform partner for this watch, Garmin is the obvious candidate.

Meta is also reportedly developing the watch to sit alongside updated Ray-Ban Display glasses, internally called Hypernova 2, with both devices likely to be unveiled at Meta Connect in September. The Phoenix mixed reality glasses, meanwhile, have been pushed to 2027 partly because Meta’s executives were concerned about releasing too many devices at once and confusing consumers. That’s a reasonable concern. It’s also a little rich coming from a company whose current product lineup already includes smart glasses with a separate neural band that only controls one device.

The wearables market is genuinely ready for a credible third competitor alongside Apple and Samsung, and Meta has the AI infrastructure and the existing glasses ecosystem to make Malibu 2 compelling from launch. But compelling and trustworthy are different things, and Meta has spent twenty years demonstrating which one it prioritizes. Your Apple Watch data sits in Apple’s ecosystem, behind a company that has made privacy a marketing pillar and a legal battleground. Your Malibu 2 data sits with a company that patented a way to keep monetizing you after you die.

This Hermès x Bialetti Moka Pot Concept Has No Business Looking This Good

If you follow concept design on social media, there’s a good chance you’ve already stumbled across Jane Morelli’s work. She’s the designer behind that Lacoste x Bialetti moka pot that went viral not too long ago, and now she’s back with something that somehow manages to feel even more covetable. For the Year of the Horse, she has created a concept coffee set that imagines what a Hermès x Bialetti collaboration could look like, and the result is genuinely breathtaking.

To be clear, this is not a real product. It’s a speculative design concept, an unofficial creative exploration that Morelli put together entirely on her own. Neither Hermès nor Bialetti has signed off on it, and there’s no indication it will ever hit shelves. But that hasn’t stopped the internet from losing its collective mind over it, and once you see it, you’ll understand why.

The concept draws on two things that already go together better than most people realize. Hermès has deep equestrian roots. The brand was originally founded as a harness and saddle workshop, and the horse has been central to its identity ever since. That iconic logo featuring a horse-drawn Duc carriage pays homage to the brand’s equestrian beginnings and still appears on every box and ribbon the brand produces today. So when a designer decides to celebrate the Year of the Horse, Hermès is a natural fit.

Bialetti, meanwhile, has its own kind of cult status. The Moka Express, invented by Alfonso Bialetti in 1933, completely changed how people made coffee at home. That eight-sided stovetop brewer became one of the most recognizable objects in design history, sitting comfortably in the same conversation as the Eames chair or the Anglepoise lamp. It’s Italian, it’s timeless, and it’s on millions of kitchen counters around the world.

Morelli’s concept merges both worlds with a detail-oriented love for both brands that really shows. The moka pot gets the full Hermès treatment: a rich burnt orange body with a cream horse silhouette painted on its side, and a three-dimensional horse figurine standing on top of the lid in place of the usual knob. It’s playful without being loud, sculptural without being impractical. The color palette, that signature Hermès orange paired with warm cream and a cognac brown handle, feels completely at home on a stovetop.

The espresso cup might be the most charming piece of the set. A sculpted horse head forms the top of the handle, with the body flowing down into a ribbed, flowing tail that curves back up to meet the cup. The saucer takes the shape of a horseshoe, with the spoon resting neatly in the groove on one side. Every element has been thought through, which is what sets a great concept apart from a quick render.

The whole set comes presented in a walnut wooden box lined with cream fabric, with “Hermès x Bialetti: Year of the Horse” inscribed on the inside of the lid. Even the packaging looks like something you’d want to display on a shelf rather than throw away. It’s the kind of unboxing experience that luxury brands have mastered, and Morelli has translated that into her concept with impressive accuracy.

What makes this design so compelling is how it sits at the intersection of craft, culture, and storytelling. The Year of the Horse in the Chinese zodiac is associated with energy, freedom, and elegance, all qualities that feel right at home in both the Hermès and Bialetti universes. Morelli didn’t just slap two logos together and call it a day. She built a visual language that feels native to both brands, which is no small feat. It’s a concept, yes. But the best concepts do exactly what this one does: they make you want something that doesn’t exist yet, and they make you wonder why nobody has done it already.

Custom-built 96,000mAh power bank charges your laptop, phone, and even runs small appliances off-grid

For power users loaded with a laptop, tablet, drone, a robot, and, of course, a smartphone, the ordinary power bank options do not make the cut. The amount of power required to keep these gadgets juiced up is considerable, especially when on the go. The only solution is a custom-made power bank that suffices all the needs of your power-hungry gadgets.

A custom-built portable power station offers a high-capacity solution for people who need to run multiple devices without reliable access to wall power. Standard consumer power banks are often too limited for users carrying a laptop, phone, tablet, router, and other gear at the same time, especially in remote or mobile situations. To solve this problem, creator Luq1308 developed the Omnibus 4×8, a DIY backpack-friendly power bank with enormous capacity and flexible output options.

The heart of this project is a dense battery pack made from 32 brand-new 18650 lithium-ion cells arranged in a 4S8P configuration. Each cell is rated at 3000 mAh, and when assembled into the pack and scaled for usable voltage, the complete system delivers roughly 96,000 mAh, equivalent to about 345 watt-hours (Wh) of stored energy. This substantial capacity makes it suitable for powering a range of electronics for prolonged periods without recharging. Critical to the build is a battery management system (BMS) rated for 4S and 30 amps. The BMS monitors and balances the individual cells, prevents overcharging and deep discharge, and includes multiple safety fuses. The system also draws very little power at rest, with a standby current of less than 400 microamps, helping to preserve stored energy when the unit is not in active use.

The Omnibus 4×8 offers a wide range of outputs to suit both everyday gadgets and more demanding equipment. There are four USB-C ports, each capable of delivering up to 36 watts, which is enough to charge phones and tablets simultaneously. A 100 W bidirectional USB-C port supports fast laptop charging and can also accept power input from compatible charging sources. For broader custom needs, a DC jack provides adjustable outputs between 2.7 V and 20 V, and a high-wattage XT60 connector can handle loads exceeding 400 W. A dedicated 150 W AC outlet enables the use of small appliances through an inverter, expanding the range of devices that can be supported.

Inside the power station, an ESP32-C3 microcontroller oversees system operations. It reads real-time data such as voltage, current, and temperature from sensors and displays this information on a 1.3-inch OLED screen with simple navigation buttons. Four temperature sensors monitor the battery pack, heatsinks, and inverter, and dual 40 mm cooling fans are triggered as needed to manage heat during high loads. Custom aluminum heatsinks with thermal pads are included to further reduce thermal stress.

The enclosure combines hand-cut G10 fiberglass plates for strength with 3D-printed ABS plastic sides in a subdued matte black finish. Brass spacers and mesh vents enhance airflow and protect internal components while maintaining a rugged aesthetic suitable for outdoor use. Internally, thick-gauge silicone wiring and a perfboard distribution bus with fuses connect the various modules safely and efficiently.

One notable feature of this DIY build is its adaptability. The inverter was modified to work across the full battery voltage range, and the system can accept solar input with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for efficient off-grid recharging. All design files have been made open source on GitHub, allowing others to replicate or expand on the concept.

This Wooden Basket Becomes a Low Table When You Flip It Upside Down

There’s a familiar moment that happens when you carry food, cups, and random essentials to a park, balcony, or floor seating setup and then realize you still need a stable surface to put any of it on. Most people improvise with a bag or a corner of a blanket. Small-space living and casual gatherings reward objects that can do two jobs without taking up twice the storage, but most furniture is still designed around one fixed purpose.

This Convertible Basket Table concept works as both a carry basket and a low table in one form. By simply inverting it, the basket becomes a stable table surface suitable for picnics or casual indoor use. The design combines storage, portability, and easy transformation, making it ideal for relaxed gatherings and compact living spaces.

In basket mode, the structured wooden body has a built-in handle and a container that can hold the messy mix of picnic items, fruit, napkins, a book, or a small speaker. The form feels sturdy rather than floppy, carrying like a proper object with a clear handle instead of a tote that collapses when you set it down. That sturdiness is what makes the flip transformation credible. It’s definitely not a soft bag pretending to be furniture.

Once inverted and unfolded, it becomes a low table that works with floor cushions, outdoor blankets, or a casual living room setup. Low tables are the unsung heroes of flexible spaces. They work as coffee tables, game surfaces, or quick work perches, but they’re rarely portable. This one travels in your hand and arrives as a surface, which is a surprisingly underexplored idea.

A square knot side lock keeps the form secure when needed. It’s a rope-based closure that tightens the sides without complicated latches, click mechanisms, or hardware that will eventually strip or break. The whole thing is quiet, tool-free, and easy to replace if the rope wears out, which fits the picnic vibe better than snapping plastic clips would.

The build draws on traditional woodworking throughout. Pattern making involved pine wood in alternating grain directions and a chevron pattern using alternating teak and pine strips. Assembly relies on mortise and tenon joints and sliding mortise and tenon joints to hold the structure together without screws, so the connections are strong enough to handle the repeated flipping and carrying that the concept demands.

The design doesn’t ask you to change how you live, it just quietly accommodates the way you already move through the day. A basket when you’re going somewhere, a table when you arrive, and a warm wooden object that looks like someone actually made it rather than assembled it from a flat pack.
