The Sketch Toolbox, by Industrial Designer Thomas Bentzen

Despite its cutesy house shape, this Sketch Toolbox‘s form is highly functional. The sloped sides offer compartments of three different depths, and allow the user to easily see and access the contents.

Designed by Danish industrial designer Thomas Bentzen, it’s a single piece of ABS, 91% of which has been recycled from post-industrial waste.

“It is a monolithic piece – a technical feature that took years of development – meaning it is casted in one piece and in one material without using glue or screws,” Bentzen writes. “A process as simple as can be, yet immensely complex to produce. This makes it a truly solid piece made to last, just like we want a house to be.”

The Sketch Toolbox is in production by Scandinvian design brand Muuto and runs $65.

Motorsport Hilarity: The Rockford Speedway Figure 8 Trailer Race

At the risk of losing our European and Asian readers, I have to tell you about this.

Yes, we Americans do dumb things. But sometimes those dumb things are really freaking funny. A perfect case in point is the sadly now-defunct Rockford Speedway Figure 8 Trailer Race in Illinois.

For our urban readers worldwide, a little context is required. In rural America, where I live, it’s common to own a pickup truck and a trailer. Sometimes this is for recreation; the aspirations of rural prosperity include some type of pleasure craft, like a boat or a camper trailer, and you need a self-sufficient way to transport those things. Other times it’s for property maintenance; you might own a tractor, certainly a riding mower, and when required repairs exceed your abilities, you have to bring the machine to someone who can fix it.

The bottom line is, whatever you’re trailering is often valuable to you, precious even. And trailering requires extra care and safety precautions, because towing something 18 feet long that weighs thousands of pounds is inherently dangerous, and can induce some stress.

Which is what makes this race so goddamn funny, at least to me. Participants line up on the track in pickup trucks, SUVs or even sedans, with a trailer load. And rather than having a sensible oval track, the course is figure-8 shaped, which guarantees vehicular conflict.

There is no set amount of laps and no time limit. This is a last-man-standing affair. The last running vehicle that has its trailer still attached, wins the race.

What makes it so ridiculous, is that if you were trying to “win,” you’d logically attach the smallest, most nimble trailer you could find. Instead people are hooking up dual-axle 40-footers, boats, and one guy is even dragging a jet-ski behind a boat on a trailer.

The race was last held in 2023, and then Rockford Speedway was sold to real estate developers and shut down. I was going to write “This is why we can’t have nice things” but I guess it doesn’t quite apply here.

A Scale for Wild Birds

One of my dogs is a Great Pyrenees who weighs nearly 100 pounds. I know this because at the vet, you have to muscle her onto a scale that she really doesn’t want to get on. If I ran a veterinary practice, I’d design a portion of the floor so that a scale could be inserted into it, flush with the hardwood.

I’ve never thought about weighing other animals, until I saw this project. How do you weigh a bird? No wild bird likes being handled, and if you do manage to keep their wings shut and hold them onto a scale, the weight of your hands would throw the number off. This PerchCare concept, by South Korean industrial designers Hanung Lee, Hyeokwoo Kwon, Minji Kim, Yoonji Choi, aims to make the task easier.

“PerchCare is a smart perch developed to support the rehabilitation of rescued wild birds. At first glance, it looks like an ordinary object. But inside, it holds a weight measurement system designed to monitor a bird’s health without disturbing it.”

Dutch Engineers Move Massive Historic Swedish Church Three Miles Away

The mining town of Kiruna is Sweden’s northernmost city, located within the Arctic Circle. It was founded in the 1890s and Kiruna Church, one of the country’s largest wooden structures, was erected in the 1910s.

As the underground mining operations have expanded over the years, the ground has become unstable, and the church needed to be moved. This task fell to Dutch engineering firm Mammoet, which specializes in heavy transport solutions.

The planning took over 1,000 hours, but the actual 5km (3.1 mile) move was executed in just two days. The 786-ton structure was jacked up as massive steel beams were placed beneath the structure; these were then rested on two of the company’s Self-Propelled Modular Transporters, which were each configured with 28 axles.

Two engineers sat inside the church, to listen for cracks, as it rolled towards its new site.

Two days after they’d set off, the church was successfully lowered onto its new concrete foundation, now a safe distance away from the mining tunnels.

Next Mammoet has to move the church’s belfry, a separate structure. But that should be a cinch; it only weighs 99 tons.

Pizza Cutters, from Underdesigned to Overdesigned

Over the past few decades, the growing world economy has led to a startling range of options for even humdrum kitchen tools. Let’s talk pizza cutters. Starting at the bottom, you can pick up a plastic-handled model at Walmart for $2.37.

I’m sure it works well enough, at least for the first few weeks, but you probably won’t be handing this down to your grandchildren.

If you step up to $12, you can get an OXO model with their Good Grips feature.

If you want something plastic-free, OXO offers a Steel Pizza Wheel for $18. Now we’re looking at something you’ll keep forever.

Moving into more designey territory, Caraway’s stainless steel pizza cutter features some pleasing radii at the hilt. It runs $55.

Then we get to the money-is-no-object offering. Dalstrong, a Canadian manufacturer of designey kitchen goods, offers a $130 pizza cutter. It looks like what they use to cut the pizza in Valhalla.

Like the Caraway model, the handle and hilt are a single piece of stainless steel, but here the sculpted hilt is like something you’d see on a sword. The scalloped handle is clad in two pieces of olive wood, and the wheel is made from the type of German steel you see in high-end kitchen knives.

The manufacturer says the three-spoke design allows you to generate more downforce, but it’s not clear to me how that works.

There is one functional feature the others lack: Here the wheel is removable, in order that you can easily clean or re-sharpen it.

Priciness aside, Dalstrong does offer protection against buyer’s remorse: They offer a 70-day 100% money-back guarantee.

An Innovative Rail-Based Wall-Mounted Planter System

The Rail is by Cleveland-based product designer Brian Hendricks, a/k/a Lofted Goods. It’s a rail-based, wall-mounted planter system consisting of a wood dowel and 3D-printed components.

The vessels are easily removable, and slot into the brackets via a sliding dovetail.

The bottom of each vessel is unscrewable, allowing you to drain water as necessary.

What I really appreciate is that Hendricks put careful thought into how the system could be easily installed and assembled:

Industrial Design Case Study: An Automated Robot Parking System

San-Francisco-based Volley Automation creates automated robotic parking systems. To refine their robot parking valet, which increases the amount of parking space available within apartment buildings, they turned to industrial design consultancy Mighty Studios.

OVERVIEW
A robot capable of lifting a Rivian and parking it door-dingingly close to another vehicle in a garage without damage or human involvement is one thing. It’s another thing entirely to have that robot look the part, with an aesthetic that says it all: The future of parking has arrived. When Volley Automation first approached Mighty Studios, the initial ask was to take their invention—an industrious robot that was the workhorse within their smarter parking system—and ‘skin it,’ giving it an exterior that matched its interior technological capabilities and smarts.

INSIGHT
It’s a fact: High-density condominiums and apartments in cities like San Francisco need parking for their residents. When these buildings are first designed, city codes dictate how many spaces are needed, and space is limited. By creating what is essentially a ‘robot car valet’ Volley Automation eliminated both architectural and human challenges within traditional parking garage design.

A robot parking valet provides many advantages. Once a driver arrives in the Volley Automation bay and calls up the robot via an app, the robot—essentially a tray on wheels that can move in any direction—lifts the vehicle and with no need to account for doors opening or turning circles, can park it incredibly close to another vehicle, reducing the space needed for each car. With the system in place, a building that once needed four floors of parking with ramps and drive aisles could now require only two, cutting construction costs and reducing the overall parking footprint, all while adhering to code.
Much like a real-world valet, you are placing your trust in the robot’s skill. Volley wanted the aesthetic of the robot to match the ability and confidence of the system itself. The challenge for Mighty Studios was to not just make it look good while creating that sense of trust, but to create a skin that could accommodate the complex systems and high-tech internal mechanisms and robotics within.

The process began with Mighty’s industrial design team working with Volley’s engineers to get the full scope of what was required, including mechanical design constraints, cosmetic considerations, and client objectives. In the end, Mighty delivered a ‘skin’ that addressed efficiencies in production, material selection, and all while providing a design that allowed for maintenance access to internal robotic systems, hardware, and software.

Beyond the initial ask, Mighty’s industrial design expertise was further leveraged to explore additional concepts for Volley’s smart garage project. The task? Consider how an EV charging system might work into the parking experience. Could, for example, a resident use the app to park the car and have the EV charged during? The team at Mighty explored multiple industrial design concepts for an elegant robotic charge handle, taking into consideration different vehicle requirements and connection challenges, bringing some much-appreciated industrial design brainpower to the conceptual table.

At the end of the client engagement, the result was more than just a robot valet with a face. The Volley Automation project allowed Mighty to show the true scope of what client collaboration can look like. From a simple industrial engineering ‘create an aesthetic’ for a robot request, grew a mechanical engineering component, plus additional work with the client in concepting visions for future enhancements to the system.

A Tippable Teacup with a Built-in Strainer

That said, this doesn’t look like a great fit for the clumsy or those with cluttered desks. While I’m drawn to this thing, I know for sure I’d eventually knock it over, drop it, spill liquid and/or burn myself. Here’s to hoping they design a 2.0 with some klutz safeguards built in.

The Tactile Media Alliance: Rescuing Touch in a World of Screens

When Lindsay Yazzolino was young, she made an origami Christmas tree out of a one-dollar bill. Impressed with how sharp she’d made the topmost point, she urged her mother to examine it for herself. Although her mother assured her that she could see the paper, Yazzolino insisted. Upon touching the point, her mother yelped in pain.

“And I said: ‘See, I told you!” Yazzolino recalls. “It’s just a different experience.”

Blind since birth, Yazzolino didn’t expect to make her professional career in tactile graphics. But since graduating from Brown University in 2011 with a degree in cognitive science, and after many subsequent years spent in neuroscience labs, Yazzolino has been leveraging her invaluable expertise to design “hand-catching” experiences that put one of humanity’s least-acknowledged senses front and center.

“I remember when I was first studying cognitive science, and the textbooks go: ‘vision, vision, vision, vision, vision, vision, vision…aaaaand touch-smell-taste,” Yazzolino recalls. 

This inequity exists despite how vision exists in a localized structure (the retina) and detects a single kind of sensory info (electromagnetic waves)—whereas touch operates as a diffused sensory network across all of the body’s skin and internal organs detecting pressure, temperature, vibration, texture, and more. “Not to say that vision isn’t important!” Yazzolino clarifies. “But there’s obviously so much missing. People just haven’t been studying it.”

Yazzolino is just one of the designers who has as of late joined the ranks of the Tactile Media Alliance. Co-founded in 2019 by industrial design professor Abigail Stangl—who recently came onboard at Georgia Tech—the Alliance hopes to function as both a kind of trade organization, and as a rallying point for touch-minded designers. Georgia Tech, as it turns out, happens to serve as a natural landing place for the Alliance; in addition to the university’s long-running braille manufacturing facility (which produced over two million embossed pages in 2024 alone), their Center for Inclusive Design and Innovation also serves as home for the Accessible User Experience (UX) Research Lab and the Assistive Technology Network.

“Accessibility has a long history rooted in ingenuity—people finding creative, often scrappy ways to make the world work for them, using what’s on hand,” Stangl says. But all the while, “accessibility has been treated as an afterthought, left to individuals to ‘MacGyver‘ solutions. But we’re seeing a shift: there’s growing recognition that accessibility deserves real investment, not just accommodation. When we prioritize inclusive design from the start, we don’t just make things better for disabled people—we make products, services, and spaces better for everyone.”

TMA’s mission has become especially potent during the past few decades, wherein the “touch screen” has essentially become the de facto user interface, from smartphones to electric cars dashboards to ostensibly “smart” kitchen appliances. But this space-age approach has substantial downsides, especially for those who rely on touch to navigate their world; when moving into a new home, for example, Yazzolino’s blind friends must often seek out modern appliances whose design haven’t yet become totally inaccessible.

“It’s so funny,” Yazzolino says. “They’re called touch screens, right? And yet, they’re not tactile.”

Although braille still remains one of the most iconic examples, tactile media has made more than a few advances since the script’s invention just over two hundred years ago. Raised line drawings, for example, allow for the creation of drawn outlines using carbon-infused ink—typically on specialized microcapsule paper, such as Swell—that raise with the application of heat. The advent of 3D printing, of course, has allowed for the relatively easy production of all sorts of 3D creations (albeit, at a consumer level, out of specialized plastic like PLA). And more recently, enthusiasm has been building for a variety of “Holy Braile” devices, which contain refreshable displays that can provide dynamic and on-demand braille and tactile graphics.

Despite an increasing public interest in “multi-sensory experiences,” however, creating high-quality tactile media requires a more nuanced approach than providing a printed or outlined object to be touched. Yazzolino often encounters this first-hand, like when a museum asked her and her team at Touch Graphics – a tactile design company with which Yazzolino has been working for the past decade – to create a touchable replica of a precious Buddhist statue. The statue on its own, however—missing limbs, and covered in faded inscriptions—would not have served as an enjoyable tactile experience. In response, Yazzolino helped create tactile tablets that included the raised inscriptions that would trigger audio of the curator explaining it.

“Visually, you can see everything at once, in the gestalt,” Stangl explains. “But tactilely, it’s about spatial layout, a progression of learning, building knowledge through hands-on engagement.” Compared to the visual experience of taking in a whole scene and then honing in on details, tactile media often operates in the opposite direction. These “tactile skills” are vital, but must be honed with practice (not all blind people read braille, and many become blind or low-vision later in life).

A modern-day paucity of tactile experience may have arisen from more than a modern industrial aesthetic. “Touch can be stigmatized, so much, because of the sense of intimacy: the degradation, the patina,” Stangl says. The recent COVID-19 pandemic—on top of a broader social trend towards individualism and isolation—have likely done little to thwart this inclination. The Tactile Media Alliance hoped to start redressing that imbalance with a three-day “Workshop on Design for Tactile and Embodied Learning” this past February—an exhibit kicked off with a presentation by Stangl’s mentor, Ann Cunningham, a Colorado-based artist who Stangl describes as “one of the premier educators who has been advocating for blind-led design education.”

“Tactile is just so interdisciplinary,” Stangl stresses. “Is it a material question? A media question? An architectural question? A disability studies question? An HCI [Human-Computer Interaction] question? And I think design is really uniquely positioned to bring all of these different perspectives into one place.”

As the field evolves, meanwhile, Yazzolino expresses a keen desire that the work of tactile designers be granted the same respect as visual ones. Just how someone isn’t presumed to have capacity for visual art by virtue of possessing mere capacity for sight, sighted designers should take care not to presume they have a natural knack for tactile design. By contrast, designers and others in the blind/low-vision community can draw from a wealth of experience and an abundance of personal insight.

“Touch isn’t relegated to just accessibility,” Yazzolino says. “It’s a part of our experience that we could do a much better job at paying attention to. Take the dialogue away from just benefiting people with disabilities, and use our experiences as blind people—who have expertise with tactile products and design—to weigh in, and be part of this conversation.”

During one of Stangl’s workshops at Georgia Tech, industrial design students partnered with blind co-designers to develop individual projects. Yazzolino, in collaboration with student Victoria Gamez, designed a tactile learning kit that embodied one of Yazzolino’s lifelong passions: bats. Using thin layers of silicone for the wing membranes, skewers for the bone, and sculpted yellow foam wrapped in fur lining for the body, Gamez and Yazzolino’s kit allowed users to get close and personal with a friendly facsimile of these echolocating sky puppies. The kit also comes with a raised diagram of the bat’s anatomy (with key features labeled in braille), and the whole kit comes packaged in a manner that capitalizes on the tactile experience of unboxing (including a Velcro flap, in the shape of a bat).

“I think it’s a more universal and interesting conversation,” Yazzolino says. “To think of all these experiences that we want in the world, and to explore those in a tactile way.”

Hoto’s Designey Pocket-Sized Bike Tire Pump

This Air Pump Pocket, by Chinese tool manufacturer Hoto, fits well within the brand’s designey aesthetic.
