Most table lamps are designed to give you light. The Rift Series, a small-batch collection by New York-based architect Yongwon Kwon, is designed to make you think about where the light goes and where it doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n
The concept is deceptively simple. Each lamp in the collection starts as a recognizable geometric form: a cylinder, a rectangle, a triangle, or a split volume. Then a narrow opening, a \u201crift,\u201d is cut through the outer shell. That single gesture changes everything. Light escapes through the gap in a thin, directed line while the rest of the body glows softly from within. The contrast is quiet but deliberate, and it\u2019s the kind of design decision that reveals more the longer you sit with it.<\/p>\n

The horizontal layers left by the 3D printing process are kept visible rather than sanded away, which I think is one of the more interesting calls in the project. The texture catches light in a way a smooth surface never could, and it gives each piece a kind of materiality that reads as both modern and handmade at the same time. It\u2019s the kind of detail that rewards you for looking closely.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n That tension between high-tech process and tactile warmth is where the Rift Series earns real staying power as a design object. A lot of 3D-printed homeware ends up looking exactly like what it is: a prototype that forgot to become a product. These lamps don\u2019t have that problem. They look considered and finished, like someone spent a long time deciding what to keep and what to lose.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n The light behavior itself is worth dwelling on. When the lamps are switched off, they read as clean sculptural objects. Geometric, calm, a little minimal. Turn them on and the whole personality shifts. The diffused glow through the body creates atmosphere, while the rift throws a sharper beam that draws your eye to its source. It\u2019s a dual character that most lamps never bother to develop, and it makes the Rift Series feel like it belongs in a room the way a piece of furniture does, not just as something you plug in when it gets dark.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n For anyone drawn to design that carries a clear point of view, this collection is hard to ignore. It\u2019s not trying to be everything to everyone. It commits to a single idea: that a controlled absence of light can be just as expressive as the light itself. Limited runs mean better material accountability and a closer relationship between maker and object.
