Just yesterday, I overheard my daughter comforting her friend by gently rubbing her head and saying, \u201cSana Sana, culito de rana<\/em>.\u201d My daughter was serious. Her friend was confused.<\/p>\n

You see, Dahlia had told Cristina, my daughter, that she had a headache. Naturally, Cristina wanted to help her feel better. So, like any self-respecting Latina, she performed the time-honored \u201cSana Sana<\/em>\u201d ritual.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s when the cultural clash we often see here in the United States made an appearance, right in the middle of an afterschool activity. A well-meaning gesture caused confusion. And the healing powers of a frog\u2019s butt took center stage. <\/p>\n

It all made me wonder: How did a tiny amphibian body part become the best medical advice my child could give? <\/em>Like most Latino sayings, there had to be a good reason behind it \u2026 or was this just one giant leap (pun intended) of faith?<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Origins of \u2018Sana Sana\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Most of us raised in a Latino household know this rhyme \u2013 mostly by mothers, grandmothers, or any person authorized to kiss booboos \u2013, works every time. It\u2019s like Neosporin for the soul.<\/p>\n

\u201cSana, Sana, Colita de Rana<\/em> (heal, heal, little frog\u2019s tail) is an endearing phrase based on a common children\u2019s rhyme in Spanish about a little frog\u2019s tail healing to offer comfort and build resilience,\u201d an article on the topic, by\u00a0 the County of San Mateo, explains.<\/a> \u201cThis expression is commonly used in many Latino\/a\/x communities to offer consolation when one, specifically a child, has fallen or gotten hurt. The phrase continues with \u2018if you don\u2019t heal today, you will heal tomorrow.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

But where did it come from? A couple of unexpected origin theories hop into the story.<\/p>\n

A Romanian blogger claims, \u201c\u2019Sana Sana, Colita de Rana<\/em>\u2018 actually comes from a medieval Romanian phrase: \u2018Vindeca ca o broasca, si azi si maine<\/a>!’\u201d <\/em>\u00a0(\u201cHeal like a frog, both today and tomorrow.\u201d)<\/p>\n

He says it was brought to Spain by Romani (Gitano) communities through flamenco music, then passed on to Latin America during colonization. In Romanian folklore, frogs were seen as healing creatures, especially for their magical ability to regrow limbs, often used (allegedly) in witchcraft.<\/p>\n

This takes us to Spanish-language TikToker, @diccionariovenezolano, who offers his own theory: it\u2019s rooted in Northern Irish witchcraft, suggesting that the rhyme\u2019s healing power has mystical origins far older than Latin America.<\/p>\n

Is it Sana Sana Colita, Culito, or Curita?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Everyone can agree that, at its core, no matter what country it came from, \u201cSana Sana<\/em>\u201d has a great message: things will get better tomorrow. Some go so far as to say that, as a healing ritual, this rhyme actually works. As Dr. Gustavo Ferrer<\/a>, author of \u201cCough Cures: The Best Natural Remedies and Over-the-Counter Drugs for Acute and Chronic Cough<\/a>,\u201d tells me, most healing rituals by Abuelas bring comfort no matter what. They \u201coffer a moment of mindfulness, a spiritual reset.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, because Latin America is a vast, diverse place full of linguistic creativity, \u201cSana Sana<\/em>\u201d comes in many forms. The magical spell has a few colorful variations, so let\u2019s explore them. Here\u2019s what real Reddit users, and others, had to say about the variations they grew up with.<\/p>\n

Mexico: Tail or \u2026 Not-Tail<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u201cI know people sing it differently,\u201d one Reddit user explains. \u201cSome people say, \u2018culito de rana<\/em>,\u2019 which is frog\u2019s a*s. My mom always sang \u2018colita de rana<\/em>,\u2019 which is frog\u2019s tail. She said it was because the pain, much like a tadpole\u2019s tail when it turns into a frog, will go away and you won\u2019t even notice,\u201d a Reddit user explains.<\/p>\n

So, depending on where you stand in Mexico (or maybe which tia is doing the healing), your frog anatomy lesson might get a little \u2026 anatomical.<\/p>\n

Cuba: Let\u2019s Just Say It<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u201cMy Cuban family always said culito<\/em>,\u201d a Cuban American Reddit user writes.<\/p>\n

Culito. Straight-up. No frogs pretending to be modest. This version is less about healing and more about making you giggle so hard you forget you just face-planted off a tricycle.<\/p>\n

Chile: The Butt is Small, But Still a Butt<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u201cIn Chile, we say \u2018Potito de rana<\/em>,\u2019\u201d my Chilean American friend tells me.<\/p>\n

Potito<\/em> is a cutesy way of saying \u201clittle butt.\u201d This is how Chileans gently ease you into the realization that life hurts, but it\u2019s adorable about it.<\/p>\n

A curita<\/em> is a Band-Aid. So this version skips the frog entirely and goes straight to first aid. Practical and sanitary, like Puerto Rican moms tend to be.<\/p>\n

Latin American Moms in General: Rated G<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u201cMy mom always said curita<\/em>,\u201d a Reddit user writes. \u201cI wonder if that was a family way of making it G rated.\u201d<\/p>\n

This G-rated version replaces frog butts with healing bandages, for moms who don\u2019t want their kids repeating questionable anatomy terms at school during Show & Tell. Other online comments related to this version.<\/p>\n

So what have we learned here? That frogs are apparently powerful healers? That moms everywhere are creative ancient healers? That \u201cSana Sana<\/em>\u201d may be rooted in witchcraft and\/or frog abuse?<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t matter. What matters is that, if it doesn\u2019t work out today, well, then there\u2019s always ma\u00f1ana<\/em>.<\/p>\n
